JamieW (149/150), Greg (144/145), Jirin (120/128)

Comments:
"A fairly straightforward Heads album, but I prefer them slightly when there’s a little quirk to their stuff. That being said, this is still a solid Heads album, bookended by the two best tracks and plenty of treats in between. It’s also their warmest sounding album. No. 67" RockyRaccoon

"Every song here is grade A dance-pop. The perfect vehicle for Madonna to claim her throne as the most important female artist of all time. Dance and sing, get up and do your thing!" Moonbeam

And now our first album without any official "haters":

105. Aztec Camera – High Land, Hard Rain (1983)

[imgsize 250x250]http://rymimg.com/lk/s/l/3145e498fea248 ... 278270.jpg[/imgsize]

Score:
1172.86

Biggest fans:
Honorio (7/150)

Comments:
"That album meant a lot for me at the time. Amidst the synthesizer era, a young Scot brought the acoustic guitar back to pop music. He showed the passion and freshness expected from a 19-year old boy but the craft and ability than one could expect from an experienced songwriter. 'Oblivious' or 'Walk Out to Winter' were perfect pop mini-symphonies." Honorio

“While I would have been happy to see 'Kill 'Em All' here win the tie-breaker, this is a very beautiful album full of straightforward pop prowess” Nassim

"This is the first album without any haters. And the guitars on this album...brilliant." Listyguy

"An album full of simple pop pleasures, but sometimes those are the best. This album finds a groove early, mainly through the excellent chiming guitar work, and rarely lets up. Roddy Frame is a smart songwriter and lyricist, too. No. 51" RockyRaccoon

"The first song has a cool jazz vibe I can get into. The second song has the creepy Twin Peaks thing going for it. After that, the album rarely gets off the ground (no pun intended). There is only so much ethereal whispering and quiet backing music a man can listen to. No. 130" RockyRaccoon

"Probably my favorite discovery of the albums poll. It has definite influences but carves out its own eerily wonderful niche in the 80s music scene." Monbeam

"I’m pretty neutral on this album. I can see why some people might love it, and I can see why some people might hate it. Fraser’s voice is mostly intoxicating, occasionally annoying, but the music is always layered and innovative (for its time). The two go together well. No. 97" RockyRaccoon

Some good albums in that last 10.
Madonna's debut is one of my favorite debuts ever and ranks in my top 20 all time. The birth of dance-pop!

Bad is by far my favorite MJ album, and I'm happy it made the poll as it is generally not highly regarded as far as I know.

Some Great Reward gets the nod over Music for the Masses, but I think I prefer Speak and Spell and Black Celebration over both!

I liked both Philip Glass albums and slightly preferred Koyaanisqatsi for the B-grade early 80s horror synths.

My personal list seems to be quite different to the collective one. Giving every remaining album the median position of 50.5, my correlation with the overall list currently stands at a paltry 0.056.

Cool to see the New Order albums back to back, but I would have flipped the order. Brothers in Arms wasn't horrible like I feared, but it wasn't really anything special, either. As for Joe Jackson, I much preferred Night and Day (thanks, nicolas!) although Body & Soul isn't bad. It's the second album that finished exactly where I placed it in the list (Lolita Nation is the other one).

"A punk album from the SoCal point of view, and the energy is palpable. Exene Cervenka and John Doe’s harmonies are perfectly off kilter, adding to the fun impact of lines such as 'Your Phone’s off the hook, but you’re not.' I actually like Wild Gift just a little better because it digs a little deeper, but this is a great start. No. 46" RockyRaccoon

If he’d taken a little more time, trimmed a few songs, it could have been as great as some people already think it is. But Costello really was on a roll of great albums, and I actually think this is one of the weakest of those. But, hey, being the worst player on the Dream Team is still pretty good. No. 69." "They harden and tighten up their sound here, in relative terms, anyway. I’m not quite such a fan of this as the loud and loose 'Let It Be,' or the pop smarts of 'Pleased to Meet Me,' but there’s no denying Paul Westerberg was on a roll. 'Bastards of the Young' kicks ass. No. 48" RockyRaccoon

I kept quiet up until now because my favorite albums were on quite a roll and I didn't want to jinx them. (I believe that, until today, the highest ranked album I'd lost was "True Blue" at #25.) Now that I've lost 2 of my top 5 back-to-back (both New Order albums!), I can safely say thanks for the great presentation, Listyguy!

Of the albums that were near the bottom of my list, the one that surprised me the most was Mary Margaret O'Hara. It was one of about 20 albums I hadn't heard before; and, since I've discovered a lot of favorites from those who ranked it highly in the yearly poll, I was really looking forward to it. I actually listened to it a few times to see if it would grow on me and was rather perplexed when it didn't, since I recognize it as good music. Conversely, there were two albums I'd never heard before that actually made my top 40, and I'm happy to see that both of those are still coming.

Are you keeping the names of these albums to yourself until after they surface?

Yeah, I'll point them both out as they come up in the countdown. (Apparently, the superstitious nature that I've always tried to deny is really surfacing here.)

Of the albums in Nassim's AM list that didn't make the finals, the one I have a particular fondness for is The Feelies. The term "jangle-pop" is used a lot, and for me personally, "Crazy Rhythms" is the epitome of the genre. That album just makes me feel alive whenever I hear it!

Like the Human League from the same year, Soft Cell has already developed their own signature sound, whereas many upcoming dabblers would only use synth-pop for window dressing. Though not without its humanity, the entire album has a scuzzy feel (take “Sleazy City,” or there's the tragic “Youth,” which is like being covered in a film you’ll never be able to get off)." Ironically, since RockyRaccoon was one of the ones curious about the two albums I'd never heard that made my Top 40, one of those albums was "The Colour of Spring" (#35), which he definitely didn't share my enthusiasm for. Hopefully, we'll be in agreement on the second one, since it ranked considerably higher for me, and was my favorite find of the 80s poll! (I'll also never know why it took so long for me to listen to "Spring," since I always liked the other Talk Talk albums I'd heard.)

80. Brian Eno & David Byrne – My Life In the Bush of Ghosts (1981)

Not a fan:
RockyRaccoon (140/150), Greg (140/145), LiveinPhoenix (111/120)

Comments:
" A record that stands almost out of time, sounding like nothing before or after. Byrne and Eno aren't always fully successful, but they're certainly original, and when the album works (like the creepy "Jezebel"), it's amazing" Kingoftonga

“Eno & Byrne previewed the sound of the future with samples and world music, getting ahead of their contemporaries for more than a decade.” Honorio

"I think this is going to take a few listens to sink in, but it has certainly made quite the first impression! I'm certainly coming around to the idea that Brian Eno is one of the greatest musical wizards ever." Moonbeam

"I like Talking Heads, just not solo Byrne. I like some Brian Eno, just not this one. It sounds like experimental studio noodling. I’m not opposed to experimenting in the studio, just the noodling. A lot of it sounds like they threw shit against a wall to see what would stick. Unfortunately, most of it slid down and pooled on the floor. 140" RockyRaccoon

Biggest fans:
Moonbeam (4/150)

Not a fan:
DaveC (136/150), Greg (134/145)

Comments:
"The very apex of synth pop. Annie takes turns as the ice queen, scorned lover, unhinged maniac and soulful outcast atop the most mammoth synths ever. The title track defines the sound of an era, 'Love Is a Stranger' and 'I Could Give You (A Mirror)' provide razor-sharp dancefloor menace, 'Jennifer' bleeds neon emotion from its pores, 'The Walk' propogates an air of eerie mystery, and 'This City Never Sleeps' makes the hollow and listless monotony of impoverished apartment living sound so captivating - DnA proved themselves masters of all facets of the genre." Moonbeam

"Eurythmics – Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This): Annie Lennox certainly has golden pipes, and Dave Stewart doesn’t seem to have a lack of synthy hooks, well, at least until the end. As much as I enjoy the first two thirds of the album, the last few songs kinda drag. No. 104" RockyRaccoon

"It’s a great breakup album, even if it’s not intended to be. There’s a powerful tension on these songs as they go back and forth between Richard’s and Linda’s ruminations on the effects of love going wrong. Some great guitar work, too. No. 17" RockyRaccoon

"If this album were the divorce case, with the songs being each persons case, Richard would win handily. 'Don't Renege On Our Love' and the title track are outstanding. But Linda would put up a good fight: 'Did She Jump or Was She Pushed?' is a chilling masterpiece." Listyguy

"Sophisti-pop at its best. And that's not only because of the polished arrangements courtesy of Thomas Dolby but mainly for the superb song-writing of Paddy McAloon. Opaque but sensitive lyrics and complex but brilliant melodies filled an album that never fails to fascinate me every time I listen to it no matter the many years passed since I discovered it." Honorio

"It gets off to a great start with 'Faron Young,' but after that it comes down a little. It’s a nice pop record, good for the most part, I’m just not entirely sure what all the fuss is about. And sometimes it can be just a little too thin, 'Goodbye Lucille #1.' No. 93" RockyRaccoon

"1989 saw the resurrection of many classic rock stars. Dylan, Young or Orbison released their best albums in many years. But the best one was Reed's, no doubt." Honorio

"Reed singing about a subject, his home town, that he’s well acquainted with. It shows in the lyrics and the music, possibly his best post-Velvets tunes. I give the Blue Mask an edge in his ’80s repertoire, just because of the intimate, personal feel, but New York is definitely the best album he made named after a city. The other one kinda sucks. Comments:
"Colossal Youth’s sound suggests the icy perfection of modern life (17 years before OK Computer, and without any of the bleating). It seems appropriate that the group released a set of instrumentals—it was like you were no longer needed to even populate your own song. Despite the catacomb stillness of the music, YMG still makes sure that their tunes are in good shape, as Courtney Love of all people went after “Credit in the Straight World” and turned it into a raging rocker." LiveinPhoenix

"I like the quirky uniqueness, the minimalist post-punk sound and even the singer’s delicate vocals. I wish at times it wasn’t so damn slight, but I’m willing to forgive it for the aforementioned reasons. The Friedbergers were obviously listening, as was Courtney Love. No. 100" RockyRaccoon

And there's the second new discovery that made my Top 40. I was completely blown away by The Chameleons (#18), and it has continued to grow on me. I expect it to be even higher on my list the next time the 80's poll rolls around.

70. Hüsker Dü – Zen Arcade (1984)

[imgsize 250x250]http://rymimg.com/lk/s/l/6dfa05a6f36589 ... 172378.jpg[/imgsize]

Score:
1293.97

Biggest fans:
Mattcienicram (8/73), RockyRaccoon (11/150), Sonofsamiam (14/150)

Not a fan:
Kingoftonga (150/150), Henrik (147/148), Stephan (138/139), Dan (140/150)

Comments:
"Just a relentless power shadowing this concept punk album." Mattcienicram

“It was the grunge era when I first heard this CD, having heard some punk music, not to mention Husker Du’s final album -- and no, none of that was preparation for such a hardcore album made by a crazed group of individuals.” LiveinPhoenix

"I had no idea what to expect, and I came away quite impressed! For a 'punk' band, they've got a great sense of melody. 'Pink Turns to Blue' especially is a great find!" Moonbeam

"A punk concept album that stretches over double-album length. What a concept. Actually, it’s a recipe for disaster, but there are several factors that bring it all together brilliantly. The amazing wash of sound, the razor-sharp, buzz-saw guitars, the experimentation and ambition, and two great songwriters – Mould and Hart – at the height of their powers. No. 11" RockyRaccoon

"I really just don't get this genre at all" Henrik

Miguel (15/102)

"With synths and funk for days, it is no surprise that this is my favorite Talking Heads album. Tracks like 'Girlfriend Is Better', 'Pull Up the Roots' and 'Making Flippy Floppy' should be diagnosed for anyone hoping to overcome an affliction of two left feet, and 'This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)' is one of the tenderest love songs ever made." Moonbeam

"This is the heads at their goofy best. Just one great song after another, it almost sounds like a best of. It confuses me why this is the most under-acclaimed album in their entire catalog. No. 28" RockyRaccoon

"The only album that really justifies the sophisti-pop label in my view. These songs shine like hidden sacred jewels as if discovered in an epic quest." Moonbeam

"This would usually be the type of soft pop music I’d not have a lot of interest in. But when the songs are written and performed with such craftsmanship, who am I to put up resistance? What also separates this album from the wimpy pop of the era is that these songs have just enough bite, and there’s that whole cool Viking thing going on with the cover. No. 55" RockyRaccoon

I ranked Cyndi Lauper low, but to be fair, I think Time After Time is an incredible song. Just not enough to save the album with Girls Want To Have Fun on it.

We'll conclude today's portion of the list with a pair of individual number ones:

65. Minutemen – Double Nickels on the Dime (1984)

[imgsize 250x250]http://rymimg.com/lk/s/l/35b6e2e83c0d84 ... 500933.jpg[/imgsize]

Score:
1305.23

Biggest fans:

Not a fan:
Honorio (142/150), Stephan (134/139)

Comments:
"Some unnecessary moments of seemingly random noise should not prevent you for enjoying the numerous moments of songwriting and bass playing prowesses (Corona, Vietnam, History Lesson pt II...)" Nassim

"How do you describe this album? 44 fun songs that fly by in a blur. Punk’s the starting spot, but they branch out it all sorts of wild and weird directions. Some of the song titles are entertaining enough on their own. 'Political Song for Michael Jackson to Sing,' 'Do You Want New Wave or Do You Want the Truth?' and 'The Roar of the Masses Could be Farts' for example. No. 40" RockyRaccoon

Place in 1984 poll: Tied for 7

Place in the 2008 poll: 51 (-14)

Acclaimed Music 1980s rank: 40

Acclaimed Music all-time rank: 273

Moonbeam (12/150)

Not a fan:
Craig (141/150), Maximumbeef (81/88)

Comments:
"Probably the post-punk album that shows the most heart, it's a shame that The Sound never found a mainstream footing. This is one of the most impressive debut albums I've ever encountered - each song boils with a visceral pull and stands as a benchmark of instrumentation, production and songwriting." Moonbeam

"Cool post-punk sounds. A really good album that only dips slightly in quality during the second half. It’s not Entertainment! or Closer, but not many are. No. 68" RockyRaccoon

Place in 1980 poll: 9

Place in the 2008 poll: Not Ranked

Comments:
" Sounds dated, but in a good way. The songs are catchy as hell, and the synths are that perfect mix that makes you nostalgic for 1981." Kingoftonga

"'Travelogue' is more interesting, but 'Dare!' is a consistently fantastic and commerically palatable introduction to their sound. It's no wonder it is such a landmark for synth pop." Moonbeam

"Another case of one great song and the rest is not up to par. In this instance, the rest ranges from okay to kinda boring. 124" RockyRaccoon

Not a fan:
Henry (148/150)

Comments:
" Definitely a lot of gems buried here, but this feels like Waits trying too hard." Kingoftonga

"A middling collection of Waits songs, with too much of it out of context. And it’s not good enough for me to want to hear it all in context. There are a few gems littered throughout, like 'Cold Cold Ground,' but for the most part it’s simply okay. No. 126" RockyRaccoon

Place in 1987 poll: 4

Place in the 2008 poll: Not Ranked

Comments:
"The perfect Irish-rock record. They manage to blend traditional music with their own boozy, barroom version of rock and roll. Shane MacGowan is the perfect frontman for this group as they sway back and forth between the rough rock of 'The Sick Bed of Cuchulain' to the moving ballad 'A Pair of Brown Eyes.' No. 35" RockyRaccoon

I'm 99% sure it's the Waits album with the Smiths comments. I can't change it now. Also, Bad was given an accidental #1 by Henry, so I'll also be fixing that tomorrow.

Listyguy, your great show continues, but I think you need to check this entry closer. My guess is that not only Moonbeam's comment but also his 15th place was for Strangeways.

I definitely didn't vote Frank's Wild Years as 15. That would be Strangeways! Frank's Wild Years ended up as my number 103.

Glad to see Sweet Dreams in the top 100, although I wish more people recognized it as the apex of synth pop like I do! Touch is also amazing, indeed!

Very, very disturbing that Back in Black is still festering around in the top 60.

To continue my disagreements with Mr. Raccoon, I think New York is massively overrated. "Strawman" is the only great song, and the rest just kind of hangs there for the most part. I say this as a big fan of Lou, but one who ranks Berlin as easily his best. ;)

I'm also curious about the placement of the non-Anglophone albums. Juju Music was the big winner for me. I don't really see what's so great about the Orchestra Baobab and Astor Piazzolla albums.

Ok, everything has been fixed. #62 is in fact "Frank's Wild Years", and the comments and fans now represent that album. Additionally, with the change in Henry's list, "Bad" falls down to #129, and every album in between there and #102 move up a rank.

Thanks Listyguy! Fetching presentation. So far my own list doesn’t look much like the consensus list, but hey, that’s part of the fun of it (even if the people around you tell you to stop scratching your head when you look at your computer).
Moonbeam wrote: I'm also curious about the placement of the non-Anglophone albums. Juju Music was the big winner for me. I don't really see what's so great about the Orchestra Baobab and Astor Piazzolla albums.
I can see why you prefer King Sunny Adé’s Juju Music to the other two. It’s more groovy, it uses synthesizers, and the music is generally more varied and left-field. But I can’t help but feel that if you use a band of 21 members to fuse a variety of genres like juju, afro-pop, reggae and dub, then you should really go for it. I agree with your earlier comment that the interplay between the various instruments and sounds are very intricate, but I think it could do with more bounce and energy instead of meandering off into the Land of Unfocused Multi-instruments so often.

The scope of musical styles on Piazzolla’s Tango: Zero Hour and Orchestra Baobab’s Mouhamadou Bamba are arguably less eclectic, with Piazzolla combining tango and classical, and Orchestra Baobab focusing on a mellow blend of African, Cuban and Caribbean music. These two albums are less concerned with incorporating contemporary Western music in their sound than Juju Music is, and if (like me) you don’t mind a more traditional sound, then Piazzolla’s melancholic accordion can be exquisite and the music of Orchestra Baobab can have a lingering beauty that tugs at all the right heartstrings. My placements of the albums were Piazzolla #19, Orchestra Baobab #20 and King Sunny Adé #97.
...will keep us together.

As far as I can tell we have 6 acts left with at least three albums in our top 60, including: The Cure (5), R.E.M. (5), Prince (5), The Smiths (3), U2 (3) and Springsteen (3). These albums comprise 40% of our top 60.

Thanks for the great reply! You hit on a reason why the Orchestra Baobab album didn't appeal to me that much - it's probably too mellow. I certainly didn't dislike that or the Astor Piazzolla album, but you know me: bright streaks of color like this or this and I totally dissolve into "oooh, shiny! Want, want, want!"

I'm with JimmyJazz on The Cure. If I had my way, Japanese Whispers and The Top would have joined the 6 Cure albums in our top 150. They are one of a couple artists that are actually within a mile of being within reach of Prince on my list.

60. AC/DC – Back in Black (1980)

[imgsize 250x250]http://rymimg.com/lk/s/l/187cd2c7a1fd5f ... 989999.jpg[/imgsize]

Score:
1316.82

Biggest fans:
Stephan (7/139), Bruno (8/50), Superfurry (14/125)

Not a fan:
Moonbeam (150/150), DaveC (144/150), Kingoftonga (138/150), Brad (137/150), Dan (136/150)

Comments:
"While I still think this is a little step down after Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, Let There Be Rock or Highway To Hell, it is still impressive to see a band survive this well to the death one a core member, and with anthems like Back in Black, Hells Bells or Shoot to Thrill, it remains blast, thanks once again to crazy Angus Young." Nassim

"What ‘Back in Black’ purportedly attempts to be is a raucous celebration of debauchery. What it sounds like is a monochrome, brainless drunken cesspool. Of all of the albums I have yet encountered in my lifetime, ‘Back in Black’ doesn't merely scrape the bottom of the barrel - it defines it. In theory, I could be a fan of AC/DC. I was quite the fan of hair metal as a child and I still enjoy some Mötley Crüe albums for their cheap, catchy thrills. However, ‘Back in Black’ just isn't fun. The album opens in merely irritating fashion with "Hells Bells", but what would act as an obnoxious low point of just about any other hard rock album I've heard actually serves as the ‘highlight’ of this monstrosity. From there, it trawls the bloated gut of mind-numbing stupidity with an endless litany of cliches, macho chest-pounding and sleazy come-ons without the decency of any flirtation. It truly is a bottom feeder. On top of that, Brian Johnson's disemboweled gravel-mouthed midget shrieking has to rank among the worst vocal performances I have ever heard, and I say that as a fan of a number of vocalists who actively defy staying in tune, such as Malcolm Mooney. Obviously, I'm in the minority with this opinion given the album's critical reputation and commercial success. There hence must be a place for ‘Back in Black’, but it is a place from which I would like to keep a healthy distance of at least a few time zones. Unfortunately, the tragic ubiquity of ‘You Shook Me All Night Long’ and the title track makes this an impossible quest, but a guy can dream, can't he?" Moonbeam

” A hard rock icon, does anything else need to be said? I admit Brian Johnson’s voice would normally be a turn off to me, but when it’s backed up by these raucous hooks, it seems entirely appropriate. No. 42” RockyRaccoon

Not a fan:
Otisredding (77/83)

Comments:
" Probably the Prince album that best adds up to more than the sum of its parts. Bursting with color and a slick sophistication, ‘Parade’ sees the Revolution in full splendor, , incorporating a wide assortment of influences and styles to put forth this stunning document of their prowess. ‘Parade’ is also the album that sees the band distribute the roles most, as Wendy and Lisa are heard singing throughout. Tracks like ‘Do U Lie’, which sounds as far removed from modern rock and roll any song in his oeuvre, doesn't feel awkward rubbing shoulders with the sassy funk of ‘Girls and Boys’ or the spiritual majesty of ‘Mountains’, which sums of the joy of ‘Lovesexy’ in an economical for minutes. It may not get the attention of Prince's more celebrated albums, but it is just as good." Moonbeam

" Prince is kind of all over the place on this one, but mostly in a good way. From Sly-style funk to crooner ballads to crystalline pop-rock to the acoustic closer it’s an album that’s depth and breadth is astounding, even if it’s a little uneven. It gets overlooked because of his other masterpieces, but it sits well beside them. No. 52" RockyRaccoon

Comments:
" There was no sign in the ’80s that Neil Young would make another great record, but ten years after his last one, out came Freedom. It’s got beautiful, acoustic folk numbers and crunching, grunge guitar rockers, including both versions of ‘Rockin’ in the Free World.’ What else could a Young fan want? No. 22" RockyRaccoon

"A very strong collection of songs - 'First We Take Manhattan' is my favorite, just because of how sinister it sounds, but nearly every song is one of Cohen's best (except for 'Jazz Police')." Kingoftonga

"Even when Cohen’s at his best, I’m a fan from a distance. When he’s at his second best, I’m even more so. But I do get a kick out of the slightly boozy, slightly creepy lounge lizard act. No. 115" RockyRaccoon

Not a fan:
Jirin (127/128)

Comments:
"This is one of the few albums, like Portishead’s Third, that I’ve dubbed 'too depressing & serious even for me.' On the three hit singles, at least—'Shout,' 'Everybody Wants to Rule the World,' 'Heads Over Heels'—Tears for Fears hits the bull’s-eye and then splits the arrow a couple of times." LiveinPhoenix

"Like a lot of eighties albums, this one has the hits and then there’s a big drop off to the other stuff. The hits are worth it when separated, though. No. 132" RockyRaccoon

"If 'Seventeen Seconds' is an ice-capped landscape, 'Faith' is a somber gray with songs emerging from and retreating to a thick fog." Moonbeam

"Unlike other Cure albums in this poll, this one doesn’t even have one song to recommend it. It’s like doing drugs. Not the addictive part, or the fun part, but the miserable coming down part. No. 149" RockyRaccoon

"An excellent album from an underrated band, Sound Affects predates the Britpop phenomenon by a good dozen years, definitely showing the Jam as a versatile act somewhat ahead of their time." Kingoftonga

"Smart, curt songs with boundless energy and pep. One of my favorite discoveries of this poll!" Moonbeam

Not a fan:
Brad (144/150), Michel (134/139), Stephan (127/139), Dan (139/150)

Comments:
"Possibly the greatest metal album of all time." Mattcienicram

“Only one Metallica album in a top 150 albums of the 80s really is a shame (especially given the likeliness of it ending on the very bottom of it). I would call Ride the Lightning the greatest metal album ever, but Master of Puppets and Reign of Blood are the strongest contenders, Master being by far the most straightforward and virtuoso of the two, without losing its fierceness and power, especially in its 2 opening tracks.” Nassim

"I’m not a big metal fan, but Metallica is one of the groups I like for the most part. I think I like them in comparison to most metal because to my ears it’s not just a barrage of noise, but I can actually hear what’s going on musically. I prefer the debut and self-titled black album, but this one’s good, too. No. 73" RockyRaccoon

Score:
1336.53

Biggest fans:
Romain (8/149)

Comments:
"The rough edges, shocking subject matter and brevity make 'Dirty Mind' a sort of hybrid between punk and funk. While his first two albums showed increasing flashes of brilliance, Prince carved himself a singular place in musical history in the form of this Uptown, which he would spend the better part of two decades populating with fans of all races, religions, and creeds." Moonbeam

"If you were to make a list of the ten most appropriately titled albums, this one would have to be on it. He certainly did have a dirty mind, and he lets it all spill out musically and lyrically in a thirty-minute blast of sexy funk that no one’s quite matched. And most of those who have tried just came off sounding like poseurs. No. 19" RockyRaccoon

"Acoustic-driven folk music, there wasn’t a lot of that in 1988, and certainly none this good. It was a breath of fresh air, an antithesis to the sound of the time, and lyrically it was a rebuttal to the 'greed is good' mentality of the Reagan ’80s. Come to think of it, it rings true today. Oh yeah, she also had a remarkable, understated voice to carry the message. No. 16" RockyRaccoon

"With each album, The Cure grew darker and more hopeless until this blood-curdling, nigh impenetrable cauldron took their despair as far as it could go. It's no wonder Robert broke up the band and the wildly fun 'Japanese Whispers' followed." Moonbeam

"It’s got a little more meat on it than some of their other albums; therefore I like it a little better. A little. No. 118" RockyRaccoon

Guilty admission: I listened to some 80+ albums for this poll so that I could make a list of all 150, which was a lot of fun! However, I must concede that one of my main motivations was to punish Back in Black as much as I possibly could. Seeing it drop 14 places makes it worth trawling through all six R.E.M. albums. Thankfully, there were plenty of other great discoveries along the way like Cocteau Twins, The Jam, Arvo Pärt, Philip Glass, Young Marble Giants, This Heat and This Mortal Coil.

The forum is being screwy right now and won't let me post the last five albums for today. I don't know why and it's annoying me. I'll try a few more times and if it doesn't work I'll post them tomorrow.

So much of the 80s I despised the only reason I contimplated voting was to get Cocteau Twins to rank high but I'm my mind: "what's the worst that can happen, it's not like my high ranking of the Cocteau Twins will mean the difference between getting them in the top 100 or not." Their placement: 101 LOL! "It's not like a band I loathe like Depeche Mode or New Order will be the reason they don't make the top 100." #100 AND 99 New FREAKIN' Order LOL!
