Moderately Acclaimed Albums #5 - The Draw

Post by Brad »

At long last, it's time for my favorite post of the year. The 2014 edition of Moderately Acclaimed Albums (#5) is here!

In short, you can go here to view the entire bracket:
http://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?tid=450674

Once again, we have a fine list. This time, there are a record-breaking 48 albums on the list that are completely unranked on AM.

There were 20 total submitted lists, so many albums failed to make the cut. Everyone had 6 or 7 make the draw, except TimmyWing, who managed 8 due to a few of his selections being duplicated by other submitters. So save your excluded choices in a file for next year, 'cause apparently we aren't nearly finished!

Eight albums were nominated twice. The five that made the bracket are:
R.E.M. - Reckoning (listyguy, TimmyWing)
Todd Rundgren - A Wizard, A True Star (Henry, TimmyWing)
Black Sabbath - Vol. 4 (Brad, Nassim)
Modest Mouse - The Lonesome Crowded West (Nassim, Logan)
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - F#A#∞ (Logan, TimmyWing)

These three did not make it due to being low on the lists of each submitter:
Johnny Cash - American IV: The Man Comes Around (Mattceinicram, Logan)
Genesis – Trick of the Tail (Mattceinicram, DaveC)
Pink Floyd - Meddle (Logan, Honorio)

The actual tournament will begin on March 10, so plenty of time to get a head start on listening. As always, we will have a "Predict It" contest, where you can take a stab at how you feel the bracket will play out.

As in the past, we will feature four matchups per week, one in each quarter-bracket.

I'll post the full lists from all the submitters soon... in the meantime, go and check out the selections... I think you'll agree we're gonna enjoy this one!

Is there a logic on the way the albums are put in the brackets or is it completely random ?
Because of the 38 albums (+ the moderately acclaimed of 2013 if it's not The Maze) I have listened to, 32 are in the first half and 21 in the first quarter ! I actually have listened to the first 12.

And I am the only unlucky one to have 2 albums facing in the 1st round (at least it means I will have one album in the 2nd round, that's already as many as 2 years ago !)

I also have a round 1 match-up that pains me greatly: Game 50

The order they are put in is first by their AM rank, then all the bubbling under albums (issued a spot via random generator in Excel), then Unranked albums (same). This allows the less well-known albums a little "room to breath" by not having them face the top, more well-established albums early on. I think it's worked out well.

So it makes sense that the ones you heard are primarily in the top half!

You made it go item for item by the AM rank? That's interesting, when I was running it I broke it into four groups of 32 based on AM rank but each individual group had random matchups.

Good to see two Pere Ubu albums one of which was not even nominated by me! I've heard about 40 of these.

That's funny! I never realized you did it that way, but the past two years have been done with the same method as this current one and it seems to be working ok (thankfully!).

Fun With Titles: Round One features American Gothic vs. American Water. Also, Zooropa vs. Animals.

This is looking pretty much epic. I have no ideia who will take this and some of the matches are pretty challenging, since the records are not only by great artists but also very different sonically! I'm glad to see some records from the last few years too like The Caretaker's. There's Have One on Me -- I wasn't the one who nominated, but I was cheering someone would; There's 808s and Heartbreak -- an album by a forum favorite that rarely gets mentioned here, so it will be fun to see the opinions on it; There are highly ranked albums that I quite don't find underrated personally, like James Blake's grower debut album -- which is facing a favorite of mine -- but even those are terrific choices; The return of last year's winner Brel and even King Crimson's Red, which if I remember well lost a match a few years ago against my nomination, Tori Amos' Under the Pink; Among them we notice great indie figures such as Deerhoof and even my second favorite R.E.M. album. I had nominated Joni Mitchell's For the Roses, so it was quite bittersweet to the see the more joyful Ladies of the Canyon making the cut instead, but it's a great Joni album nonetheless and there's even Laura Nyro's Eli in the game. The less-known brazilian records I chose made it. They're facing some well-established artists and genres, so I have no prospect of their future in game, although when I've noticed titles like Construção, albums by Fela Kuti, Jane Birkin, Compay Segundo, Pere Ubu I burst with joy in face of such variety. This might be our best draw yet; If everyone who have sent lists take part of the game throughout the year, it can be a diverse and enriching experience. I'll sure try as hell to have a consistent participation.

The draw is great. There are more albums I have never heard than last year, that is promising, there are sure to be great finds like Paix & Promenade. I am especially pleased to see nominations for Gang Gang Dance, Dirty Projectors, Compay Segundo & Linda Perhacs. Two of my nominations are headed for big first round KO's having been drawn against well known & popular albums that I would happily vote for - c'est la vie.

I had a feeling Foxygen would win the 2013 thread! Anyway, time to get started listening to these albums.
It's a shame the only Tim Buckley album to get through is Happy Sad...and that it's up against James Blake!

They are like children leaving the nest; we hope we have prepared them to be gracious in victory and resilient in defeat, but they are no longer ours, they are the world's.

Brad, your bracket intrigues me a lot. You have one of my selections ("The Colour of Spring") winning, which I find surprising. I don't expect them to pass Joanna Newsom :|

Also, I worry that you may have too much faith in Game Theory, after their performance in the 80s poll (though I hope you're right and I'm wrong).

lol I admittedly don't put a whole lot of thought into my picks for that, just run through with what feels right. I appreciate The Colour Of Spring now more than ever and feel I didn't do it justice in the '80's poll. The bracket results are always a surprise for me!

I have a question about the Jacques Brel album in week 4.

There seem to be a lot of Jacques Brel albums titled 'Jacques Brel', and when I search 'Ces gens-la' I only get one that says 'Ces gens-la Vol. 10'. Is this the correct Brel album?

I'm only up to week 8 in my listening (With 1 or 2 missing per week due to lack of Spotify inclusion). I'll wait till last minute to fill out a bracket when I've heard the most albums.

So far my favorite new discoveries are:
The Dismemberment Plan - The Dismemberment Plan Is Terrified
Fela Kuti - Original Sufferhead
Austra - Feel I Break

I haven't gotten to listen to many albums for this yet, because of the 70s poll, but "Neon Golden" is freaking awesome. I absolutely love it. The problem is it's facing "Red", which I also happen to adore. So the Notwist is my early favorite discovery.

I see it fine. Maybe they had some temporary problem with their servers, or perhaps it is the compatibility of the site with your browser. The problem persists? Have you tried other browsers?

Next year we should look for another website to run the bracket contest.

I keep trying to finish my bracket in Predict it, and whenever I submit a new round it has some random chance to get into this state where you send the request and it hangs indefinitely and never moves to the next round. They clearly have some weird technical and/or bandwidth problems on the bracketmaker website.

@Blanco

I'm trying other browsers now. But, every other time I've had a problem with a website, I've switched to Chrome and fixed it. I've never come across a problem that doesn't work in Chrome but works in other browsers. ;)

Edit: Finally finished it in Firefox. This has to be the first website problem of all time where there's a problem in Chrome but not other browsers.

Hey Brad, I just noticed that the Molotov and Maná albums have their names switched. Sorry, it was my mistake. It's just a letter, so I'm sure no one had trouble finding them, but just wanted to make that clear.

The albums that I thought were great enough to add to my list of currently 205 best albums of all time:

Exuma - Exuma
Neu! - Neu!
The Notwist - Neon Golden
Black Sabbath - Vol 4
Built to Spill - Keep It Like a Secret
Todd Rundgren - A Wizard, A True Star
Sun Ra - Lanquidity
The Pogues - If I Should Fall From Grace With God
The Dismemberment Plan - The Dismemberment Plan is Terrified
Modest Mouse - The Lonesome Crowded West
The KLF - Chill Out
Gal Costa - Gal Costa (Não Identificado)

The order is approximate sort of.

Edit: Oh and the thing I was the most surprised about was that there were as many as twelve albums like this. Oftentimes I chose these albums over my nominations.
I feel like that

I gave up after several attempts to complete the bracket using my chrome browser. The experience was very frustrating.

So far I've listened to anything on Spotify through week 12, and my favorite new discoveries so far are:

Fela Kuti - Original Sufferhead
Austra - Feel I Break
The Dismemberment Plan - The Dismemberment Plan Is Terrified
Wes Montgomery - The Incredible Jazz Guitar Of Wes Montgomery
Nina Simone - Pastel Blues
Frank Sinatra - Watertown
Duke Ellington - Money Jungle
