Random Rules January - Submissions!
Random Rules January - Submissions!
Welcome to the first Monday of the new year!
It's time for Random Rules, 2014 style!
All you need to do is submit your list of 10 random songs - the next ten that come up via the random generator on your entire music library. We'll pull them all together then start the next part in a couple days (48 hours or 10 lists, whichever comes last), then start the elimination process to create the Random Rules Jukebox for January.
Exciting, right?

For a random list this one is exceptional if I say so myself. There's the biggest record of 1910 (Casey Jones) and a nice Latin funk instrumental of "Cloud Nine" that was a hit in 1969. Something from Bert Williams, perhaps the first black star of stage and music. The Sierras with a very unique version of "Stormy Weather." A killer James Brown ballad, a big Northern Soul record (Shoes), a great Everly Brothers song in the wake of Phil's death, A DC5 flip side and a huge hit from when I was about 15 (Daniel Boone). But in the end I suspect that Sex Pistols song will enter the jukebox with the players we have here. We'll see.

I second Bruce's motion. No duplicate entries.
Re: Random Rules January - Submissions!
I disagree. That would no longer be the real first 10 songs that came out in random order. I do not think it's fair that the songs of someone's list have to change because of other's songs. Furthermore, in the game one can remove an own song per day besides the limit for that day, so one has the advantage to eliminate his own songs. If that song came out repeatedly, and we only allow it on the list of the person who it appeared first, we'd be promoting a disadvantage. It is a small disadvantage, but it is a disadvantage after all.Bruce wrote:The rule should be that once a track is posted by a player that it cannot be used in the same month by another player.Brad wrote:I believe that it is (within the same month - we've had several multiples over the full span). I think it should be the other way around. If the song appeared twice, it will have a double opportunity to enter the Random Rules Jukebox. We must treat them as different songs. And if you really don't want this song to enter the jukebox, you'll have to spend two of your opportunities removing it.
If we change the selection criteria by songs that have been played "randomly, but only if..." That's no longer random.
Re: Random Rules January - Submissions!
Nobody should EVER be allowed to remove something on his own list.Blanco wrote:I disagree. That would no longer be the real first 10 songs that came out in random order. I have MP3s in my library that are not music. If one of them came up randomly I would not enter it in the contest. I have loads of TV theme songs that are less than a minute long. If one of them came up randomly I would not enter it in the contest either. Many of the TV theme songs don't even mention who the artist is.

It's not really up for vote. The premise here is you list the next ten that come up. That's the whole point of the "Submission" portion... we just want to see the lists.YellowEyedDemon wrote:I second Bruce's motion. No duplicate entries.
Consider the "Elimination" part a separate entity, if that helps (I do). It doesn't matter if there are duplicates - it'll work out fine as is.

Speaking of which, I'll pull the lists together to start the Elimination part tomorrow, so still another day to submit lists!

Re: Random Rules January - Submissions!
Am I still on time? If so, my list in order of appearance:
The Rolling Stones - One More Shot
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Graveyard Train
Carl Orff - O Fortuna (performed by Rundfunkchor Berlin, Radio-Symphonie-Orchester-Berlin, conducted by Riccardo Chailly)
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Carry On
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Woodstock
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Ohio
Simon & Garfunkel - Song for the Asking
Grateful Dead - China Cat Sunflower
Muse - Endlessly
Alabama Shakes - Hold On
It seems iTunes is messing with me. 3380 tracks available, only 12 by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, but somehow it figured out a way to give us no less than three songs by the quartet; a quarter of the ones I own by them! And they came right after each other! How big are the odds? It fits my iTunes tendency towards Americana today, I guess.

Suppose my first 10 random songs contain the same song twice? I have a lot of songs where I have more than one MP3 of the same song, like mono and stereo, or short version and long version, or an alternate version along with the released version.
Light My Fire (single version) - Doors
Light My Fire (LP version) - Doors
If something like this came up would it be accepted?

Yes. Absolutely. This is simply a forum to list the next ten songs that come up. I personally prefer participants not to edit, but I can't/won't dictate what people actually choose to post.

Re: Random Rules January - Submissions!
Mattceinicram's list has two of my all-time top 5.
Here's my list:
R.E.M. - Just A Touch
The Beatles - Penny Lane
Richard Thompson - Am I Wasting My Love On You?
Alvin & the Chipmunks - Coast 2 Coast - (It will be many years before I can escape the hauntings of my young, stupid self )
"Weird Al" Yankovic - Amish Paradise - (Again?)
David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust
Bob Seger - Get Out Of Denver (Live)
Linkin Park - Breaking The Habit
The Beatles - Paperback Writer
Simon & Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water
This is from my family's shared library, so there are a few songs here I barely know.

What's important SHOULD be which records get into the jukebox, rather than the 100% randomness of each list that is submitted.

Hey Bruce, this is my favorite game in the entire forum, and I do think it's perfect as it is. So instead of arguing with you, I can only say that if you do not like how the game works, just don't play.
Moving on, WOW! There are many lists this month! I think that just shows how great the game is. Congratulations Brad! And there are still a few hours, so I hope to see even more lists.

Re: Random Rules January - Submissions!
I have a few interview type tracks that aren't songs either on my iTunes that came from special edition CD's. I think I would enter them personally. They would have no chance of winning, but it would be humorous and it's all part of the funBruce wrote:
