MCCh 2013 (22) December, 31

Post by Otisredding »

The best albums of 2013 (update December, 31)

The numbers presented next to each album title are the weighted average rating and the number of reviews (out of 29 included sources). The weighted average is based on a formula that includes a) the average of ratings and b) the number of sources that have rated the album.

New Entry or Re Entry

The magazines I used for the ratings were:
EUR: Gaffa-dk; Gaffa-sw; Jenesaispop; Laut; LesInrocks; MagicRPM*; Mondosonoro; Music-story; Nojesguiden; Plattentests; Playgroundmag; Sentire Ascoltare; Storia Della Musica
UK: Bowlegs; DIY; Drowned In Sound, The Guardian, Music OMH, NME, No Ripcord
USA: Allmusic; AV Club; BeatsPerMinute; Consequence Of Sound; Paste; Pitchforkmedia; Popmatters; Rolling Stone; Spin; Tinymixtapes

*Unfortunately, I have had to exclude MagicRPM ratings. The website has only this year posted 180 reviews. In addition, in recent months has decreased much the number of reviews and this distorts the result.

As I said in another thread, it's really too bad Beyonce didn't drop her surprise album earlier - it undoubtedly would have figured into a whole lot of EOY lists, given its general acclaim and the amount of discussion it's generated both for its music and its potential status as an industry game-changer (although with regard to the latter, it's difficult to imagine too many other artists being able to pull off something similar).

I'm pretty sure it was SPIN who said they would probably consider it for a 2014 EOY list. I don't really agree with it being considered a 2014 release but at least it would make some lists. With all the high ratings it received, including an 8.8 from Pitchfork, I would be surprised if all the other publications didn't follow suit with SPIN.

It would not surprise me at all to see Beyoncé on next week's Pazz & Jop list - possibly very high indeed, even top 5.
