Manu Chao - Me gustas tu - 2001
Latin alternative / Pop raggae

Album: ...próxima estación... Esperanza (RYM: 3.35/5)

Artist Biography by Chris Nickson (Allmusic)

Manu Chao helped begin the Latin alternative movement way back in the '80s -- although it had no name then -- and in his later work he cut a cross-cultural swath across styles and geographic boundaries. Chao was born on June 26, 1961, in Paris to Spanish parents -- his father, Ramon Chao, a respected writer, comes from Galicia, his mother Bilbao. Growing up bilingual, he was also influenced by the punk scene across the English Channel that happened while he was still in his teens. As a teen he played in bands, including a rockabilly outfit called Les Hot Pants, which won local critical praise but never went anywhere before breaking up. After that, Chao and his cousin began Mano Negra, named for an anarchist organization that operated in Spain. They recorded their first single, "Mala Vida," for a small label, but its French success led them to a contract with Virgin -- something many early fans decried as selling out.

Multilingual and decidedly multicultural, but with an edge heavily influenced by the punk rock of the Clash, Mano Negra seemed comfortably at home anywhere, be it North Africa or North America, in their music. Operating as a collective, without a manager, wasn't the best way to guarantee international success, and their attempts to break the U.S. at the start of the '90s didn't work -- America simply wasn't ready for their musical ratatouille. However, Europe loved them, as did South America. In 1992 they began a seemingly odd tour of Latin America, traveling by boat with actors and a circus, playing in port cities on both the Atlantic and Pacific sides, aided and abetted by various political guerilla groups, which sometimes didn't sit well with governments. In 1995, Chao moved the band to Spain, where he also formed another outfit, Radio Bemba Sound System, employing both musicians from Mano Negra and outside, which, according to rumors, caused rifts within the ranks, leading to the split of Mano Negra.

Chao then returned to South and Central America, spending the next few years drifting around with his guitar and a four-track, recording here and there. The resultant collection of songs was released in 1998 (1999 in the U.S.) under the title Clandestino and included a reworking of the Mano Negra track "King of Bongo," which was picked up for use on the soundtrack to Madonna's The Next Big Thing. The album itself took off very slowly, but after a year was going stronger than ever, a sleeper that found its niche in the burgeoning Latin alternative scene (even though its lyrics freely mixed English and French along with the Spanish). In 2000 Chao played a rare pair of shows in Los Angeles, and in June 2001 released Proxima Estacion: Esperanza, which showed that his musical self had been spending the last couple of years soaking up the sounds of the Caribbean. This was further explored on Radio Bemba Sound System, a live recording done in 2002 that was taken from the tour following Proxima Estacion: Esperanza. In 2004 Chao released his first French-only album, Sibérie M'était Contéee, about Paris, and in 2007 Radiolina, the artist's first studio album in six years, came out. It was followed in 2009 by the release of another live album, Baionarena, and by further heavy worldwide touring, including a number of high-profile festival appearances.

AllMusic Review by Alberto Moreno de la Fuente
Clandestino, Manu Chao's first solo effort, owed its greatness to its character. It was a minimalistic, yet filled with experimentation, album. But, what's most distinctive, it was honest, direct, intimate: the personal diary of someone who had traveled a lot, not only around Latin America but through life. Unfortunately, Chao seems to lose his way a little bit in Esperanza. Apparently intended to be a continuation of what started in Clandestino, it ends being just a clone of it. The reiteration of ideas and formulas takes away from Esperanza everything that made of Clandestino a memorable piece of work. The problem with Esperanza is that Chao, instead of deepening what he proposed in his first album, seems to overfly the surface of his ideas. The consequence of this is that he transforms charm into cliché, leaving the listener with a very light flavor. Anyway, Esperanza still has a bunch of great songs ("Mr Bobby," "Mi Vida," "Trapped By Love," "Me Gustas Tú," "Bixo") and good lyrics ("Mi Vida") which amply justify its listening. Dedicated fans will find that Esperanza is not what they were expecting, yet it's really easy-going and accessible so it will end working for them as well as for casual listeners.

Song (Wikipédia)
"Me Gustas Tú" is the second single from Manu Chao's second solo album, Próxima Estación: Esperanza. It has proved to be one of the artist's most popular songs worldwide. Its lyrics show a simple but catchy structure and it is primarily sung in Spanish but on the chorus French is also spoken. The song, as well as two other tracks from the same album, "La Primavera" and "Infinita Tristeza", feature the same background music. In fact, on the album, "La Primavera" fades and leads into "Me Gustas Tú".
Me gustan los aviones, me gustas tú.

Me gusta la mañana, me gustas tú.
Me gusta el viento, me gustas tú.

Jules Massenet - Thaïs - Méditation - 1903 - Classical
Opéra

Artist Biography by Robert Barefield (Allmusic)

Today Jules Massenet is best known for the operas Manon and Werther and the solo violin Méditation, from Thaïs. During his lifetime, however, Massenet was one of the most prolific and celebrated operatic composers on earth. The public anxiously awaited his output, and Massenet became both wealthy and famous practicing his craft. His legacy endures because of his ability to create music which portrays the intimacy of human relationships and the emotions and conflicts that arise from them. His gift for melody is reflected in a variety of arias that are among the most beautiful in the French operatic repertoire. He was also a brilliant orchestrator, a skill which allowed him to capture the moods and colors of a wide variety of places and eras. In addition to opera, Massenet composed songs, oratorios, ballets and orchestral works, as well as chamber music and works for solo piano.

Massenet was born in Montaud, France, to the family of a struggling metal worker. At the tender age of 10, he was admitted to the Paris Conservatory, where he studied with famed operatic composer Ambroise Thomas. In 1863, Massenet won the Prix de Rome, a prize which allowed him to travel and study in Italy. There the young man experienced the sounds and textures of the region and began to compose in earnest. While in Italy, Massenet met Liszt, who introduced him to his future wife, Mademoiselle Sainte-Marie.

Massenet's first opera, a one-act entitled La Grand' Tante (The Great Aunt), was produced (with only moderate success) at the Opéra-Comique in 1867. In 1877 Massenet's exotic opera Le Roi de Lahore (The King of Lahore) had a highly successful premiere at the Paris Opera, marking the beginning of his ascendancy as France's most prolific and celebrated operatic composer.

In 1878, his former teacher, Thomas, invited him to become a professor at the Paris Conservatory. Massenet achieved considerable success as a teacher, influencing an entire generation of French composers, including Gustav Charpentier and the song composer Reynaldo Hahn.

A highly prolific composer, Massenet worked continuously throughout his life, completing a great deal of music in addition to his 25 published operas. His approximately 250 songs often reflect the same melodic ingenuity and expressiveness that define his operatic works. Massenet composed several song cycles, including Poéme d'Avril (April Poem), which is often identified as the first French song cycle. Among the most famous of his solo songs are "Ouvre tes yeux bleus" (Open your blue eyes) and "Si tu veux, Mignonne" (If you wish it, sweetheart). The composer's First Orchestral Suite (originally entitled Symphony in F) premiered in 1867. This was the first of seven suites by Massenet, with programmatic subjects ranging from Alsace (Scènes alsaciennes, 1882) to Hungary (Scènes hongroises, 1871), and from Shakespeare (Scénes dramatiques, 1875) to Fairyland (Scènes de féerie, 1881). The most famous of his orchestral suites, Scénes pittoresques (Picturesque Scenes), was first performed in Paris during March of 1874. Massenet also composed several ballets, including La Cigale, Espada, and Les Rosati. In addition to Marie-Magdeleine, his oratorios include Ève (1875) and La Terre promise (The promised land, 1900). He wrote a considerable amount of incidental music for plays, including Sardou's Le Crocodile (1886) and Racine's Phèdre (1900). His only piano concerto was first performed in 1903 and receives occasional modern performances.

Wikipédia:
Thaïs (French pronunciation: [ta.is]) is an opera, a comédie lyrique in three acts and seven tableaux, by Jules Massenet to a French libretto by Louis Gallet, based on the novel Thaïs by Anatole France. It was first performed at the Opéra Garnier in Paris on 16 March 1894, starring the American soprano Sibyl Sanderson, for whom Massenet had written the title role.[1] The original production was directed by Alexandre Lapissida, with costumes designed by Charles Bianchini and sets by Marcel Jambon (act 1, scene 1; act 3) and Eugène Carpezat (act 1, scene 2; act 2). The opera was later revised by the composer and was premiered at the same opera house on 13 April 1898.

Wikipédia:
"Méditation" (pronounced: [meditasjɔ̃]) is a symphonic intermezzo from the opera Thaïs by French composer Jules Massenet. The piece is written for solo violin and orchestra. The opera premiered at the Opéra Garnier in Paris on March 16, 1894.

The Méditation is an instrumental entr'acte performed between the scenes of Act II in the opera Thaïs. In the first scene of Act II, Athanaël, a Cenobite monk, confronts Thaïs, a beautiful and hedonistic courtesan and devotée of Venus, and attempts to persuade her to leave her life of luxury and pleasure and find salvation through God. It is during a time of reflection following the encounter that the Méditation is played by the orchestra. In the second scene of Act II, following the Méditation, Thaïs tells Athanaël that she will follow him to the desert.

The piece is in D major and is approximately five minutes long (although there are a number of interpretations that stretch the piece to over six minutes). Massenet may also have written the piece with religious intentions; the tempo marking is Andante religioso, signifying his intention that it should be played religiously (which could mean either strictly in the tempo or literally with religiously-founded emotion) and at walking tempo. The piece opens with a short introduction by the harps, with the solo violin quickly entering with the motif. After the violin plays the melody twice, the piece goes into a section marked animato, gradually becoming more and more passionate (Massenet wrote poco a poco appassionato). The climax is reached at a place marked poco piu appassionato (a little more passion) and is then followed by a short cadenza-like passage from the soloist and returns to the main theme. After the theme is played twice, the soloist joins the orchestra while playing harmonics on the upper register as the harps and strings quietly play below the solo line.

The Méditation from Thaïs is considered to be one of the great encore pieces; world-class violin soloists such as Joshua Bell, Sarah Chang, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Itzhak Perlman, and Maxim Vengerov have performed the piece as soloists with major orchestras throughout the world. The Méditation has been transcribed for violin and piano and for other instruments as well. The cellist Yo-Yo Ma and pianist Kathryn Stott have recorded a version for cello and piano by Jules Delsart; the flautist James Galway, the euphoniumist Adam Frey, and trumpeter Sergei Nakariakov have also performed and recorded separate versions on their respective instruments, each with orchestral accompaniment.

Thanks a lot Moonbeam... do you will find Mylène on the list? :-)

Sadly, a huge part of the songs by 1965 to 1980 are missing.

Véronique Jannot - Aviateurs - 1988
Chanson / pop

Véronique Jannot (born 7 May 1957) is a French actress and singer. She was born in Annecy, Haute-Savoie
Moi
Je n'ai pas d'amour pour
Les hommes lourds
Aux piétons je dis non
Mon cœur reste sourd sans passion
Aux sans avion
Aon aon, aon aon

Les avions
Au bar de l'Escadrille
Je vois les vrilles
Et mon cœur a des bonds
Aux loopings que font ces garçons
Et leurs façons
Aon aon, aon aon

Refrain:
Vole
Je veux un amour qui vole
Quitter la terre qui me désole
Me désespère
Moi je suis faite
Pour l'azur et ces conquêtes
Pour le cuir des flying jackets
En coucou, en piper
Un aviateur

Moi
Les amours terre à terre
Rien à faire
Les folies qu'on peut faire
A bord d'un Fouga-Magister
Les vibrations
Aon aon, aon aon

Vole
Ah, qu'il vienne
M'emmène par dessus les antennes
De nos villes si quotidiennes
Aon aon, aon aon

Un aviateur qui me vole
Vole {2x}

Aviator
I,
I do not have love for
Heavy men.
To the pedestrians I say no.
My heart remains leaf, passionless
For the without-plane ones.
Aon aon, aon aon

Planes
At the bar "l'Escadrille"
I see the spins
And my heart jumps up
Because of the loops these boys are making
And their ways.
Aon aon, aon aon

Chorus:
Fly
I want a flying love
Leaving the earth that makes me sad
And despairs me.
I, I was made
For azure and these conquests
For the leather of flying jackets
On an old plane, on a piper
An aviator.

I,
The down-to-earth loves,
I don't care.
The crazy things you can do
On a Fouga-Magister.
Vibrations
Aon aon, aon aon

Fly
Ah, let him come
Taking me above the antenna
Of our so daily cities.
Aon aon, aon aon

An aviator kidnapping1 me.
Fly (x2)

Michel Ypar - Encore - 1970
Chanson

??????
Encore,
A l'automne qui pleure
Encore,
L'hécatombe des fleurs
Encore,
L'oiseau qui se recueille
Et la forêt en deuil
En deuil

Encore,
Ces tâches dans le ciel
Encore,
Cet immense tunnel
Qu'il faut traverser dans l'espoir
Qu'on sortira du noir, un soir

Il faudra pourtant bien
Le franchir ce chemin
Même si tu es loin
Même si tu m'as oublié
Je dois tout recommencer
Je vais tout recommencer
Encore.

Encore,
Une autre qui viendra
Encore,
Une autre qui dira
Encore,
des mots pour ne rien dire
Et des mots pour mentir
Mentir

J'aimerai pourtant bien
Rencontrer ce quelqu'un
Ce fameux magicien
Qui saurait me faire espérer
Qu'on peut tout recommencer
Qu'on doit tout recommencer
Encore.

Encore,
Le retour du printemps
Encore,
Le soleil renaissant
Encore,
L'amour contre la mort
Mais l'amour est plus fort
Plus fort
Encore.

AGAIN

Again,
To the crying Autumn
Again,
The massacre of flowers
Again,
The bird that gathers inwardly
And the forest in mourning
In mourning

Again,
These stains in the sky
Again,
That never ending tunnel
That we must cross in the hope
That we'll escape the dark
Some day

Still, that path must be crossed
Even if you're far
Even if you've forgotten me
I must begin it all from scratch
I shall begin it all from scratch
Again

Again,
Another who will come
Again,
Another who will say
Again,
Words that mean nothing
And words that are lies
Are lies

I would really like to
Meet that someone
That famous magician
Who will know to give me hope
That we can begin it all from scratch
That we must start it all from scratch
Again

Again,
The return of Spring
Again,
The sun reborn
Again,
It's Love versus Death
But Love is stronger
Is stronger
Again.

Arlette Zola - Deux garçons pour une fille - 1967
Chanson / Yéyé / swiss

Arlette Zola is a singer who represented Switzerland in the Eurovision Song Contest 1982. She was born Arlette Jaquet in the city of Fribourg on 29 April 1949. Her song, "Amour on t'aime", was an upbeat number in the style of the UK 1968 entry "Congratulations". Zola was placed third behind Germany and Israel. She made two further attempts at reaching the Eurovision finals. In 1984, she took third place in the Swiss final with Emporte-moi. 1985 also saw her in third spot, this time with Aime-moi, performed with Helder and the Heldernauts.

Two boys for one girl

Two boys for one girl
This is where it all begins
One figures this girl
Will manage to decide where her heart leans

Two boys for one girl
This is where it all goes wrong
1Even over a mere trifle, these two friends
Would squabble like cat and dog.

Now this kindest of girls
Leaves them to their business
Unmoved, she walks on by,
Not bothering to check the damage2
And from afield one can behold
A true cartoon fight

Two boys for one girl
You would say that's one too many
One thinks this girl
Will manage to avoid the worst, eventually

Two boys for one girl
Believe me, this is no laughing matter
Meet my witnesses, I will see you tomorrow
For a real duel, sword in hand

And the kindest of girls
Leaves them to their business
Unmoved, she walks on by,
Not bothering to check the damage
And from afield one can behold3
Which of the two boys will be hurt

And the kindest of girls
Leaves them to their business
Unmoved, she walks on by,
Not bothering to check the damage
And at home, she will await
The victor and jump into his arms

Translator comments:
1. I simply don't understand the French here. The translation is just an educated guess that takes a wide berth around what the text actually says.
A literal translation would be "Should these two friends talk to you about a problem / like a dog meeting a cat at night.
I listened carefully to the song, and there is no doubt the lyrics are correct.
I scratched my head hard to find a pun or a hidden meaning. If there is one, I did not find it.
2. "s'occuper s'il y a de la casse" is syntactically incorrect (should be "s'occuper de savoir..."). This sounds strange; I don't recall hearing people talk like that these last 30 years or so, nor does it ring a bell from movies or novels of the song's era or earlier.
3. "admirer" is quite off here. I suppose it was put there to match the previous similar line, but "admiring" which one will be hurt does not make more sense in French than in English. That's why I tried to mitigate the damage with "behold"

Bach - La caissière du Grand Café - 1914
Chanson / Comique troupier / music Hall

Charles-Joseph Pasquier (1882-1953), known by his stage name of Bach, was a French actor, singer and music hall performer.

La Caissière du Grand Café is a song written in 1914 by Louis Bousquet (1870-1941) on a music by Louis Izoird (1886-1974).

Classical of comic troupier, it was created by Bach, then taken over by several artists including Ouvrard, Fernandel (1947), Marcel Amont (1961) or Henri Genès (1965).

The Cashier Girl of the Grand Café

It's been a long time that after having my evening meal,
From the top of the bench where I go sit down
I can see in front of me a woman, a wonder,
Her hair is dark and her eyes are black.
In fact, I don't know so many women,
But I tell myself while looking at her charms:
Surely beauties such as this one,
I believe they don't abound.

Refrain
She's beautiful, she's cute
She's a really pretty person,
From the road one can see her
As she sits on her counter
She's always smiling,
One would say she's made of wax
What with her hair bun, always styled so neatly,
The beautiful cashier girl of the Grand Café

Surrounded by a lot of wine-glass
Very calm in front of her desk
She's in front of the cash register, the cashier girl,
Which renders her only half visible
And I, who love her so much already,
I say: "So much the better, that half her body is hidden,
For, if I saw all of her,
I would go mad, completely."

Refrain
She's beautiful, she's cute
She's a really pretty person,
And when I have a few cents on me, in order to see her better,
I go in, I order a black coffee
While melting my sugar in it
I stay for two or three hours, ogling her
What with her hair bun, always styled so neatly,
The beautiful cashier girl of the Grand Café.

It's interesting how couples in love
Understand each other using only eye expressions
I look at her, she looks at me
And we look at one another
When she laughs, I smile at her
When I smile, she laughs at me
Now I believe it won't be long
Before I see paradise.

Refrain
She's beautiful, she's cute
She's a very pretty person
For a long time I've been waiting to talk to her
For there to be no more clients inside her café
But I don't care; it only gets worse and worse
I believe she is the one attracting them all in
What with her hair bun styled so neatly,
The beautiful cashier girl of the Grand Café.

No longer able to control myself, I wrote her a note
I wanted to give it to her today
But I stayed silent, my mouth closed
I don't know what it is she understood
While looking at the paper in my hands.
She said with a sly air:
"At the end of the hallway, the door on the right,
All the way down, you'll find it with ease."

Refrain:
She's beautiful, she's cute
She's a very pretty person,
She sent me to the lavatory
It is not what I was expecting
Now she doesn't want me to love her anymore
But I don't care, I will love her anyway
And I'll never forget the beautiful hair bun, styled so neatly,
That belonged to the beautiful cashier girl of the Grand Café.

Jacques - Tout est magnifique - 2015 - Electronic
Electro / Microhouse

EP : Tout est magnifique (RYM: 3.59/5)

Jacques is Jacques. But Jacque + Jacque = Jacques. But it's basically the same guy. Lost between thoughtful meditation and deliberate spontaneity, Jacques composes electronic music to make normal and strange people dance together. Jacques is in a permanent duet with the beauty hidden in the sound of everyday things : "Tout Est Magnifique" (everything is beautiful).

Ludwig Von 88 - Bière et punk - 1986
Punk rock / Alternative Rock

Album: Houla La ! (RYM: 3.60/5)

Wikipédia:
Ludwig von 88 is a French punk rock and alternative rock band mostly active in the 1980s and 1990s, and which gained an important success in the underground scene of its country. The band has not released any new material since 2001, but has not disbanded and is thus officially still active. Their music is quite similar to that of influent French punks Bérurier Noir: two-fingered and distorted guitar chords and drum machine as a drummer. Their lyrics evolved along their career from nonsensical and often juvenile humour to something more serious and sometimes social and political.

The band had different line-ups, among which the most famous from the late 80’s featured Karim Berrouka on vocals, Nobru (real name Bruno Garcia, his new pseudonym is Sergent Garcia) on guitars, Laurent and then Charlu on bass, and Jean-Mi on programming.

They made their reputation through endless and delirious shows performed by disguised musicians. Among their notable stage clothing: cycling jerseys, diving suits, Mexican ponchos and various funny headgear.

Some of their songs are satires on stars like Louison Bobet, Nicolae Ceauşescu, Maria Callas, Jacques Chirac, Jodie Foster or deal with more serious topics like war: "Libannais raides", "Hiroshima"; drugs: "Le Manège enchanté", "Kaliman"; and misery: "LSD for Ethiopie", "In the Ghettos" — always with irony.
Bière et Punk bière et punk
Bière et Punk bière et punk

La bière est punk
Ma sœur est punk
Mon frère est punk
Ma mère est punk

Les p'tits oiseaux sont punk
C'est affreux oh mon dieu

Marie Bizet - Rythme et swing - 1942
Chanson / Jazz / Swing

Marie Bizet (1905–1998) was a French actress and singer.
Je viens de gagner l'gros lot
M'a dit ma cousine Cléo
Vous parlez d'une aubaine
J'ai trois flirts, m'a dit Marion
Mon ancienne amie d'pension

Dedidela dedidela dedidela
J'étais rythme en naissant
J'étais swing cent pour cent
Ça m'agrippe, ça me chipe
Ship ship ship ship ship ship
Quand j'étais toute gamine
Pour imiter la sourdine
Je me bouchais les narines
Billie billie billie bee ouin ouin
J'ai du rythme, j'ai du swing
J'ai le rythme des dancings
Dans la peau, j'ai l'saxo
Ho ho ho ho

Dedidela dedidela dedidela
J'étais rythme en naissant
J'étais swing cent pour cent
Ça m'agrippe, ça me chipe
Ship ship ship ship ship ship
Quand j'étais toute gamine
Pour imiter la sourdine
Je me bouchais les narines
Billie billie billie bee ouin ouin
J'ai du rythme, j'ai du swing
J'ai le rythme des dancings
Dans la peau, j'ai l'saxo
J'ai du rythme et j'ai du swing
J'ai du swing et j'ai du rythme

Quand j'étais toute gamine
Pour imiter la sourdine
Je me bouchais les narines
Billie billie billie bee ouin ouin
J'ai du rythme, j'ai du swing
J'ai le rythme des dancings
Dans la peau, j'ai l'saxo !
Rythme et swing
Rythme et swing
Rythme et swing, rhâ !

Caline Georgette - On danse - 1992
Alternative rock

Album: Des clous

Band's Facebook (Google Translate)
A group of rock speed and funk, Caline Georgette will have marked all those who saw this group on stage, by its tone, its rage and its originality. With more than 400 concerts between 1990 and 1994 in Europe or France, including a performance very noticeable at the Printemps of Bourges in 1993, the group navigating against the current, left an indelible trace in the alternative French rock of the time.
In 1992, they recorded "Des clous", a first album musically in and without floriture. Humorous texts that do not take gloves and sweep through the trajectories of losers, a social deliquescence of which we do not see the end. A joyful disc, stripping and basically desperate. The three brothers Livenais work with many musicians of various influences, are interested in the music of the world and often travel to Africa. In 1994, they met the Togolese singer Jimi Hope and will do with him a few concerts in France, in particular at the Francofolies of La Rochelle and a tour in Togo and Benin in 1995. During this period, they record "Tôt ou tard", which is already announcing the birth of an African rock, in which we already perceive another idea of the fusion of cultures. Since then, the Livenais brothers have specialized in afro-rock, creating the Akeikoi group in 2000 with Lassana Coulibaly, founder of the Yelemba troupe of Abidjan, and their latest project Kunbe born in Bamako in 2012 with 3 Malian musicians.

Évariste - Les pommes de lune - 1967
Yé-yé / Psychedelic pop / Novelty

Wiki (Google translate)
Évariste (whose real name is Joël Sternheimer) is a French singer, physicist and researcher, born on 31 January 1943 in Montluel (Ain).

He graduated in 1967 from Princeton University (theoretical physics) and subsequently worked as an independent researcher - with advice from André Lichnerowicz - on elementary particles and then on the regulation of protein biosynthesis by some On which he filed a patent in 1992.

The costs of the Vietnam War led to a reorientation of credits in American universities. Joël Sternheimer, doctor of theoretical physics of 23 years, sees his post of assistant at Princeton (at the home of Professor Wigner) suppressed. At that time, in France, the Antoine phenomenon took on the appearance of a true revolution, his engineering diploma set him apart from the classical world of pop and his fascinating abstruse texts, Évariste wrote a few songs.
Je veux quitter la Terre
Je veux découvrir d'autre sphères
Partir dans l'infini
Où brillent les fleurs de la nuit
Je veux aller sur la Lune
Goûter les pommes de lune

Je veux aller sur Neptune
Pour y faire fortune
Je veux aller sur Pluton
Pour y chanter mes chansons
Je veux aller sur la Lune
Goûter les pommes de lune

Oui je veux m'évader
Loin de cette planète
Je veux aller m'abreuver
Dans l'eau d'une comète
Je veux aller sur Andromède
Brûler les feux qui m'obsèdent
Ou jouer de la guitare
Au clair d'un quasar
Je veux aller sur la Lune
Goûter les pommes de lune

Je veux aller sur la Lune
Pour goûter les pommes de lune
Je veux entendre la musique
Que jouent les rayons cosmiques

Déjà je rêve au jour
Où céleste troubadour
J'attendrai fébrile
La singularité de Schwarzschild
Oh que vais-je découvrir ?
Les yeux vont-ils s'ouvrir ?
Pourrai-je y pénétrer
Tel autrefois Orphée
Aurais-je atteint le paradis
Où les anges ont logis ?

Je veux quitter la Terre
Je veux découvrir d'autre sphères
Partir dans l'infini
Où brillent les fleurs de la nuit
Je veux aller sur la Lune
Goûter les pommes de lune

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaah ah
Aaaaaaaaaaah ah
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaah ah

Moon's apples

I want to leave the Earth.
I want to discover other spheres.
Going to infinity
Where are glowing the night's flowers.
I want to go to the Moon
To taste the Moon's apples.

I want to go to Neptune
To make a fortune.
I want to go to Pluto
To sing my songs there.
I want to go to the Moon
To taste the Moon's apples.

Yes, I want to break free,
Getting away from this planet.
I want to drink
A comet's water.
I want to go to Andromeda
To burn the fires obsessing me.
Or playing guitar
Under the light of a quasar.
I want to go to the Moon
To taste the Moon's apples.

I want to go to the Moon
To taste the Moon's apples.
I want to hear the music
That play cosmic rays.

I am already dreaming of the day
When like a celestial troubadour
I will waiting, febrile,
For Schwarzschild's singularity.
Oh, what will I discover?
Will the eyes open?
Will I be able to enter there
Like Orpheus a long time ago?
Will I have reached Heaven
Where the angels used to be housed?

I want to leave the Earth.
I want to discover other spheres.
Going to infinity
Where are glowing the night's flowers.
I want to go to the Moon
To taste the Moon's apples.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaah ah
Aaaaaaaaaaah ah
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaah ah

Kool Shen - Un ange dans le ciel - 2004
Rap / Hip-Hop

Album: Dernier round (RYM: 3.11/5)

Wikiédia:
Bruno Lopes, alias Kool Shen, (French pronunciation: [kul ˈʃɛn]; born 9 February 1966) is a French rapper, actor and producer, with Portuguese origins. He is also a break dancer and a graffiti artist. He is a co-founder of Suprême NTM and one of the major figures of French rap. He was featured on Enhancer's album Electrochoc in the song "Hot". On 8 November 2009 it was announced that he was the first ever rapper to have an album featured on a football shirt, when Lyon accepted the deal with BetClic. Lyon will wear the shirt once, against Marseille.
Vivi is the nickname given by Kool Shen to Lady V (Vee), a dancer with whom he had a love affair. But they were already separated when she died.

Mais tu me manques, bébé, tu me manques

(refrain)

T'étais prête à tuer si on me touchait
On a grandi ensemble, construit ensemble
Tu te rappelles, nos fous rires, nos premiers instants, ton sourire
Mais tu me manques

(refrain)

(refrain x2)

An angel in Heaven

Dear Vivi, I'm writing this letter for you, full of loneliness
Like a lost soul, as usual
Ever since you've left
Ever since you disappeared
It's not the same anyomre
I've lost my Queen
And hence my whole kingdom is empty
My face also turned wrinkled, and my heart closed itself
That morning a stuff in me broke
And even if I answer "I'm fine, thanks"
I have a kind of bad taste of inertia in my mouth
I try to mask it but that's hard, Vivi, yeah I swear you, that's fucking hard
I'm feeling like nothing exists anymore, I'm afraid in fact
Since your eyes haven't been looking at me, nothing has happened
I don't feel really... I know yeah
And that's something hard for me to live
I have trouble after trouble, and finally you're no more here
What do I have left beside memories, tons of spoilt photos
And your smile, fixed for a too long time?
I just can't anymore, at least not in the same way
So every day I kill myself even a little more than the day before
And I kill time, sometimes in a bad way
From up there [in Heaven], you can feel it, I know
But I miss you, baby, I miss you

(chorus)
An angel in Heaven
Yeah, Lord, welcome one more angel
An angel in Heaven
Vivi, I don't tell you "farewell" but "see you soon"
An angel in Heaven
One more angel
An angel in Heaven
Vivi, for you I made my feather [for writing] cry

You and me did everything
You were always ready to give me your oxygene whenever you felt that I was smothering
You were ready to kill if anyone did me harm
Even ready to give me the moon, if you wanted it
We grew up together, build our lifes together
Went through the worst moments
We wanted to get old together though we weren't a couple anymore
We didn't give a damn, that's what we aimed
Do you remember our giggles, our first moments, your smile
The noiseless moments that meant everything?
And we could feed each other
Yeah, I was you, you were me so much
And our relatives and our mates could see it
You were my bowels, my motor and my solution to that all
So since then I've been killing time, sometimes in a bad way
A from up there, you can feel it, baby
But I miss you

(chorus)

What more can I say
Beside the fact that I'm not the only one missing you?
It's an abyss that you left, Vivi
Do you know that today you don't only haunt my nights?
For Fatou as well there's no summer anymore
Don't worry, Vivi, no don't worry
We'll hold our heads high
I know you'd have liked us to be stronger
So we'll do whatever it takes to get over it
Baby, don't worry

(chorus x2)

Séverin - Contrôle ta samba - 2016
Chanson / Pop

Album: Ça ira, tu verras ! (RYM: 3.33/5)

Wikipédia (Google translate)
Séverin's career begins with the electropop duo One-two discovered by the Berlin label Four music and selected by the CQFD contest of the Inrockuptibles in 2005.

After two albums (Love Again and The Story of Bob Star) and tours in Europe, Séverin began a solo career with the album Cheesecake where he made 14 of his compositions sing by 14 different women. They include Constance Verluca, Mai, La Fiancée, Lippie, Nadège Winter, Marina Gasolina (of the Bonde do Rolê group), Liza Manili ...

In 2012, he released his first solo album Séverin as singer-songwriter with a repertoire only in French.

In 2014, he mounts the label Neon Napoleon and Studio Navarin. He signs the Teeers group.

In February 2016, he released his second solo album in French Ça ira tu verras.

Mais la samba
Ça ne se contrôle pas

Aujourd'hui dans ses photos
À deux milles bornes du premier métro
Je vois un mec qui vit sa vie
Et ça me fait envie, ça me fait rêver
Lui qui regardait les avions passer
Quand j'avais peur de mefaire engueuler
Avait déjà son projet en tête
En regardant par la fenêtre
Il se disait :

« J'ai d'autres désirs
Contrôle ta samba
Que celui d'obéir
Contrôle ta samba
Un jour je vais partir
Contrôle ta samba. »
Car la samba
Ça ne se contrôle pas
Contrôle ta samba
Contrôle ta samba
Contrôle ta samba
Contrôle ta samba
Contrôle ta samba
Contrôle ta samba
Contrôle ta samba
Contrôle ta samba

Keep your samba in check

He had found a comfy seat
in the back of the classroom.
Dozing behind his schoolbook,
since he pictured himself in another life
he did the bare minimum
while the rest of us aped each other
ending up in the same shoes and jackets
as the big mouths of the boarding school.
Still, while these cried at home
as soon as a teacher raised a brow
he could not have cared less about authority
and sagacious advices
as they told him:

" If you want to make it
keep your samba in check
Got to get a grip
keep your samba in check
Time to take action
keep your samba in check "

Trouble is, samba is not something
you can keep in check

Two years in the boarding school
spent scribbling in his notebook.
I was not smart enough
to find him interesting.
Then the A level and college benches
rewarded with a crappy job in a megastore
with a tinpot dictator who thought he could
change the world by bossing people around
and said :

" If you want to get rich
keep your samba in check
Got to get a grip
keep your samba in check
Or else I'll boot you out
keep your samba in check "

Trouble is, samba is not something
you can keep in check

Looking at his photographs
taken 1500 miles from the Subway
I see a guy who leads a free life.
And I envy it, it makes me dream.
He who looked at the planes flying by
while I didn't for fear of being scolded
had already his project in mind.
Looking through the window,
he said to himself:

" I have other desires
(keep your samba in check)
than just obey
(keep your samba in check)
One day I'll leave
(keep your samba in check)"

Because samba is not something
you can keep in check.

André Dassary - Adieu tristesse - 1959
Chanson / Operetta

Wikipédia (Google Translate)
André Dassary (whose real name is André Deyhérassary), born in Biarritz on September 10, 1912 and died in the same town on July 7, 1987, is a French Basque operetta singer.
After high school at the Saint-Genès school in Bordeaux, he decided to go to the hospitality industry, became passionate about sports and became a professional masseur.

With a first prize in singing, operetta and comic opera at the Conservatoire de Bordeaux, he really began his career with the Collegians of Ray Ventura.

Captive in Germany at the beginning of the Second World War, he was freed and truly reached fame under the Occupation, notably with the operetta L'Auberge qui chante (1941) and a song all to the glory of Pétain, Maréchal Which became emblematic of the Vichy regime - and which, after the war, attracted some criticism, although its success did not falter thereafter (gold record for a million albums sold in 1952).

Among his successes are Ramuntcho (1944), a song by Vincent Scotto for music and Jean Rodor for the lyrics. He was the star of the operetta La Toison d'or by Francis Lopez and Raymond Vincy created at the Théâtre du Châtelet in 1954.

Tristesse, adieu tristesse.

Goodbye, Sadness

Sadness, goodbye sadness a night of carnival
Yes, but happiness is nothing but a tear
Shaky upon the edge of each flower
Brilliant in the shadows, in the end she falls
These are the first tears of our hearts

The happiness of the poor is truly in the intoxication
that the carnival will give to him
The poor man works ceaselessly, ceaselessly,
To forget his misery in the middle of the light

He is like a prince of proud appearance
But his happiness ends after the night is over

Sadness, goodbye sadness a night of carnival
One must take advantage of his youth
So as to laugh and to love, simply
One must indeed live before
The wish to have fun disappears when it is time

The wish to have fun when it is time
Sadness, goodbye sadness

In 2011, in search of new inspiration, Rone decided to leave his hometown Paris for Berlin. This led in spring of 2011 to release of the critically acclaimed EP So So So. A second album entitled « Tohu Bohu » (French expression meaning chaos) followed in October 2012, likewise on Infiné. The album featured the single Let's Go, with vocals by US rapper High Priest from New York's Antipop Consortium Resident Advisor gave the album 4 out of 5 and Rone won three 2012 Trax Magazine awards : Best French Artist, Best Album and Best Music Video.

Tohu Bohu gave rise to three singles : Parade, Bye Bye Macadam and Let's Go. All three singles were promoted by videos, the most successful, Bye Bye Macadam, having been viewed more than 15 million times on YouTube.

Early in 2013 the US indie band The National asked Rone to add some electronic sequences to their new album "Trouble Will Find Me" on 4AD. Rone added his distinctive to parts of the album. As The National’s lead singer Matt Berninger said in an interview "Rone's work has brought something fresh to our sound, I’m not saying we re-invented ourselves as a band, but we’ve opened new doors" The same year, Gabriel & Dresden, Juan Atkins, Chris Clark (musician) and Dominik Eulberg remixed respectively the tracks Bye Bye Macadam, Let's Go, and Parade and the godfather of French electronic music Jean-Michel Jarre was so interested by Rone's productions that he selected two of his tracks to feature on the compilation "Infiné by JMJ" The album Tohu Bohu was later re-released with a bonus disc with 6 unreleased tracks, one of them features John Stanier on drums After touring widely throughout France (Les Nuits Sonores, Les Vieilles Charrues) and abroad (Canada's Osheaga Festival, Belgium's Pukkelpop,...), Rone ended a busy year on October 31 by topping the bill at the prestigious Olympia concert hall in Paris.

2014 saw the release of the Apache EP, in April. Simultaneously Rone toured North America for the first time in his career, finishing off with an appearance at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival's The Do LaB Stage. In the same year, Rone made remixes for iconic French pop singer Etienne Daho and Breton (band)

In September and October, Rone toured USA and Canada for a second time, sharing the stage with Com Truise.

Early February 2015 Rone released his third studio album entitled "Creatures". The 12 track album features collaborations with avant-garde Japanese trumpeter Toshinori Kondo, The National (band)'s guitarist Bryce Dessner, Canadian dream-pop/post-folk singer Charlotte Oleena (a.k.a. Sea Oleena), French-Lebanese multi-instrumentalist and singer Bachar Mar-Khalifé, François & the Atlas Mountains' leader François Marry and cellist Gaspar Claus. A French edition of the album also features French rock/pop icon singer Etienne Daho.

On October 30, 2015, Rone played a sold-out Olympia hall in Paris, the special show featured chord trio Vacarme as well as Etienne Daho and François Marry of François & the Atlas Mountains.

Right before Björk in 2015, Rone releases the first video clip in virtual reality, making him a pioneer in the field.

He also collaborates with sound engineers from Radio France on binaural versions of the tracks "Apache", "Quitter la ville" and "Acid Reflux", reproducing an audio 3D effect.

Les Ramoneurs de menhirs - Dañs Gwadek 1 - 2007
Celtic/Punk

Gilbert Montagné - The Fool - 1971
Pop soul

Album: Gilbert montagné (RYM: 3.39/5)

Gilbert Montagné (born 28 December 1951 in Paris) is a French musician from the Ménilmontant neighborhood in Paris and Bourbonnais, a pianist, organist, and a singer. He is a decorated Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters. Blind since birth, he is best remembered for his international hit "The Fool", which was a number 1 single across Europe in 1971. In France he is still a popular albums and concert artist, having toured with the likes of Johnny Hallyday.
No, no don't let me play the fool,
I can't really love you by the rules
For my love is sweet and free
No, no don't let me play the fool,
For this thing you ask oh ! it's so cruel,
Can't you see it isn't me.

What you ask of me is just to be your clown,
Someone you can lead about and show around,
Why make of our love a children's puppet show
Can't I simply love you in the way I know,
What I ask of you is not to turn away,
Listen to the words that I'm trying to say,
Our love could be a new adventure every day,
Cause I love you, love you, love you, love you.

No, no don't let me play the fool,
I can't really love you by the rules
For my love is sweet and free
No, no don't make me play the fool,
For this thing you ask oh ! it's so cruel,
Can't you see it isn't me.

All I want from you is a little sympathy
Try to understand what it would be for me
All my hopes and dreams would now be bound and tied
Any hope of freedom would have surely died,
I want to know that I can fall in love again
And be sure that my love will never not restrain
So please just let me love you in the way I know,
Cause I love you, love you, love you, love you.

No, no don't let me play the fool,
I can't really love you by the rules
For my love is sweet and free
No, no don't make me play the fool,
For this thing you ask oh ! it's so cruel,
Can't you see it isn't me

Tiwony - Mon continent - 2011
Raggae

Album: Cité soleil

Carnet de Bord.info
Tiwony has been a leading French reggae artist for 20 years. It could have been Jamaican as its charisma and inspiration are recognized in metropolitan France, overseas territories and all over the African continent. There is Capleton in him with his mystical side, there is Elephant Man with his scenic energy, but beyond these comparisons, Tiwony remains Tiwony: a unique artist, determined and more than talented.

To see it arrive in 2014 with a 100% reggae album is therefore an important event for his career, a real culmination ... The 17 tracks of "Roots Rebel" were recorded between Paris, Kingston and Dakar, mixed and mastered by the producer And Jamaican sound engineer Gaylard Bravo to the mythical Anchor Studios in Kingston.
The return to roots in Jamaica was essential for Tiwony to pay tribute to the founding fathers of reggae, as on Afreeka Unite, sung duo with the late Bunny Rugs (lead singer of Third Word who died in February 2014). Rastaman convinced, committed and rebellious, Tiwony offers conscious texts (Roots Rebel, The Gold emerges from the mud) to a whole generation.

He promotes a return to nature, with the gentle Air Pur or Ma colline, on which he rises against the oppression and exploitation of Babylon. It evokes the return to the original continent the international Repatriation, interpreted with the Guinean Takana Zion, where the Kora flirts admirably with the low battery duo ....
Africa is obviously present on the album (Rue du Castel) where also universality and poetry dominate (Papiyon La). With this new opus, we take the measure of the artistic and human path traveled by the artist since its beginnings. Surrounded by the talented Straika D, Typical Féfé, Turbulence, Bunny Rugs, Goldee and the excellent Joëlle Ursulle ...

Pop

Regrets is a French band created in 1983 in Montpellier by Agathe Labernia, with musicians Jacques Lyprendi, Gabriel Lecorre and Frederic Schlesinger.

We owe him the hits "J'veux Pas Rentrer Chez Moi Seule" and "Tous L'monde S'amuse". The group dissolved shortly after, but Agathe continued a solo career until 1987 with singles that unfortunately did not so well.

(Refrain)

Puisque j'suis perdue, j'essaie d'trouver

Tu veux m'faire croire qu't'as mieux à faire
Maint'nant j'suis trop fatiguée pour danser
C'est intelligent, j'ai envie d'tuer

I don't wanna go back home alone

I don't wanna go back
I don't wanna go back home
I don't wanna go back home alone
I don't wanna go back
I don't wanna go back home
I don't wanna go back home alone

I'm going to a concert to see boys
There are plenty there, that's so cute
They are so cute, so arousing
I love their profile, their charming clothes
The one I prefer, I follow him on the street
He disappeared and I got lost
I don't wanna go back, I wanna keep talking
Be silly and let myself be kissed, no

Refrain

Since I'm lost, I'm trying to find
A pretty boy who wants to help me
To buy me a drink, to make me turn
Just an hour or two to help me dance
But, why don't you wanna, you scared or what?
No, I'm not going away, no, not without you

I washed my pussy that's all wet
I'll be all alone in my cozy bed
You want me to believe that you have better things to do
Ok, let it go, you're really too stupid
Now, I'm too tired to dance
It's smart, I wanna kill
To bring back the body of a pretty boy
To keep him huddled in my bed tonight, no...

Refrain

Hi Romain, this seems to be the Belgian delegation so far (or semi-Belgian in the case of Django Reinhardt  ). Do you know of any others in this impressive thread? I would like to know more about French-language music in Belgium or just music in Wallonie in general, because unfortunately they don't get a lot of attention in Flanders (unless it's Brel, Arno or Stromae)

And if you need some more inspiration, here are some other interesting Belgian songs and bands ;)
Lio - Banana split
Marie Warnant - Exit

Hello Chilton,

I'm very surprised to not have still put Lio and Stromaë, I have to check my list to be sure :-)

Arno is my next start of page with "Les yeux de ma mère" :-)

And except Ariane et les 10/20, all the others are in my list of artists "to come" !

Thanks to check this thread. Have a good day.
