L'amour, l'amour, l'amour

Love, love, love
Always talked about
Ah, love, it's a timid spring
A softened light, or often a ruin
Love, love, it's time's pepper
A wind gust, leaves under the moon

Love, love, oh, love
Always talked about
Love, put a cap on the night
And day wears a mask
That prompt us to grimace
Love, love
Sometimes it's even just another person's face
Who isn't one or the other

To love, love, love
Always talked about
Ah love, love, it's more than once
An empty basket in hand, the rainbow on two hearts

Ah, love, love
Ah, love, it's when I love you
Ah, love, it's when you love me
Not telling it to me
Not telling it to you
Ah, love, love
Love is when you love me
Love is when I love you
Without telling you
Without telling me

Baloji - Soleil de volt - 2018
Belgium, Hip Hop, Soukous, Art Pop

Album: 137 Avenue Kaniama (RYM: 3.30/5)

Wikipédia:
Baloji (born 12 September 1978) is a Belgian rapper, MC and hip hop artist of Congolese origin. Known as MC Balo in the hip hop group Starflam, he continued as solo artist starting 2004.

Beginnings with Starflam
Born out of wedlock to a Belgian father and a Congolese mother, he moved to Belgium with his father to live in Ostende losing all contact with his mother. Feeling estranged in his new environment and after disputes with his father and petty crimes and problems with police, he quit home and lived in a youth delinquent house working on his passion of rap and dance.[1] Alongside his friends, he started the hip hop band Starflam at age 15. The band's self-titled debut album in 1998 was Starflam and the follow-up album Survivant released on Capitol / EMI in 2001 went platinum and was rereleased with a Survivant - Édition Spéciale in EMI the following year. In 2003, the band had yet another studio album Donne moi de l'amour. But after differences with the other members of the band, Baloji quit music in 2004.

Solo
After Baloji discovered a letter from his mother that he hadn't seen since 1981, and after winning a poetry competition in Paris, France, he decided to return to music in 2006 as a solo artist. His debut solo album in 2008 entitled Hotel Impala was an autobiographical album about his life, including a hearty response to his mother's letter. The album was certified gold, with the album winning two "Octaves de la musique" awards as well as Rapsat-Lelièvre Award and Brassens Awards for Lyricists. He followed it up with albums Kinshasa Succursale in 2011 and 64 Bits and Malachite in 2015.

Soleil de Volt
Néant de Lune
La nuit vivote ici
J'y ai laissé ma plume
Moi le traîne-savates
En carton-pâte
Couché sur les coussins de kilowatts
Mon cœur, une dynamo sans fil
Ma peau Thermolactyl

[Refrain]
Ils brillent comme des bougies
Sous des soleils de Volt
Ils brillent comme des bougies
Sous des soleils de Volt
Ne réagit que par émojis
Masques pour les oiseaux de nuit
Ne réagit que par émojis
Masques pour les oiseaux de nuit

XXX (lingala?)

Soleil de Volt!
Ils brillent comme des bougies
Sous des soleils de Volt
Ne réagit que par émojis
Masques pour les oiseaux de nuit
Soleil de Volt!

[Refrain]

^I was trying to suggest my ears were burning, I didn't quite pull it off! Oh well, 137 Avenue Kaniama's a really fun album in the same mould mixing rap with the likes of highlife on L'hiver indien and Afrobeats on Glossine, so I hope you give the whole thing a try :music-listening:

It's life-affirming, isn't it? I don't know if Mbongwana Star fully qualify for this thread as they mainly sing in their mother tongue (Lingala) with only occasional French but they're another Congolese act I think you'll like if you haven't heard their album From Kinshasa. Not worlds away from Songhoy Blues at times but far more centred round electronics. Here's their most 'French' song (the title's in French, I think that's it) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6zO6coOSRw0

Bernard Parmegiani - Espèces d'espace - 2004 - Electro
Musique electronique, electroacoustique, acousmatique

Wikipédia:
Bernard Parmegiani (27 October 1927 − 21 November 2013) was a French composer best known for his electronic or acousmatic music.

Between 1957 and 1961 he studied mime with Jacques Lecoq, a period he later regarded as important to his work as a composer. He joined the Groupe de Recherches Musicales (GRM) in 1959 for a two-year master class, shortly after its founding by Pierre Schaeffer. After leaving his studies with Lecoq, he was first a sound engineer and was later put in charge of the Music/Image unit for French television (ORTF). There he worked in the studio with several notable composers, Iannis Xenakis, for example.

While at ORTF Parmegiani produced music for numerous film directors including Jacques Baratier and Peter Kassovitz, and for A, a 1965 short film animated by Jan Lenica. He also wrote a number of jingles for the French media and the "Indicatif Roissy" that preceded every PA announcement at Terminal 1 of Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris until 2005.

Parmegiani composed his first major work, Violostries, for violin and tape in 1964 for a choreography performed for Théâtre Contemporain d'Amiens directed by Jacques-Albert Cartier. During a visit to America in the late 1960s, Parmegiani researched the link between music and video and on his return produced several musical videos, including L'Œil écoute, and L'Écran transparent (1973) during a residency at Westdeutscher Rundfunk in Germany. In the 1970s, he also became involved with live performances of jazz and performed with the Third Ear Band in London.

At this time Parmegiani also started writing acousmatic pieces for performance in the concert hall: examples are Capture éphémère of 1967 which deals with the passage of time, and L'Enfer (1972), a collaboration with the composer François Bayle, based on Dante's Divine Comedy.

Parmegiani composed the music for Walerian Borowczyk's films Jeux des Anges (1964) and Docteur Jekyll et les femmes (1981), the soundtrack for the latter comprising cues Parmegiani re-arranged from his 1972 work Pour en finir avec le pouvoir d'Orphée.

In 1992 Parmegiani left the GRM and set up his own studio in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. In April 2010 he sat on the jury at the sixth Qwartz Electronic Music Awards, a promotional project and support group for electronic music artists.

Parmegiani has been cited as a major influence by younger experimentalists like Aphex Twin, Autechre and Sonic Youth. Works of his were performed at the All Tomorrow's Parties festivals in 2003 and 2008.

His music has won awards, among them prizes from the Académie du Disque Français in 1979, SACEM in 1981, Les Victoires de la Musique in 1990, and the Prix Magister at the Concours International de Bourges in 1991. In 1993 he was awarded the Golden Nica Award at Prix Ars Electronica for Entre-temps composed the previous year..

Bernard Parmegiani:
"This title, inspired by Georges Perec, led me to become interested in the possible evolution of certain sounds according to the space in which they appear. A sound, like a signal, can incite the imagination to extend it in a musical way.

Indeed, dreamy listening to acousmatic musical pieces sometimes leads me, through play, to mentally modify my listening point. When the work invites me to do so, I go back and forth between a more intimate listening to the sounds or, on the contrary, a more distant one: an exploration inside - outside the space in which they are situated. I have often reduced this notion of space to a singular point which then becomes a place in which sounds live and die. The use of a deliberately heterogeneous materialology is intended to provoke contrasts creating diversified planes.

Vast or intimate, public or private, closed or open, enigmatic or locatable, these spaces generate a specific sound climate. I have chosen to "reveal" them (in the photographic sense of the term) slowly. This is how spaces appear whose meaning is blurred by the appearance of heterogeneous sounds. Of various origins: natural, instrumental, electronic or created from scratch, they underline the strangeness of the place where they are produced. On the contrary, other spaces in which sound signs are perfectly identifiable appeal to the imagination and offer an escape to an elsewhere."

For the thousandth by the way, and to ask again what I had done for the 500th...do you think, for the lurkers, that there are some types of songs missing in this thread, or is the variety suitable for you?

And I'd like to know what you like best and what you like least?

1000 songs by 1000 different artists, and this thread's variety continues to surprise me. Please keep up the good work, Romain. This might be the greatest "lettre d'amour" for French music in the history of the internet.

We're too busy lurking to comment :P I haven't plunged in deep enough (I will do after all the listening I need to do for the A-T albums poll, honest!) but the appeal's similar to Biggest Fan, you don't know what you'll be treated with from one day to the next and no bias is paid to any genre or era, so you get some genuinely unanticipated discoveries. Bravo Romain, encore !

Thanks mileswide.
I've made a lot of discoveries myself... and I confess that I would like to do without certain songs that I don't like but which are representative of what was listened to at one time.
If it was up to me, we'd have syntwave, library music and funk every two days :-)

Bisou de Saddam - Printemps noir - 2018
Garage, Neo-Psychedelia, noisy-pop

Album: Merci infiniment !

Gonzaï (DeepL translate)
Bisou de Saddam, who's that? Four boys in the sirocco: Dudi, Stroska, Mehdi and Elfried. Guys trained at the drum machine and GarageBand who wanted to accelerate with a bass and drums. After a few years of skimming the concert halls and fine-tuning their set with their friends from the Villejuif Underground, they finally get out of the café-concerts to produce an 8-track. Album released under the aegis of their indie label Si Moiré Disques. Indie, Indie and more Indie to keep what? Probably their artistic freedom. And it works.

It's raw, the voice fades away in front of somewhat strong harmonies but we're happy to listen to Bisou de Saddam. It's a strange pleasure to be in front of a psyche band that's not afraid to hold back its ideas. There's no mistake about the merchandise and we're getting value for our bandwidth. This album goes from pop songs to experimental rock dear to the Brian Jonestown Massacre, with the impression of going into their lives and their deliriums. Anti-radio-edit tracks, libertarian anthems; "Merci Infiniment! " is a rock'n'roll blast. The expression of a certain idea of a live studio with guitars saturated but not too much. A little more and we would have fallen into tinnitus.

Pierre-Gabriel Buffardin - Concerto à 5 en mi mineur for flute - 1725 ? - Classical

Wikipédia:
Pierre-Gabriel Buffardin (Toulon, 24 March 1693 - Paris, 13 January 1768) was a French flutist and composer of the late Baroque period. He was a son of Jean-Joseph Buffardin (Vaison-la-Romaine, 22 July 1664 - Avignon, 28 August 1726), an instrument maker[citation needed].

Buffardin was the principal flutist of the orchestra (Hofkapelle) at the court of the Elector of Saxony in Dresden from 1715 to 1749. He was the teacher of flutists Johann Joachim Quantz, Pietro Grassi Florio, and Johann Sebastian Bach's elder brother, Johann Jacob Bach, whom he met in Constantinople in 1711.

Buffardin's Concerto in E minor for Flute is the only work which it is certain he wrote. Quantz said of Buffardin: "Il ne jouait que des choses rapides : car c'est en cela qu'excellait mon maître." (Translation: "He only played fast pieces; for in that my master excelled.").

Antoine Mahaut claimed that Buffardin was the inventor of the flute's screw cap and the foot register; it remains uncertain whether or not a transverse flute stamped "Buffardin le fils" (discovered in 2015) may be attributed to him or a relative.

Caravan Palace - Lone Digger - 2015 - Electro-Jazz
Electro Swing, Nu-Disco, Gypsy Jazz

Album: <I°_°I> (RYM: 3.03/5)

Wikipédia:
Caravan Palace is a French Electro-Swing band based in Paris. The band's influences include Django Reinhardt, Vitalic, Lionel Hampton, and Daft Punk. The band released their debut studio album, Caravan Palace, on the Wagram label in October 2008. The record charted in Switzerland, Belgium, and France, where it reached a peak position of number 11.

The band formed as a three-piece when they were recruited to compose the soundtrack for a silent adult film. Loïc Barrouk took an interest in the project and booked the band a recording studio and a series of gigs. More performers were required for the live concerts and the other three current band members were found after searching on MySpace.

The band became popular on the internet after releasing a number of demos and promo singles. From 2006 to 2007 they spent a year touring around France, and their first festival appearance came at the Django Reinhardt Jazz Festival in 2007. Following this emergence, the group were signed by the Paris-based Wagram Music record label. They spent the next year recording material for their debut studio album.

On 20 October 2008 the self-titled Caravan Palace was released, preceded by the single "Jolie Coquine". The album received praise for its traditional jazz inclinations, and placed in a number of European albums charts. In Switzerland, the album reached number 72 and in Belgium it achieved a position of 42. The album performed best in the band's native France where it attained a peak position of 11 in August 2009, and remained on the French albums chart for 68 consecutive weeks. The band released their second official single, "Suzy", on 24 February 2009.

On 3 October 2011, the band released an EP titled Clash, featuring two new songs and four remixes of them. The band's second album, Panic, was released on 5 March 2012.

In 2014, the band remixed Drake Bell's single "Bitchcraft".

The band released the single "Comics" on 22 June 2015, and their second single "Lone Digger" on 18 September 2015.

The band's third studio album, Robot Face, was released on 16 October 2015. They made a video for their track "Mighty" and previewed another song, "Wonderland", in a short promotional video.

In 2015, they appeared on Later... with Jools Holland on 27 and 30 October, and on The Jonathan Ross Show on 31 October. Subsequently, they appeared on Jools' Annual Hootenanny on 31 December 2016/1 January 2017 singing a cover of "Black Betty" and "Lone Digger".

On 4 February 2019 the band announced the release of a new single titled "Miracle" on 8 February 2019.

On 28 June 2019 they released a single titled "Plume".

On 16 August they released a single titled "Supersonics".

Their latest album, Chronologic, was released on 30 August 2019.

Samy Thiébault - Rebirth - 2016 - Jazz

Album: Rebirth

Samythiebault.com
Born in the Ivory Coast to teachers, Samy Thiébault received a traditional musical education at the Conservatoire de Bordeaux before entering the prestigious Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris to study jazz (class of 2008).
While studying music, he also obtained a Master’s degree in philosophy, with high honors, from the Sorbonne (2001). The album Blues For Nel came out in 2004, followed by Gaya Scienza in 2007, and Upanishad Expériences in 2010. This last album was the first project produced by the label he created and now directs, Gaya Music Production.
With the 2013 album Clear Fire, audiences fell hard under the spell of his music, prompting the press to say of his playing that it is “Coltranian in the best sense of the word” (Nouvel Obs). Other publications were unanimous in their praise: Revelation JazzMag, Coup de Cœur France Musique, Playlist TSF, Séléction JazzNews, L’Humanité, Télérama… Samy Thiébault collaborates regularly on dance, theatre and cinema projects, is frequently on tour with his quartet, and is a professor at the Choisy-le-Roi conservatory near Paris.
The 2015 album Feast of friends, an homage to the Doors, marked a turning point in Samy Thiébault’s career. The newspaper Libération said of Thiébault that he “dances somewhere between trance and spiritual communication.” Feast of friends was the occasion for an international tour covering four continents over the course of one year. The group played at the main festivals and stages in Europe, securing its place on the public and professional scenes alike.
Another stage in the journey took place in 2016 with Rebirth, an in-depth project exploring new compositions by Samy Thiébault written for the quartet. The album deals with the urgency and necessity of melody as a structuring, freeing element in the most modern, personal, and generous form of Jazz possible. This album was also an opportunity to work and record with the great trumpeter Avishai Cohen. Rebirth was released in September 2016 on Gaya Music Production (distributed by Socadisc). In the wake of the album’s critical acclaim, Samy was a raised to the level of the “most important, emblematic musicians of his generation” (France Inter) and the album was named “the best Jazz album of the year” (Fip). The album’s success has led to shows throughout France (venues include the Olympia, Café de La danse, Festivals de Marciac, Nice, and Sètes) and abroad (China, Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia, West Africa, and more). This is more than enough to confirm Samy’s place among “the greatest Jazzmen of France” (JazzNews) and to set the stage for his next diptych album, scheduled for 2018-2019: a musical journey through the Caribbean and the Indies…

Sages comme des sauvages - Luxe Misère - 2020
Chanson, Folk

FIP ( DeepL translate)
The Franco-American-Greek-Corsican-Brussels Sages comme des Sauvages quartet likes to collect and transform songs and instruments to enrich its own world folklore. To peddle the repertoire of its first opus Largue ta Peau, the group travelled from Reunion Island to Quebec with its second degree as a bulwark against the violence and disillusionment of our times. Part of the album was recorded on Reunion Island, as well as the video clip of the eponymous track Luxe Misère, to be discovered in preview.

Led by Ava Carrère and Ismaël Colombani, the quartet made up of Osvaldo Hernandez (Afro-Latin percussion) and Emilie Alenda (bassoon, keyboard, vocals) sign the lush arrangements of this second album recorded by producer Jean Lamoot (Alain Bashung, Noir Désir, Raphaël, Dominique A...). The icing on the cake was the maloya singer Danièl Waro's vocals on the track Le Goût de la Fumée.

Between tribal and urban universes, the merry adventurers mix maloya, calypso, rebetiko or even country, with a great deal of Brazilian cavaquinho, drums, Greek bouzouki, plus a dombrah from Kazakhstan, Mexican and Malagasy guitars...

Twelve poetic or wild titles, to work on the fights to come, between luxury and misery, anger and anguish, humiliation and impunity, cry of fear or cry of misery, mouth of love or friendship.

Bill Deraime - Faut que j'me tire ailleurs - 1980
Blues, Blues rock

Album: Plus la peine de frimer (RYM: 3,62/5)

Artist Biography by Jason Birchmeier (Allmusic)

Bill Deraime is a French blues singer, songwriter, and guitarist whose career took flight during the early '80s and who remained active long thereafter, releasing a long line of albums well into the new millennium. Born Alain Deraime on February 2, 1947, in Senlis, Oise, he become deeply interested in American music as a teenager, particularly the blues, soul, and folk. In 1968 he moved to Paris at the height of the social revolution then overtaking France and adopted a bohemian lifestyle, playing music in the streets, forming an underground folk club, volunteering for social causes, and so on.
Moreover, he formed a series of bands during the 1970s -- including one, Bill et Flo, that featured his wife and made some commercial recordings late in the decade -- and found himself stylistically drifting deeper into the blues. In 1979 he made his full-length solo album debut on the Argile label with the self-titled Bill Deraime, on which he explored his vision of the blues.

One of the first Frenchmen to perform blues music from the standpoint of a purist, Deraime was subsequently offered a major-label recording contract with RCA and released a series of albums throughout the first half the 1980s: Plus la Peine de Frimer (1980), Qu'est Ce Que Tu Vas Faire? (1981), Entre Deux Eaux (1982), Live à l'Olympia (1983), Fauteuil Piégé (1984), and Energie Positive (1985). While he experienced some commercial success during the early '80s, scoring a couple hits ("Faut Que J'me Tire Ailleurs," "Babylone Tu Deconne") and playing L'Olympia in Paris, Deraime grew weary of the commercial pressures of the music industry and dropped out for a while during the latter half of the decade.
Deraime resumed his recording career thereafter, and though his output was sometimes sporadic, he released a long line of albums well into the new millennium.

Je me sens devenu bossu
Il n'y a plus rien qui me branche

Some days you just feel down,
like a veil in the air that turns everything grey.
Some days hours should go by quicker.
This afternoon I'm in for claustrophobia.
Still three hours to go
in this office that gets up my nose big time.

(chorus)
I gotta bail out of here1
I gotta bail out of here
Ain't no life being locked up all day
I gotta bail out of here
I gotta bail out of here
In a proper plane, not a paper one

Of course tonight I'll dine and wine my babe
We'll go to the flicks like always
and see some unusual stuff.
At least quirky stuff takes your mind off things.
But soon as the movie's over
we crash back down to reality.

(chorus)

Some days I just wonder
whether life is worth living.
Some days are just too long
and seriously piss you off.
The daily strife weighs upon me,
feels like I'm becoming a hunchback.
I no longer fancy anything much,
it's all getting up my nerves, my nose and my ass.

(chorus)

Still I shouldn't be complaining too much,
I'm no longer alone in this lousy world.
Truth is, it's all good with my babe,
surely our love will last a lifetime.
That's one thing settled, but still
sometimes I feel I'm getting old.

We gotta bail out of here
We gotta bail out of here
Ain't no life being locked up all day
We gotta bail out of here
We gotta bail out of here
In a proper plane, not a paper one

Voyou - Seul sur ton tandem - 2018
Chanson, pop

Album: Les bruits de la ville (RYM: 2.73/5)

Infoconcert.com
There is Jacques Tati in his sweet madness and this body a little too big, not always adapted to the world, but which soaks it up to take flight and twirl around on stage with ease.

Taking a mischievous look at the vicissitudes of his time, Voyou puts compassion and friendship at the heart of his music. With simple, poetic words and a complete absence of cynicism, he tells us stories of today. Stories of love and boredom, from elsewhere and from here.

"And drive on, drive on so that nothing ever stops you..." that's all we wish for Voyou and his luminous and benevolent music, for it already resounds like reassuring evidence.

And if the truth comes out of the mouths of children, it comes out of the mouths of thugs."

Voyov, whose real name is Thibaud Vanhooland, released his first EP "On s'emmène avec toi" on January 10th. Previously a bass player with Pégase, Elephanz and Rhum for Pauline, Voyov has decided to go solo.

Psychedelic Pop

Tiffanie is a French singer of the 1970s with a strong psychedelic character who will make 7 singles during these years, among which in 1973 with POLYDOR "tout, tout, tout...", the following year it will be "des ombres au soleil" with the contribution of cina traendco and daniel faure, with the other title "hey! na na".

In the same year she became famous on the WEA label with the singles "red balloon, blue balloon" and "le film des jours heureux", in 1975 she joined the DISQUES 23 for this other singles including "moi, j'aime les films d'amour" and "la vie c'est un jardin", we find her again in 1976 for a Canadian draw at VIP for the singles "l'amour d'aimer" and also "et ce soir tu téléphones".

The school opened its door widely
"Freedom" was our cries of children
And we were going to draw while running
Two shadows in the sunlight

We were no longer eight or ten years old
We crossed the gardens and the streets
All out of breath still to be lost
Our shadows in the sunshine

And then time has passed
You went to university
I was left alone and you left me
Your shadow in the sunshine 1

I have TV, the world outside
I have my house, my records, my flowers
But I prefer to do it for hours
Shadows in the sunshine 2

Mom often at night
Distract me by inviting boys
'Cause I'm sad, I'm no longer said to be
A shadow in the sunshine

I love the bird in the blue and white sky
Sunflowers that dance in the wind
Everything that lives and does at the same time
Shadows in the sunshine

But since everything has to end
The day will come, yes the morning will come
That's when I will see at the bend of the path
Your shadow in the sunshine

But I know that one day you will come back
And I will run and throw myself into your arms
To draw like in the old days
Two shadows in the sunshine

1.She is abandonned with memories
2.The singer wants to reminisce the monent they were running under the sun

J'suis las (j'suis las)
Je ne sais plus quoi te dire
J'suis mort (j'suis mort)
T'as tout fait pour me détruire
Tu le sais bien (tu le sais bien)
T'as tout fait pour m'endormir
J'suis mort (j'suis mort)

J'suis mort (j'suis mort)
T'as tout fait pour me détruire
Le SRAS (le SRAS)
Ça m'empêche de respirer

Comme toi (comme toi)
A l'envers t'as déjà tout fait
T'as tout fait pour me détruire et

A l'envers, à l'envers je m'en tape encore
Tu es lasse enfant de salope
Si je sais, si je sais que je dois m'en aller
Tu m'entends putain de ta mère
A l'envers, à l'envers je m'en tape encore
Tu es lasse enfant de poufiasse
Si je sais, si je sais que je dois m'en aller
Tu m'entends enfant de salope

Je suis venu te dire
Ce qui me fait souffrir
Au fond de ma pensée
A l'envers s'il vous plait
Le fond de ma pensée

A l'envers s'il vous plait
Le fond de ma pensée

Encore, encore, encore...
A l'envers, a l'envers...

Patrick Juvet - Où sont les femmes ? - 1977
Disco

Wikipédia:

Patrick Juvet (born 21 August 1950)[1] is a former model turned singer-songwriter, who had a string of hit records in France. While his early career was focused on making pop records, he found international success as a disco music performer in the latter half of the 1970s.

Born in Montreux, Switzerland, Juvet grew up in nearby La Tour-de-Peilz, with his parents, Robert and Janine, his brother Daniel, and his sister Nancy. Juvet's father sold radios and televisions, which sparked an early interest in music for the young Juvet. Juvet began studying piano at age 7; later he developed an interest in the music of The Beatles.

Juvet moved to Paris in 1968 at the age of 18 with little money. A friend encouraged him to become a model in Germany, and Juvet pursued this career in Düsseldorf, Germany, for two years. He returned to Paris in 1970.

In Saint-Tropez he met French music producer Eddie Barclay, who allowed him to record a first single in 1971.[citation needed] He wrote Le Lundi au soleil sung by Claude François.

He represented Switzerland at the Eurovision Song Contest 1973 with "Je vais me marier, Marie," placing at no. 12 in the competition. In 1977, Juvet collaborated with French composer and musician Jean-Michel Jarre on the French-language album, Paris by Night, which featured the hit song, "Où sont les femmes?" In 1978, he worked with noted disco producers Jacques Morali and Henri Belolo, who also produced Village People and The Ritchie Family, among other acts. As a result, Juvet soon experienced international success with the disco tracks, "Got a Feeling" and "I Love America".

The aforementioned "Où sont les femmes?" was re-recorded in English under the title, "Where Is My Woman?", and was featured on Juvet's English-language debut on Casablanca Records in the U.S. Victor Willis, original lead singer of Village People, was the lyricist for the project.

His soundtrack score to David Hamilton's art house film Laura featured disco musicians Marc Chantereau and Slim Pezin of Voyage and Space session bassist Jannick Top. Although the music from Laura was never released on compact disc and was never released in the United States, it nonetheless sold 650,000 copies. Parts of the music were written and produced by the New Zealander Brian Southcombe (now deceased) who was once married to Charlotte Rampling. Southcombe, David Hamilton and another New Zealander "Glenn Holland". Archived from the original on 6 January 2011. (Hamilton's business manager) were at one time actively trying to set up a sequel movie to Laura and are said to have approached Juvet for more music. Pictures from Laura and much other Hamilton art can be seen at the official "David Hamilton". web site.

With the decline of disco in the early 1980s, Juvet returned to the French music scene in 1982 with the album, Rêves immoraux. While selling respectably, the album failed to match Juvet's earlier commercial success. A time of financial and personal decline followed, with Juvet suffering periods of depression and alcoholism and relocating from mainland Europe to London, then to Los Angeles and finally, in the latter half of the 1980s, back to Switzerland.

Juvet returned to Paris in 1991 and to his roots as a singer-songwriter with the album, Solitudes. The disc featured more personal, emotional songs with Juvet being accompanied by French language performers, Françoise Hardy, Luc Plamondon, and Marc Lavoine.

In 2005, Juvet released his autobiography Les bleus au cœur: Souvenirs ("Bruises on My Heart: Memories"), in which he talks about his career and his bisexuality.

English version:
...

They wear a black jacket
They smoke cigars
Sometimes give birth
By chance
And when the evening comes
They run into the void
Towards temporary pleasures
Where are the women?
With their gestures that are full of charm
Tell me when the women, women, women, women, women are
Where are the women?
Who have laughters full of tears
Had they maybe lost their passion, passion, passion, passion, passion
Where are the women?
They no longer speak of love
They wear their hair short
And prefer motorbikes to birds
In their eyes they have
Something robot-like
It even surprises the mirrors
Where are the women?
Whom we kiss and then they faint
Tell me when the women, women, women, women, women are
Where are the women?
Who feel oddly blue
Whom we caress and then they get high, high, high, high
Where are the women?
Where are the women?
Who live on the receiving end of telegrams
Tell me when the women, women, women, women, women are
Where are the women?
So gorgeous and so pale
Whose eyes wander and stroll, stroll, stroll, stroll, stroll
Where are the women?
With their gestures that are full of charm
Tell me when the women, women, women, women, women are
Where are the women?
Who have laughters full of tears
Had they maybe lost their passion, passion, passion, passion, passion
Where are the women?
Where are the women?
Where are the women?...

There is no incest in my cult
No insects, no humiliations to endure2
Our intrinsic look might
unsettle you, but the colors will soon run
all over your eardrums' walls, so hark, hark, ye good people3,
behold the strange contingent4 of those who scream with their teeth
This is the Phonétik Cult, hysterical like the sirens on
Republic square5
that shatter the silence at night in Paris.
No apocalyptic trip, we only give in to poetic tortures
Fetichists in love with the language like the sea
as it swells with the wind and become langorous6 and voracious in changing weather.
Waging war against stupidity, illiteracy
that paralyses and suppresses creative energies.
No epic myth nor book dictating our way of life,
but instead a disc any free thinker can access.

To play the sorcerer's apprentice,
rap, beatbox all day long,
beat fate,
become members
if your life is lacking colors
if your daily life is full of pain
come on in, don't be afraid,

7Hippo8! A polite hippie, funny guy, likes to get high9 in bed
A friend of the beat, equally skilled in bullshit and in sex,
he can handle his madness, a loner, sturdy and proud.
A new member of the Cult, to become one he had to
prove he could keep his cool through many trials!
(he had to) dive into these streams without fright,
to hit on widowed piranhas more frightening than Dr. Fu Manchu10
He had to drink a whole lake11
look for eggs on Easter Island,
close his eyes and raise his head12, with the mischievous hope of being pecked or slapped on the cheek.
Catch jaundice, leprosy, the clap, the plague
and watch Swiss TV movies in Budapest
Doing so he set free primal instincts walled-in within his flesh
without toiling13, sincerely, without self-censorship.
A very competent guy, Sea Horse14 is still alive and makes you drunk as he liberates you in a flash.
He's from now on a member of the Phonétik Cult.
Say thanks for this tale of his rite of passage.

To play the sorcerer's apprentice,
rap, beatbox all day long,
beat fate,
become members
if your life is lacking colors
if your daily life is full of pain
come on in, don't be afraid,

1.not sure about these. Literally it means "dry" and "round", but my yoofspeak is failing me there
2.the French uses the idiomatic metaphor "to swallow grass snakes" (which must be indeed hard to swallow)
3.that's an old-fashioned expression that was used by town criers. It's mostly used ironically now
4.used in the military sense, as "group of people"
5.one of the most famous squares in Paris, with a huge feminine personification of the Republic standing in the middle. It's a traditional gathering place for protests
6.a pun with "langue houleuse" just before
7.the whole verse is full of nonsense, but sounds rather funny in French, with school kid party pranks depicted as epic tales
8.a guy's nickname, maybe a diminutive for "Hippolythe". Appears to be a shortening of "Hippocampe" (sea horse) as he's called that later in the song. Sounds just like Hippo in English (the big fat African beast)
9."pipe" could be, well, a (smoking) pipe, but also a blow job
10.Fantômas is a very popular early 20th century French super villain
11.I suspect some Harry Potter influence there Regular smile
12.lit. "close his eyes in front of the skies"
13.from the idiom "suer sang et eau" (sweating blood and water, i.e. bleeding and crying), meaning to suffer greatly to fulfill a task
14.the same nickname as before, only moderately shortened. Apparently the whole nickname of this young guy is "Hippocampe Fou" (crazy sea horse)

Marie France - Je ne me quitterai jamais - 1982
Pop, rock

LP

Wikipédia:
Marie-France Garcia (born 9 February 1946 in Oran) is a French singer and actress. She is transsexual and a Parisian pop icon of the 1970s.

Marie-France was hired in 1969 by the Alcazar in the Latin Quarter, where she became as famous a celebrity as Marilyn Monroe. She remained one of the celebrities of that music-hall until 1987. She became a member of FHAR (Homosexual Front of Revolutionary Action), alongside Guy Hocquenghem. As a member of FHAR, she was interviewed in the magazine "Recherches" (special issue "Trois milliards de pervers" (3 billion perverts), 1973). She was a member of a small group, the Gazolines, with Hélène Hazera. The two performed in "Les Intrigues de Sylvia Couski" by Adolfo Arrieta (1974). Alain Z. Kan paid tribute to her by naming one of his songs "Marie-France" in 1976.

Marie-France was a transsexual, a word that she disliked, maybe because certain television hosts automatically questioned it. "When one has passed onto the other side, why do they keep this title?" she regrets.

She appeared as a singer in Barocco by Andre Techine in 1976, where she produced «On se voit se voir», a song written by Philippe Sarde. She pursued her acting career in theater, notably in Le Navire Night by Marguerite Duras in 1979. With the album 39 de Fièvre (39 °C Fever) in 1980, through several renditions of sixties pop (Gillian Hils, Johnny Hallyday, Sylvie Vartan, Rocky Volcano) and written Jean-William Thoury originals and composed by Dynamite Yan or Vincent Palmer, she captured the style of the rock group Bijou. She reappeared in the film Les Innocents ("The Innocents"), directed by Téchiné in 1987. In 1993, she recorded a revival of Édith Piaf, in a duet with Marc Almond, who rendered two songs to her. Daniel Darc and Mirwais collaborated on her eponymous 1997 album, for which she wrote the lyrics of a few songs herself. Dave then invited her on his album Doux tam tam in 2003. Frédéric Botton wrote several songs for her in 2005. At the end of 2006, Léonard Lasry invited Marie-France to sing a duet entitled "Du désir au bout des doigts" ("Desire at the Fingertips") as an homage. This song is featured on the first Léonard Lasry album, Des Illusions ("Illusions") (29 Music).

Marie-France also published a duet with Hélèna Noguerra on her last album called "Fraise Vanille" (“Strawberry Vanilla”) (released in October 2007). In 2008, Marie France recorded a rock'n'roll garage album entirely written by Jacques Duvall and composed by Miam Monster Miam. The album is called Phantom feat. Marie France and reminds her fans of the rock'n'roll Marie France of the 1980s.

Jamais, jamais…
Ad lib.

Serge Gainsbourg - L'eau à la bouche - 1959
Chanson à texte, Soundtracks, Chachachá, Lounge, Cool Jazz

EP: L'eau à la bouche (RYM: 3.77/5)

Wikipédia:
Serge Gainsbourg (French pronunciation: [sɛʁʒ ɡɛ̃sbuʁ]; born Lucien Ginsburg; 2 April 1928 – 2 March 1991) was a French singer, songwriter, pianist, film composer, poet, painter, screenwriter, writer, actor and director. Regarded as the most important figure in French pop whilst alive, he was renowned for often provocative and scandalous releases which caused uproar in France, dividing his public opinion; as well as his diverse artistic output, which ranged from his early work in jazz, chanson, and yé-yé to later efforts in rock, funk, reggae, and electronica. Gainsbourg's varied musical style and individuality make him difficult to categorize, although his legacy has been firmly established and he is often regarded as one of the world's most influential popular musicians.

His lyrical works incorporated wordplay, with humorous, bizarre, provocative, sexual, satirical or subversive overtones, including sophisticated rhymes, mondegreen, onomatopoeia, spoonerism, dysphemism, paraprosdokian and pun. Gainsbourg wrote over 550 songs, which have been covered more than 1,000 times by a range of artists. Since his death from a second heart attack in 1991, Gainsbourg's music has reached legendary stature in France, and he is regarded as France's greatest ever musician and one of the country's most popular and endeared public figures. He has also gained a cult following in the English-speaking world with chart success in the United Kingdom and the United States (something no other Francophone artist has managed) with "Je t'aime... moi non plus" and "Bonnie and Clyde", respectively.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serge_Gainsbourg

The song:
L'Eau à la bouche is a song written, performed by Serge Gainsbourg and composed by Gainsbourg and Alain Goraguer for Jacques Doniol-Valcroze's eponymous film. Recorded at the end of 1959, L'Eau à la bouche was released as a four-track single on January 27th 1960, seven days after the release of the film.

The single proved to be a big hit, the first for Gainsbourg, selling 100,000 copies, fifty times more than his previous four EPs.

The song was covered in 2020 by Allan Vermeer.

Quand me vient l'eau à la bouche

Quand me vient l'eau à la bouche

Quand me vient l'eau à la bouche

Listen to my voice, listen to my prayer
Listen to my beating heart, let yourself go
I beg you don't be shy
When my mouth waters

I want you trusting I sense you're captive
I want you docile I sense you're fearful
I beg you don't be shy
When my mouth waters

Let yourself go on the current
Carried in the bed of the torrent
And in mine
If you want to
Let's quit the shore
Let's set ourselves adrift

I will take you gently and without restraint
What are you afraid of, now then don't be scared
I beg you don't be shy
When my mouth waters

Tonight you'll come close to me to stretch out yourself
Yes I will be calm, I'll know how to wait for you
And so that you don't become shy
See I only take your mouth

Air - Playground Love - The Virgin Suicides OSt - Soundtrack - 2000
Ambient Pop, Film Score, Downtempo

Album : The Virgin Suicides OST (RYM: 3.56/5)

Wikipédia:
Air are a French music duo from Versailles, consisting of Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel.

Air's critically acclaimed debut album, Moon Safari, including the track "Sexy Boy," was an international success in 1998. Its follow-up, The Virgin Suicides, was the score to Sofia Coppola's first movie of the same name. The band has since released the albums 10 000 Hz Legend, Talkie Walkie, Pocket Symphony, Love 2, Le voyage dans la lune and Music for Museum.

Formation
Nicolas Godin studied architecture at the École nationale supérieure d'architecture de Versailles, and Jean-Benoît Dunckel studied mathematics, before forming a band in 1995. Before founding Air (erroneously considered as an acronym of Amour, Imagination, Rêve, which translates to Love, Imagination, Dream), Dunckel and Godin played together in the band Orange with others such as Alex Gopher, Xavier Jamaux and Jean de Reydellet. The former two subsequently contributed to remixes of tracks recorded by Air.

Initially, Godin worked alone, recording a demo with members of Funkadelic as his backing band before releasing his first entirely solo effort, "Modular Mix", which featured production by Étienne de Crécy.

Career
After making several remixes for other acts in the first half of the 1990s, Air recorded its first EP, Premiers Symptômes, in 1995. The band released its first album, Moon Safari, in 1998. The first single, "Sexy Boy", was heavily played on alternative radio stations. The album received universal acclaim and became an international success. In 2000, Air composed the score The Virgin Suicides to Sofia Coppola's debut film of the same name, and the score to Georges Méliès' Le Voyage Dans La Lune. In the 2000s, Dunckel & Godin released four studio albums, including 10 000 Hz Legend (2001), Talkie Walkie (2004), Pocket Symphony (2007), and Love 2 (2009).

Other works
Air has often collaborated with Coppola. Air drummer and former Redd Kross member Brian Reitzell put together the soundtrack to 2003's Lost in Translation, including one original contribution by Air titled "Alone in Kyoto". The soundtrack for Coppola's October 2006 film Marie Antoinette featured a track by Air ("Il Secondo Giorno"). Air wrote and played the music of the album 5:55 by Anglo-French actress and singer Charlotte Gainsbourg, which was released in August 2006. Air has recorded a DJ mix album, Late Night Tales: Air, for Azuli Records' Late Night Tales series. The release was initially scheduled for October 2005, but was delayed several times. It finally was released, complete with a new sleeve design, in September 2006. Darkel, a solo album by Dunckel, was released that same year.

City Reading (Tre Storie Western) (2003) started as an idea for a collaboration with contemporary Italian writer Alessandro Baricco, known for his unusual characterizations and lyrical, poetic style. Baricco contacted Air in summer 2002 with the idea to marry narration of texts from his book City with live original musical accompaniment. The performance premiered live in November 2002 at Rome's Teatro Valle, and was deemed such a success that both parties resolved to make a full studio recording that resulted in the album.

Influences and musical style
Air is associated with a variety of musical styles: electronica, space pop, dream pop, progressive rock, downtempo, chillout, trip hop, ambient, electronic pop, and space rock.

Dunckel grew up listening to both classical music and electronic music, especially Kraftwerk. Next, he took an interest in what he called the "English dark rock" of Siouxsie and the Banshees and Joy Division, while being a fan of David Bowie, Iggy Pop and Lou Reed. Brian Eno and Cluster were two of the electronic acts who inspired him the most. He cited among his favorite artists: Maurice Ravel for classical music, François de Roubaix for music soundtracks and Siouxsie and the Banshees for pop music. Dunckel shared with Godin a special liking for the music of Michel Legrand, Philip Glass and Grace Jones. During his childhood, Godin was fascinated by the Beatles before later discovering the soul of Sly and the Family Stone. The duo were influenced by progressive rock pioneers Pink Floyd.

Air uses many of its studio instruments (like Moog synthesizers, the Korg MS-20, Wurlitzer and Vocoder) on stage, where their ability to improvise is more clearly highlighted. The band performs the well-known tracks from the albums live as extended or altered versions. Air often collaborates (both in the studio and live), with artists like Beth Hirsch (Moon Safari), Françoise Hardy ("Jeanne"), Jean-Jacques Perrey ("Cosmic Bird"), Gordon Tracks ("Playground Love" and "Easy Going Woman" – Gordon Tracks is a pseudonym of the French singer Thomas Mars from Phoenix), Beck (10 000 Hz Legend), Jean-Michel Jarre ('Close Your Eyes' from Jarre's Electronica 1: The Time Machine), as well as on the 2004 tour with Dave Palmer and on the 2007 tour with drummer Earl Harvin, Vincent Taurelle and Steve Jones.

Lys Gauty - Les petits pavés - 1940
Chanson.

Wikipédia:
Lys Gauty (born Alice Bonnefoux Gauthier 2 February 1900 – 2 January 1994) was a French cabaret singer and actress. Her most significant work came in the 1930s and 1940s as Gauty appeared in film, and recorded her best-known song, "Le Chaland Qui Passe", which is an interpretation of an Italian composition.

Born in Levallois-Perret, France, Gauty was the daughter of a mechanic and seamstress. Aspiring to be an opera singer, she worked as a shop-girl at a tailor store called the Galeries Lafayette, saving some of her earnings, and portions donated to her by Gauty's parents to receive a classical music education at Nelson Fyscher in Paris. In 1922, Gauty began her musical career as a cabaret singer at variety shows arranged by operetta composer Georges Van Parys, who accompanied her on piano. She married her booking agent, Swiss music director Gaston Groeuer, who had taken over ownership of the Theatre des Dix Heures in Brussels, Belgium. At the music hall, Gauty commenced her successful stretch in Parisian music halls, intermittently performing at the Theatre des Dix Heures for 12 years.

She became a celebrated figure in music halls such as the Olympia, the Empire, the Alcazar, and the ABC. Gauty began recording in 1927, creating her most popular recorded performance in the same year—a French rendition of the Italian love-song, Parla mi d'amore Mario, re-titled Le Chaland Qui Passe. Beginning in 1930, Gauty started to dabble in cinema soundtracks, singing for Maurice Gleize's Wedding Day. Another notable recording was made into the theme song for René Clair's film Quatorze Juliet in 1933. Le Chaland Qui Passe was also introduced into the 1934 film L'Atalante when it was renamed after the song in an attempt to become more popular among the public.

Gauty was awarded a Grande Prix du Disque for her role in the French adaptation of German composer Kurt Weill's The Threepenny Opera. In addition, Weill supplied her with another of her popular songs, "La Complainte de la Seine". When a period of rampant anti-semitism had spread across France in the mid-1930s, Gauty was one of the few artists to show her support for the Jewish people by singing the composition "Israel-va-ten". In 1940, following a tour in South America, Gauty returned to France, which had been conquered by Nazi Germany. Under threat of deportation and questioned about her Jewish husband, she, like several other French musicians, agreed to perform in Germany throughout the Second World War. Before the war's conclusion, Gauty had escaped to Monaco where she performed with pianist Léo Ferré, who also composed songs for her.

Upon her return to France, Gauty only briefly continued her music career. Considered as a "collaborator" in the Nazi regime, she was targeted by members of the French Resistance, and survived an assassination attempt. In her later years, Gauty owned a casino in Luchon and became a singing teacher. She died on 2 January 1994 in Cap d'Ail. Her songs have been reissued on compilation albums throughout the years, including Le Chaland Qui Passe and Lys Gauty: Succès et Raretés.

Las de t'attendre dans la rue
J'ai lancé deux petits pavés
Sur tes carreaux que j'ai crevés
Et tu ne m'es pas apparue.
Tu te moques de tout, je crois (x2)
Demain je t'en lancerai trois.

Par devant ta porte cochère
Pour faire tomber tes amis
Trois et quatre pavés j'ai mis.
J'exècre tes amis, ma chère.
Demain je recommencerai (x2)
Et tes amants je les tuerai.

Si tu ne changes pas d'allure
J'écraserai tes yeux, ton front

Entre deux pavés qui feront
A ton crâne quelques fêlures.
Je t'aime, je t'aime bien pourtant (x2)
Mais tu m'en as fait tant et tant.

Les gendarmes en cavalcade
Me poursuivront après ce coup
Pour m'attacher la corde au cou.
Je me bâtis ma barricade
Et sur les pavés je mettrai (x2)
Mon cœur durci par le regret.

Autant de pavés par le monde
De grands et de petits pavés
Autant de chagrins encavés
En ma pauvre âme vagabonde.
Je meurs, je meurs de tout cela (x2)
Et ma chanson s'arrête là.

Tired of waiting for you in the street,
I threw a couple of cobblestones
into your windows and broke them,
still you did not appear to me.

You don't care about anything, I think.
You don't care about anything, I think.
Tomorrow I will throw three stones.

In front of your front door,
to make your friends trip,
I laid three or four cobblestones.
I loathe your friends, my dear.

Tomorrow I'll do it again.
Tomorrow I'll do it again,
and I will kill all our lovers.

If you don't change your gait,
I will squash your eyes, your forehead
between two cobblestones that will
somewhat crack your skull.

I love, I like you though
I love, I like you though,
but you put me through so much.

A host of policemen
will chase me after this deed
to put a rope around my neck.
I'm building a barricade.

And on the cobblestones I'll lay
And on the cobblestones I'll lay
down my regret-hardened heart.

There are as many cobblestones
of all sizes in the world
as there are sorrows burried
inside my wretched wandering soul.

All this, all this is killing me.
All this, all this is killing me,
and that's where my song ends.

Les Stagiaires - Charles-Hubert - 1984
Garage rock

Album: Numéro...

rockmadeinfrance.com (DeepL translate)
Valstar Lovers for one year, the Trainees symbolize these "ST" groups that flourished in Bordeaux in the 80s: Les Standards, Les Stilettos, Stalag, Strychnine, Stillers, etc.. What's the difference? Here we are dealing with a group of business school students, Sud de Co Bordeaux to be precise. The seriousness of the company is therefore not in order and their reputation as dilettantes quickly precedes them. But their know-how in marketing and other communication techniques is not to be demonstrated, so much so that they end up, in spite of themselves, giving nearly 400 concerts and recording a single in 1982 and then an album in 1984 under the guidance of Jacno's producer. Jacno's album was sold with a concert ticket and over 500 copies of the album were sold in exchange for a sesame ticket. The album was made without one of the two historical members of the group, Luc Soubielle, who left Les Stagiaires in 1982.
