Michel Polnareff - Le bal des Laze - 1968
French Pop, Chanson, Baroque Pop, Singer/Songwriter, Folk Rock, Pop Rock

Album : Le bal des Laze (RYM: 3.75/5)

Artist Biography by Gregory McIntosh (Allmusic)
Known for his eccentric nature, French pop songwriter Michel Polnareff created a buzz for himself in the early to mid-'60s when his debut single, "La Poupée Qui Fait Non," rocketed to the top of the French charts, but it was his early-'70s release, Polnareff's, that cemented him a place as a legend in French pop. Polnareff was raised in Paris somewhat as a child of the arts, his mother, Simone Lane, being a dancer and his father, Leib Polnareff, a musician who played sideman to many, including Edith Piaf under the name Léo Poll. The two surrounded young Polnareff with music, shaping his ambitions, so it is no surprise that he had learned piano by only five years of age and was writing music by the age of 11.
After a short stint in the French Army and a few menial jobs, Polnareff embraced his passions and busked the city streets with his guitar to moderate success. In 1965, he refused a recording contract with Barclay, a prize that he won in a songwriting contest, in one of his earliest displays of his now-famous aversion to conformity, but eventually signed to AZ under the direction of his new manager and Radio 1 musical director, Lucien Morisse. "La Poupée Qui Fait Non" was released in the summer of 1966 and rocketed him up the charts not only in France, but in Germany, Britain, and Spain. The song was the first of a string of hits for Polnareff, but before long, the French press focused almost entirely on his garish stage presence. Being under the scrutiny of the conservative press didn't seem to stop the hits, however, and Polnareff garnered praise from celebrities such as Charles Trenet, but the consistency of attacks began to weigh heavily on him.

By 1970, his stage costumes had become more flamboyant. The French press began questioning his sexuality, and the constant controversy around the singer came to a head when he was physically assaulted while performing. Not surprisingly, Polnareff canceled the rest of his tour, and shortly after checked into a hospital for depression when he learned that Morisse, his manager, had committed suicide. After five months of treatment, Polnareff bounced back and resumed his hectic recording and touring schedule, but scandal soon followed when he ended up in court due to a campaign for his 1972 tour that was centered around publicity posters bearing Polnareff's naked behind. Polnareff was found guilty of gross indecency and charged 60,000 francs.

The touring continued through mid-1973 with stops in Polynesia and North America, but upon his return to France, Polnareff found his bank account had been drained by his financial advisor. Polnareff's debt to the French government was over one million francs in unpaid taxes, and with little money in his name, he fled from France to the United States. Unknown in a new country, Polnareff was safely out of the limelight and the reach of the French authorities. He spent more than a decade in the United States before he cleared up his monetary issues with the French government, while in the meantime he recorded for Atlantic and composed movie scores.

Despite his absence from France, Polnareff's new music remained present in French popular culture and continued to chart through the mid-'80s, until he removed himself entirely from the public eye and quietly returned to France to work on a new album. Kama Sutra finally appeared in the summer of 1990, and the album garnered three French hits. Polnareff remained in France for five more years before returning to the U.S. to perform at the Roxy in Los Angeles. Through the '90s and into the 2000s, he continued to release new material and play occasional shows while residing in the United States.
Lyrics :

Je serai pendu demain matin
Ma vie n´était pas faite
Pour les châteaux.
Tout est arrivé ce soir de juin
On donnait une fête
Dans le château.

Dans le château de Laze
Le plus grand bal de Londres
Lord et Lady de Laze
Recevaient le grand monde
Diamants, rubis, topazes

Sera pour qu´on me plaigne
Puisqu´on va lui donner
Un autre fiancé
Et que je n´ pourrai pas
Supprimer celui-là

English:

I'll be hanged tomorrow morning
My life was not made
For castles.
Everything happened tonight June
They gave a party
In the castle.

Laze in the castle
The largest ballroom in London
Lord and Lady Laze
Received the great world
Diamonds, rubies, topazes
And white robes
Hidden in the garden
I clenched my fists
I watched dance
Jane and her fiancé.

I'll be hanged tomorrow day
Too bad for the girl
Of this castle.
Because I think she liked the love
That one was quiet
Far from the castle.

Laze in the castle
For twenty years Jane
Lord and Lady Laze
Received the Queen
Me crazy that we fathom
I hate dying of
Hidden in the garden
I clenched my fists
I watched dance
Jane and her fiancé.

I'll be hanged tomorrow morning
That will be four lines
In newspapers.
I'm just a vulgar assassin
An unworthy vagabond
Of this castle.

Laze in the castle
Maybe Jane
At a time when it crushes me
Will have little trouble
But my last sentence
Will complain to me that
Since we will give
Another fiancé
And that I 'could not

You know, Romain, I was thinking the same thing after the AM Artists Poll, but trying to imagine a game, where we challenge a list of artists to find the top French, Austrian, Swiss, etc. artist.

Well, bravo, for exploring the artists of France in more depth. Perhaps when you're done I'll look after Canada.

If anyone wants to ride the frontier of regional music, I've held on to a local paper that once listed the 100 greatest rock acts in the history of the greater Phoenix area, which I could list off in piecemeal fashion. I couldn't even name 100 acts here, good or bad, but I admired those guys' resolve...

Les Rita Mitsouko - Les Amants - 1991
French Pop, Pop Rock, Synthpop,

Album : Système D (RYM: 3.44/5)

Artist Biography by Bradley Torreano (AllMusic)
Les Rita Mitsouko came together in the spring of 1979 when guitarist Fred Chichin and singer Catherine Ringer began working on the same theater production. Upon their first meeting, they were inseparable, talking until they realized they should start the band together. Ringer decided to take on lyrical duties, while Chichin became the resident instrumentalist. They debuted later that year, with Ringer on the organ and Chichin on guitar, while everything else was prerecorded. Around this time they also drafted Jean Naplin into the mix, although he was never a member; he contributed songs to most of their albums and became a frequent collaborator. They realized early that the chemistry they had developed did not translate well to other musicians, thus they decided to keep the group a duo. They performed around Europe, playing several clubs and bars until finally playing under the name les Rita Mitsouko for the first time in November of 1980.

They were a very popular live act at the time, and they collaborated with other artists often, most notably with playwright Armando Llamas before his death in 1981. The band signed to Virgin Records in 1982, giving them their first opportunity to release a single. "Minuit Dansant" was the song, and critics immediately branded the band minimalists. The B-side of the record, "Don't Forget the Nite," became a surprise radio hit and was re-released as the A-side soon after. They moved to Cologne and began recording their eponymous debut album, and by the end of 1984 the album was out and "La Jalousie" and "Marcia Baila" became big hits in Europe. Ensuing tours with the Smiths and Kid Creole revealed their growing popularity, and by 1986 they were ready to record their second album. Filmmaker Jean-Luc Goddard filmed the process, resulting in the oddball documentary Soigne Ta Droite, which is of interest chiefly because of the unreleased material that appears on the soundtrack. Producer Tony Visconti was brought in, and the recording process was moved to England to finish the project. The No Comprendo was finally released at the end of the year to a big reception, making them one of the hottest bands in Europe and winning them many music awards. The band moved to New York in early 1987 to hold auditions for a live band. The following tour, which covered most of Europe, was an enormous success and led to the eventual re-launching of La Cigale, an old theater that the band enjoyed. During the tour they also made friends with Sparks, who invited them to collaborate at some point in the future. Musicians like Boy George and Michael Hutchence voiced their interest in working with the group, but these projects failed to go anywhere and the band just moved ahead to the next album. Marc et Robert was the next album, written mostly in the studio, and featuring songs written and performed with Sparks. Another tour followed, leading to the construction of the band's new studio in their home.

By 1990, they decided to release a remix album (Re) and perform a month-long engagement at La Cigale. The performances were so successful that the two agreed to prolong the appearance, staying until January of 1991. It was then that they realized that they wanted to record their albums on-stage at La Cigale, leading to the construction of an elaborate recording setup in the theater. They began work on the album in 1992, eventually releasing Systeme D in November of 1993. More hits appeared, including a duet with Iggy Pop on "My Love Is Bad." Another European tour resulted from the release, and they worked with several other musicians during their trips, including Coba and Richard Galliano. A live album was released next, Acoustiques, which sparked another tour through Eastern Europe. Their records were properly released to America in 1999, and following a quiet period they reappeared in 2000 with the Cool Frenesie album. They released their sixth studio album, La Femme Trombone in 2002 and a live album entitled En Concert avec l'Orchestre Lamoureux in 2004. In 2007, the duo released what would unfortunately be their last album together. After the release of the seventh studio album, Variety, Chichin died from cancer. Ringer continued under her own name and released the live album Chante Les Rita Mitsouko and more a la Cigalle in 2008.
Si Mrs mouillait
Dans la nuit
En rêvant de son homme
Alors elle s'enroulait
Dans les draps
Délestée de son sommeil.
Dans les heures pales du matin
Elle espérait ses formes
Comme il était allé pêcher
Sur la mer...

Les amants le font de coeur
Parce que l'union fait la force
Et leurs traits s'unifieront
Jusqu'à se ressembler.

Pour le pire et le meilleur
Jusqu'à y crever leurs forces
Ils marchent sans sourciller
D'un pas irrégulier

Monsieur se glissait
Dans la nuit
Pour aller chercher des hommes
Des types langoureux
Sur le port où les marins fument
Et dégorgent leur amour...

Les amants le font de coeur
Parce que l'union fait la force
Et leurs traits s'unifieront
Jusqu'` se ressembler
Pour le pire et le meilleur
Jusqu'à y crever leurs forces
Ils marchent sans sourciller
D'un pas irrégulier

Thank you. I hope to continue this thread a long time so if you want to begining now for Canada, be free.

But I don't want to put here the top of the top of the French songs, just to put songs not well know outside the country I think.

Taxi Girl - Cherchez le garçon - 1980
Synthpop/New Wave

EP: Taxi Girl (RYM:4.05/5)

Album : Chercher le Garçon

Artist Biography by Olivier Duboc (AllMusic)
Taxi Girl was formed in Paris in the late '70s around Daniel Darc (vocals), Mirwais (guitar), Laurent Sinclair (keyboards), Stéphane Erard (bass), and Pierre Wolfsohn (drums). The band played directly alongside such legendary acts as Marquis de Sade in the French '80s cult bands club. Mainly influenced by literature and American pop music, the band came up with a Mishima meets the Stooges meets Kraftwerk meets Jim Morrison formula, becoming famous thanks to a couple of handful of singles ("Mannequin," "Cherchez le Garçon," "Paris," "Aussi Belle Qu'une Balle") and shocking live sets. Their manager, Alexis, built a whole legend around Darc and his crew, especially after Darc cut his own wrists on-stage when opening for Talking Heads. Their first album, Seppuku, produced by the Stranglers' Jean-Jacques Burnel and recorded with the help of drummer Jet Black (also of the Stranglers) showcased a fully grown romantic new wave band at the height of their powers. But drummer Pierre Wolfsohn's death by drug overdose precipitated the band's end, though the Darc-Mirwais core kept on recording a handful of singles and mini-LPs before both going solo. Darc had a slowly but amazingly growing career, and Mirwais when on successfully in the production field to the point where he got to produce Madonna albums in the 2000s. His newfound popularity, coupled to his Production album and Darc's acclaimed Crève Coeur, contributed to the increasing amount of bands claiming their influence in the mid-2000s new wave/post-punk revival scene.
Lyrics :
D'une bande magnétique,
Un soupir lui échappe.
Sur un écran géant,
Ses yeux se ferment.

Cherchez le garçon,
Trouvez son nom,
Cherchez le garçon.

Réveil tragique succède,
A un sommeil sans rêve.
La forme de son corps,
Ne veut rien dire pour moi.

Cherchez le garçon,
Trouvez son nom,
Cherchez le garçon.

D'une bande magnétique,
Un soupir lui échappe.
Sur un écran géant,
Une goutte de sang.

Cherchez le garçon,
Trouvez son nom,
Cherchez le garçon.

English :
On a magnetic tape,
A sigh escapes him.
On a giant screen
His eyes are closed.

Look for the boy,
Find its name,
Look for the boy.

Wake tragic succeeds,
A dreamless sleep.
The shape of her body,
Means nothing to me.

Look for the boy,
Find its name,
Look for the boy.

On a magnetic tape,
A sigh escapes him.
On a giant screen
A drop of blood.

Look for the boy,
Find its name,
Look for the boy.

Brigitte Fontaine et Noir Désir - Bis Baby Boum Boum - 2001

Album : Kékéland (RYM: 3.51/5)

Artist Biography by Richie Unterberger (AllMusic)
French singer Brigitte Fontaine made a series of increasingly strange and eclectic art-pop in the 1970s that gathered a lot of acclaim in France, although she remains obscure to an international audience. Initially she was an eccentric but accessible pop singer, presenting melodic and orchestrated material a la a more daring version of late-'60s/early-'70s Francoise Hardy. On her first album, she worked with arranger Jean Claude Vannier, who had also done arrangements for Serge Gainsbourg. On subsequent records she got jazzier, and then into more difficult directions of avant-gardism and art song. Her albums were commendably wide-ranging, and undeniably erratic. She could employ African tribal rhythms, discordant progressive jazz, pretty folky melodies, throat-stretching a cappella vocals, spoken poetry, and pious classical arrangements, sometimes with a stoned recklessness. On some albums she collaborated with the less impressive male writer and singer Areski, whose rough vocals contrasted incongruously with Fontaine's sweet and mature tone. Fontaine returned to recording in the 1990s, around the time her vintage work slowly began to accumulate a cult following among English-speaking listeners.

Baby Boum Boum
Baby Boum Boum
Baby Boum Boum

From Baltimore to Bab El Ued
I went bellowing in the balls
with a weathered bipede
who had no boner for knocking about.

In this hype band bipolary
To the point of tumbling stepmothers
I went bonking the fog
With a bazaar drum

I went dribbling for the babas
And the blondy-curled munchers
wee bubbles of baraka
and sweeties for the James Bond

Baby Boom Boom you've gotta have a break
I dam grassed off with these greenhorns
Who bone only for the bazooka
for the brawl and the bustle
Baby Boom Boom
Baby Boom Boom
Baby Boom Boom

They dig heels keys up on the punch-up
Of Blue Beards barded with bronze
Of cow-boys stuffed with concrete
Of bogus zombies and bonzes

Who 'nload on'em such a blanquette
tha' can squash the benches
blow your ballies
have you scram away from the compass

While I burn the icy floe
Poaching happiness aimlessly
And bathing out in the four windies
with Beelzebub's billy goats

Baby Boom Boom you've gotta have a break
I dam grassed off with these greenhorns
Who bone only for the bazooka
for the brawl and the bustle
Baby Boom Boom
Baby Boom Boom
Baby Boom Boom

Brassed eff cropping concrete
'n' nuttyin' 'n a banger
Brassed eff wanking off mist
'n' churning thickies

While the fogeys of the bizness
Who beat us with basenesses
Babybottle Bourbons in their buick
I slog for ball's skin and goaty poo

I'll go grind all these butchers
Who get their windbag go brown
in the Bahamas with my dough
While I flip out in the bundles

Baby Boom Boom you've gotta have a break
I dam grassed off with these greenhorns
Who bone only for the bazooka
for the brawl and the bustle
Baby Boom Boom
Baby Boom Boom
Baby Boom Boom

Commentaires de l'auteur(e) :
Oh my this is a very enjoyable and very difficult to translate one. It is full of familiar or argotic vocabulary, but also of deformations or frank neologisms deviced by Brigitte Fontaine. Even in French the meaning of some words is not easily understandable. I'll do what I can !
Burlingue : I can't find this word in French. I assume it must be a deformation of the noun "bourlingue". The verb of the same family, "bourlinguer", means "voyager". So I translated by "knocking about [a lot]".
Bander = familiar/vulgar for "to have an erection" = to have a boner.
"Broutard" is a neologism, a noun derived from the verb "brouter" (to graze, to munch), probably with sexual innuendo here.
"Des p'tit' bull's" = oral spelling for "de petites bulles" = "wee bubbles".
"Ras-le-boc" : expression fusioning "ras-le-bol" (to be brassed off something) and "boc", which means nothing but, in French, sounds like "bock" (beear glass) and close to "bec" (beak).
"Blanc-bec" = novice, greenhorn.
"i's'braquent à bloc" = oral spelling for "ils se braquent à bloc", "ils se formalisent à fond". "se braquer" = to dig your heels in. "à fond" = "a lot". I translated by melting two expressions : "to dig your heels in" (for "se braquer") and "keyed up" ("remonté à bloc").
"La baston" = the brawl.
"Bidon" = fake, bogus.
"Roubignolles" = colourful, a bit dated argotic word for "tesicles" (I translated "ballies", deformation of "balls").
"Barjotter" = neologism. Verb derived from the French adjective "barjot", familiar for "mad". I translated with an equivalent : "nuttying", derived from the adjective "nutty".
"Branler" = vulgar verb for "to masturbate someone".
"Baratter" = to churn (butter).
"Branquignollle" = contemporary familiar/vulgar word for "up to no good", "incapable of doing anything properly", "fool", "stupid".
"Barbeaux" = neologism. Maybe derived from "barbon", pejorative noun (dated) meaning "old man" ?
"Bisness" = deformed from English "business".
"Bastonner" = to beat someone with a stick (a bit dated).
"Bassesse" more often used as a singular, here in the plural, meaning "base things", "mesquine acts".
"Biberonner" : French verb meaning "to feed a baby with a baby bottle" (baby bottle = biberon in French).
"Buick" : I have no idea what it means...
"peau de balle" : "ball's skin" (probaly meaning "testicle" here).
"Crotte de bique" (litterally "goat poo"), equivalent of "poo".
"baudruche" = rubber skin, balloon, here meaning the belly of these persons.
"blé" = French familiar word for money = dough.
"baliser" = to flip out, to freak out.
"balluches" = neologism as far as I can tell. Close to the French word "balluchon" = "bundle". I translated by "bundle".

Loving this thread so far :D Maybe I'll do the same thing for Belgium, but that'll probably be in a couple of months, when I have more time.

And since you are the expert here on French music (or French-language music in general), I also want to ask a question, Romain. This artist, is he French or Belgian? It's a cult hit here, but I can't find much information about the guy :(

Music: Carlos d'Alessio /Words: Marguerite Duras

Chanson,
Toi qui ne veux rien dire
Toi qui me parles d'elle
Et toi qui me dis tout
Ô, toi,
Que nous dansions ensemble
Toi qui me parlais d'elle
D'elle qui te chantait
Toi qui me parlais d'elle
De son nom oublié
De son corps, de mon corps
De cet amour là
De cet amour mort
Chanson,
De ma terre lointaine
Toi qui parleras d'elle
Maintenant disparue
Toi qui me parles d'elle
De son corps effacé
De ses nuits, de nos nuits
De ce désir là
De ce désir mort
Chanson,
Toi qui ne veux rien dire
Toi qui me parles d'elle
Et toi qui me dit tout
Et toi qui me dit tout

Song,
You who don't want to say anything
You who speak to me of her
And you who tell me everything
Oh you
That we could dance together
You who speak to me of her
Of she who sang
You who speak to me of her
Of her forgotten name
Of her body, of my body
Of that love, there
Of that dead love

Song
Of my far away country
You who will speak of her
Now disappeared
You who speak to me of her
Of her erased body
Of her nights, of our nights
Of that desire, there
Of that dead desire

Song,
You who don't want to say anything
You who speak to me of her
And you who tell me everything
And you who tell me everything

Allmusic :
French band Pigalle, best known for its hit single "Dans la Sale du Bar-Tabac de la Rue des Martyrs," was one of François Hadji-Lazaro's two alternative outfits in the 80s. Less punk-oriented than its parallel project Les Garçons Bouchers, Pigalle offered a warm mix of pop, rock, and traditional influences. "Hadji-Lazaro" ended Pigalle in the late '90s, after four studio albums (1986's Pigalle, 1990s Regards Affligés Sur la Morne et Pitoyable Existence de BenjaminTrembley, Personage Fâlot Mais ô Combien Attachant, 1993's Rire et Pleurer and 1997's Alors), and one live LP (1992's Pigallive). In 2007, though, a reunion was announced and delivered with the release of a double-CD compilation comprised of major singles, outtakes, and six previously unreleased tracks.

Ensemble

Ici chacun douc´ment oublie l´ombre

Ici chacun douc´ment oublie l´ombre

"A boire!"

Dans la salle du bar tabac de la rue des Martyrs {x3}

In the bar, Martyrs Street
Night girls are waiting for the day, selling pleasure,
Drunkards are opening their heart,
Sliding slowly from the bar to the ground

In the bar, Martyrs Street
The boss got a gun for the naïve who would try to steal the moneybox
In the toilets, words carved on the walls
Talk about giant sex, love and filth, all together

Here, everyone forgets the shadow of a past life, of a women, of rubbles
In this gloomy picture, one is trying to forget a perfume, a voice
One puts out the impact, still burning, of wet and soft half-opened lips

In the bar, Martyrs Street
Some evening, in a corner, they suddenly stop laughing
And when abruptly, the blades get out, everyone leaves,
Throwing themselves on the glass door

In the bar, Martyrs Street
Syringes are greedily emptied into hopeless arms
Here, it is fistful of drug only
Spoons are rarely used for coffee

Here, everyone slowly forgets the shadow of a past life, of a women, of rubbles
In this gloomy picture, one is trying to forget a perfume, a voice
One puts out the impact, still burning, of wet and soft half-opened lips

In the bar, Martyrs Street
Old tattooed guys are everywhere, telling their memories
Sad travelers, with overcoats and suitcases
Bookmakers who collect the stakes at night

In the bar, Martyrs Street
Everything is to buy, everything is for sale, the better and the worst
An old tramp with a smashed face
Comes in and start to yell "A drink!"

In the bar, Martyrs Street...

Nino Ferrer - Le sud - 1974
Chanson

Album: Nino and Radiah (RYM: 3.71/5)

Artist Biography by Quint Kik (All Music)

Self-indulgent chameleon or master of artistic disguise? By all means, Nino Ferrer proved himself to be ever the "homme a tout faire" (jack of all trades) he agitatedly sang about in his theme song to the French television series Agence Interim. Ferrer was a late bloomer of the French yé-yé movement, with a legacy not as widely known as that of Jacques Dutronc or Michel Polnareff. However, his artistic trade should be viewed in the same vein: an eclectic brew of equal parts goofing around, subversive thinking, and pop genius.

Ferrer was born in 1934 to a French father and an Italian mother, and a considerable part of his preteen years was spent under the stress of World War II. While his father was mining the far parts of the world in New Caledonia, in 1939 Ferrer and his mother found themselves stuck after a holiday in a hostile Italy. Reunited after the war, he grew up in a culturally stimulating environment. As a student of ethnology and archaeology, Ferrer developed a fondness for jazz and learned to play several instruments. Returning to Paris from a trip around the world, he decided to become a professional musician. Starting out as a hired hand in the capital's jazz circles, he was employed by bandleader Richard Bennett and later worked for American singer Nancy Holloway.

After quite a few misfires, his big break came unexpectedly with the EP Mirza in 1965. Apart from its biting lyrics, it stood out for an ecstatic organ bridge, played in one take by Bernard Estardy. Ferrer had befriended Estardy -- nicknamed "Le Baron" -- at college. Their creative but sometimes tense relationship enabled them to cook up several more successful EPs and the Southern soul-styled debut album Enrégistrement Public. Hearing the likes of Otis Redding had been a revelation to Ferrer; he even took his love for soul music as far as to proclaim a desire to be black on the album's opening track. As a result, Ferrer soon found himself uncomfortably stuck with an eccentric image similar to that of Dutronc. Being ten years the senior to most other yé-yé stars, he was equally unhappy with the show business treadmill of nearly 200 live performances in 1966. Ferrer decided to flee his popularity for Italy, where for several years he co-hosted the television variety show Lo, Agata e Tu with Raffaella Carrá (famed for 1977's European disco smash "A Far l'Amore Comincia Tu"). At the same time, he continued to release a string of increasingly cynical, at times politicized EPs (Mao et Moa, Le Roi de L'Angleterre). The wacky but irresistibly groovy Le Téléfon was a success in 1967 even outside of France.

In 1970 Ferrer returned to France, where he started working on what he perceived as his first "real" album. Serving brooding prog rock accompanied by more personal lyrics, Métronomie was again co-created with Estardy. Though the album went nowhere commercially, its not-so-representative leadoff track, "La Maison Près de la Fontaine," proved a huge mainstream success in France. This apparently irritated Ferrer, whose growing contempt for show business led him to view it as the umpteenth misconception of his artistic vision. In 1973 he found an ally in guitarist Mickey Finn. Together they started the group Leggs, who would accompany Ferrer on several albums from this point onward. On these he would switch directions many times: from rock & roll to gospel and from prog rock to laid-back funk. The latter style made up most of 1974's Nino and Radiah, which included another fruitful Estardy collaboration in the song Ferrer is best remembered for in France: "Le Sud." Over half a dozen more albums followed in the next 20 years, but their mixed reviews made Ferrer retire to family life and painting with ever greater intervals. A few days away from his 64th birthday, he dramatically ended his life by shooting himself in the heart in a corn field not far removed from the castle he had bought from the royalties of "Le Sud."
A l'Italie

Refrain :

It's a place that looks like Louisiana
Like Italy
There are clothes outside on the terrace
And that's lovely

It looks like the South1
Time seems to last longer
And life lasts surely
More than a million years
And always during the summer

There are many children who are playing on the lawn
There are many dogs
There's even a cat, a turtle, some goldfish
Nothing is missing

It looks like the South
Time seems to last longer
And life lasts surely
More than a million years
And always during the summer

One day or another
There will be war
As we all know
We don't like it, but we don't know what to do
We say that it's fate

Too bad for the South
However that was nice
We could have lived
More than a million years
And always during the summer

Anaïs - Mon coeur, mon amour - 2009
Nouvelle chanson française/Pop

Album: The Cheap Show (RYM: 3.14/5)

Artist Biography by John D. Buchanan (Allmusic)

French folk-blues chanteuse Anaïs first surfaced fronting the popular rock band Opossum before mounting a solo career in 2003. Born Anaïs Croze in Grenoble on August 20, 1976, she grew up in Marseille and later studied English in Aix-en-Provence. Anaïs led Opossum from 1999 to late 2002, when the band dissolved in the wake of its debut effort Excuse-Moi, J'voulais Te D'mander. Her first solo tour began the following spring, and in January 2004 she recorded her live debut LP, The Cheap Show, which hit retail a year later. The album's peculiar mélange of chanson, folk, blues, pop and rap struck a chord and it became a massive word-of-mouth success in France, entering the top ten and eventually selling over half a million copies – a sensational amount for a country in which no live debut album had ever been a success before. The album was reissued in 2006 with bonus tracks and a DVD. The following year, Anaïs collaborated with LA punks The Blood Arm, and wrote and performed a one-woman musical entitled The Amber Story. Her first proper studio disc, The Love Album, produced in collaboration with hip-hop legend Dan the Automator, dropped in 2008, but was not followed by another new record until 2012, when A l'Eau de Javel hit stores.
Ca dégouline d'amour
C'est beau mais c'est insupportable
C'est un pudding bien lourd
De mots doux à chaque phrase :

"Elle est bonne ta quiche, amour"
"Mon coeur, passe-moi la salade"
Et ça se fait des mamours
Se donne la becquée à table

Ce mélange de sentiments
Aromatisé aux fines herbes
Me fait sourire gentiment

Mon coeur, mon amour, mon amour, mon coeur
Mon coeur, mon amour, mon amour, mon coeur

It oozes with love
It's nice but it's unbearable
It's a stodgy plum pudding
Of sweet nothings with every phrase:

'Your quiche is wonderful, my love'
'Sweetheart, pass the lettuce'
And they start to bill and coo
Feeding each other like birds

This melange of emotions
Flavoured with fine spices
Makes me smile sicklily
Until finally I throw up

I hate couples, who remind me that I'm alone
I hate couples, I simply detest them
My love, my sweet, my love, my sweet

It's a thick sauce
Which leaves me gobsmacked
So much soppiness
Covered with clotted cream

'Cooeee, what are you doing my love?'
'The same thing as half an hour ago...'
'I rang you five minutes ago, angel, but you didn't pick up...
So I've called you back... for the 12th time today...
I've already blown my [fixed-rate] call-time...
But what are you doing my treasure?
Yes I know we're seeing each other later...
No it's your turn to hang up...No it's yours
No you hang up... No you...
No you... You... Oh OK I'll ring you back...'

I hate couples, who call each other when I'm alone
I hate couples, I simply detest them!
My love, my sweet, my love, my sweet.

Louise Attaque - J't'emmène au vent - 1997

Artist Biography by Jason Ankeny
Comme on a Dit French folk-rock quartet Louise Attaque emerged as one of the most successful new acts of their generation via their award-winning 1997 debut LP. Singer/guitarist Gaëtan Roussel and bassist Robin Feix first met as school children, bonding over their common obsession with popular music. While studying in Paris, they formed the group Caravage, enlisting drummer Alexandre Margraff to play the local nightclub circuit. An extended acoustic tour followed, and upon returning to Paris the trio added violinist Arnaud Samuel, whose string accompaniment heralded their embrace of richer, more folk-inspired melodic textures. After adopting the name Louise Attaque, the new lineup recorded its first demo tape and returned to touring. Following a breakthrough appearance at the Printemps de Bourges festival, they signed to the Atmosphériques label and traveled to Brussels to begin work on their debut, produced by Gordon Gano of American college rock legends Violent Femmes. Issued in April 1997, Louise Attaque's self-titled album slowly but surely proved a grassroots success, ultimately selling more than 2.5 million copies in spite of limited marketing. A return performance at the Printemps de Bourges festival was critical in building their fan base, as was a three-night stint at Paris' La Cigale. At the annual Victoires de la Musique awards in early 1999, Louise Attaque earned Best Group of the Year honors, creating even more outsized expectations for their 2000 follow-up, Comme on a Dit. While largely adhering to the formula outlined on the first LP, the album nevertheless boasted an edgier sound than the debut, and proved another commercial success. Eschewing conventional tour promotion, Louise Attaque instead curated a traveling festival show, supported by artists including Mickey 3D, Cornu, and Les Wampas as well as U.S. act 16 Horsepower. At year's end the band went on hiatus, and while Roussel and Samuel collaborated as a duo on L'Atelier, an acoustic album issued under the name Tarmac, Feix and Magraff also entered the studio, creating an electronic effort as Ali Dragon. After spending much of 2004 recording at New York City's famed Electric Ladyland, Louise Attaque finally released their third album, A Plus Tard Crocodile, in the fall of 2005, introducing elements of electronica and reggae absent from previous efforts. In 2006 they released the live album En Concert - Y’a t’il quelqu’un ici? Their first Best of compilation, Du monde tout autour followed in 2011.

Come on, I take you away in the wind, I take you above the people,
And I would like you to remember that our love is eternal and not artificial

I would like you to come ahead, to be here now and then
And I would like you to remember that our love is eternal and not artificial

I would like you to call me more often, sometimes to take the initiative
And I would like you to remember that our love is eternal and not artificial

I would like you to be the one I hear, come on, I take you above the people,
And I would like you to remember our eternal and artificial fling

Jacques Dutronc - Proverbes - 1968

Artist Biography by Yuri German (AllMusic)
Singer/songwriter Jacques Dutronc gained popularity in his native France with his provocative songs that matched the rebellious spirit of the '60s so well. Though he was absent from the musical scene for nearly a decade, pursuing a film career, he successfully returned to music in the early '80s and still remains one of the most popular performers in the French-speaking world.

Dutronc started as a guitarist in the small rock group El Toro et les Cyclones, who recorded two singles. In 1965, he was asked by the manager of Françoise Hardy to write a few songs for her, so Dutronc composed "Le Temps de l'Amour" and "Va Pas Prendre un Tambour." Having proven himself a successful songwriter, Dutronc decided to pursue a solo career. It started in 1966 with such hits as "Et Moi et Moi, et Moi," "On Nous Cache Tout, On Nous Dit Rien," "Les Play-Boys," and others. His 1968 song "Paris S'Eveille" became an instant classic of French pop music. In 1973, Dutronc successfully ventured into film acting, which would eventually bring him a Best Actor Cesar (a French equivalent to Oscar) for the leading role in Van Gogh.

Brèves Rencontres His musical career resumed in 1980 with the release of the album Guerre et Pets, the result of his collaboration with Serge Gainsbourg. It was followed by 1984 hit single "Merde in France." The 1987 album CQF Dutronc boasted the work of Earl Slick (David Bowie's guitarist), Jean-Jacques Burnel (Stranglers), and Etienne Daho, among others. After the successful 1992 tour, Dutronc released a live album and a collection of his old hits. His 1995 studio album Brèves Rencontres was produced and arranged by Erdal Kizilcay.

They say that
Thinking up an ideal situation is far from achieving it [the cup is far from the lips].

And that out of sight is out of mind [far from the eyes is far from the heart]
But I'm thirsty for your heat
And if you don't return I'll burst

It's impossible to reason with someone who is starving [a hungry stomach has no ears]
But I'm hungry and I'm still listening
I'm hungry for you and I'm waiting for you
While sleeping on my decisions [in the night which brings advice]

They say that
It's those closest to you who betray you
But I don't want to believe it
I have belief in you and my hope
Is to tell myself that you return.

There are plenty of other potential partners [one is lost, 10 are found]
And out of sight, out of mind
But I don't want to forget you
Because my heart is a watch that's always giving the right time

I beg you to come back to me, come back
With you I want to see tomorrow
Because without you
The morning is in darkness

They say that
All that glitters is not gold
Always watch out for the quiet ones [beware of the sleeping water]
But you're the light in my night time
I would like you to become my wife

You must take your pleasure where you find it
But my pleasure doesn't exist without you
Without you I don't want to take a step
And all the others disapprove of me

They say that
It's time that makes the song (1)
And that sleeping on it brings wisdom [the night brings advice]
But you see that they are wrong
I don't sleep at night, I watch

All's well that end's well
I'd really like to listen to them;
To believe that they're telling the truth
They say that you will be there tomorrow

I beg you to return to me, return
With you I want to see tomorrow
Because without you the morning is in darkness.

Comments :
Most of these are set sayings in French that don't correlate well in English (like you'd lose the meaning of for example 'spend a penny' if you translated it word for word to another language). I've translated the sense and put the literal meaning in square brackets.

(1) the usual proverb is c'est le ton qui fait la chanson - it's the tone that makes the song - ie the intention which is attributed to an action stems from how it is done. The author has swapped le temps (time) for le ton (tone) - I'm not sure what the intended metaphor is?

BB Brunes - Lalalove you - 2009

Artist Biography by Matt Collar (AllMusic)
Blonde Comme Moi French pop-punk trio BB Brunes features members who have known each other since they were kids. In 2005, a demo recording caught the ears of a college friend of the band who passed it along to his father and former member of the rockabilly revivalist trio Les Costars who had just created his own label. Excited by BB Brunes' youthful exuberance and punk attitude, Claud Sitruk signed the band. A series of high-profile gigs subsequently led to the band recording its debut album Blonde Comme Moi which was released on Warner in 2007. During 2009 their second disc Nico Teen Love appeared and contained popular single “Lalalove You.” A year later the French quartet released a self titled EP -- their first English-sung material -- and the fan-favorite track “Dis-moi” featured on popular video game Rock Band 3. Their third album, Long Courrier, was released in 2013.
Mes peurs se sont toues endormies
mes vacarmes sonores
N'ont pas ouvert l'oeil de la nuit
Blotti contre ton corps

I love you

I love you

I love you

My fears all fall asleep
My thundering disquiet
Doesn't lose a wink of sleep
Snuggled up against your body

I feel like I'm in a bed
of rolls of gold
My Northern winds, my Do Ré Mis
Are dead from now on.

She tells me that she only likes "Les Slows" in English
And I sigh very French Shakespeare
If eloquence drags behind
The intention is there
When I say...
I love you

In a vase (able to contain only one flower) I have placed
my most beautiful flower
I bring it to my enamored heart
And see this love blossom

Yesterday, I was like a grey wolf
Howling at the moon and dead
My life, this little humming-bird
of sensous colours.

She tells me that she only likes "Les Slows" in English
And I sigh very French Shakespeare
If eloquence drags behind
The intention is queen
When I say...
I love you

She tells me that she only likes sweet English words,
That I sigh very French Shakespeare
If eloquence drags behind
Don't be mad at me Lady when I say...
I love you.

I'm really loving and appreciating this thread, Romain! These are some of these greatest aspects of the forum, having people from around the world exposing others to their country's music. This thread particularly affects me, as I have held a longtime dream of eventually visiting and maybe having a student stay in France at some point in my life. As a student of film and passionate cinephile, it really is the perfect city to visit.

Ho, it's so cute. I blush.

When you say "..the perfect city to visit", are you talking about Lyon, la ville des frères Lumière ? Or it's an error country/city.

Pierre Perret - Mon P'tit Loup - 1979

Artist Biography by John D. Buchanan (AllMusic)
The music of Pierre Perret captured the lives of the French working class with uncommon precision. A supremely gifted lyricist renowned for his mordant wit and playful eroticism, his songs employed everyday slang to startlingly poetic effect. Born in Castelsarrazin on July 9, 1934, Perret spent a sizable chunk of his adolescence in his father's restaurant, Le Café du Pont, absorbing the street-smart patois of the local workers who comprised its core clientele. At the same time, he studied music theory and saxophone, and later attended the Toulouse Conservatoire. Beginning in 1953, Perret served a three-year term in the French military. Assigned to the army music corps, he began writing his first songs, and during a subsequent stint playing guitar in support of aspiring singer Françoise Lô (later known as Sophie Makhno), he occasionally performed his own material in between sets. In time Perret came to the attention of agent Emile Hebey, who introduced him to label owner Eddie Barclay. His debut single, "Moi J'Attends Adèle," was released in 1957, but despite a regular presence on the Paris nightclub circuit, most notably an extended residency at the Colombe on the Ile de la Cité, the record failed to catch on.

After a 1958 tour of Africa and France in support of the immortal American R&B vocal quintet the Platters, Perret was diagnosed with pleurisy. He spent the better part of two years in a sanatorium, writing the songs that comprised his 1960 debut LP, Le Bonheur Conjugal, but sales were again middling and Barclay terminated his contract. Perret resurfaced on Vogue in 1963 with "Le Tord Boyaux" ("Rot Gut"). The single proved a blockbuster hit, selling more than 100,000 copies and establishing the acerbic wit that would remain the hallmark of his lyrics for the duration of his career. A series of follow-up hits including "Trop Contente" and "La Corrida" culminated with 1966's "Les Jolies Colonies de Vacances," the biggest and most beloved French pop song of its year. That November, Perret headlined his first performance at the famed Olympia Theatre, returning two years later to cut a live album. After co-starring in Claude Autant-Lara's 1969 feature film Les Patates, Perret resumed his music career with 1971's "La Cage aux Oiseaux." His biggest hit to date, 1974's "Le Zizi" ("The Willy") sold more than five million copies, but in the years to follow his music grew more thoughtful, with 1977's "Lily" winning the Prix de la Ligue Contre le Racisme et l'Antisémitisme for its attack on racism.

Perret subsequently explored suburban malaise ("Y'a des Gosses Dans l'Escalier"), abortion ("Elle Attend Son Petit"), and famine ("Riz Pile"), and spent much of the 1980s channeling his energy into books, most notably Le Petit Perret Illustré par l'Exemple. In 1983 Perret traveled to China, the inspiration behind the album Comment C'Est la Chine? In 1987, he published a cookbook, Au Petit Perret Gourmand, and continued work on a three-volume update of The Fables of La Fontaine written in contemporary slang. He did not release a new LP until 1992's Bercy Madeleine, returning a year later with Chansons de Toute une Vie, a compendium assembling 250 of his songs. The 1995 release of Anthologie de la Chanson Érotique was overshadowed by the death of Perret's youngest daughter, Julie, and after more than a year out of the limelight, he resurfaced in late 1996 with an extended stay at the Casino de Paris, recorded for a subsequent live album. That same year, he also earned the Grand Prix de la Chanson Française and published a book on the art of eating titled La Cuisine de Ma Femme.

Perret finally returned to recording with 1998's La Bête Est Revenue, a blistering meditation on the rise of the far-right French National Front. 2002's Cui-La continued to tackle weighty themes such as globalization, but on 2006's Mélangez-Vous he returned to the playful wit of his early work. During the next few years, as well as a children's album, Pierrot Chante pour les Gamins, he released a trio of records which were decidely not for children: Le Plaisir des Dieux (2007), Les Dieux Paillards (2008) and Trésors de la Paillardise (2009) collected the bawdiest and most lecherous of French songs and bore the legend "Oreilles chastes s'abstenir" ("Chaste ears should abstain"). In 2010 he returned to a more politicized style with the album La Femme Grillagée, which spoke out against the maltreatment and subordination of women.

(Refrain:)
T´en fais, pas mon p´tit loup,
C´est la vie, ne pleure pas.
T´oublieras, mon p´tit loup,
Ne pleur´ pas.

Je t´amèn´rai sécher tes larmes
Au vent des quat´ points cardinaux,
Respirer la violett´ à Parme
Et les épices à Colombo.
On verra le fleuve Amazon´
Et la vallée des Orchidées
Et les enfants qui se savonn´nt
Le ventre avec des fleurs coupées.

(Refrain)
T´en fais, pas mon p´tit loup,
C´est la vie, ne pleure pas.
T´oublieras, mon p´tit loup,

J´te racont´rai l´succès qu´j´ai eu
Un jour en jouant Sganarelle.

(Refrain)
T´en fais, pas mon p´tit loup,
C´est la vie, ne pleure pas.
T´oublieras, mon p´tit loup,

(Refrain)
T´en fais, pas mon p´tit loup,
C´est la vie, ne pleure pas.
T´oublieras, mon p´tit loup,
Ne pleur´ pas.

J´t´apprendrai, à la Jamaïque
La pêche´ de nuit au lamparo
Et j´t´emmènerai faire un pique-nique
En haut du Kilimandjaro
Et tu grimperas sur mon dos
Pour voir le plafond d´la Sixtine.
On s´ra fasciné au Prado
Par les Goya ou les Menine.

(Refrain)
T´en fais, pas mon p´tit loup,
C´est la vie, ne pleure pas.
T´oublieras, mon p´tit loup,
Ne pleur´ pas.

Connais-tu, en quadriphonie,
Le dernier tube de Mahler
Et les planteurs de Virginie
Qui ne savent pas qu´y a un hiver.
On en a des chos´s à voir
Jusqu´à la Louisiane en fait
Où y a des typ´s qui ont tous les soirs
Du désespoir plein la trompett´.

T´en fais pas, mon p´tit loup,
C´est la vie, ne pleur´ pas.
Oublie-les, les p´tits cons
Qui t´ont fait ça.
T´en fais pas, mon p´tit loup,
C´est la vie, ne pleur´ pas.
J´t´en supplie, mon p´tit loup,
Ne pleure pas.

Don't worry sweetheart
That's life, don't cry
You will forget, sweetheart
Don't cry.

I'll take you to dry your tears
Through the winds of north south east and west
You will smell the violets in Parma
And the spices in Colombo
We shall see the Amazon river
And the valley of the orchids
And the children who wash their bellies
With crushed fragrant flowers

Let's go and admire Abraham's land
It's even more beautiful than they say.
There are VanGoghs in Amsterdam
That look like burning fires.
We'll taste raw herrings
And we'll drink Mosel wine.
I'll tell you how I made a hit
When I was acting Sganarelle*

I will take you to Liverpool
And its chaplets of haddock
And to coutries where whores
Sing as loud as roosters.
I'm sure you will love the greatest books
Written by Colette, Marcel Aymé,
Rabelais or Léautaud.**

In Jamaica I will teach you
How to practise light-fishing
And I'll take you for a picnic
On top of the Kilimanjaro
And you will climb on my back
To admire the Sixtine chapel.
We'll be fascinated in the Prado
By the Goyas and Las Meninas

Do you know in quadraphony
The last hit of Mahler
And the Virginia planters
Who do not know winter exists.
We've got so many things to see
Up to Louisiana in fact
Where guys every night
Play their trumpets full of despair.

Don't worry, sweetheart,
That's life, don't cry
Do forget the little bastards
Who did that to you.
Don't worry, sweetheart,
That's life, don't cry
I beg you, sweetheart,
Don't cry.

I say that, because Lyon, the city where I live is the city of the Lumière Brothers, the inventor of the cinema.

And where the first film of the history was shot :

Soo, for a cinéphile, I imagine it can be interesting ;)

Wow, I had totally forgotten that the Lumiere's city was Lyon! Romain, you should feel lucky to live in such a historic place (and not just for the purpose of cinema history, of course!)

J´ai beau vouloir me remonter
Je souffre de tous les côtés.

J´ai la rate
Qui s´dilate
J´ai le foie
Qu´est pas droit
J´ai le ventre
Qui se rentre
J´ai l´pylore
Qui s´colore
J´ai l´gésier [gosier]
Anémié
L´estomac
Bien trop bas
Et les côtes
Bien trop hautes
J´ai les hanches
Qui s´démanchent
L´épigastre
Qui s´encastre
L´abdomen
Qui s´démène
J´ai l´thorax
Qui s´désaxe
La poitrine
Qui s´débine
Les épaules
Qui se frôlent
J´ai les reins
Bien trop fins
Les boyaux
Bien trop gros

Raplapla
Les mollets
Trop épais
Les orteils
Pas pareils
J´ai le cœur
En largeur
Les poumons
Tout en long
L´occiput
Qui chahute
J´ai les coudes
Qui s´dessoudent
J´ai les seins
Sous l´bassin
Et l´bassin
Qu´est pas sain

{Refrain}

Me voyant troublé, ell´ me dit :
- Qu´avez vous? moi j´lui répondis :

J´ai la rate
Qui s´dilate
J´ai le foie
Qu´est pas droit
J´ai le ventre
Qui se rentre
J´ai l´pylore
Qui s´colore
J´ai l´gésier [gosier]

Qu´est pas sain
En plus d´ça
J´vous l´cach´ pas
J´ai aussi
Quel souci!
La luette
Trop fluette
L´oesophage
Qui surnage
Les gencives
Qui dérivent
J´ai l´palais
Qu´est pas laid
Mais les dents
C´est navrant
J´ai les p´tites
Qui s´irritent
Et les grosses
Qui s´déchaussent
Les canines
S´ratatinent
Les molaires
S´font la paire
Dans les yeux
C´est pas mieux
J´ai le droit
Qu´est pas droit
Et le gauche
Qu´est bien moche
J´ai les cils
Qui s´défilent
Les sourcils
Qui s´épilent
J´ai l´menton
Qu´est trop long
Les artères
Trop pépères
J´ai le nez
Tout bouché
L´trou du cou
Qui s´découd
Et du coup
Voyez-vous
J´suis gêné
Pour parler
C´est vexant
Car maint´nant
J´suis forcé
D´m´arrêter.

{Refrain}

Since I am on Earth [in the army]
It's not funny. Between you and me,
I have a poor health,
And I'm worried sick
Well might I try to get better
I suffer from every sides

I've got my spleen
That's swelling
I've got my liver
That's not straight
I've got my belly
That's pulling in
I've got my pylorus
That's coloring
I've got my gizzard
Weakening
My stomach
Far too low
And my ribs
Far too high
I've got my hips
That are itching
My epigastrium
That's embedding itself
My abdomen
That's thrashing about
I've got my thorax
That's throwing off balance
My chest
That's falling apart
My shoulders
That are brushing against each other
I've got my kidneys
Far too thin
My bowels
Far too big
I've got my sternum
That's unseating itself
And my sacrum
It feels the same
I've got my belly button
All spinning out of control
And my coccyx
That's unscrewing itself

Ah ! Good God ! How annoying it is
To always feel dodgy,
Ah ! Good God ! How annoying it is,
I'm not in good health.

In order to try and heal as fast as possible,
A morning recently
I went to visit
The major of the regiment.
[A very impressive medic]
What do you suffer from ? he asked
It's fair simple, I replied to him

I've got my spleen
That's swelling
I've got my liver
That's not straight
And then I
Added
You see
That's not all
I've got my knees
That are all flabby
I've got my femur
That's too hard
I've got my thighs
That are stiffening
My pins [legs]
That are like jelly
I've got my ankles
That are wiggling
My kneecaps
That are fluttering
My shinbones
All worn out
My calves
Too thick
My toes
Not alike
I've got my heart
Lengthwise
My lungs
All long and narrow
My occiput
That's heckling
I've got my elbows
That are unsoldering
I've got my breasts
Under my pelvis
And my pelvis
That's not well

{chorus}

With a charming young lady
I should have got married by love
But one night, as I was close to her,
Courting her,
Seeing me confused, she tells me:
- What's wrong ? And I answered her:

I've got my spleen
That's swelling
I've got my liver
That's not straight
I've got my belly
That's pulling in
I've got my pylorus
That's coloring
I've got my gizzard
Weakening
My stomach
Far too low
And my ribs
Far too high
I've got my hips
That are itching
My epigastrium
That's embedding itself
My abdomen
That's thrashing about
I've got my thorax
That's throwing off balance
My chest
That's falling apart
My shoulders
That are brushing against each other
I've got my kidneys
Far too thin
My bowels
Far too big
I've got my sternum
That's unseating itself
And my sacrum
It feels the same
I've got my belly button
All spinning out of control
And my coccyx
That's unscrewing itself
And then I
Added
You see
That's not all
I've got my knees
That are all flabby
I've got my femur
That's too hard
I've got my thighs
That are stiffening
My pins [legs]
That are like jelly
I've got my ankles
That are wiggling
My kneecaps
That are fluttering
My shinbones
All worn out
My calves
Too thick
My toes
Not alike
I've got my heart
Lengthwise
My lungs
All long and narrow
My occiput
That's heckling
I've got my elbows
That are unsoldering
I've got my breasts
Under my pelvis
And my pelvis
That's not well
Along with that
I'm not hiding it from you
I also have
What a pain !
My uvula's
Too skinny
My oesophagus
That's floating
My gums
That are drifting
I've got my palate
That's not ugly
But my teeth
It's a pity
I've got the small ones
That are chafing
And the big ones
That are coming loose
My eye teeth
Shriveling
My molars
Making a match
As for my eyes
It's no better
I've got the right one
That's not right
And the left one
That's quite hideous
I've got my lashes
That are slipping off
My eyebrows
That are shaving themselves
I've got the chin
That is too long
My arteries
Too dull
I've got my nose
All blocked up
The hole at the base of my neck
That is unstitching
And so
You see
I'm embarrassed
To talk
It's hurtful
'Cause now
I'm forced
To stop.

Bourvil - C'était bien (au petit bal perdu) - 1961

One of the most beautiful "old" French chanson for me :

Wikipédia :
André Bourvil, born André Robert Raimbourg (French pronunciation: [ɑ̃dʁe buʁˈvil]; 27 July 1917, Prétot-Vicquemare, France – 23 September 1970, Paris), was a French actor and singer best known for his roles in comedy films, most notably in his collaboration with Louis de Funès in the films Le Corniaud (1965) and La Grande Vadrouille (1966). For his performance in Le Corniaud, he won a Special Diploma at the 4th Moscow International Film Festival.
In his comic performances Bourvil principally played roles of gentle and well-meaning characters who were often a bit obtuse or naive, such as his roles opposite the hyperactive, dishonest and bossy ones played by Louis de Funès. Bourvil's characters not only managed to make viewers laugh, but also to save themselves from the Machiavellian designs of adversaries.

Bourvil was, however, also capable of more dramatic roles such as the handyman in L'Arbre de Noël (1969). In this role he observes the relationship between a man he works for and the young son who has fallen ill. The audience can identify with the character played by Bourvil, just as they can in his comic roles, so often as a simple man. One can also note his role of Thénardier in the film adaptation of Les Misérables (1958), and his last role as the policeman Mattei in Jean-Pierre Melville's Le Cercle rouge (1970).

In March 1948, Bourvil took part in the complete recording of Offenbach's The Tales of Hoffmann with artists of the Paris Opéra-Comique conducted by André Cluytens, playing the four 'servant' roles.

C'était tout juste après la guerre,
Dans un petit bal qu'avait souffert.
Sur une piste de misère,
Y'en avait deux, à découvert.
Parmi les gravats ils dansaient
Dans ce petit bal qui s'appelait...
Qui s'appelait...
qui s'appelait...
qui s'appelait...

(Refrain)
Non je ne me souviens plus
du nom du bal perdu.
Ce dont je me souviens
ce sont ces amoureux
Qui ne regardaient rien autour d'eux.
Y'avait tant d'insouciance
Dans leurs gestes émus,
Alors quelle importance
Le nom du bal perdu ?
Non je ne me souviens plus
du nom du bal perdu.
Ce dont je me souviens
c'est qu'ils étaient heureux
Les yeux au fond des yeux.
Et c'était bien...
Et c'était bien...

Ils buvaient dans le même verre,
Toujours sans se quitter des yeux.
Ils faisaient la même prière,
D'être toujours, toujours heureux.
Parmi les gravats ils souriaient
Dans ce petit bal qui s'appelait...
Qui s'appelait...
qui s'appelait...
qui s'appelait...

(au Refrain)

Et puis quand l'accordéoniste
S'est arrêté, ils sont partis.
Le soir tombait dessus la piste,
Sur les gravats et sur ma vie.
Il était redevenu tout triste
Ce petit bal qui s'appelait,
Qui s'appelait...
qui s'appelait...
qui s'appelait...

Non je ne me souviens plus
du nom du bal perdu.
Ce dont je me souviens
ce sont ces amoureux
Qui ne regardaient rien autour d'eux.
Y'avait tant de lumière,
Avec eux dans la rue,
Alors la belle affaire
Le nom du bal perdu.
Non je ne me souviens plus
du nom du bal perdu.
Ce dont je me souviens
c'est qu'on était heureux
Les yeux au fond des yeux.
Et c'était bien...
Et c'était bien.

It was just after the war,
In a ballroom that had suffered
On a floor in ruins,
There were these two, so exposed.
They danced among the rubble
In this little ball, what was its name…
What was its name…
What was its name…
What was its name…

(Refrain)
No, I don’t recall
The name of this lost prom
What I remember
Are these two lovers
With eyes for no one but each other.
There was such insouciance
In their moving gestures,
So what does it matter
The name of the lost prom?
No, I don’t recall
The name of this lost prom.
What I remember
Is that they were happy
Lost in each other’s eyes
As it should be…
As it should be…

They drank from the same glass
Never turning away their gaze
They both made the same wish
To be happy, forever after
They smiled among the rubble
In this little ball, what was its name…
What was its name…
What was its name…
What was its name…

(Refrain)

Then when the accordionist
Stopped playing, they left
Evening fell over the dance floor,
Over the rubble and over my life.
A melancholy site, it became
This little prom, what was its name,
What was its name…
What was its name…
What was its name…

No, I don’t recall
The name of this lost prom.
What I remember
Are these two lovers
With eyes for no one but each other.
There was so much light,
With them in the street,
So what does it matter,
The name of the lost prom.
No, I don’t recall
The name of this lost prom.
What I remember
Is that they were happy
Lost in each other’s eyes
And it was good...
And it was good...

Boby Lapointe - Méli-Mélodie - 1970

Robert (Boby) Lapointe (16 April 1922 – 29 June 1972) was a French singer, noted for his humorous texts, alliterations and plays on words.

He was born in Pézenas, in the Hérault département of France. A brilliant pupil, he prepared for the entrance exam to the Centrale (engineering school) and Sup-Aero at Montpellier, but was conscripted into the Youth Building Projects in 1942 and sent to Linz, Austria, in 1943 for compulsory work service. He escaped the same year, and found work as a diver in La Ciotat, a suburb of Marseille, in 1944.

In 1946, he married Colette Maclaud. They had two children, Ticha (born 1948) and Jacky (1950).

His first published work, Les douze chants d'un imbecile, appeared in 1951. He moved to Paris and opened a fashion and baby clothes shop, still writing and producing plays. Later, he switched to being a fitter of TV aerials and began singing.

His fame grew when the actor Bourvil sang Lapointe's song Aragon et Castille in the 1954 film Poisson d'avril. In 1960, film director François Truffaut offered him a part in Tirez sur le Pianiste in which he sang Framboise, accompanied by Charles Aznavour on piano. This marked the start of a career that saw Lapointe perform at major venues throughout France. His joyful character led him to build friendships with the likes of Anne Sylvestre, Raymond Devos, Jacques Brel and Georges Brassens.

Lapointe was also a mathematician, and developed the bi-bi-binary system (also known as the bibi system) in 1971.
Oui, mon doux minet, la mini,
Oui, la mini est la manie
Est la manie de Mélanie
Mélanie l'amie d'Amélie...
Amélie dont les doux nénés
Doux nénés de nounou moulés
Dans de molles laines lamées
Et mêlées de lin milanais...
Amélie dont les nénés doux
Ont donné à l'ami Milou
(Milou le dadais de Limoux)
L'idée d'amener des minous...
Des minous menus de Lima
Miaulant dans les dais de damas
Et dont les mines de lama
Donnaient mille idées à Léda...

Léda dont les dix dents de lait
Laminaient les mâles mollets
D'un malade mendiant malais
Dinant d'amibes amidonnées
Mais même amidonnée l'amibe
Même l'amibe malhabile
Emmiellée dans la bile humide
L'amibe, ami, mine le bide...
Et le dit malade adulé
Dont Léda limait les mollets
Indûment le mal a donné
Dame Léda l'y a aidé !
Et Léda dont la libido
Demande dans le bas du dos
Mille lents mimis d'animaux

Yes, my kitty, oh my teeny,1
Yes, the teeny is the frenzy
the frenzy of Felicity1
Felicity friend of Finley...
Finley, this teen with sweety twins
These sweety twins, like nanny's kins
Molded in wool, lamé and thin
and mingled with Milan's linen...
Finley, the teen2 whose mushy twins
Elicited the buddy Finn3
(That Finn doggy from near the Fens4)
To seek kitties as privy friends
Kits of visit from far Finland
Meowing in cloth of finest brand
Whose ermin5 grins, you understand,
Sowed plenty thoughts in Leda's mind...6

Goddess Leda whose load of fangs
Would munch onto those manly calves
Of a tremblant tramp lank who starved
Supping of fats shrouded in starch
Yet even starched, those wicked fats
Even the fats severed in halves
And waxen-wrapped in wet kind gall
That fat, my pal, will harm your gut
And that said tramp, that sickened smut
That had Leda dining his butt
Alas, behold that bad rebut
Lady Leda7 gave it her part
Leda and her libido stack
Craves from the base of her sly back
From all critters thousands of smacks
And to the kits gave a stark rack...

And the kitties with rack supplied
Begging from midday to midnight
Finley's titties for milk delight
Damn 'em, threw in that filthy fat
Had her endure the sick of cat
That frail Finley with such fine breast
Evils in loads had it all messed
That great physique with grace so blessed
Felicity put it to rest
Sickened, ugly, and full of sweat
And she granted through fingers wet
A spit of silt from Scituate spit
Now, tell me, spit, where is that kit?
Where's your kitty, Felicity?
- That shabby kit's in secrecy
Felicity fell in swiftly8

Ah la la la la! What a marshmallow, dear!
Ah la la la la! What a mishmash lode 'ere!

1.I had the names, among other things, adapted, to keep the melody at the cost of the litteracy
2.it's not exactly expressed that she's a teen, I hope you will accept it. Let's say she's 19 :).
3.Dog's name, especially him: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finn_(dog) In the original, it's Milou, which is especially the dog from Tintin, in English "Snowy"
4.indeed, Finn worked between Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire
5.ermins, cute creatures that kinda look like cats, do live in northern regions including Finland
6.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leda_(mythology) She is actually not a goddess, but she was ra...seduced by Zeus (in the form of a swan), and she gave birth to Helen of Troy. In this case, I managed to keep the original character (it's Leda in Lapointe's original).
7.lucky finding here: this "rhyming" phrase is a literal translation!
8.The conclusion is slightly different to that of the original.

Richard Gotainer - La ballade de l'obsédé - 1982

Album : Chants Zazous

RFI musique (biography):

Talented French singer/songwriter Richard Gotainer is renowned for his lively stage performances, his sharp sense of humour and his witty, ironic lyrics. From the very beginning of his career, critics have considered Gotainer as something of a 'class clown', but in fact the philosophy behind his songs is often far more serious than it appears. Half-serious, half-ambiguous and always extremely funny, Richard Gotainer is certainly a true original in the music world!

Richard Gotainer was born in Paris (in the city's 12th arrondissement) on 30 March 1948.

In the 60's Richard developed an interest in film and music, becoming a passionate Beatles fan. His parents were none too keen on him launching an artistic career, however, so to appease them Richard enrolled at law school (where he would study for the next five years). Richard did not devote himself to law entirely, however. He spent much of his free time travelling and picking up odd student jobs here and there. In the 70's Richard began to spend more and more time working for advertising agencies. With his witty sense of humour and his apparently limitless flow of creative ideas, the work continued to flow in over the next few years. Indeed, advertising agencies jumped on the brilliant young man who was capable of coming up with hundreds of catchy advertising slogans at the drop of a hat.

Yet, in spite of his phenomenal success in the advertising world, Richard soon grew tired of his copywriting job. The talented young musician soon set to work writing music and creating special sound effects, in the hope of using these together with his slogans. But Richard's wacky style was judged too 'creative' for the advertising world. However, it did catch the eye of an adventurous young director by the name of Jacques Gaudillat. Discovering that they were on the same wavelength, Gotainer and Gaudillat left their respective agencies and created their own company, Gatkess. The pair's off-the-wall humour and crazy visual style scored an enormous hit in the French advertising world and Gotainer's jingles went on to become some of the most famous catch-phrases on French TV in the 70's.

This was back in 1976 when, besides writing jingles and advertising slogans, Gotainer was also experimenting on the music scene. Indeed, Gotainer went on to meet a number of leading musicians on the French music scene such as Claude Engel (the guitarist from the legendary French jazz/rock group Magma). The pair hit it off immediately and Gotainer showed Engel the impressive collection of songs he had already written. Engel began setting the lyrics to music and within a few months the pair had enough material to go into the studio and record their first album, "Forgeur de tempo". Released in 1977, "Forgeur de tempo" proved a huge hit with the critics who loved Gotainer's ironic lyrics and the album's funny cartoon-style ambience.

Gotainer Scores a Hit With "Tout foufou"

After the success of "Forgeur de tempo", Gotainer and Engel went on to team up with Engel's sound engineer brother Marcel (aka Celmar) in 1979. The trio then returned to the studio and set to work on a second album entitled "Contes de traviole" - an album which really confirmed the talent of the budding young singer Gotainer! Needless to say, Gotainer's vocals soon went on to make their mark on the French music scene after the release of the best-selling single "Tout foufou", which proved to be just the first in a whole string of hits. The legendary French comedian Coluche - whose ironic sketches and irreverential gags were, in fact, in a similar vein to Gotainer's witty songwriting style - was so impressed by the young singer/songwriter's talent that he invited him to perform as his support act when he appeared at the famous Paris cabaret, Le Café de la Gare, in July 1980. Richard Gotainer soon found himself much in demand - for, in November of that year veteran French rocker Eddy Mitchell also invited the rising young star to support him at the Olympia (the most prestigious music venue in Paris!).

While Gotainer was supporting Eddy Mitchell at the Olympia, his new single "Primitif" was also making its way to the top of the French charts. Riding high on a wave of success, Gotainer soon followed this smash with a whole string of hit singles such as "Chipie" and "Le Sampa". The latter was used as the theme tune to Claude Berri's film "Le maître d'école" - starring Coluche - and proved such a hit with the French public that it went gold soon after its release! "Primitif", "Chipie" and "Le Sampa" were released independently of any album - in fact, Gotainer did not appear to need to release a new album. His popularity amongst the French public was soaring, and audiences were going wild for his performances on French TV.

Gotainer returned to the studio in 1982 to record a third album entitled "Chants Zazous". This album found the singer experimenting with a new musical direction, playing down his 'crazy', fun-loving side and performing a collection of songs which were much more tender and romantic (although still written in collaboration with his faithful songwriting partner Claude Engel). "Chants Zazous" also featured an innovative cover version of Vivaldi's "Four Seasons". But the most outstanding track on Gotainer's new album was undoubtedly "le Mambo du décalco" - a song which added another gold disc to the singer's collection shortly after its release!

The Zazou Show

The following year Gotainer gave full rein to his singing talent and his creative imagination when he performed at the Olympia (8 - 13 March 1983). His "Show Zazou", a sumptuous stage extravaganza featuring backing singers, dancers, wild costumes and spectacular lighting effects, proved an enormous hit with the French public. Then, in the autumn of '83, Gotainer set off on a triumphant tour, playing 12 dates up and down the country, before performing a final grand finale in Paris.

In 1985 Gotainer returned to the studio to begin work on a new album entitled "Poil à la pub". This highly original album reflected Gotainer's success in both the advertising and the music world and featured a mix of 85 of his jingles and comic sketches.

At night, when I'm alone, on the bed in my little bedroom
In my mind, I'm flirting with pussies' pussies
Hand-sewn chicks, that I imagine to be everywhere
All alone I'm having a ball, I put my bed completely upside down
I'm a garter belt maniac
- That's the obsessional ballad

With bags under my eyes, I wander into sex shops
Always looking for a little stronger dose
I even have a plastic doll in a cupboard
But that's not enough anymore, I'm a sex-addict
I've got a naughty glimmer deep inside of my eyes
- That's the dirty man's ballad

Hidden in a bush, lying in ambush in a public garden
I'm waiting for an old man to doze off on a bench
Then without waking him up, I dress him up as a baby doll
And I swear at him while showing him my willie
I've got a tortured libido
- That's the deranged guy's ballad

All naked under a coat, hands in my pockets
I walk down in my slippers to prawl around the Avenue Foch (*)
I'm going around like a beast, spying on nymphomaniacs
And I show the inside of my coat to scare old ladies

Grenades in my pocket, pins in hand
I go to department stores to try on briefs
I take hostages, I keep them under control
And I force them to write dirty words on the toilet walls
I'm an obscene violent guy
- That's the sex maniac's ballad !

Someday, without any doubt, all this will come to a bad end
Thinking I'm seeing a female, I'll jump on a guy
But now I end this blues, and pathetically
I'm rushing to make little babies to my inflatable doll
I can't help thinking about it
- That's the deranged guy's ballad

I'm a garter belt maniac
- That's the obsessional ballad

I've got a naughty glimmer deep inside of my eyes
- That's the dirty man's ballad

Hubert-Félix Thiéfaine - Guichet 102 - 2001

Artist Biography by Olivier Duboc (AllMusic)

French singer/songwriter Hubert-Félix Thiéfaine is an artist whose work one may find very difficult to file in any genre. Influenced by Bob Dylan and Lou Reed as well as Léo Ferré, Jacques Brel, and French writers, his music first took shape as a form of folk-rock, turning darker and more synthetic in the '80s and constantly evolving with time into a quite personal style of pop featuring poetic, daring, and sometimes difficult lyrics. Never submitting to musical fashion or ideology, Thiéfaine's work might be considered just as original as that of Jacques Higelin or Gérard Manset, expressing a conflicted and sometimes odd personality. Although Thiéfaine has opted out of the mass-media music business since the beginning of his career in 1978, he has managed to attract a large and faithful audience, selling more records and concert tickets than one might imagine given the level of his exposure, and gaining cult status along the way.

Hubert-Félix Thiéfaine was born in Dole, Jura, in 1948. Having had a quite unhappy childhood, he quickly encountered issues at school. Developing a great deal of imagination at that time and already with a rebellious streak, he started writing songs with a couple of friends at the early age of 12. He later managed to make it through university, where a friendly collaboration with the folk-influenced Tony Carbonare began.

In 1976, he was signed to record his first LP, Tout Corps Vivant Branché Sur le Secteur Étant Appelé à S'Émouvoir...; released in 1978 and selling few copies, the album nevertheless included his first semi-hit, "La Fille du Coupeur de Joint" (which was to become a cult classic). The Thiéfaine-Carbonare collaboration continued with the release of two further studio records, 1979's Autorisation de Délirer and 1980's De l'Amour, de l'Art et du Cochon. His 1981 record, Dernieres Balises: Avant Mutation, made with the help of longtime friend Claude Mairet, exposed Thiéfaine's darker side, while his live sets were increasingly warmly welcomed by his growing audience.

The Thiéfaine-Mairet collaboration continued with 1982's Soleil Cherche Futur, an album that gained Thiéfaine his second gold record after Dernieres Balises: Avant Mutation, along with some radio airplay. From 1984 to 1995, Thiéfaine alternated studio recordings (Alambic/Sortie-Sud, Météo Für Nada, Eros Über Alles, Chroniques Bluesymentales, Fragments d'Hébétude) with tours and numerous live albums (1986, 1988, 1995), then sticking to his newfound style, more devoted to synth pop and rock.

In 1996 and 1998, he released two new sets of material like two parts of a diptych,Tentation du Bonheur and Le Bonheur de la Tentation. After 2001's Defloration 13, 2005's Scandale Mélancolique saw Thiéfaine collaborate with famous young artists like Cali and J.P. Nataf, stepping out somewhat uncharacteristically with his most visible comeback to date. In 2007, a Scandale Mélancolique tour DVD was released and released the compilation Sequels in 2009. After a four year hiatus he released his sixteenth studio album Supplement de Mensonges in 2011.

Is it because my crazed or cloudy eyes
hewn from stained glass1
and rusted by beer2
are losing their usual vision?
Or maybe it's her sweet
small animal scent
that stews my dreams3
and burns my nerves with sparks

Is it the last glimmers of dusk4
interspersed with blue ambulance lights5
that release a call to love
in my head eroded by silence?
Or is it these so frail breasts
under her basketball jacket,
her female jaguar smile
in my blade on a pole6's eye?

(chorus:)
The new girl, the cutie newbie7
at desk 1028
plays on the hazy fire in her eyes.
As I cast a surrepticious lurid glance at her
through my cloud of weed smoke
I wonder if I might
be bluntly playing in her hand.

Is it their sweetest water lilies9
her roses smelling of old empires10
or her lotuses with owl leaves11
that come and plague my desires?
Is it their birds migrating
through the tangle of her hair,
(like) suns over her heart's chakra12
that pounce on my wishes keyboard?

(chorus)

Is it the visions of the crack13
between the lilac lips of her melancholy14
that drive my mast upward
and blow into my reddish15 sail?
Is it their chloroform fingers
on her little split beaver
that meow16 perfunctorily at midnight
on the forbidden fruits stall

(chorus)
la la la la la...

1. Thiéfaine has indeed beautiful pale green eyes
2. My best bet for "flower of pack". Thiéfaine loves to elaborate on his intimate relationship with various psychotropic substances
3. "put my dreams into a steam room"
4. a metaphor for old age
5. ... and sickness
6. A "débroussailleuse" is an electric weed cutter. I did my best to find an English analog (from "bell on a pole") :)
7. "bleu" means "newbie", "greenhorn" and "petite" clearly implies cuteness here. The verse basically says the same thing twice for aesthetic reasons. I tried to render that in English too
8. no idea what if anything that might allude to
9. Thiéfaine has already used water lilies as a metaphor for eyes in another song. Still I don't really know what virtues he associates with these particular flowers :)
10. my best guess is that he refers to her cheek
11. He got me lost there. Hands maybe?
12. If you say so, Hubert...
13. Thiéfaine is without a doubt refering to her vulva and his penis in the whole verse, again with more than less unusual metaphors
14. "spleen" is unambiguous in French, unlike in English
15. A very dated and unusual color name Thiéfaine seems rather fond of. Pretty adequate for your average penis head though :)
16. And now we get meowing chloroform fingers... Where it is going to end, I shudder to think!

Author's comments:
H.F. Thiéfaine is well known for cryptic lyrics full of extravagant metaphors. For those desperate to decypher them, my opinion is that these songs are best grasped as collections of surreal images colliding with each other. Details don't matter as much as the global picture. I suppose a bit of weed might help too.

Georges Bizet - Les pêcheurs de perles / Je crois entendre encore - 1863 - Classical Music

Wikipédia :

Les pêcheurs de perles (The Pearl Fishers) is an opera in three acts by the French composer Georges Bizet, to a libretto by Eugène Cormon and Michel Carré. It was first performed on 30 September 1863 at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris, and was given 18 performances in its initial run. Set in ancient times on the island of Ceylon, the opera tells the story of how two men's vow of eternal friendship is threatened by their love for the same woman, whose own dilemma is the conflict between secular love and her sacred oath as a priestess. The friendship duet "Au fond du temple saint", generally known as "The Pearl Fishers Duet", is one of the best-known numbers in Western opera.

At the time of the premiere, Bizet was 25 years old and had yet to establish himself in the Parisian musical world. The commission to write Les pêcheurs arose from his standing as a former winner of the prestigious Prix de Rome. Despite a good reception by the public, press reactions to the work were generally hostile and dismissive, although other composers, notably Hector Berlioz, found considerable merit in the music. The opera was not revived in Bizet's lifetime, but from 1886 onwards it was performed with some regularity in Europe and North America, and from the mid-20th century has entered the repertory of opera houses worldwide. Because the autograph score was lost, post-1886 productions were based on amended versions of the score that contained significant departures from the original. Since the 1970s, efforts have been made to reconstruct the score in accordance with Bizet's intentions.

Modern critical opinion has been kinder than that of Bizet's day. Commentators describe the quality of the music as uneven and at times unoriginal, but acknowledge the opera as a work of promise in which Bizet's gifts for melody and evocative instrumentation are clearly evident. They have identified clear foreshadowings of the composer's genius which would culminate, 10 years later, in Carmen. Since 1950 the work has been recorded on numerous occasions, in both the amended and original versions

Original text:

Je crois entendre encore,
Caché sous les palmiers,
Sa voix tendre et sonore
Comme un chant de ramier!
O nuit enchanteresse!
Divin ravissement!
O souvenir charmant!
Folle ivresse! doux rêve!

Aux clartés des étoiles,
Je crois encore la voir,
Entr'ouvrir ses longs voiles
Aux vents tièdes du soir!
O nuit enchanteresse!
Charmant souvenir!

Translation:

I think I'm still hearing
Hidden under the palm trees
Her tender and sound voice
Like the song of a woodpigeon
O enchanted night
Divine rapture
O charming souvenir
Crazy intoxication! Sweet dream!

In the clearness of the stars
I think I'm still seeing her
Opening her long veils
To the warm winds of the evening
O enchanted night
Divine rapture
O charming souvenir
Crazy intoxication! Sweet dream!

Noir Désir - Le vent nous portera - 2001

Wikipédia :

"Le vent nous portera" (translated as "The wind will carry us") is a song by French band Noir Désir from their 2001 album des Visages des Figures. It was released as the first single from the album and reached number one for four weeks in a row in the Italian Singles Charts, as well as number three in the French charts and number seven in the Belgian Record Charts. French artist Manu Chao collaborated on the song and played guitar.

Artist Biography by John Bush (AllMusic)
French alternative band Noir Désir formed in the mid-'80s, comprised of vocalist/guitarist Bertrand Cantat, guitarist Serge Teyssot-Gay, bassist Frédéric Vidalenc, and drummer Denis Barthe. The group's first EP, Ou Veux-Tu Que J'Regarde, was released in 1987. Two years later, Noir Désir released their debut full-length, Veuillez Rendre l'Âme (A Qui Elle Appartient). By second album Du Ciment Sous les Plaines (1990), the band's harder, more punk-inspired elements began to come to the fore, and the progression remained on 1992's Tostaky. After the live double LP Dies Irae, Noir Désir broke out with 1996's 666667 Club. The band continued throughout the early 2000s, releasing albums every couple years. In 2003, lead singer Bertrand Cantat was charged in the death of his girlfriend, actress Marie Trintignant, who died -- on August 1 that year -- of head injuries after being punched by Cantat in a domestic dispute. Cantat was convicted of manslaughter and incarcerated for four years.

Je n'ai pas peur de la route
Faudrait voir, faut qu'on y goûte
Des méandres au creux des reins
Et tout ira bien là
Le vent nous portera

Ton message à la Grande Ourse
Et la trajectoire de la course
Un instantané de velours
Même s'il ne sert à rien va
Le vent l'emportera
Tout disparaîtra mais
Le vent nous portera

La caresse et la mitraille
Et cette plaie qui nous tiraille
Le palais des autres jours
D'hier et demain
Le vent les portera

Génétique en bandoulière
Des chromosomes dans l'atmosphère
Des taxis pour les galaxies
Et mon tapis volant dis ?
Le vent l'emportera
Tout disparaîtra mais
Le vent nous portera

Ce parfum de nos années mortes
Ce qui peut frapper à ta porte
Infinité de destins
On en pose un et qu'est-ce qu'on en retient?
Le vent l'emportera

Pendant que la marée monte
Et que chacun refait ses comptes
J'emmène au creux de mon ombre
Des poussières de toi
Le vent les portera
Tout disparaîtra mais
Le vent nous portera

I'm not scared of the road
We should see, must taste
From meander in the hollow of your breast
And there everything will be OK
The wind will carry us

Your message to Ursa Major ******
And the trajectory of your race
An instant of velvet
Even if it's not useful though
The wind will take it away
Everything will disappear but
The wind will carry us

The caress and the grapeshot
And that wound that tears us appart
The palace of everyday
From yesterday and tomorow
The wind will carry them

The genetic in shoulder-belt
Chromosom in the atmosphere
Taxis for galaxies
And my flying carpet says ?
The wind will take it away
Everything will disappear but
The wind will carry us

This perfume of our dead years
What can knock at your door
Infinity of destinies
We lay some but what do we retain?
The wind will take it away

During the tide rises
And everyone is doing its accounts
I take in the hollow of your shadow
Dusts of you
The wind will carry them
Everything will disappear but
The wind will carry us

Sébastien Tellier - Cochon Ville - 2012

Artist Biography by Bryan Thomas (AllMusic)

Sébastien Tellier is a multifaceted instrumentalist/singer from Paris, France's 17th Arrondissement, an elongated arts-and-culture-rich territory located near the Arc de Triomphe and the Champs Élysées. After Tellier's "Fantino," a forlorn and beautiful pop confection, appeared on the Source label's 1999 Source Material various-artists compilation, it caught the ear of fellow labelmates Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel, better known as Air. The duo and their management team eventually signed Tellier to their own Record Makers imprint. Tellier recorded the tracks for his debut album, L'Incroyable Vérité (The Unbelievable Truth), between September 1999 and March 2000, playing most of the instruments and producing the sessions. L'Incroyable Vérité was released in June 2001.

His next record didn't appear until 2005. Politics was mixed by Philippe Zdar of Cassius and featured a guest spot by drummer Tony Allen of Fela fame. The following year Tellier re-recorded a batch of his songs acoustically and released them under the title Sessions (though in the U.K. it was retitled Universe and included pieces from Tellier's soundtrack for the film Narco). For his next record, Sexuality, Tellier signed up Daft Punk's Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo as producer and ended up with a more slickly electronic sound than heard on his previous outings. The first single from the record, "Divine," was chosen as France's entry in the 2008 Eurovision contest. Though he didn't win, his appearance and the controversy surrounding it (many French commentators felt that the English lyrics of the song meant it wasn't "French" enough to represent the nation) boosted his profile around the world.

In 2010 Tellier released an album of remixes of songs from Sexuality titled Sexuality Remix. He returned with new material in 2012 with My God Is Blue, a spiritually minded set of songs that featured a collaboration with de Homem-Christo on the title track. The following year saw the release of Confection, a collection of romantic instrumentals similar to his earliest albums.

Lyrics :
Prosterne toi!
Danse!
Rêve!

Come to us
I could be good
Come to us
Enjoy the blue
So, be with us
And feel the sound
Come to us
Up off the ground
So, be with us
I could be yours
Come to us
Followers’ fool
So, be with us [x4]
So, baby, your money is following
An eternal blue

Danse!
Rêve!

Romain, i've never answered in your topic but I just want to say that I'm glad you're doing it just as much as I'm following Blanco's choices! Interesting picks you've made, not all songs are favourite (nor did I know about all of them before you posted them) but definitely worth checking out! Keep up the good work! :music-listening:

Pierre, if you want, you can put songs you like too (and Nassim, and Nicolas and everybody).

I just want to put songs not very well known, and the more various possible, old and new.

Can I ask you the songs you have discovered?

Yeah of course! Here's the total songs I never listened to (or I don't remember having heard):

- Les Rita Mitsouko, "Les Amants" (I might have already heard this one before the thread, but I had forgotten)
- Brigitte Fontaine & Noir Désir, "Bis Baby Boum"
- Jeanne Moreau, "India Song" (almost 100% sure I heard this one before the thread, but same remark as the Rita)
- Boby Lapointe, "Méli-Mélodie" (I heard several Lapointe songs, and loved all of them, but this one passed under my radar)
- Richard Gotainer, "La Ballade de l'obsédé"
- Georges Bizet, "Je crois entendre encore"
- Hubert-Félix Thiéfaine, "Guichet 102"
- Sébastien Tellier, "Cochon-ville"

Gotainer, Fontaine and Thiéfaine are all artists that gravitate close to my favourite genres of music, but I have yet to explore deeply (I'm not sure Gotainer has done lots of lost classics, but a few of his songs that I've heard are so well-written that I believe he might have hidden treasures).

Brassens & Patachou - Maman, papa - 1952

Artist Biography by Steve Huey (AllMusic)

One of French pop's most poetic songwriters, Georges Brassens, was also a highly acclaimed and much-beloved performer in his own right. Not only a brilliant manipulator of language and a feted poet in his own right, Brassens was also renowned for his subversive streak, satirizing religion, class, social conformity, and moral hypocrisy with a wicked glee. Yet beneath that surface was a compassionate concern for his fellow man, particularly the disadvantaged and desperate. His personal politics were forged during the Nazi occupation, and while his views on freedom bordered on anarchism, his songs expressed those convictions more subtly than those of his contemporary, Léo Ferré. Though he was a skilled songwriter, Brassens had little formal musical training, and he generally kept things uncomplicated -- simple melodies and spare accompaniment from a bass and second guitar. Along with Jacques Brel, he became one of the most unique voices on the French cabaret circuit, and exerted a tremendous influence on many other singers and songwriters of the postwar era. His poetry and lyrics are still studied as part of France's standard educational curriculum.

Georges Brassens was born in the small Mediterranean town of Sète, France, on October 22, 1921. His deeply religious mother encouraged him to play the mandolin, and taught him some of the Italian folk songs she'd grown up with; intellectually, however, Brassens wound up taking after his staunchly anti-religion father. Around age 15, Brassens met Alphonse Bonnafé, the literature teacher who first introduced him to poetry (and would later write the first Brassens biography in 1963). Brassens soon spent his free time writing poetry and song lyrics, the latter of which he typically set to popular melodies of the time. He also formed a small musical group called Jazz, which played local functions with Brassens as the drummer. Unfortunately, Brassens was expelled from school in 1939 after inadvertently getting mixed up in a jewel theft on campus. He first went to work for his father's masonry business, then went to Paris in 1940 to live with his aunt and work at the Renault car factory. In the meantime, he learned piano and wrote some of his first original compositions.

When Nazi troops arrived in Paris that summer, Brassens returned to Sète for a few months, but found it difficult to remain there. He was back in Paris by year's end, and despite the Nazi occupation, he managed to publish two short poetry collections in 1942. In 1943, Brassens was conscripted into the S.T.O., a mandatory work service program that forced him to go to Germany; there he met Pierre Onténiente, a fellow Frenchman who would become his lifelong friend and (in his successful years) private secretary. After a year in the S.T.O., Brassens returned to Paris on a two-week leave; rather than go back to Germany, he went into hiding at the home of a couple, Jeanne and Marcel Planche, whom he would later immortalize in song. Without much else to occupy him, Brassens spent his days composing songs and writing music, eventually teaching himself the guitar based on his prior experience with the mandolin.

In 1946, after the war had ended, Brassens published the first of a series of articles in the anarchist journal Le Libertaire. The following year, he also published his first novel, La Lune Écoute Aux Portes, and met Joha Heiman, the woman he would love -- and write about -- for the remainder of his life (oddly, they never married or even cohabited, as Brassens continued to live with the Planches until 1966). Brassens wrote much of his finest early work during the next few years, but found it difficult to place his material with anyone on the Parisian cabaret circuit. His luck started to change in 1951 when he met singer Jacques Grello, who helped him find performers for his songs; however, none proved especially popular with audiences at first.

In early 1952, Brassens auditioned a selection of his material for female cabaret star Patachou, giving a late-night performance that dazzled the small audience present. Though Brassens had never considered himself a singer, Patachou convinced him to try his hand at performing himself. A bass player present at the audition, Pierre Nicolas, quickly joined Brassens in support, and would serve in that capacity for the remainder of the singer's career. Brassens was an immediate hit on the cabaret circuit with both audiences and critics, and with Patachou's help, he met Polydor exec Jacques Canetti, and landed a record deal. His first single, "Le Gorille," was released later in 1952, and stirred up controversy with its strong anti-death penalty stance; in fact, it was banned from French radio until 1955.

In 1953, Brassens released his first LP, La Mauvaise Réputation, and played his first major concert at the Bobino Theatre, to which he would return often in the years to come; he also published a second novel, La Tour des Miracles. He won the prestigious Grand Prix du Disque de l'Academie Charles Cros in 1954 for his EP Le Parapluie, and spent much of the year touring Europe and northern Africa. He released several more LPs over the remainder of the '50s, during which time chronic kidney ailments began to affect his health, resulting in periodic hospitalizations. Nonetheless, he continued to tour regularly, and made his film debut in 1956's Portes des Lilas; he also set some of his friend Paul Fort's poetry to music.

Brassens' early-'60s LPs included strong works like Le Pornographe, Le Mécréant, and Les Trompettes de la Renommée. In 1964, he wrote the hit theme "Les Copains d'Abord" for the film Les Copains, and issued an album of the same name. His prolific writing pace of the '50s slowed considerably afterward, due in part to health problems and personal tragedies (both his parents and the Planches had passed away by the end of the decade). These experiences informed his increasingly morbid lyrical outlook, typified by his 1966 LP Supplique pour Être Enterré à la Plage. However, the remainder of the '60s was not all unkind to Brassens; he was awarded the Grand Prix de Poésie de l'Academie Française (the highest national poetry award) in 1967, and took part in a celebrated three-way radio interview with Jacques Brel and Léo Ferré in 1969. Also in 1969, he returned with the new album La Religieuse, which featured his new second guitarist, Joel Favreau, the third musician to hold that chair (the first two were Victor Apicella and Barthelemy Rosso).
Brassens spent the early '70s working on several film soundtracks, and performing several well-received concert series at the Bobino Theatre; he also issued a new album, Fernande, in 1972. Weakened by his kidney problems, he embarked on his final tour in 1973. He issued one further LP, Don Juan, in 1976, and gave a series of farewell concerts in early 1977 at the Bobino. Brassens would return to the studio on several other occasions as a star guest for others' recording sessions, but by 1980, his kidney problems had worsened into cancer. He passed away on October 29, 1981, in the village of Saint-Gely-du-Fesc, at his doctor's home, and was buried nearby in his hometown of Sète.

Lyrics :

Maman, maman, maman, maman.

Papa, papa, papa, papa.

Maman, papa, en faisant cette chanson,
Maman, papa, je r'deviens petit garçon,
Et, grâce à cet artifice,
Soudain je comprends
Le prix de vos sacrifices,
Mes parents.
Maman, papa, maman, papa.

Mommy, Mommy, while creating this song,
Mommy, Mommy, I become a little boy again,
So I'm smart in class
And, to make you happy,
I get the best grades,
What you want,
Mommy, Mommy, instead of my crazy games, I'd rather,
Mommy, Mommy, stay in your lap,
And, saying not a word, hear your charming songs,
Mommy, Mommy, Mommy, Mommy.

Daddy, Daddy, while creating this song,
Daddy, Daddy, I become a little boy again,
And I hear you beneath the storm
Drawing on all your humour
To give courage once again
To our heavy hearts.
Daddy, Daddy, between us there never was,
Daddy, Daddy, tenderness or soft words,
Nonetheless we loved each other, even though we never said it aloud,
Daddy, Daddy, Daddy, Daddy.

Mommy, Daddy, while creating this song,
Mommy, Daddy, I become a little boy again,
And, thanks to this trick,
Suddenly I understand
The price of your sacrifices,
My parents.
Mommy, Daddy, I will always regret,
Mommy, Daddy, having made you cry
During those times when our hearts didn't understand each other yet,
Mommy, Daddy, Mommy, Daddy.

Thank you Pierre. For Gotainer, it's all my childhood. He have for me some "classics", I really love his fantasy world and how each songs are really mini story.

Tomorrow, I will put another song by him for illustrate that.

P.S. : quelle-est ta meilleure découverte jusque là ?

Well, a favourite discovery, I had several notable... I loved Tellier's "Cochon ville" because I usually love electronic music, I've been floored (as usual, to tell the truth) by Boby Lapointe's songwriting on "Méli-mélodie". I liked "Guichet 102", there's a good melody to it, but I feel like the song could have been constructed better, a bridge here and there could have helped.

I liked Gaston Ouvrard's "Je ne suis pas bien portant" too, for sentimental reasons essentially (a very great song, still, although the ending might sound repetitive to a foreigner who can't appreciate the plays on words and assonances in that long suite), as one of the comics I read the most when I was a child, "QRN sur Bretzelburg" in the Spirou & Fantasio series, features a scene where the song plays on the radio, which entails a funny gag in the context. :D

For Gotainer, chose promise, chose due :

Richard Gotainer - Le Combat De Rock - 1989

Lyrics :

(gong)

(very pretty)
Mais lorsque Marylou déboule sur un cha-cha,
C'est elle la plus sympa (very very sympa)

Ouééérrrr !
Vous êtes une bande de ploucs,
Et votre chanson elle pue !
Dégagez, faces de rat,
Avant qu'on vous chie d'ssus !

Stoooop ! (gong gong gong)

Allez jouer dehors !
Allez jouer dehors !
Dehors !
Allez jouer dehors !
Dehooooors !

(Dans la gueule !) (Dans la gueule ! Dans la gueule !…)

(gong)

(tchou tchou tchou tchou-tchou-tchou)

Quand je vois Marylin avec son houla-hop,
L'ambiance est au be-bop ! (houla, be-bop)
Mais lorsque Marylou arrive à mobylette,
Mon cœur est à la fête ! (dring dring pouet pouet pouet)

Ta gueule ! Mais ta gueuuuuule !
Ta gueule face de rat !
Vos gueules les vers de terre !
Vous êtes que des pédés,
Retournez chez vos mères !

M'sieur ! M'sieur ! M'sieur ! M'sieur ! M'sieur !
Ah, oui !
Marylin ou Marylou (whouu-tou-tou-tou-tou-tou-tou)
Sont dans un baba, (ba)
Sont dans un toto, (to-to-to)

Roaaaaahh !

(gong gong gong gong)

(aux chiottes ! aux chiottes !…)

(gong)

(prout) (pouet)

Grrrrr !

Qu'est-ce que t'as t'as t'as…
Qu'est-ce que t'as t'as t'as t'as t'as t'as t'as t'as
Qu'est-ce que t'as t'as t'as…

(fiiizzz) (pouet pouet) (triiit) (pouet pouet pouet…)
(gong gong gong gong gong gong)

(gong)

To whom I pull an arm?
To whom I hit a knee
And the one who's gonna eat his guitar, where is he?
where is he, this dwarf?
where is he, this idiot?
To whom I'm gonna swallow his microphone?

one, two, three, one!
When I see Marylin (Monroe I guess) does the hully-gully (a dance I guess)
That's her the prettiest girl (very pretty)
But when Marylou does with a cha-cha
That's her the coolest girl (very very cool)

Yeeeaaah!
You are a bunch of hicks
And your song it sticks !
Get out, rat faces
before we piss you off !

Stop! (gong gong gong)
Geentlemen please let's be ok
No trap please, no trap let's go!

(gong)

And one, two, three!
I'm very unhappy but you gotta do a choice ...
I'm hesitating between the both girl, the pretty girl and the cool girl ...

...
To make them understand
Should I hit with my fists in their eyes?
Should I explain it to them or should I hit them?
Bunch of stinking jackals
Scarpings, pig vomits!

Grab your bins and get playing outside door!
get playing outside door!
get playing outside door!

(in the fucking mouth!....)

...

When I see Marylin with her hula-hop
the atmosphere is at be-bop (hula, be-bop)
But when Marylou comes with her motorcycle
My heart is at a party (onomatopoeia of motorcyle and party)

Fuck off! But Fuck off!
Fuck off rat face!
Fuck off worm!
you are just assholes
Go back to your mother!

Sir! sir! sir! sir! sir!
we can't mess it, that's on the rules
either with business or with parents (sir! sir! sir!)
Don't push in the nettles ! (Don't push granny)
softer you're nice (would you shut your mouth?)
Let's resume gentlemen please
but by the way where , where are we had?
Oh, well!
Marylin or Marylou ...
are in trouble
are in idiot

roarrrr
you are just assholes
your song stinks
your music stinks ass, go do it at the wc!
go do it at the wc!
go do it at the wc!
at the wc!
go do it at the wc!
at the wc!

...

When I see Marilyn sleeping in babydoll
That's her my only silly girl (go ahead my dick)

...
your chick is ugly
and she's bad to sleep with
she had little tits
she had hair on knees

...
But when Marylou cooks me spaghetti
I'm also glad (glad on the bed)

...
To fuck this ugly
we must have an appetite!

...
I'm gonna hit your fucking face
I'm gonna hit your balls

...
Gentlemen, we stay right
Not in the balls, the rules are so
Not in the balls, that's absolutely forbidden

hey you it's going to be a while since that get tickles
...

hey say it, what's going on? (doesn't it fine in your head?)
What did you say? What did you have? (it's gonna be your party!)
...

Marylin or Marylou...
are in trouble
are in idiot
are in a boat
Who fell in the water?

This last song by Gotainer is crazy too :D The guy with whom he's "fighting" is the singer from Trust, right?

Looks like it comes from a movie, never heard of this one.

Les Négresses Vertes - Voilà L'été - 1988

Artist Biography by Craig Harris (AllMusic)

Taking a punk-like approach to a mixture of Latin, rai, and folk music, Les Negresses Vertes create an infectuous dance music. Initially comprised of family members, friends and lovers, Les Negresses Vertes has come a long way since their earliest performances. Although most members of the band didn't play an instrument until coming together in late-1987, the grown has continued to evolve into a very exciting ensemble.

Les Negresses Vertes' climb to world-wide success has not come easy. On January 22, 1993, the group's lyricist, Noel Rota, best known as "Helno" and "Helno Rota De Lourcqua," died while attempting to overcome a serious drug addiction. Rota's twin brother, Ritter Thierry, continues to perform with Haine Et Ses Amours. Since Rota's death, guitarist/vocalist Stefane Mellion and accordionist/vocalist Matthias Canavese, also known as Canavese and Matias, have assumed his role in the front line of Les Negresses Vertes. A native of Algeria, Mellion has lived in Paris since the early-1980s. During the six years before the band was formed, he spent his summers working in his parent 's fishing net business and played with bands in Paris the rest of the year. The youngest member of Les Negresses Vertes, Canavese inherited much of his talent from his father, a labourer who became an entertainment promoter at the age of forty and now directs a circus school. Although he trained as an acrobat, he was forced to seek other avenues of expression following an accident. Other members of Les Negresses Vertes include guitarist, bassist and vocalist, Jean-Marie Paulus, trumpet and tombone player and vocalist Abraham Sirinix and pianist, guitarist and vocalist Jo Roz.

Lyrics :

That is the summer x4

That is the summer,I perceive the sun
The clouds spin and the sky clears
ve in my head who is buzzing
The bees
I hear roar pleasures of the life
This is the return of loves
Those warm our ears
It's so hot
That desires drive us
This is the refreshed happines of a cocktail
The girls are beautiful and the gods are delighted

At last the summer x4

At last the summer
But there has more money
The whole Paris turns into a phobia
The subway sweats,everything becomes purulent
In his shoes,the fool passenger
Ten toes which are expressed violently
There is more of friends neigbors go
The summer of Paris, this is rather relaxing
We dream beach
And the Seine is pretty

Always the summer,it is not superflous
It is too hot,the sun stunned me
Rillettes under the arms,I move down in the street
I think to these assholes who sweat their
in the noon
All these torch-asses who will cook in their juice
All these drowned people, the sea which rubbish
And on the roads the danger that kills you
Really the autumn,I feel you all embittered

Always the summer

That is the summer,I perceive the sun
The clouds spin and the sky clears
ve in my head who is buzzing
The bees
I hear roar pleasures of the life
This is the return of loves
Those warm our ears
It's so hot
That desires drive us
This is the refreshed happines of a cocktail
The girls are beautiful
And the gods are delighted

That's the summer
At last the summer
Always the summer
Still the summer

Je t'aime de folie pure,
Je ne sais comment te l'avouer.
Ce qui viens d'y passer,
Je ne saurais l'oublier
(2x)

I love you with madness,
I do not know how you confess.
What just happened,
I can not forget
(2x)

I loved to madness,
I no longer remember it.
Time passes, overnight,
And in your head I do not longer exist.

You loved me with madness,
I no longer remember me
Time passes, overnight,
And in your head I do not longer exist.

Brigitte Bardot - Harley Davidson - 1967

Wikipedia :
Brigitte Anne-Marie Bardot (/ˈbrɪdʒɨt bɑrˈdoʊ/; French: [bʁiʒit baʁˈdo]; born 28 September 1934 in Paris) is a French former actress, singer and fashion model, now an animal rights activist. She was one of the best known sex symbols of the 1950s and 1960s. Starting in 1969, Bardot's features became the official face of Marianne (who had previously been anonymous) to represent the liberty of France.

Bardot was an aspiring sex dancer in early life. She started her acting career in 1952 and, after appearing in 16 obscure films, became world-famous in 1957 with the release of the controversial film And God Created Woman. She later starred in Jean-Luc Godard's 1963 film Le Mépris. Bardot was nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Foreign Actress for her role in Louis Malle's 1965 film Viva Maria!. Bardot caught the attention of French intellectuals. She was the subject of Simone de Beauvoir's 1959 essay, The Lolita Syndrome, which described Bardot as a "locomotive of women's history" and built upon existentialist themes to declare her the first and most liberated woman of post-war France.

Bardot retired from the entertainment industry in 1973. During her career in show business, she starred in 47 films, performed in several musical shows, and recorded over 60 songs.

This song was written by Serge Gainsbourg for a 50mn TV show in colors, the same show where Bonnie & Clyde and Comic Strip were created:

Lyrics :
Je n'ai besoin de personne --- I don't need anyone
En Harley Davidson --- on a Harley Davidson
Je n'reconnais plus personne --- I don't know anybody
En Harley Davidson --- on a Harley Davidson
J'appuie sur le starter, --- I push the starter
Et voici que je quitte la terre, --- and now I leave the ground
J'irai p't'être au Paradis, --- I may go to paradise
Mais dans un train d'enfer. --- but like in an inferno

Je n'ai besoin de personne --- I don't need anyone
En Harley Davidson --- on a Harley Davidson
Je n'reconnais plus personne --- I don't know anybody
En Harley Davidson --- on a Harley Davidson
Et si je meurs demain --- and if I die tomorrow
C'est que tel était mon destin --- this may be my destiny
Je tiens bien moins à la vie --- my life is less important
Qu'à mon terrible engin. --- than my engine

Je n'ai besoin de personne --- I don't need anyone
En Harley Davidson --- on a Harley Davidson
Je n'reconnais plus personne --- I don't know anybody
En Harley Davidson --- on a Harley Davidson
Quand je sens en chemin --- when I feel being on my way
Les trépidations de ma machine, --- the vibrations of my machine
Il me monte des désirs --- the desire mounts
Dans le creux de mes reins --- in my back

Je n'ai besoin de personne --- I don't know anybody
En Harley Davidson --- on a Harley Davidson
Je n'reconnais plus personne --- I don't know anybody
En Harley Davidson --- on a Harley Davidson
Je vais à plus de cent, --- I am going more than one hundred
Et je me sens à feu et à sang, --- and I feel fire and blood
Que m'importe de mourir --- what do I care for dying
Les cheveux dans le vent ! --- the hair in the wind !
Que m'importe de mourir --- what do I care for dying
Les cheveux dans le vent ! --- the hair in the wind !
