Dick Rivers - Faire un pont - 1976
Rock'N'roll / Country

Album: Mississipi River's

Artist Biography by Jon O'Brien (Allmusic)

Alongside the likes of Johnny Hallyday and Eddy Mitchell, Dick Rivers is widely regarded as one of the first musicians to introduce France to the sounds of rock & roll.
Born Herve Fornieri in Nice in 1946, he developed a love of Johnny Cash, Gene Vincent, and Elvis Presley from a young age, naming himself after the latter's character in the 1957 film Loving You.
After recording over 100 songs with the influential outfit Les Chats Sauvages, he went on to pursue a solo career in the early '60s, scoring hits with the likes of "Baby John," "Tu N'es Plus La," and "Rien Que Toi," before heading to Alabama in 1967 to work with some of America's biggest blues musicians on one of his most acclaimed records, Dick Rivers Story.
Rivers became more experimental during the equally prolific but less successful '70s-'80s phase of his career, turning his hand to comedy (L'Interrogation), country-rock (Mississippi Rivers), and English-language material (Dick 'n' Roll), while also publishing an autobiography, landing a presenting role on Radio Monte Carlo, and briefly re-forming with Les Chats Sauvages for their 20th anniversary.
His career was rejuvenated in the '90s thanks to the critically lauded Plein Soleil, several well-received national tours, and a first acting role in Jean-Pierre Mocky's La Candide Madame Duff, and the 2000s proved to be just as productive thanks to a stage debut in Jean Genet's Les Paravents, a successful greatest-hits album, and 2006's self-titled collaborative effort with -M-, Benjamin Biolay, and Francis Cabrel. In 2011, he celebrated the 50th year of his eventful career with the album Mister D.

Refrain 3x

Nuttea - La weed brûle - 1996
Ragga

Album : Retour aux sources

Wikipédia (google Translate)
Daddy Nuttea or simply Nuttea, whose real name is Olivier Lara, is a French ragga artist born on December 26, 1968 in Guadeloupe and arrived in Paris at the age of six. It started in the late 1980s with the High Fight International sound system, which included Polino (selector), TipTop (operator) and DJ and singers: Tonton David, Féfé Typical and Don Lickshot.

He met his first success in 1997 at the same time as his compatriot and friend Pierpoljak with the song Agitateur broadcast on certain radios and the French cover of the song of Bob Marley entitled Natural Mystic whose video was broadcast on M6. In 2000, he enjoyed an important success with his album Un signe du temps (with the single, "Elle te rend dingue"), sold for 700,000 copies.
He contributes to several pieces of the IAM band: the song of A Short Scream in the Night on the album L'École du micro d'argent, and The 25th image on La Haine, inspired by the film. He continues his collaboration with the Marseille rap community with a featuring of Akhenaton, member of IAM, on the title N (Haine) extracted from the album Un signe du temps.

Since the beginning of the 1990s, he sings in each of his performances a revival of the title of Harry Belafonte Jamaica Farewell. The title exists in different forms on each of its albums as well.

He also appeared in the soundtrack of the film Taxi 2 alongside Disiz the plague, Faf Larage, Jalane, Taïro and Vasquez (lead singer of Less du Neuf) forming the collective One shot, released in March 2000. He also collaborates with the English group UB40, on the title Cover up released in 2001. He tries a return in 2004 with the album Urban Voodoo, which will be a failure. After 2004, his career will become more confidential.

In 2013, he released the album Mister Reggae Music.

In 2017, it appears on the title Terre arride, present on the album Révolution of IAM.

Refrain (x2)

The weed is burning

Chorus: (x2)
The weed is burning and the grail is loaded.
Don't give me anything to sniff from my nose.
Give me the Thai variety, the one making me high.
I make the tricks on the mike under the effect of my sensei.

Give me fire, man, so that I inhale my bluff.
Give me the weed, man, so that I load up my grail.
I prefer the weed at vibration of the pastis
the fate of which I leave up to the cops.
Excuse me if I'm loaded by the bluff.
That's not of these made in Paris.
I like all the green plants, even a cannabis salad.
When I go to buy some leaves, I buy packages of them.
the sets of ten leaves.

Chorus: (x2)
The weed is burning and the grail is loaded.
Don't give me anything to sniff from my nose.
Give me the Thai variety, the one making me high.
I make my tricks on the mike under the effect...

There are many dead youngsters that have smoked so much tobacco,
but I don't know any dead one to have smoked Ganja.
My personal doctor is called Rizzla.
If you smoke a specific that drives you insane,
that simply means that weed is not suitable for you.
I don't promote the herb and that has to do with me.
But the legislation -good god!- says we don't need it.
I incite noone to smoke Ganja.
But if it is forbidden, we should also forbid tobacco.
The decriminalization is the solution we seek for,
that could incite me to burn some Ganja.

Chorus: (x2)
The weed is burning and the grail is loaded.
Don't give me anything to sniff from my nose.
Give me the Thai variety, the one making me high.
I make the tricks on the mike under the effect of my sensei.

The alcohol is on the table and the world blows off.
A couple offenses and the binge partying gets in.
I'm still happy that no one was carrying weapons.
When the weed comes, everybody goes mild.
A sniff, a beat and the whole night is in.
That's the tense, that can't be surpassed.

A package of ten leaves.

Chorus: (x4)
The weed is burning and the grail is loaded.
Don't give me anything to sniff from my nose.
Give me the Thai variety, the one making me high.
I make the tricks on the mike under the effect of my sensei.

Phoenix - Lisztomania - 2009
Indie pop / Pop rock

Album: Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix (RYM: 3,49/5)

Artist Biography by Diana Potts (Allmusic)

Mixing pop, disco, and rock into a stylish blend, Phoenix grew out of the garage band vocalist Thomas Mars, bassist Deck d'Arcy, and guitarist Christian Mazzalai played in while growing up in the suburbs of Paris. Mazzalai's older brother Branco joined the band on guitar when his band Darlin' disbanded in 1995.

The group got its start playing on the French bar circuit, doing Hank Williams and Prince covers to drunken audiences. Two years later, the band took on the name Phoenix and pressed 500 copies of a single on its own label, Ghettoblaster. The A-side was a punk rock song and the other a chugging Krautrocker, hinting at their eclectic tastes. Shortly afterward, they were signed to the Paris-based Source Records. Phoenix became well acquainted with labelmates Air when they performed as their backing band on several U.K. TV appearances. The result of the electronic exposure was a single called "Heatwave," which was very similar in approach to '70s disco.

United, the group's debut album, appeared in 2000 on Astralwerks and was recorded over two months. The album featured guest appearances from friends and family, including Thomas Bangalter (Daft Punk), Philippe Zdar (Cassius), and d'Arcy's mother's choral society on the track "Funky Squaredance." From that point, they issued Alphabetical (2004), It's Never Been Like That (2006), and their mainstream breakthrough, the critically acclaimed Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix (2009). Part of the extended break between the third and fourth albums was due to Mars becoming a father (with his partner, director Sofia Coppola). Soon after finishing the Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix tour, the band reconvened in Adam Yauch's studio Oscilloscope Laboratories in late 2010 and embarked on some experimental recording sessions. They continued in Paris the following year and completed recording in 2012 with the help of co-producer Phillipe Zdar, then mixed the songs on the console used to mix Michael Jackson's Thriller. The results, Bankrupt!, appeared in April 2013. The band began work on its sixth album in 2014, taking a break to appear in A Very Murray Christmas, a Netflix holiday special directed by Coppola. Largely recorded in an old opera house refurbished into a museum, concert hall, and tech incubator, 2017's Ti Amo channeled the joyousness of Italian discos and summertime into a defiant response to the political and social struggles of the late 2010s.

AllMusic Review by Andy Kellman
Realigned with Philippe Zdar, the half of Cassius who mixed United, Phoenix make adjustments on the polarizing characteristics of their second and third albums -- the pokey and occasionally listless Alphabetical, the jagged and tune-deficient It's Never Been Like That -- with some of the most direct and enjoyable songs they've made to date. The two opening songs, the bopping "Lisztomania" and the buzzing "1901," are so immediate and prone to habitual play that the remainder of the album is bound to be neglected. There is plenty to like beyond that point, including "Lasso," which niftily alternates between a tangled rhythm and tight-spiral riffing, and the labyrinthine "Pt. 1" of "Love Like a Sunset," which serves the same purpose as the extended instrumental passages on Roxy Music's Avalon, at least until its rousing conclusion and shift into "Pt. 2." Beyond containing the band's best, most efficient songwriting, the album also stands apart from the first three studio albums by projecting a cool punch that is unforced. Vocalist Thomas Mars, more bright-eyed and youthful than ever, also sounds more a part of these songs, rather than coming across as a protruding element that clashes against the instruments. Maybe they've just hit their stride.

Les Rats - Je m'emmerde - 1991
Punk / Rock

Wiki (Google translate)
Les Rats is a French punk rock band from Montereau-Fault-Yonne, Seine-et-Marne. He was originally composed of Jess (guitar), Patrice (vocals and guitar), Jean-Michel (drums) and Laurent (bass). This group is in the 1980s, one of the leading groups of French punk rock.
La banlieue sud devenait grise
Ça tombait bien ma mine aussi
J'avais le look tour de Pise
Penché qu'j'étais sur mes ennuis

Moi j'avais soif de connaissances
Mais Nicolas était fermé
Je prenais mon mal en patience
Ils auraient pus m'laisser les clefs

Je pensais à des tas de trucs
On envoie des keums sur la lune
Et moi je n'ai droit qu'á un tuc
Pour espéré avoir d'la thune

A vingt balles le pack de canettes
Et vu qu'il m'en faut deux par jour
Quand tu vois c'que l'état me jette

J'passe ma jeunesse à dev'nir vieux

I'm bored to death

The southern suburb was turning grey,
coincidentally so did my mood.
I was blind as a bat1 since I was
looking so hard into my problems.

I was thirsty for knowledge
but the wine shop2 was closed.
I was suffering in silence,
they could have left me the keys.

I was thinking of many things.
They send guys on the moon,
and yet I have nothing but a state-helped job3
to try and grab some dough.

Since a six-pack costs a fiver
and I need a couple each day,
considering the alms the government gives me,
you can see why I got so skinny.

I'm bored to death in this blasted suburb
full of unemployed persons and civil servants.
I spend my youth getting old,
I spend all my time doing nothing.

I should have been born a pensioner
and spend my day stuffing myself.
But with the lump I got in my throat4,
you bet I'm going to have fun.

I'm bored to death! (x9)

1. the original says "I had a Pisa tower look since I was leaning on my problems", "se pencher sur un problème" means "try to solve a problem"
2. "Nicolas" is a huge wine shop franchise
3. The "Travail d'utilité collective" (community help job) system was an attempt to solve growing unemployment problems in the 80's
4. the original pun is on "boules" (petanque/lump) : "spend my day playing balls, but with the ones I got in my throat..."

Went to see 'Sage Femme' (The Midwife), starring Catherine Deneuve, which I quite enjoyed, especially the scene featuring this song:
Been checking out some of his other songs since then - I admit I hadn't heard of him before, but he looks to have been a household name in France, although he hasn't come up in this thread yet: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serge_Reggiani

His song, 'Sarah' is ranked #148 for 1967 on AM, but I prefer this one.

Lyrics (NB: The translation is my own, and so will probably have several mistakes).

Les hommes avaient perdu le goût
De vivre, et se foutaient de tout
Leurs mères, leurs frangins, leurs nanas
Pour eux c´était qu´du cinéma
Le ciel redevenait sauvage,
Le béton bouffait l´paysage... d'alors

The men have lost their joy
In life, and damn it all
Their mothers, brothers, nans
All is mere trivia
The sky is wild again
The stone eats up the plain... and now

Les loups, ououh! ououououh!
Les loups étaient loin de Paris
En Croatie, en Germanie
Les loups étaient loin de Paris
J´aimais ton rire, charmante Elvire
Les loups étaient loin de Paris.

The wolves, ououh! ououououh!
The wolves were far from Paris
In Croatia, in Germany
The wolves were far from Paris
I loved your laugh, charming Elvire
The wolves were far from Paris

But now see fifty paths
One after one at night, ooh
In which a flare ripples
Among the battle dead
In which fear stalks the streets
The wolves are here now the night has come, oh yes

Les loups, ououh! ououououh!
Les loups ont regardé vers Paris
De Croatie, de Germanie
Les loups ont regardé vers Paris
Cessez de rire, charmante Elvire
Les loups regardent vers Paris.

The wolves, ououh! ououououh!
The wolves are heading for Paris
From Croatia, from Germany
The wolves are heading for Paris
Laugh no more, charming Elvire
The wolves are heading for Paris.

Et v´là qu´il fit un rude hiver
Cent congestions en fait divers
Volets clos, on claquait des dents
Même dans les beaux arrondissements
Et personne n´osait plus le soir
Affronter la neige des boulevards... alors

And then came a cruel winter
Diseases of all kinds
Shutters closed, teeth chattering
Even in the wealthiest mansions
And no-one dared, during the night
To face the snow of the boulevards, ho ho

Des loups ououh! ououououh!
Des loups sont entrés dans Paris
L´un par Issy, l´autre par Ivry
Deux loups sont entrés dans Paris
Cessez de rire, charmante Elvire
Deux loups sont entrés dans Paris.

The wolves, ououh! ououououh!
The wolves have come to Paris
One in Issy, one in Ivry
Two wolves have come to Paris
Laugh no more, charming Elvire
Two wolves have come to Paris.

The first had just one eye
An old dog from Krivoi
He brings his ten bitches
To the tiny Grenelle square
And feeds his hundred cubs
On the children of Passy, oh

Cent loups, ououh! ououououh!
Cent loups sont entrés dans Paris
Soit par Issy, soit par Ivry
Cent loups sont entrés dans Paris
Cessez de rire, charmante Elvire
Cent loups sont entrés dans Paris.

A hundred wolves, ououh! ououououh!
A hundred wolves have come to Paris
Among Issy, among Ivry,
A hundred wolves have come to Paris.
Laugh no more, charming Elvire
A hundred wolves have come to Paris.

Le deuxième n´avait que trois pattes
C´était un loup gris des Carpates
Qu´on appelait Carêm´-Prenant
Il fit faire gras à ses enfants
Et leur offrit six ministères
Et tous les gardiens des fourrières... alors

The second only had three paws
A grey from the Carpathians
Who they called Carem-Prenant
He found food for his children
And offered them six ministers
And all the guardians for pounds... oh

Les loups ououh! ououououh!
Les loups ont envahi Paris
Soit par Issy, soit par Ivry
Les loups ont envahi Paris
Cessez de rire, charmante Elvire
Les loups ont envahi Paris.

The wolves ououh! ououououh!
The wolves have come into Paris
Among Issy, among Ivry,
The wolves have come into Paris
Laugh no more, charming Elvire
The wolves have come into Paris.

Attracted by the smell of blood
They came in hundreds and thousands
To dance and celebrate and feast
In the ruined land of France.
Until the people had come back
Back to love and fraternity!

Les loups ououh! ououououh!
Les loups sont sortis de Paris
Soit par Issy, soit par Ivry
Les loups sont sortis de Paris
J'aime ton rire, charmante Elvire
Les loups sont sortis de Paris
J´aime ton rire, charmante Elvire
Les loups sont sortis de Paris...

The wolves ououh! ououououh!
The wolves have departed from Paris
Not in Issy, not in Ivry
The wolves have departed from Paris
I love your laugh, charming Elvire
The wolves have departed from Paris
I love your laugh, charming Elvire
The wolves have departed from Paris.

Thanks Duncan ! Indeed, Serge Reggiani was one of the great star of the Chanson area (and cinema). It was going to be my first artist of the next page (where I put the most important artists) :-)

The song you choose is the most well-knowned by him and it's my favorite (here is the translation by LyricsTranslate if you want to "correct" some words:

Deux - Game and performance - 1983
Minimal synth / synthpop

Minimal Wave Records
Their music can be described as minimal synth with stripped down rhythm compositions and suitably cold duets. Their influences are a perfect blend of Kraftwerk and French synthpop. Between 1983 and 1992, they released a cassette and several rare singles : Felicita / Game & Performance and Europe / Paris / Orly. They also appeared on the V/A BIPP LP (2006) and most recently on V/A The Minimal Wave Tapes: Vol 1 LP
You can be someone
If you grow with me
Your simple Song
Is something else
You simulated
Your love for me
You can be someone
If you grow with me

You just need
Game and Performance
Your Life is a prospecting Company
Business Man
Yet you kill the Boss
Computer programs shadows in the NightYou can be someone
If you grow with me
Your simple Song
Is something else
You simulated
Your love for me
You can be someone
If you grow with me

Jean-Pierre Alarcen - Premier mouvement - 1979
Symphonic prog / progressive rock

Album: Tableau n°1 (RYM: 3.6/5)

Wiki (google translate)
Jean-Pierre Alarcen (born 1944), is a French guitarist and composer.

In 1966, Alarcen created the Mod's with Alain Legovic (Alain Chamfort). Accompanying in the same period Jacques Dutronc, along with Alain Legovic, Michel Palay, Gerard Kawczinsky, Alarcen and Legovic left him two years later. Creates the group "The system Crapuchik" ("As Far as I Remember" (1969)).

Alarcen later joined Eden Rose and formed Sandrose in 1971 with drummer Michel Jullien, bassist Christian Clairefond, keyboardist Henri Garella and singer Rose Podwojny. Besides several years of work with François Béranger who contributed to: "Le Monde Bouge" (1974), "L'Alternative" (1975), "En Public" (1977) and "Participe Présent" Has made some collaborations with Geoffrey Oryema and Renaud

AllMusic Review by Dave Sleger
This is a compilation of French guitarist Jean-Pierre Alarcen's first two independently released solo albums. His first album, Jean-Pierre Alarcen, is an unabashed jazz-rock fusion effort reflective of that genre's major players of the mid- to late '70s. The Latin rhythms and fluidity of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, the force of Billy Cobham, the intensity of Weather Report, and the eclecticism if Return to Forever are all referenced, but not necessarily mimicked. A fine guitarist, Alarcen also graciously defers to his electric keyboardists for melodic support regularly. A brief album that clocks in at roughly 30 minutes, his debut is complemented nicely by his lengthy follow-up, Tableau No.1, a moody and more varied piece of work that owes as much to jazz-rock fusion as the impressionist artists of the canvas and the romantic classical composers. In one moment, Alarcen's powerful playing suggests Allan Holdsworth, while the next combines Steve Hillage's post-Motivation Radio spacy meanderings with Phil Keaggy's gentle sense of melody. The challenging and schizophrenic nature of this recording requires patience from the listener. The ethereal and almost subconscious passages can lull the listener to sleep, or,at the very least, into a deepened sense of relaxation and in an instant jar the listener to rigid attention with an unannounced electric guitar blast. That is not to say Alarcen's music is without structure. He sometimes takes unconventional turns in his pieces, but (especially on Tableau No.1) he completes them in anthemic fashion, thus making better sense of the sometimes-quizzical music preceding it.

Félix Marten - T'es moche - 1964

Wikipédia (Google Translate)
Félix Marten born Félix Paul Gabriel Marten is a French actor, director and singer, born on October 29, 1919 in Remagen (Germany) and died on November 20, 1992 in Saint-Cloud (France) of a pulmonary embolism.

His father, of Finnish origin, is a horticulturist in Germany. His mother is a gypsy. To escape Nazism, he came to France with his parents and took refuge in the Paris region. Obliged to work young, he is made several trades: first engaged as a salesman at the age of 15 by Les Galeries Lafayette, he will also be a salesman in a real estate agency, fireman, docker, boxer, carpet dealer.

With his physique t it comes to him the desire to be actor. He enrolled in the dramatic courses of Charles Dullin on the advice of friends. The war breaks out and is required at the STO in Germany. On his return he aspires to become a singer of varieties. He started in cabarets in Paris, imitating Fernandel, then in the provinces and even abroad in Indochina. Edith Piaf notices and advises him for his future career. She hires him to Bobino and the Olympia and predicts a great cinematographic career to him. He has several artist names: Pierre Alma, then Jean de Vix, then Fredo, before taking his real name in 19581.

After having filmed a multitude of films with actresses like Martine Carol, Michèle Morgan or Magali Noël, he is forgotten because his very brief apparitions will keep him away from his job and his career will suffer.

He reappeared on stage for the last time in 1989 at the Casino de Paris for a final singing tour.

He will reappear one last time at the cinema in a Scopitone by Claude Lelouch integrated in the film There are Days and Moons, for the song La Rigolade which was filmed in 1961.

He rests in a cemetery in Cachan.
T’es moche, t’es moche
Mais je t’aime
T’es triste, sinistre
Mais je t’aime
T’es sotte, très sotte
Faut s’y faire
T’es cloche, très cloche
Mais sincère

Plus je te vois, plus je me dis
T’as rien, rien

Tu ronronnes.
Tu me griffes
Je me rebiffe
Et je pardonne
Tu n’es que l’effet d’un hasard
T’as rien
Couche-à-couche
Et des mots d’amour
Plein la bouche

T’es moche, je suis moche
Mais je t’aime

T’es cloche, je suis cloche
Mais tu m’aimes

T’as rien, j’ai rien
Et c’est bête
Y'a que pour l’amour
Que t’es chouette
Que c’est chouette.

You're ugly, you're ugly
But I love you
You're sad, sinister
But I love you
You're dumb, way dumb
Gotta get used to it
You're stupid, way stupid
But sincere

The more I see you, the more I think
You've got nothing, nothing
for us to get up at night.
You have on the life
a vague idea
Would have to be crazy to hit on you

You're ugly, you're ugly
But I love you

You're stupid, so stupid
But I love you

You splat
You're feline
You purr
You scratch me
I disobey
and I apologize
You're just the result of chance
You have nothing
Nothing to catch one's eye. However, here we are.
Layered on one another
And our mouths
full of sweet nothings.

You're ugly, I am ugly
But I love you

You're stupid, way stupid
But you love me

You got nothing, I got nothing
And it's dumb
That's all you need for love
You're so great
It's so great.

Les Discrets is a French shoegaze/post-rock project created and led by Fursy Teyssier as a "platform gathering music and art." Teyssier was the sole member of the band until 2009, when he was joined by Audrey Hadorn and Winterhalter. Les Discrets have released three studio albums: Septembre et Ses Dernières Pensées in March 2010, Ariettes oubliées... in February 2012, and Prédateurs in April 2017; additionally, a live album entitled Live at Roadburn was issued in June 2015.

Les Discrets was formed in 2003 as a musical side-project beside Phest, of which Fursy Teyssier was a member, as a way for Fursy, who is also an illustrator, to express concepts similar to those found within his art. Fellow French musicians, Winterhalter and Audrey Hadorn, soon joined the line-up.
Les Discrets signed a five-album contract with German record label Prophecy Productions in April, 2009.
The band released a split EP with Alcest in December of the same year, and went on to release their first full-length album, Septembre et Ses Dernières Pensées, in March, 2010.
According to the German Sonic Seducer magazine, the album features dark, romantic music that cannot be attributed to any single genre. On July 18, 2010, Fursy posted an update on the official site stating that composition for a second album had been completed, and that the studio had already been booked for its recording.

Both Fursy and Winterhalter were members of the now-disbanded Amesoeurs, and Fursy has also been a live member of Alcest until June 2010, for which Winterhalter is a full-time drummer.

In 2013, Teyssier announced that, in a common decision, both Winterhalter and live bassist Neige were leaving the band to focus more on their main band, Alcest.

The band's third studio album, Prédateurs, was released on Bandcamp on April 21, 2017.

The band considers its name to mean "Those who keep silent", although "The Discreet Ones" would be more an accurate translation.

Quoi!

The Blame

What! You have my life and my whole face
And my body is silent
And that shivers from gift and use

That you have done!

What! Your greedy mouth breathed my mouth
And I was in your hands
The one who lives and sighs and that we touch
The sweet belly and breasts!

You saw my fear, my trouble and my weakness
What am I saying? And my desire
And it's redness, it's crazyness and it's lowness
Facing pleasure.

And you felt under my smooth chest
My heart beating heavily,
And this anxiety, Alas! With delight
That I felt from you!

You saw my fear, my trouble and my weakness
What am I saying? And my desire
And it's redness, it's crazyness and it's lowness
For the pleasure.
For the pleasure.

You have got my body, my heart and my face
You know, prideful
That it's on your fearsome and mighty picture
That I close my eyes
You watched me annihilated and naked from head to toe
Begging the returned dawn
To stop the sun.

Michel Legrand - Les demoiselles de Rochefort - Thème d'Andy - 1967 - OST
Soudtracks / Jazz

RYM : 3.90/5

Wikipédia:
Michel Legrand (born 24 February 1932) is a French musical composer, arranger, conductor, and jazz pianist. Legrand is a prolific composer, having written over 200 film and television scores, in addition to many memorable songs. He is best known for his often haunting, jazz-tinged film music. His celebrated scores for the films of French New Wave director Jacques Demy, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) and The Young Girls of Rochefort (1967), earned Legrand his first Academy Award nominations. For The Thomas Crown Affair (1968) and its title song, "The Windmills of Your Mind", Legrand won his first Oscar.

AllMusic soundtrack Review by Stephen Cook [-]
With the follow-up to his soundtrack for The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Michel Legrand puts a sophisticated and subtle spin on another of Jacques Demy's unabashed tributes to the golden age of MGM musicals.
Although not as lyrical or rich as its predecessor, The Young Girls of Rochefort manages to provide more thrills as Legrand's prevalent jazz arrangements effectively mirror Demy's sunny excavation of the town of Rochefort; gone are the melancholy themes of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg's lost love and cloudy skies in favor of a splashy tone better suited to The Young Girls of Rochefort's innocuous romance and outdoor production numbers.
Legrand is even able to match Demy's nostalgic postwar leanings as he successfully evokes and melds two musical staples of the era--big band swing and string laden vocal numbers. Throughout the score, in fact, Legrand blends jazz, strings and vocals into seamless and compact pieces; "Le Pont Transbordeur"'s swirling strings envelope and whisk a jazz piano trio into double time with no compromise to the swinging tempo and on "Arrive de Comionneurs," a seeming cacophony of dense reeds, muscular brass, layered vocal harmonies and dizzying string passages merge harmoniously under the taut arrangement. (Legrand would take this musical synthesis to even greater heights a few years later on his soundtrack to The Thomas Crown Affair)
His contrasting knack for understatement is also well represented here by the yearningly plaintive "Chanson de Maxence," the melody of which becomes a major motif for longing throughout the score. Michel Legrand offers up a variety of pleasures on The Young Girls of Rochefort--namely great songs--and in the process, elegantly brings Jacques Demy's musical to life.

Ciao!

G, A, F, G, B, A, A, G
Well, but it is a G minor
G, A, F, G, A, E, G, F, E, F, C, F

I'm sorry miss, but I'm in love

You're lucky

I do what I can

I'm in Rochefort to see again a friend of mine
A certain Simon Dame and at two steps from here
I meet a girl and I become mad for her
The girl disappeared, but love has chosen me

I had to pass through two continents
It had at the end to happen this incredible coincidence
To transform my life and give a sense to it.
I had to come back to France.

Ciao!

Agar Agar - Prettiest Virgin - 2016

Artefactmagazin.com
The new French duo who goes by the name of Agar Agar met at the Beaux Arts school of Cergy-Pontoise in the suburbs of Paris.

Or, as the story goes, they met at catechism, tried a few jam sessions on Te Deum and decided to give music a go. Amen.

Their first EP Cardan came out in September and is something halfway between pop and techno – an explosion of 80s hard synth bass lines brought by Armand, topped by Clara’s deep, dark, yet sensual voice, embodying the duo’s strong personality and offbeat sense of humour.

When we asked what their influences were, particularly regarding their artistic background, the duo explained: “Clara comes from a family of apes so her influence is pretty varied, like trees, bananas, dried fruit, and Armand quite likes paintings but not their frames.”

The EP opens with the mystical and haunting seven-minute long I’m The Guy on which Clara pleads and longs “Give me goosebumps, I see you in the dark and I’m on fire”, and grows into a more fast-paced, raw and almost angry-sounding sequence, in particular on Cuidado, Peligro, Eclipse and on Symbiose.

Prettiest Virgin, the second track of the EP, was released earlier this year and is the story of, well, a virgin at a party pining for a boy named Dan.

Artefact asked the duo to explain the story behind the making of this tune: “A bass line, teen movies and a few drinks.”
The 80s-infused music video for the track is indeed reminiscent of the flicks we used to watch in secret at the tender age of 12 forming our sexual awakening, but also of early teenage parties where, like the protagonist, we found ourselves “craving” that cute Dan we couldn’t muster the courage to approach.

The duo’s refusal to use their native French throughout the EP is due to the fact that Clara has lived in the US before and always writes music in Shakespeare’s tongue.

“We tried French but we’d rather avoid it, it didn’t work well.”

A few words of Spanish spoken in a thick English accent can be heard on Cuidado, Peligro, Eclipse.

When asked why, the duo says that “Spanish is a language that has damn cojones”. Fair enough.

Lastly, we had to ask why they chose to name their project after an ooey gooey substance, sometimes used to make jelly.

“Armand breeds ants. He feeds them with agar-agar and grenadine syrup and then he pets them.”

The pair never ceases to surprise us, so we are, without a doubt, going to see what they have up their sleeves for their first UK show in London very soon.

Hadouk Trio - Le matin du Faune - 2016 - Jazz
World jazz / Ethno-Jazz

Album : Le cuinquième fruit

Artist Biography by Jason Ankeny (Allmusic)
France's Hadouk Trio channeled musical elements from across the globe to create a uniquely mystical and evocative sound somewhere between jazz and world pop.
The Hadouk Trio was led by Paris-born multi-instrumentalist Didier Malherbe, previously known for co-founding with Soft Machine alum Daevid Allen the famed psych-prog outfit Gong.
Malherbe remained with Gong for close to a decade, shepherding the band through myriad personnel and creative changes before exiting in 1978. Throughout his travels Malherbe collected exotic instruments from the far corners of the earth, and after a series of short-lived experimental rock ensembles and a 1980 solo jazz-rock LP, Bloom, in 1994 he embraced world music by forming Hadouk with multi-instrumentalist Loy Ehrlich, a specialist in the hajouj, the African three-stringed bass that, along with the Armenian double-reed instrument the doudouk, gave the project its name.
Mahlerbe and Ehrlich initially recorded and toured as a duo, issuing their self-titled debut LP in 1999. With the follow-up, Shamanimal, their ranks swelled to a trio with the addition of American percussionist Steve Shehan, a veteran with stints behind Bob Dylan and Paul Simon on his résumé.
Hadouk Now followed in 2002, and two years later the Hadouk Trio issued its first concert LP, Live at Fip. The 2006 release Utopies includes three songs featuring the American trumpeter Jon Hassell.

Marcel François Paul Landowski (18 February 1915 – 23 December 1999) was a French composer, biographer and arts administrator.

Born at Pont-l'Abbé, Finistère, Brittany, he was the son of French sculptor Paul Landowski and great-grandson of the composer Henri Vieuxtemps.

As an infant he showed early musical promise, and studied piano under Marguerite Long. He entered the Paris Conservatoire in 1935; in addition one of his teachers was Pierre Monteux.

In 1966, France's Cultural Affairs minister André Malraux appointed Landowski as the ministry's director of music, a controversial appointment made in the teeth of opposition from the then ascendant modernists, led by Pierre Boulez.

One of his first acts was the establishment, in 1967, of the Orchestre de Paris, appointing Charles Munch as its first director. He also championed the establishment of regional orchestras at a time when interest in them appeared to be waning. This was part of a so-called "ten-year plan for music", instituted with the intention of establishing an opera company and conservatoire in each of the Regions of France. The new Orchestre de Paris was also built on the model intended to be followed by planned regional orchestras. In this endeavour Landowski worked with local authorities, especially those in the regional centres such as Bordeaux, Lille, Lyon, Strasbourg and Toulouse, who signed agreements under which the French State would finance a third of each company or ensemble's operating budget. Landowski also oversaw modernisation of regional concert halls and theatres.

In 1975 Landowski was appointed Inspector General of Music, and was Director of Cultural Affairs of the City of Paris from 1977 to 1979. He succeeded Emmanuel Bondeville as President of the Maurice Ravel Foundation and was in turn succeeded by Manuel Rosenthal.

He died in hospital in Paris in 1999, aged 84.

Compositions
Landowski eschewed the avant-garde approaches to music of his contemporaries, preferring a more conservative style. His greatest musical influence was Arthur Honegger. His entire output includes five symphonies, several concertos (notably two for piano and one each for bassoon, for cello, for flute, for trumpet, for trombone, for violin), operas as well as a Mass and bears testimony to Honegger's impact. Landowski went on to write a biography of his mentor.

Yvette Guilbert - Le fiacre - 1888
Chanson / Cabaret

Recording: 1934
Writer : Xanrof

Wikipédia:
Yvette Guilbert (French pronunciation: [ivɛt gilbɛʁ]; 20 January 1865 – 3 February 1944) was a French cabaret singer and actress of the Belle Époque.

Born in Paris into a poor family as Emma Laure Esther Guilbert, Guilbert began singing as a child but at age sixteen worked as a model at the Printemps department store in Paris. She was discovered by a journalist. She took acting and diction lessons, which enabled her in 1886 to appear on stage at several smaller venues. Guilbert debuted at the Variette Theatre in 1888. She eventually sang at the popular Eldorado club, then at the Jardin de Paris before headlining in Montmartre at the Moulin Rouge in 1890. The English painter William Rothenstein described this performance in his first volume of memoirs:

One evening Lautrec came up to the rue Ravignan to tell us about a new singer, a friend of Xanrof, who was to appear at the Moulin Rouge for the first time... We went; a young girl appeared, of virginal aspect, slender, pale, without rouge. Her songs were not virginal – on the contrary; but the frequenters of the Moulin were not easily frightened; they stared bewildered at this novel association of innocence with Xanrof's horrific double entente; stared, stayed and broke into delighted applause.[1]

For her act, she was usually dressed in bright yellow with long black gloves and stood almost perfectly still, gesturing with her long arms as she sang. An innovator, she favored monologue-like "patter songs" (as they came to be called) and was often billed as a "diseuse" or "sayer". The lyrics (some of them her own) were raunchy; their subjects were tragedy, lost love, and the Parisian poverty from which she had come. During the 1890s she appeared regularly alongside another star of the time, Kam-Hill, often singing songs by Tarride.[2] Taking her cue from the new cabaret performances, Guilbert broke and rewrote all the rules of music-hall with her audacious lyrics, and the audiences loved her. She was noted in France, England, and the United States at the beginning of the twentieth century for her songs and imitations of the common people of France.

She was a favorite subject of artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, who made many portraits and caricatures of Guilbert and dedicated his second album of sketches to her. Sigmund Freud attended performances, including one in Vienna, and called her a favorite singer. George Bernard Shaw wrote a review highlighting her novelty.[citation needed] The reviews were not all positive. The playwright and songwriter Maurice Lefèvre said of her,

Let's enter the Chanson Moderne. There she is! Long leech, sexless! She crawls, creeps with hissings, leaving behind the moiré trail of her drool... On both sides of the boneless body hang, like pitiful wrecks, tentacles in funereal gloves. For she will, indeed, lead the burial of our Latin race. Complete negation of our genius... Poor little Chanson, faithful mirror in which men reflect themselves, are you responsible for their hideousness?"

In 1895 she married Dr M. Schiller. Guilbert made successful tours of England and Germany, and the United States in 1895–1896. She performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Even in her fifties, her name still had drawing power and she appeared in several silent films (including a star turn in F. W. Murnau's Faust). She also appeared in talkies, including a role with friend, Sacha Guitry. Her recordings for La Voix de son maître include the famous "Le Fiacre" as well as some of her own compositions such as "Madame Arthur". She accompanied herself on piano for some numbers.

She once gave a performance for the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, at a private party on the French Riviera. Hostesses vied to have her at their parties.

In later years, Guilbert turned to writing about the Belle Époque and in 1902 two of her novels (La Vedette and Les Demi-vieilles) were published. In the 1920s there appeared her instructional book L'art de chanter une chanson (How to Sing a Song). She also conducted schools for young girls in New York and Paris. One of her pupils in Paris was the American soprano and folk song fieldworker Loraine Wyman.

Guilbert became a respected authority on her country's medieval folklore and on 9 July 1932 was awarded the Legion of Honor as the Ambassadress of French Song.

Yvette Guilbert died in 1944, aged 79, in Aix-en-Provence. She was interred in the Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.

Twenty years later her biography, That Was Yvette: The Biography of a Great Diseuse by Bettina Knapp and Myra Chipman (New York: Holt, Rinehart & Winston, 1964) was released.

Un fiacre allait, trottinant
Cahin, Ca-ha,
Hu', dia ! Hop là !
Un fiacre allait, trottinant,
Jaune avec un cocher blanc
Derrièr' les stores baissés,
Cahin, Ca-ha,
Hu', dia ! Hop là !
Derrièr' les stores baissés,
On entendit des baisers
Puis un' voix disant : « Léon ! »
Cahin, Ca-ha,
Hu', dia ! Hop là !
Puis un' voix disant : « Léon ! »
Pour causer ôt' ton lorgon ! »
Un vieux monsieur qui passait
Cahin, Ca-ha,
Hu', dia ! Hop là !
Un vieux monsieur qui passait
S'écri' : « Mais on dirait qu'c'est
Ma femme avec un quidam ! »
Cahin, Ca-ha,
Hu', dia ! Hop là !
Ma femme avec un quidam ! »
I' s'lanc' sur le macadam
Mais i'gliss' su' l'sol mouillé,
Cahin, Ca-ha,
Hu', dia ! Hop là !
Mais i'gliss' su' l'sol mouillé,
Crac. Il est escrabouillé
Du fiacre un' dam' sort et dit :
Cahin, Ca-ha,
Hu', dia ! Hop là !
Du fiacre un' dam' sort et dit :
« Chouett' Léon, c'est mon mari !
Y'a plus besoin d'nous cacher
Cahin, Ca-ha,
Hu', dia ! Hop là !
Donn' donc cent sous au cocher ! »
Y'a plus besoin d'nous cacher

A fiacre campered
and hobbled about.
Giddy up ! Gee up !
A fiacre campered about,
it was yellow with a white driver.
Behind the drawn curtains,
(hobbling about,
giddy up, gee up)
Behind the drawn curtains
kisses could be heard,
then a voice saying "Léon!"
(hobbling about
giddy up, gee up)
Then a voice saying "Léon!
remove your pince-nez before talking business!"
An old gent passing by
(...
...)
...
cries out "Why, it looks like
my wife with some man!"
(...
...)
...
He rushes on the asphalt,
but slips on the wet pavement.
(...
...)
...
Splash! He's properly squished.
A lady comes out of the fiacre and says:
(...
...)
...
"Great, Léon, that's my husband!
No need to hide now.
(...
...)
Let's give a good tip to the cabman!"
No need to hide now.

Maître Gims - Sapé comme jamais - 2015
Hip-Hop / Rap

Album: Mon cœur avait raison (RYM: 3,26/5)

Wikipédia:

Gandhi Djuna (born 6 May 1986), better known by his stage name Maître Gims, is a French rapper and singer. He grew up in and is currently living in France. He is a former member of the hip-hop group Sexion d'Assaut, and has developed a solo career with a major release, his solo album Subliminal and his cousin Mario Kalinovic is also his producer.

Gandhi Djuna, born in Kinshasa (DRC) with his brother, immigrated to France when he was just two years old. Growing up in the 3rd arrondissement of Paris, he later moved to the 9th arrondissement and eventually the 19th arrondissement. Taking the name of Gims, he rapped at college with his friends of Sexion d'Assaut while studying communication and graphical arts. He also worked part-time as a courrier at night.

He recorded his first track with Sexion d'Assaut "Coup 2 Pression" and worked with JR in the Prototype 3015 duo project. He decided to add Maître to his name Gims and also used the pseudonyme "le Fléau" ("the Bane"). He also worked on a number of independent releases, and a mixtape La Terre du Milieu ("Middle-Earth") as part of 3e Prototype after taking Dawala as manager. In 2007, he also worked as producer, wrote instrumental pieces and released his maxi Pour ceux qui dorment les yeux ouverts ("For those who sleep with open eyes"). On the maxi were tracks with Sexion d'Assaut, rapper Koma (from Scred Connexion) and a singer Carole. Continuing to record tracks with Sexion d'Assaut at two Inch'All Star battles, he became a well-known French freestyler. He also took part with 3e Prototype in a new street album called Le Renouveau ("The Rebirth").

In 2011, Maître Gims issued a collaboration with his father Djuna Djanana in a new album of Djanana and in 2012, was the artist for a Comics book called Au cœur du vortex ("In the Heart of the Vortex").

Maître Gims heavily promoted the release of his 2013 album Subliminal on 20 May 2013 as he announced with the video "Welcome to the Wa Part. 4: La Consécration". He also released a series of 6 consecutive releases included unpublished materials called Ceci n'est pas un Clip. On 1 March 2013, Maître Gims released "Meurtre par strangulation" (M.P.S.) as a first pre-release from the Subliminal album. On 15 March 2013, just two weeks later, he released a second track from the album "J'me tire", that topped the SNEP official French Singles Chart. Subliminal was a big commercial success and made it to number 2 in the French albums chart and number 1 in the Belgian French charts. On 2 December 2013, a new edition titled La face cachée was released by Wati B and Jive Records, containing 6 additional tracks in addition to the 18 tracks on the original Subliminal release. He has also started his own record label, MMC (Monstre Marin Corporation).

It breaks down your door, it's the Gestapo
I'll find you, Columbo Meugui
It wants to sell tons à la Gustavo
A coffee without sugar, I open the back door
Yeah hey sweetie, the cash creates beauty
It'll be 6 years since we put combos
I handle the melodramas, Waraoui, Warano
You'll wonder if it's not a conspiracy

[Bridge: Maître Gims] (x2)
Raise your hands, raise your hands
Except the guys dressed in Balmain
Balmain, Balmain*
Aladdin the Harem way

[Pre-chorus: Maître Gims]
Come before midnight (come before midnight)
I'm going to make you live a dream (Make you live a dream)
Move out on the dance floor, as their eyes are falling upon
The clothes that shine like The Thousand And One Nights
Paris is really ma-ma-ma-magic

[Chorus: Maître Gims]
Dressed like never before (never)
Dressed like never before (never)
Dressed like never before (never)
Dressed like never before
Loulou and Boutin (bando)
Loulou and Boutin ('Boutin na' Boutin)
Coco and Chanel (Coco)
Coco and Chanel (Coco Chanel)

[Verse 2: Niska]
The most stupid of stupid
I control the area, apreciate my come up
Careful with your girlfriend, when she saw me she left you
Ferregamo, got the skin of crocodiles on my shoes
I am Congolese, do you see what I mean?
Eh eh, as a Norbat
Maitre Gims coveted me
Charlie Delta localised
Cops are focalised
Dressed like nene, never before
Now, I make them envious
Competition under my feet
Loulou, Zano and Hermes
Louis Vuitton bag, I want the recipe

[Pre-Chorus: Maître Gims]
[Chorus: Maître Gims]

[Outro : Maître Gims]
Kinshasa na Brazza (God bless)
Libreville, Abidjan (God bless)
Yaoundé na Douala (God bless)
Bamako na Dakar (God bless)
Dany Synthé oh (God bless)
Bedjik na Darcy hé (God bless)
Bilou na Dem-dem (God bless)
Djuna Djanana hé (God bless)

[Chorus: Maître Gims]

Complot Bronswick - I know The Power of words - 1984
Rock / Post-punk / Cold Wave

Album: Maïakovsky (RYM: 3.25/5)

ForcedExposure:
Mixing heavy post-punk and cold wave sounds, Maiakowski was written in 1983 as a tribute to the Russian poet of the early 20th century. Along with Norma Loy, Clair Obscur, and End Of Data, Complot Bronswick was one of the best bands of the very fertile French cold wave scene. This reissue is housed in a brand-new sleeve designed by the band's own personal long-time graphic designer, Maurice Chesneau.
Arriving in 1981 on the Rennes scene, Complot Bronswick have never been short of good ideas: alternating music, video and performance, haunted by the shores of dreams and Russian imagery from the '20s, the group created captivating atmospheres. Complot Bronswick changed with a deliberate desire to shatter an image.
Even the notion of them being an elitist band is a misinterpretation for such an open group. In fact, the role of Complot Bronswick was not to create a rigid world but to open up and accept the confrontation of different worlds, generating new emotions.
The human structure of the group fluctuated and there could be anything from two to ten people onstage at any one time. The only real constant was the poetry and emotion given out at each concert, a certain idea of freedom.

Eddy de Pretto - Fête de trop - 2017
Pop / Rap

Tu sais

One party too many

You know,
You know, tonight I've seen all the pearls of pop,
I even overindulged in your homies' absynth.
I rubbed shoulders with rare nymphs, sniffed some snow in advance
in really black hole rooms, without a glint of elegance.
I clenched my pathetic jaws further
and made lovers zealous1, some boys passing by
with whom I tried to get in touch, but who slowly fled
my masquerade, so cold and sullen it was2
So I stuffed my paunch with lively emergencies3
as lively as they were drunk on the dance floor.
I arranged my bandages so that my bleedings
showed a lot less on the silver floor.

That's one party too many !
I went there, was defeated up to a downright fiasco.
That's one party too many !
Look, I'm glistening with glitter dust and reduce myself to KO

You know, tonight I've read in my relaxed body
the tortured manual of this exalted dance.

I even insinuated my tongue in salivating mouths,
in very tiny nooks where only mucous membranes show.
And then I went home, quite empty-handed,
with this tired old look and a craving for more.
I did not find anything definite, except apparently
Exactly, even if tomorrow starts all over again.4

That's one party too many !
I went there, was defeated up to a downright fiasco.
That's one party too many !
Look, I'm glistening with glitter dust and reduce myself to KO

That's one party too many !
I went there, was defeated up to a downright fiasco.
That's one party too many !
Look, I'm glistening with glitter dust and reduce myself to KO
(torso)5

That's one party too many !
I went there, was defeated up to a downright fiasco.
That's one party too many !
Look, I'm glistening with glitter dust and reduce myself to KO

1. the verb "zéler" does not exist, I'm just guessing what he means there
2. I tried to render the convoluted feel of the original. That really means something like "I tried to get in touch with some boys passing by, but my masquerade was so cold and sullen that they slowly fled"
3. I wonder what lively urgencies taste like...
4. that is gibberish, plain and simple
5. If you say so...

Diam's - La boulette - 2006
Hip-Hop

Album: Dans ma bulle (RYM: 1.67/5)

Artist Biography by Jason Ankeny (Allmusic)
One of small handful of women to infiltrate the male-dominated world of French hip-hop, "rappeuse" Diam's nevertheless enjoyed significant commercial and critical success culminating with 2003's award-winning Brut de Femme.
Born Mélanie Georgiades in Nicosia, Cyprus, on July 27, 1980, she spent the majority of her adolescence in the Parisian suburb of Orsay and gravitated to hip-hop as a teen. By 14, she began writing her own songs, adopting the alias Diam's from a dictionary entry defining diamonds in terms of both their opulence and their impenetrability. By 1995 Georgiades was a fixture of the Paris rap circuit, often collaborating with the Instances Glauques collective. In 1997, she befriended rapper Yannick from the Mafia Trece posse, guesting on two tracks on their LP Cosa Nostra and performing on the anti-racism tour "Sachons Dire Non." While working a series of odd jobs, Diam's teamed with composer and producer Black Mozart to record her 1999 debut solo LP, Premier Mandat, issued on the independent label Reel Up. The album earned little attention, but two years later she turned heads with "Suzy," a standout contribution to the compilation Original Bombattack.

Diam's signed to major label EMI in the spring of 2002, but her sophomore LP, Brut de Femme, was shelved due to corporate reshuffling. When the album finally hit retail on the Hostile imprint in mid-2003, it proved a surprise hit, launching the chart-topping single "DJ" and winning the award for Best Rap/Hip Hop Album at the annual Victoires de la Musique honors.
Dans Ma Bulle followed in early 2006, topping the French charts within weeks, and eventually becoming the biggest selling French album of 2006. Its success landed Diam's her own MCM cable show, Télé Diam's, as well as an A&R gig with the legendary U.S. label Motown's French division.

The pressure of fame took its toll on Diam's, and in October 2009 after a battle with depression, she found solace in Islam. That same year, Diam's third album, S.O.S. was released.

Refrain :
Alors ouais, on déconne
Ouais, ouais, on étonne

Refrain (×4)

So yeah, I'm a showoff, yeah yeah I'm screwing around
Nah, nah, it's not school that dictated me my codes
I was told you love rap, here's The Boulette
Pull out the lighters, it's too dark in our heads

So yeah, I'm a showoff, yeah yeah I'm screwing around
Nah, nah, it's not school that dictated me my codes
I was told you love rap, here's The Boulette
Pull out the lighters, pull out the lighters

There's like a taste of hate when I walk in my city
There's like a taste of discomfort when I talk about my life
There's like a taste of bitterness among youngs of the 2000's
There's like a taste of error when I see the suicide rate

Don't ask me what makes them break windows
I'm not the major, I'm just a fledgling artist
Me, I'm just a Boulette
Don't ask me if I have the BAC(1)
I only have rap, but I embark it,
I set it ablaze, I love it cause I embrace it

There's like a taste of an attempted assault
Like a taste of Bertrand Cantat
Like a taste of anthrax during the Entr'acte
There's like a taste of madness-madness among the kids
Like a taste of Boulette-Boulette on the air

{Chorus x2}
So yeah, we're screwing around
Yeah yeah, we amaze
Nah, nah, it's not school that dictated us our codes
Nah nah, "Nah generation"

There's like a taste of rape when I walk in my city
There's like a taste of alcohol in the police departments
There's like a taste of fear among the chicks of the 2000s
There's like a taste of weed in the oxygen we breathe

Don't ask me what makes them bust your balls
I'm not the emergency services, I'm just a little girl getting by on her own
Me, I'm just a Boulette
Don't ask me if I love life, me, I love the rhyme
And I annoy Marine(2) just because it's fun

There's like a taste of bad boys, like a taste of Al Capone
Like a taste of hardcore (hardcore) in the schools
There's like a taste of madness-madness among the kids
Like a taste of Boulette-Boulette on the air

{Chorus x2}

There's like a taste of church in incest and in childhood
There's like a taste of Africa in the coffers of France
There's like a taste of dema-demagogue in the mouth of Sarko(3)
Like a taste of gold diggers near fancy cars
There's like a taste of machete in the rooms of the young
There's like a taste of boom-boom in the heart of my sisters
There's like a taste of "I'm tired of everything that's happening"
There's like a taste of madness, of Boulette who jumps into the crowd

{Chorus x4}

Boulette :
1st meaning: (feminine of boulet) is in the french slang a burden/a heavy charge (in refrence to the small ball of metal that used to be chained to prisoners' feet).
2nd meaning: (small form of boule(ie. ball)) referring to someone a bit chubby.
It used to be the surname of the artist in the district she lived in.
(1): Abbreviation of Baccalauréat: French High school diploma
(2): Marine Le Pen
(3): Nicolas Sarkozy

- 2000 - Electro
House / Electro

Wikipédia:
Grand Popo Football Club are a French electronic music group of a DJ/book-loving television presenter/chat show host and producer/classically-trained pianist who studied at the National Conservatory in Paris, respectively.

The duo apparently adopted their unusual moniker after Ariel Wizman visited the West African village of Grand-Popo in Benin to film a television programme and decided that the community was missing a football club. After studying piano, composition, and electronic music, Nicolas Errèra became involved in theatre and successfully directed short films (winning the Clermont-Ferrand prize in 1991, for his Going to Dieppe Without Seeing the Sea) as well as becoming half of pop duo 2 Source. Wizman, meanwhile, DJed at Colombian parties in Paris. He became renowned for his show on Radio Nova that mixed easy listening, soundtracks, and electronic music. When the show transferred to television, Wizman brought in guests as disparate as Johnny Rotten and German philosophers: fortuitously, his guests also included 2 Source, an invite that rekindled Wizman and Errera's previous friendship.

GPFC's first recording appeared on the Source Lab 3 compilation in 1996, but they did not release their debut, Shampoo Victims, until 2000 (the album was re-released two years later).

Together the duo creates Gallic pop that seems to revere and revile the music of peers such as Daft Punk, Air, and Cassius in equal measure. They dubbed a song that sounded curiously like the former "One More Song on the Market", while "Nothing to Say in a House Song" railed against the duo's perceived vacuousness in house music by (vacuously) repeating the title with no other lyrics. "Shampoo Victims" also included a duo of collaborations with friends/heroes Sparks. Russell and Ron Mael provide both lyrics and vocals on the album's best tracks "La nuit est là" (The Night Is Here) and "Yo quiero mas dinero" (I Want More Money). As if to accentuate this fondness for '70s/'80s pop, the duo also sampled Giorgio Moroder's "Love Fever" on "Each Finger Has an Attitude".

Drinks, finks, football and drugs,
Business suits and newspapers, arguments, work, cable TV.
Laziness, cars, lungs, size, don't you know what girls say
sometimes?
Men are not nice guys, men are not nice guys, men are not
nice guys.

Drinks, finks, football and drugs, business suits and new
specs,
Horses, games, insecurity, laziness, loudness and cable TV.
Men think they know how to have fun, don't you know what
girls say sometimes?
Men are not nice guys, men are not nice guys.
Men are not nice guys, men are not nice guys.

Men are not nice guys, men are not nice guys,
Men are not nice guys.

Amel Bent - Ma philosophie - 2004
R&B / Pop

Album : Un jour d'été (RYM: 2,44/5)

Wikipédia:
Amel Bent (born Amel Bachir, on 21 June 1985 in Paris) is a French R&B and pop singer who gained fame after reaching the semi-finals of season 2 of French TV series Nouvelle Star. She is "Nouvelle Star" best selling artist.

Amel Bent grew up in the French commune of La Courneuve with her Algerian father and Moroccan mother. She has a brother and a sister. Her career jump started after making it to the semi-finals of the reality TV show Nouvelle Star 2, France's version of Pop Idol. Although her performance did not make it to the finals, she was still noticed by some of the show's producers, and would end up making her début album later that year, titled: Un Jour d'été, released in late 2004. The album would sell more than 550,000 copies in France alone, but the success of the album would ultimately be derived from the single, "Ma Philosophie", which would sell at more than 500,000 copies, staying at the No.1 slot, in France, for more than six weeks during and after sales. In 2012, She was one of the contetant during the Third season of Danse avec les stars. She finished in second place with her partner, Christophe Licata.

For her single "je reste" 2011, she co-starred with the actor from Metal Hurlant Chronicles Karl E. Landler.

Un Jour d'été is a 2004 album recorded by French-born singer Amel Bent, released on November 30, 2004. It was her debut album and was successful on the charts (#3 in France), even allowed Bent to gain a Victoire de la Musique in the category 'Revelation of the year'. There were three singles from the albums, all of them being top ten hits in France : "Ma Philosophie", "Le Droit à l'erreur" and "Ne retiens pas tes larmes".

Written by Amel Bent herself in collaboration with French rap singer Diam's, the song has lyrics that reveal the positive sides of women.

The music video deals with the various types of women and shows Amel Bent alternately as a businesswoman, a materialistic woman, a waitress and a daily woman who is with her friends. The lyrics have a quasi-poetic feel to them, as figurative language is sparsely used, such as the metaphor "Je suis l’as qui bat le roi" and the alliteration of the "i" sound in "injures incessantes". "My Philosophy" was named the Victoires de la Musique as 'Original song of the Year'.

The song was covered by Karen Mulder, Corneille, Lorie, Sandrine Kiberlain, Julie Zenatti and Hélène Ségara for Les Enfoirés' album 2006: Le Village des Enfoirés (seventh track).[1] The song has been parodied by Paral & Piped studio, under the title "Ma Seule Envie".

Je n'ai qu'une philosophie
Être acceptée comme je suis
Malgré tout ce qu'on me dit
Je reste le poing levé
Pour le meilleur comme le pire
Je suis métisse mais pas martyr
J'avance le cœur léger
Et toujours le poing levé

Lever la tête, bomber le torse
Sans cesse redoubler d'efforts
La vie ne m'en laisse pas le choix
Je suis l'as qui bat le roi
Malgré nos peines, nos différences
Toutes ces injures incessantes
Moi je lèverai le poing
Encore plus haut, encore plus loin

(refrain)

Qu'on dévisage, qu'on déshabille

(refrain x3)

I have but one philosophy
Being accepted the way I am
In spite of all they tell me
I keep on raising my fist
For better or for worse
I am a mixed-race woman but not a martyr
I move forwards with a light heart
And always raising my fist

Lifting my head, sticking out my chest* -
Always redoubling my efforts
Life doesn't give a choice about that
I am the ace that beats the king
Despite our heartaches, our differences
And all those ceaseless insults
I will raise my fist
Even higher, even farther

(chorus)
I'm not afraid
Of reaching for the moon
Even with the time
I still believe in it wholeheartedly
If I have to, I will make
Sacrifices
I have already done several
And this, always raising my fist

I am not like all those girls
That they ogle at and undress with their eyes
I have a shapely figure and curves -
They are here to warm people's hearts
As a girl from a poor district
I've learnt to be proud
Much more love than misery
Much more heart than wars

I have but one philosophy
Being accepted the way I am
With strength and smile
And raising my fist toward the future
Lifting my head, sticking out my chest -
Always redoubling my efforts
Life doesn't give a choice about that
I am the ace that beats the king

(chorus x3)

Louis Théodore Gouvy - Requiem op.70 - 1874 - Classical

Wikipédia:
Louis Théodore Gouvy (July 3, 1819 – April 21, 1898) was a French composer.

Gouvy was born into a French-speaking family in the village of Goffontaine, in the Sarre, a region on the France-Prussia border (now Saarbrücken-Schafbrücke, Germany). Because this region fell under Prussian control shortly before his birth, Théodore Gouvy could not attain French citizenship until the age of 32. He began piano lessons with a private tutor at the age of eight, and was educated in France—Sarreguemines, then Metz—developing a keen interest in Classical Greek culture and in modern languages—not only German, which he spoke fluently, but English and Italian as well. In 1837 he went to Paris to study law, continuing his piano lessons with a pupil of the pianist and composer Henri Herz (1803–1888) and became friendly with Adolphe Adam. This led to further music studies in Paris and Berlin. Unable to pursue music instruction at the Conservatoire de Paris, he took up private courses.

Gouvy was a man of two cultures, divided between France and Germany, from which he drew his inspiration, his characteristics and his force. While to a certain extent he was known and recognized in his lifetime, he fell into obscurity following his death. Gouvy, drawn toward pure instrumental music as opposed to opera, set himself the unenviable task of becoming a French symphonist. It was unenviable because the French, and especially the Parisians, throughout most of the 19th century were opera-mad and not particularly interested in pure instrumental music. It was this disdain for instrumental music in general which led to Gouvy living the last third of his life almost entirely in Germany where he was much appreciated.

During his lifetime, his compositions, and especially his chamber music, were held in high regard and often performed in those countries (Germany, Austria, England, Scandinavia, and Russia) where chamber music mattered. But in France, he never achieved real acclaim. Gouvy was universally acknowledged for being a master of form and for his deft sense of instrumental timbre. Mendelssohn and Schumann were his models and his music developed along the lines one might have expected of those men had they lived longer. Virtually all of his works show that he was a gifted melodist whose music is a joy to hear.

Musicians of the first rank such as Johannes Brahms, Carl Reinecke, and Joseph Joachim, who were familiar with Gouvy's music, held it in high regard.

Hector Berlioz wrote in the Journal des Débats of April 13, 1851: "[t]hat a musician of the importance of M. Gouvy is still not very well known in Paris, and that so many gnats bother the public with their tenacious buzzing, it is enough to confuse and inflame the naive spirits that still believe in the reason and the justice of our musical manners".

Berlioz's favorable reviews had little effect, and Gouvy's music continued to be neglected until the end of the 20th century. In 1994, his Requiem, with its vigorous Dies iræ, was revived by the Lorraine Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Jacques Houtmann (who recorded a CD of the work, which appeared the K617 label). Stylistically the composition owes something to Mendelssohn, something to Gounod, and something to Verdi, but remains quietly original despite these influences.

Although his work comprises more than two hundred compositions, including 90 opuses published in his lifetime, it largely remains ignored. In particular, he wrote twenty-four compositions for a full orchestra,[1] including nine symphonies, as well as overtures and variations. Chamber music comprises a large portion of Gouvy's work and accounts in particular for four sonatas in duet form, five trios, eleven quartets, seven quintets, an enormous piano repertoire — for two and four hands — and for two pianos, several scores for wind instrument ensembles, as well as many melodies and Lieder. We also know of five great dramatic cantatas (Aslega, Œdipe à Colone, Iphigénie en Tauride, Électre, and Polyxène), two operas (Le Cid and Mateo Falcone) as well as some large religious works, including a Requiem, a Stabat Mater, a Messe brève, and the cantata Golgotha.

Gouvy was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1894 on the death of Anton Rubinstein, and to the König-Preussische Akademie in Berlin in 1895. He died in Leipzig on 21 April 1898.

Carnival in Coal - Don't be happy, worry - 2001
Avant-garde metal / Death metal/ Deathgrind

Album: Fear not (RYM: 3.26/5)

Artist Biography by William York (Allmusic)

The French duo of singer Arno Strobl (aka Alan Thursday Morning) and multi-instrumentalist Axel Wursthorn (aka Karl Zengerls) play an unlikely combination of extreme metal and disco/dance pop. Pushing the boundaries of conventional good taste, both musically and lyrically, they also display a twisted, partially submerged sense of humor reminiscent of Faith No More/Mr. Bungle/Fantomas vocalist Mike Patton.

In fact, the duo cites Patton/Mr. Bungle as an influence, along with fellow classification-skirting experimentalists Frank Zappa and John Zorn's Naked City, soul/pop stars Rick James, Earth, Wind & Fire, and Michael Jackson, and metal bands including Carcass, Morbid Angel, and Cradle of Filth. But while there is certainly a degree of humor in their music, the duo stresses that they sincerely enjoy (and are not out to mock) the various musicians and styles they reference, something borne out by the immaculate care and detail that goes into their studio-intensive productions; in other words, they are not just some comedy act.

Carnival in Coal initially formed in 1995, though their first full-length album, Vivalavida (or "Long Live Life"), did not surface until 1999. The first release on the small French label War on Majors, it consisted solely of originals and was performed almost entirely by Strobl and Wursthorn, with the aid of a drum machine and a few guest musicians. French Cancan followed later the same year, this time on the Kodiak label (distributed worldwide by Season of Mist), and included two more originals, along with bizarre covers of Ozzy Osbourne, Pantera, Morbid Angel, Genesis, adult contemporary singer Gerry Rafferty, and a song from the popular Flashdance soundtrack from the early '80s.
French Cancan helped to somewhat raise the duo's profile in the U.S. and met with acclaim (or at least intense reactions) from those who heard it, but it was still much more widely heard in Europe -- namely France, Germany, and Austria. Still strictly a studio project as of 2001, Carnival in Coal released their third album, Fear Not Carnival in Coal, in April of that year.

AllMusic Review by AllMusic
Consisting of vocalist Arno Strobl and multi-instrumentalist Axel Wursthorn, Carnival in Coal is a French duo intent on perplexing and subsequently exhausting listeners, coming across like some sort of demonic version of fellow countrymen Air. Instead of breezy pop tunes, however, CIC spew out genre-twisting electronic noise that often burrows into death-metal territory, bringing to mind a European Mr. Bungle. Former Bungle frontman Mike Patton's influence is clearly felt on these giddily bizarre tunes, particularly "Yes! We Have No Bananas" and "Don't Be Happy, Worry," which proudly display the band's twisted sense of humor. Those interested in following the antics of Arno and Axel will find no better place to start than FEAR NOT.
Here's a little song I wrote
You might sing it note for note
And if you can't remind the words
Count on me to stick it inside your skull

Ain't got no class ain't got no style
Ain't got no cash since you've been around
Remember the point of that ditty
Don't be happy... Worry!

The gathering of your teeth on the pavement
Won't be easy with broken fingers
Cause I won't listen to your "shit-chat" anymore
On you I closed a door (How bad! How sad!)
Still I wonder what you were waiting for...

How could I have been so stupid
How could I've been so blind
I'm still searching for reasons
That I will probably never find
That old fucking human nature
Is the only thing to blame
Except you and all your twisted ways
Which are all the same
All the shame

I've tried to think I was wrong
Then evidence reached my eyes
Helping me making my mind: So I...

Leave today
I won't change my way
I won't listen to what you have to say
So now sucker you'd better worry!
Damn over to be happy!

The gathering of your teeth on the pavement
Won't be easy with broken fingers
Cause I won't listen to your "shit-chat" anymore
On you I closed a door (How bad! How sad!)
Still I wonder what you were waiting for...

How could I have been so stupid
How could I've been so blind
I'm still searching for reasons
That I will probably never find
That old fucking human nature
Is the only thing to blame
Except you and all your twisted ways
Which are all the same

The gathering of your teeth on the pavement

Cause I won't listen to your "shit-chat" anymore
On you I closed a door (How bad! How sad!)

Helping me making my mind: So I...

Sabine Paturel - Les bêtises - 1986
Chanson / pop

Sabine Paturel (born 19 September 1965) is a French singer and actress.
Paturel was born in Toulon, and has three sisters.

In 1986, her first single "Les Bêtises" (French, "stupid things") stayed for 30 weeks in the French singles chart (Top 50) from March to October 1986, peaking at #2 for several weeks and achieving Gold status. In 1987, she released her second single, "P'tit Bouchon", which reached #13.

At the same time, she took lessons in comedy with Jean-Laurent Cochet, which allowed her to start an acting career in theater. She triumphed in La Menteuse at the Théâtre Marigny and was nominated at the Molière Award. She played in various musicals, notably La Mégère apprivoisée and La Reine Margot.

As an actress, she appeared in television series such as Cordier, juge et flic and L'Instit and in films such as Prends ton passe-montagne, on va à la plage (1983) and En cas de guerre mondiale, je file à l'étranger (also in 1983).

Paturel has now created her own drama courses and supplies coaching and vocational training.

She is not related to the French actor Dominique Paturel.

The song:
"Les Bêtises" (French translation for Stupid Things) is a 1985 song recorded by French artist Sabine Paturel. Released in March 1986 as her debut single from her album Cœur Bébé, released two years later, on which it is the sixth track. The song was a smash hit in France, even if it failed to top the chart. It was covered by several artists throughout the years and became a popular song.

Written and composed by Sylvain Lebel and Dominique Pankratoff, "Les Bêtises" is a song recorded as a nursery rhyme. It was qualified as full of mischievousness that could be subtitled "the rhyme of a calamity". In the lyrics, "the performer tells the disasters which she carried out to punish her boyfriend for having left her". Paturel performs the song with a childlike voice.
J'ai tout mangé le chocolat
J'ai tout fumé les Craven A
Et comme t'étais toujours pas là
J'ai tout vidé le Rhum Coca
J'ai tout démonté tes tableaux
J'ai tout découpé tes rideaux
Tout déchiré tes belles photos
Que tu cachais dans ton bureau

{Refrain:}

{Refrain}I've eaten up all the chocolate
I've smoked all the Craven A
And as you still were not there
I've emptied all the Rhum and Coke
I've dismantled all your framed pictures
I've cut your curtains up
Torn your nice pictures
That you kept hidden in your desk

Chorus
You should'nt have left me you see
What a nice result
I can't behave myself
Can't behave when you're away

I've dismantled the cupboard
I've well spread all the glue
As you still were not back
I've smashed everything to pieces
I've burned up the nice carpet
I've sawed the bed stand
Unraveled your nice garments
And set fire to your wardrobe

You should'nt have left me you see
What a nice result
I can't behave myself
Can't behave when you're away

You should'nt have spoilt my heart
Should'nt have left me without a baby sitter
I can't behave myself
Behave myself when my eyes are weeping

I've turned up the trash bins
I've broken up all the nice tableware
And wait I'm not completly through
I also spent all your money

Chorus

Pop / Rock

Le coeur was a Toulouse formation author of two excellent singles in the late 60s. Like many groups of this period, its members met in high school, played a few concerts and went to Paris. They were identified by Barclay who published during the year 1969 two singles. The latter not succeeding, despite obvious qualities, the group ends up separating.

Ils étaient cent, ils étaient mille
Le regard vide et plein d'ennui
Un soir si long

Tu restais seule
J'étais perdu, je n'avais rien
Ils étaient tristes
Tu étais belle
Moi je restais sage
J'étais bien

Au milieu de l'ennui
Ton sourire m'arrivait
Comme un soleil
qui dissipe le noir
Et le froid d'un hiver

Palapapa…

Un soleil assis dans la neige !

Un soir si long
Un soir si triste
Dans l'habitude et dans le bruit
Un jour tout plein
Ils avaient l'argent
Toi tu m'aimais tout simplement

Au milieu de l'ennui
Ton sourire m'arrivait
Comme un soleil qui dissipe le nnoir
Et le froid d'un hiver

Palapapa…

Un soleil assis dans la neige !

There were a hundred, a thousand of them,
with empty and jaded stares.
On such a dull
and sad night,
a lot of money and too much noise.

The music was playing
Smoke and light surrounded you,
and me amidst all this, simply looking at you.

There were a hundred of them
You sat alone.
I was lost, I had nothing.
They were sad,
you were pretty.
And me, staying put.
feeling good.

Amidst boredom
I recieved your smile
like a sun dispelling the darkness
and the cold of winter.
....
A sun sitting in the snow!

On such a dull
and sad night,
amidst routine and noise,
they had money
to appeal to you
while you simply loved me.

Amidst boredom
I recieved your smile
like a sun dispelling the darkness
and the cold of winter.
...
A sun sitting in the snow!
