Artist Biography by Jason Ankeny (Allmusic)


With his whiskey-and-cigarettes vocals, blues-inspired arrangements, and acerbic lyrics, Arno regularly earned comparison to gutter poets like Serge Gainsbourg and Tom Waits. Born Arno Hintjens in Ostende, Belgium, on May 21, 1949, he first surfaced in a series of little-known R&B-influenced acts, including Freckle Face and Tjens-Couter. In 1977, Arno and longtime collaborator Paul Decouter co-founded TC Bland with Ferre Baelen and Rudy Cloet, and after a name change to TC Matic, the group emerged as one of the more successful European acts of the early '80s, scoring a series of hits including "Elle Adore le Noir" and "Putain Putain." After a 1985 tour in support of Simple Minds, TC Matic split and a year later Arno issued his self-titled solo debut, written almost entirely in English. With the 1988 follow-up Charlatan, he cemented his roguish persona but also exhibited a more sensitive side via his moving cover of the Jacques Brel classic "Le Bon Dieu." Upon relocating to Paris, Arno wrote and recorded his third LP, 1990's Ratata, headlined by the hit "Lonesome Zorro." He next joined the one-off Charles et les Lulus alongside Roland Van Campenhout and Adriano Cominotto, recording an eponymous album stuffed with blues classics penned by Willie Dixon and Sonny Boy Williamson. Arno traveled to Nashville to record his next solo effort, 1993's Idiots Savants; after another one-off collaboration, Arno et les Subrovnicks (featuring fellow TC Matic alum Cloet), he ventured into cinema, scoring the Marion Vernoux film Personne Ne M'aime.

After spending virtually the entirety of his career writing and singing in English, Arno embraced French for 1995's chart-topping Les Yeux de Ma Mere, which dabbled in genres spanning from jazz to tango. He then made his acting debut as a homosexual swimming instructor in Jan Bucquoy's Camping Cosmos, extending his hiatus from the studio by releasing a 1997 live LP, Arno (En Concert à la Française). Arno's next album, Give Me the Gift, was recorded in English and distributed exclusively in the U.S. market. The release generated little attention in the American marketplace and he returned to film, scoring Michel Piccoli's Alors Voilà and also accepting a co-starring role onscreen. Another pseudonymous blues set credited to Charles and the White Trash Blues preceded Arno's next proper solo effort, 1999's A Poil Commercial. An acoustic LP, Arno Charles Ernest, followed in 2002, highlighted by "Elisa," a duet with French pop legend Jane Birkin. With the 2005 follow-up, French Bazaar, he again recorded solely in French, and earned the Victoire de la Musique award for Best Pop-Rock Album for his efforts. Arno returned to film via 2006's Komma, the first in a series of big-screen projects including Ex-Drummer and J'ai Toujours Voulu Être un Gangster. He finally returned to music in the spring of 2007 with Jus de Box.

Dickens featured the talents of drummer Serge Baumer, bass player Jean-Claude Bertin, former Moods singer André Chabloz, keyboardist Jacques Minary, and lead guitarist Jean-Claude Tissot.

Originally released in 1969 by the French President label, their one and only album "Dickens" showcased a largely original collection of tunes that's been widely labeled as a lost French psych classic. The band performed in both French and English, but be forewarned their English was limited with Chabloz sounding like he had learned the lyrics phonetically. It wasn't a big deal to me, but some folks will find his heavy accent a source of irritation. That said, these guys weren't half bad. They'd clearly had access to someone's extensive record collection, witness the myriad of garage and psych influences scattered across the LP, plus the fact they covered the US band Genesis single 'Angeline' (reappearing with the title 'Ange De Lube'). Guitarist Tissot didn't get a great deal of spotlight time, but he made the most of it and the Baumer - Bertin was never less than steady. Yes, there was some psych in these grooves (check out 'Genese' and 'Reve Et Fumee'), but exemplified by tracks like 'Cataclysme', 'I Wanna Love You ', and 'Ain't Got And That's Better' there was even more of a '60s US garage influence.

Kaaris (born Okou Armand Gnakouri on 30 January 1980) is a French rapper from Sevran. Or Noir, his major album on Therapy Music / AZ / Universal Music was released on 21 October 2013.

Originating from Sevran in northeastern suburb of Paris, in Seine-Saint-Denis department, born to parents from the Ivory Coast, he started rapping in 1999 releasing his first mixtape in 2001. He returned to his native Ivory Coast for a while, but returned to France after political unrest in the country. In 2007, he launched his street album 43eme Bima that led to signing with a new independent label French Cut Music.

However his meeting with French rapper Booba and producers Therapy gave him his first recording with Booba, "Criminelle league" released as part of Booba's Autopsie Vol. 4. Kaaris had his first charting hit "Kalash", credited to Booba featuring Kaaris appearing in Booba's album Futur.

Kaaris co-writes most of his materials in cooperation with record producer duo known as Therapy (made up of producers 2031 and 2093).

Moin çé Maléré: a magnificent slow song, a bolero-guajira, which almost resembles a reggae. A rhythmic chaloupée based on guitar and what seems to me to be a piano but must probably be tumba (?). Very beautiful voice of Paul Blamar, then arrival of brass, very poignant, on the chorus, which is followed by a harmonica solo. Cover notes: "The lament of a poor worker who, like so many others, dreams of happiness".

Lio (born 17 June 1962) is a Belgian singer and actress who was a pop icon in France and Belgium during the 1980s.

Wanda Maria Ribeiro Furtado Tavares de Vasconcelos was born in Mangualde, Portugal. When her father was called up to fight in the Portuguese Army, the family moved to Mozambique. Her parents divorced and, in 1968, Wanda moved with her mother and new stepfather to Brussels, Belgium, where her sister, actress Helena Noguerra, was born. In her teens she was determined to become a singer, and she was encouraged by singer-songwriter Jacques Duvall (né Eric Verwilghem), a family friend. She took her stage name, Lio, from a character in the Barbarella comic books by Jean-Claude Forest.

In 1979, together with songwriter Jay Alanski, she and Duvall began working with Marc Moulin and Dan Lacksman from the electro-trio Telex. "Le banana split", which sold over 1 million copies, and "Amoureux solitaires", a song originally by punk rock band Stinky Toys. Both songs rose to the top of many pop charts in France, and Moulin and Lacksman also produced her self-titled first album. In 1982 the American music duo Ron and Russell Mael, of Sparks, worked with her on the album Suite Sixtine, on which some of her previous songs were translated into English. Suite Sixtine was compiled and art directed by Ralph Alfonso for Attic Records Canada, where it was originally released. Her second album, Amour toujours, was produced by Alain Chamfort and released in 1983. The same year, she first appeared on the screen in Chantal Akerman's film Golden Eighties, a lighthearted, humorous French pop musical about the people who work together in a Parisian shopping center. Lio plays a carefree hairdresser in the movie.

In 1985 she met record company executive and producer Michel Esteban, of ZE Records. She continued to have hit singles in Europe, including "Les brunes comptent pas pour des prunes", and travelled to Los Angeles with Esteban to record her next album Pop model. Several of the tracks were co-produced by John Cale, formerly of the Velvet Underground, and the album produced the hits "Fallait pas commencer", "Je casse tout ce que je touche", and "Chauffeur". In 1988, after she had given birth to a daughter with Esteban, she resumed her acting career, starring in Claude Lelouch's film Itinéraire d'un enfant gâté. The Lio-Esteban partnership produced another album, Can Can, recorded in Los Angeles and Rio de Janeiro. She also designed a fashion collection for the European department store chain Prisunic.

She appeared in three films in 1990 and 1991, Chambre à part, Sans un cri, and Après l'amour. Daho was given carte blanche in the studio because Lio was busy shooting a film ; however, when his work was over, he showed no interest in promoting the album with her, limiting the success of the album. Michel Richard Delalande [de Lalande] (15 December 1657 – 18 June 1726) was a French Baroque composer and organist who was in the service of King Louis XIV. He was one of the most important composers of grands motets. He also wrote orchestral suites known as Simphonies pour les Soupers du Roy and ballets. His works foreshadowed the cantatas of JS Bach and the Water Music and oratorios of Handel.

Born in Paris, he was a contemporary of Jean-Baptiste Lully and François Couperin. Delalande taught music to the daughters of Louis XIV of France, and was director of the French chapel royal from 1714 until his death at Versailles in 1726.

Delalande was arguably the greatest composer of French grands motets, a type of sacred work that was more pleasing to Louis XIV because of its pomp and grandeur, written for soloists, choir and comparatively large orchestra. According to tradition, Louis XIV organized a contest between composers, giving them the same sacred text and time to compose the musical setting. He alone was the judge. Delalande was one of four winners assigned to compose sacred music for each quarter of the year (the other composers being Coupillet, Collasse and Minoret). Delalande's was the most important quarter of the year because of the Christmas holiday. Later he had full responsibility for the church music for the complete year. At his death, since he left no mass of his own, the 1656 requiem of the Dukes of Lorraine by Charles d'Helfer was sung.

Delalande left many versions of his works. His earlier versions show adherence to French Baroque style, but the later revisions incorporate more Italian melismatic lines and greater attention to polyphonic counterpoint.

Also, at least four collections of his works exist, each displaying different looks at composer's work as viewed by the people who assembled each collection.

Scholarship of Delalande's work was for many years hindered because of inconsistencies in the spelling of his last name: de Lalande, Lalande, la Lande, de la Lande, and others. The family wrote the name as 'Delalande'. Finally, in 2006 the definitive "Thematic Catalogue of the Works of Michel-Richard de Lalande (1657-1726)" by noted British musicologist Lionel Sawkins came out which runs to 752 pages containing over 3,000 music examples and details of performing requirements and of all source materials, as well as with comprehensive indexes and thematic locators.

Damien Saez was a French singer/songwriter who first studied music -- piano -- at the Conservatoire National de Région de Dijon before signing to Island/Universal in 1999.
Influenced by classic rock artists such as Led Zeppelin, the Sex Pistols, and U2, as well as '90s giants Jeff Buckley, Blur, and Radiohead, Saez -- born in Savoy, France on August 1, 1977 -- recorded and released his first album, Jours Étranges, late in 1999, and the collection sold well and earned him quite a good number of plaudits. 2001 saw the release of his first collection of poems, À Ton Nom, and in 2002, he released album number two, God Blesse -- which was meant to be a companion to the online experimental instrumental album Katagena available as a free for download and contained the highly controversial single "Sexe."
His 2004 album, Debbie, was his last for Island/Universal. In April of 2008, he released his fourth album, Killing the Lamb. In 2009 he released his first album entirely of English songs entitled Yellow Tricycle - A Lovers Prayer. He released J'Accuse in 2010 and followed this up with the 2012 Messina which was a more of dance-orientated record.

French alternative rocker Damien Saez does the impossible on Jours Étranges: he creates a distinct and powerful voice out of the post-grunge rock sound. But unlike Creed and Bush and their ilk, Saez changes all the rules around and refuses to rehash ideas that were old to begin with. For example, the emotive singer and some noisy guitar are paired with a funky beat and dramatic keyboards, resulting in the grand and intense "Soleil 2000." The thickest sludge anthems are ended with minute-long piano codas. The songs are filled with beeps, noises, and Edge-like guitar parts without one hint of useless irony or angst-driven cynicism. Taking the sounds of the '90s and updating them for the next decade, Saez made an excellent album that deserves more credit. This should be a mandatory listen for every faux grunge band who littered the radio while Saez toiled in obscurity due to the notion that language is too big of a wall for American music fans to climb.

Necrowretch - Putrid Death Sorcery - 2013

Necrowretch is a French Death metal band from Valence, Rhône-Alpes; formed in 2008. After recording demos through Skeleton Plague Records, Aural Offerings Records, and releasing 2 EP's through Detest Records; Necrowretch signed to Century Media Records on 6 February 2012.

Foundation (2008-2012)
Necrowretch was formed in 2008 by guitarist Vlad with "the impure intention to play sadistic-gravecracking-possessed death metal". Vlad was joined by drummer Blastphemator and recorded their first demo "Rising from Purulence" after 3 rehearsals. Bassist Amphycion joined after seeing them play a gig, making the band a trio and then going on to record their second demo "Necrollections" in 2010. Their first EP, "Putrefactive Infestation" was released in 2011 on 12" vinyl containing 4 tracks. They then released a compilation; "Ripping Souls of Sinners", followed by a second EP; "Now You're In Hell", released on 7" vinyl consisting of 2 tracks and featuring a cover of Death's "Zombie Ritual". Blastphemator later left the band later in 2011 due to a "total lack of motivation".

Deal with Century Media, Putrid Death Sorcery and Bestial Rites 2009-2012 (2012-2014)
Before the release of their second EP, Necrowretch were signed to Century Media Records on 6 February 2012. Necrowretch began recording their first studio album in August 2012 with session drummer Mörkk, the album artwork and title were revealed on December 5, 2012. "Putrid Death Sorcery" was released through Century Media Records on 28 January 2013 on CD, vinyl and digital download. Necrowretch then played live shows with touring drummer K Desecrator, who left the band on 14 June 2013 after playing at 7 shows. Necrowretch released a music video for "Putrid Death Sorcery" on 17 July 2013, with a compilation album being announced for release on 21 October 2013. Fans attending the Live Evil Festival in London were able to buy copies early from the band themselves. The cover artwork was revealed on 24 September 2013. Bestial Rites 2009-2012 was released as a compilation of the band's previous demo and EP material, on 21 October in Europe and 5 November in North America through Century Media Records on CD and digital download.

New drummer, Even Death May Die and With Serpents Scourge (2014-2015)
In a post on their Facebook page, Necrowretch stated that Ilmar Marti Uibo would play all the 2014 shows and would be their drummer on the next album. On September 16, 2014 details were released of the EP "Even Death May Die", which was limited to 500 7" vinyl copies, of which 400 were black vinyl and 100 were gold vinyl. The EP was released on October 13, 2014. The EP was slated as a "first taste" of Necrowretch's upcoming second studio album, With Serpents Scourge, which was released in February 2015. Necrowretch were also confirmed as being one of the bands in the lineup for Hellfest in June 2015. On December 28, 2014 Necrowretch posted a statement stating that With Serpents Scourge would be released on February 16, 2015. On January 13, 2015 the album details of With Serpents Scourge were revealed and the album is set to be released on CD, vinyl, and digital download. The track "Feast Off Their Doom" was also streamed on SoundCloud. On January 20, 2015, With Serpents Scourge was made available for pre-order.

Departure of Amphycion, return of K. Desecrator, deal with Season of Mist and Satanic Slavery (2015-present)
In December 2015, former member K.Desecrator was recruited back into the band, following the departure of Amphycion in August. The following year, the band announced they had signed with Season of Mist, with plans to release their third studio album in 2017. In May that year, the band announced they had begun recording their third studio album. In January 2017, the band premiered the first track from their third album, titled Satanic Slavery, with the release date set for April 14.

Album:
Putrid Death Sorcery is the first studio album by French Death metal band Necrowretch. It was released in January 2013 on Century Media Records. The album was made available as a digital download and on CD and vinyl format, including a light blue vinyl version limited to 100 copies. A music video for "Putrid Death Sorcery" was released on 17 July 2013.
The album features similar vocal registers and growls to those of the death metal scene of the 90's, with black metal aspects featured in both the lyrics and music. High pitched growls and screams are frequent throughout the album.
Reception
Putrid Death Sorcery received generally positive reviews upon its release. Blabbermouth.net gave the album a 7.5/10, praising the album's "vintage death metal of the most impure kind" and comparing it to other thrash metal acts such as Kreator, Sodom, and Destruction, Swedish death metal acts such as Nihilist, Grave, Necrophobic, and American death metal acts such as Autopsy, Death, and Possessed. About.com gave the album a 4/5, saying it reminiscent of Skeletonwitch "if they removed the black metal", and praising the "old-school" production and style of the music. Metal Forces magazine gave the album an 8/10, calling the band "everything a blackened death thrash band should be – sinister, brooding and downright bile-filled".

French chanson..without vocal...hmmm... Maybe you can try Michel Legrand, the great composer of Les Demoiselles de Rochefort and other film music...but maybe I don't understand your question.

Affiliated with a handful of different groups, most notably Zombie Zombie, Etienne Jaumet is a French producer/multi-instrumentalist. Following engagements in groups such as the Married Monk and Flóp, Jaumet formed the duo Zombie Zombie with Cosmic Neman and released the Zombie Zombie 12" EP on Boomboomtchak Records in 2006. The duo then moved to Versatile Records and released Driving This Road Until Death Sets You Free (2007), a 12" single that preceded the release of the accompanying full-length A Land for Renegades (2008).
In 2007, also on Versatile Records, Jaumet made his solo debut with Repeat Again After Me, a 12" release featuring a remix of the title track by Âme. His first full-length, the Carl Craig-produced Night Music, arrived in 2009 and spawned that year's Entropy EP. Jaumet returned in 2011 with the tech-house single Satori, and kept busy with collaborations with artists including Joakim and Richard Pinhas. After spending some time working with Zombie Zombie -- including a tribute to John Carpenter, the soundtrack Loubia Hamra, and their second album Rituels d'un Nouveau Monde -- Jaumet returned to his solo career. The single Metallik Cages arrived in late 2014, heralding the release of La Visite, a more dance-oriented set, in February 2015.

In some ways, it's a shame Etienne Jaumet called his first album Night Music. While that name was an apt description for his Carl Craig-produced solo debut -- which expanded on the atmospheric tech-house he also explores as one half of Zombie Zombie -- La Visite is also filled with tracks that sound best after dark.
This time, Jaumet opts for a more streamlined, and more danceable, approach reflecting the years between this album and Night Music. His collaboration with Richard Pinhas and his DJ gigs inform La Visite's sleek yet playful feel, exemplified by the single "Metallik Cages," where a slow-building and burning beat is joined by foggy synths and clanking percussion with sinister and kinetic results. The title track follows suit, balancing Jaumet's trusty saxophone with newer elements like his vocals so deftly that its flirtations with camp never get in the way of its momentum. Even songs that hark back to Night Music or his work with Zombie Zombie, such as the winking "Anatomy of a Synthesizer," could fit easily into a dancefloor mix along with "Stuck in the Shadow of Your Love," a whispery, urgent standout that makes the most of its surging synths and rolling beats. Jaumet doesn't abandon Night Music's introspection entirely, however.
Many of these tracks are downright subdued, which is all the more impressive considering that their instrumentation could tip over into wackiness in less assured hands. "Moderne Jungle"'s blend of sax and rubbery electronics sounds contemplative thanks to the vast amount of space surrounding them, an approach Jaumet returns to on "Midnight Man" and "Module Mou," which resembles Night Music's drifting kosmiche in miniature. The ease and flair with which Jaumet blends old and new, and atmosphere and purpose, on La Visite make it some of his most accomplished music yet.

Born to a French father and English mother, Loizeau received classical training in the piano and spent time in London studying theatre at the L’École Philippe Gaulier. Her initial showbusiness aspirations were directed towards the theatre, including time spent working as an assistant director to composer Georges Aperghis.
She launched her singing career in the new millennium, spending several years working on her debut L’Autre Bout Du Monde. The album favoured rhythms drawn from music hall and cabaret alongside conventional singer-songwriter traits, and featured duets with the US artist Andrew Bird and fellow French singer-songwriter Franck Monnet. Released in 2006 by the Fargo label, the album enjoyed commercial success in France and was also a cult hit in the UK. Loizeau’s live shows are notable for their theatrical bent, complete with carefully choreographed visuals.

A handful of female French singers have made modest inroads in the States in recent years, including Francoiz Breut, Keren Ann (an Israeli based in Paris), Valérie Leulliot (ex-Autour de Lucie), and the Nouvelle Vague-series vocalists (Marina Celeste, Melanie Pain, et. al.). But their music is often informed by American traditions, sometimes blurring borders to the point that only the French language -- or a slight accent if they're singing in English, which many do -- offers any clue to their origins. That's emphatically not the case with Emily Loizeau's sparkling debut. What the French have dubbed "Le Nouvelle Scene" (The New Scene) has a roots music branch that celebrates the country's storied chanson tradition rather than turning to foreign trends, and Loizeau's record places her at the head of it. Though her lineage includes Françoise Hardy, Serge Gainsbourg, and other post-'60s artists who took cues from American jazz and pop but put a Gallic stamp on them, Loizeau's roots stretch back further, from national icons like folk poet George Brassen and Edith Piaf to Django Reinhardt. With her cabaret touches, unabashedly romantic subject matter, and clever wordplay, L'Autre Bout du Monde ("The Other Side of the World") is French by birth. This doesn't make Loizeau calcified retro by any means. She's armed with a playful and lilting voice, inventive chamber strings arrangements, and a superior sense of melody in either pop or traditional idioms. As a result, L'Autre Bout du Monde sounds timeless.

Naturally, a year or two of high school French will unveil the vernacular subtleties, as well as metaphors so fecund you can smell the Gitanes and taste the pastis. But in addition to two songs sung in English, Loizeau can go bilingual mid-verse: "Oh, my baby, shall we play another game/pour la reste de ma vie?" she sings on the bubbly "Boby Cheri," a flirty, Brassen-like narrative powered by walking bass and a '30s jazz tempo. On "London Town," a wistful duet with kindred soul and European labelmate Andrew Bird, the two even switch tongues, with Bird putting his French lessons to good use. But you don't need a French/English dictionary to enjoy the songs. Loizeau travels well because of her memorable melodies and vocals and arrangements whose shifting moods and nuances sound like those of a veteran, not a novice. Double bass and brushed percussion provide the rhythmic scaffolding, with Loizeau's voice and piano carrying the melodic load. The shading comes from pizzicato or bowed strings, and songs like the haunting title track, the Gypsy-hued "Comment Dire" ("How to Say"), and the lullaby "Je Ne Sais Pas Choiser" ("I Don't Know How to Choose") are chamber pop with a strong Gallic twist. Wistful ballads spotlight the classically trained Loizeau's piano skills, adding airy, Erik Satie-like reveries or playful Henri Renaud jazz touches. All these elements coalesce into transcendence on album centerpiece "Je Suis Jalouse" ("I'm Jealous"), a three-minute march with exultant choruses and rapid-fire verses that recall Piaf -- sans vocal quaver -- at her most frank and vulnerable. It's classic pop that could come from any era, and if it were sung in English, it would probably wind up in an iPod advert. The record's only misstep is "Voilà Pourquoi" ("This Is Why"), a nursery rhyme too playful by half, the toy piano and "bomp-bomp-bomp" harmonies cloying and cartoonish rather than cabaret. Will L'Autre Bout du Monde find an American audience beyond tuned-in Francophiles? It certainly deserves one, no matter what side of the world Loizeau is from. (The record will be reissued by the French label Fargo in 2008 with an additional disc of live versions and cover songs of Brassen, Neil Young, and Bob Dylan, among others.)

Mathieu Boogaerts is an acclaimed French alternative singer/songwriter whose eclectic style draws from Afro-pop and reggae as well as indie electronica and folk music. Born in 1970 in Fontenay-sous-Bois, Île-de-France, France, he made his commercial recording debut in 1995 with the four-track maxi-single Ondulé Spécial on Remark Records, followed shortly thereafter by his accompanying full-length album debut, Super (1996).
After switching to the label Disc'AZ, Boogaerts again released a maxi-single, the five-track Version Simple (Et Version Compliquée) (1998), in advance of his full-length effort, J'en Ai Marre d'Être Deux (1998). Featuring a memorably folky Michael Jackson medley, "Beat It/Billie Jean," J'en Ai Marre d'Être Deux was a commercial breakthrough for the alternative singer/songwriter, reaching number 67 on the French albums chart.
In the wake of this breakthrough success, Boogaerts released a live album, Mathieu Boogaerts en Public (2000), and advanced to another label, the prestigious Warner Music France subsidiary Tôt ou Tard, on which he released the album 2000 (2002). Reaching number 25 on the French albums chart, 2000 marked the growing popularity of Boogaerts, and a November 2002 concert performance at Le Lavoir Moderne Parisien in Paris was filmed and later released on DVD as 2000 en Concert "Solo" (2003) in order to accommodate his expanding fan base.
While the successive albums Michel (2005) and I Love You (2008) were less successful commercially, neither breaking into the Top 50 of the French albums chart, they found Boogaerts moving in new directions creatively and were generally well received among critics as well as fans. In addition to his album output, Boogaerts is featured multiple times on the Tôt ou Tard compilations Plutôt Tôt -- Plutôt Tard (2005), a double-disc label showcase comprised of collaborations, and Le Grand Dîner (2006), an homage to Dick Annegarn.

François Deguelt (born Louis Deghelt, 4 December 1932 – 22 January 2014) was a French singer, best known for his participation on behalf of Monaco in the Eurovision Song Contests of 1960 and 1962.

Deguelt gave up his studies to become a cabaret singer in Paris in the early 1950s. In 1956, he was the winner of the Grand Prix du Disque of the Académie Charles Cros. Following a period of military service in Algeria, Deguelt returned to France, and was offered the chance in 1960 to sing for Monaco in the fifth Eurovision Song Contest, held in London on 29 March. Deguelt's song "Ce soir-là" ("That Night") proved popular with the juries, finishing in third place of the 13 entrants.

Deguelt returned to Eurovision, again representing Monaco, in 1962 with the song "Dis rien" ("Say Nothing"). This contest took place on 18 March in Luxembourg City, where he went one better by finishing second of 16 participants. Deguelt is one of five acts in Eurovision history (alongside Cliff Richard, Katja Ebstein, Chiara Siracusa and Zeljko Joksimovic) to have finished second and third without having won.

Deguelt's later successful singles included "Le Ciel, le soleil et la mer" (1965), "Le printemps" (1966), "Minuit, le vent, la nuit" (1968) and "La libération" (1968). Heccontinues to tour and perform on the nostalgia circuit throughout the Francophone world until his death. He died at the age of 81 on 22 January 2014.
