I'm willing to do N, maybe O as well, but I feel like I should probably wait until Luke is finished with his part.
Henrik, for the songs that were added after the spreadsheet was made, will those need to be added to the spreadsheet? Or will you handle those yourself?

Re: Help wanted - additional info for over 4,000 songs!
Thanks Nassim, Ron and Luke! Am I correct that what's left is P, Q, R, S and T? T could probably be divided into "The" bands and others.
For quite a while I haven't done much work myself on the site update, but I will give it focus from May 1st. So if it's possible to complete this spreadsheet by the end of April, that would be awesome!

For some reason, it seemed much quicker this time around (probably because Q was so tiny), but here's P and Q

Here an update file with the "non The" T
I went very quickly through the ones starting with The too to fill the obvious ones (though I did not want to decide if the B-52s are male or female fronted).

Well, for the B-52s, it may depend on the song. "Roam", for example, is definitely female-fronted.Nassim wrote:Here an update file with the "non The" T

Re: Help wanted - additional info for over 4,000 songs!
Alright, I've got some issues here.
1. Several songs that are initially listed as having been released as a single did not get a proper single release, but did get released on EPs. Are we counting EPs as singles in this case?
2. One of the songs in the spreadsheet is "My Funny Valentine", with the artist being Richard/Lorenz Hart Rodgers. The song was written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart (I don't now why the artist listing is all weird), but I can't find any evidence of a recording actually existing in 1937, as the spreadsheet says. Rodgers and Hart were the songwriters, but never the performers on any of the countless recordings of this song I could bring up. I'm not sure we'll be able to keep it on the spreadsheet.

Re: Help wanted - additional info for over 4,000 songs!
The songs list is just that - it hasn't been strictly a "singles" list for quite some time now. Henrik opened up the database years ago to songs that were never released as singles (e.g., "Stairway to Heaven"). If a song appeared on an EP, it's not the EP that's on the database - just the individual song.Sweepstakes Ron wrote:Alright, I've got some issues here.

Re: Help wanted - additional info for over 4,000 songs!
I am aware of that, but one of the columns of this spreadsheet asks if a song did or did not have a commercial single release in the artist's home country, or in the US/UK. I was asking whether or not an EP counts as a "commercial single".Harold wrote:The songs list is just that - it hasn't been strictly a "singles" list for quite some time now. Wait a minute, just as I was typing this, I realized that it actually says "Commercial single/EP in UK/US or the artist's country?" So that solves that problem.

I actually had a feeling that might have been the case even as I was writing, but I posted anyway, just in case.Sweepstakes Ron wrote: I am aware of that, but one of the columns of this spreadsheet asks if a song did or did not have a commercial single release in the artist's home country, or in the US/UK. Re: Help wanted - additional info for over 4,000 songs!
The question about EP's is important, as I use the information to blank the non-single songs for singles lists, i.e. if a song isn't a single it is not used in match-ups for critics' singles lists. To be regarded as a non-single gives the song a big handicap. Which is totally fair if they were never considered eligible (by the critics) for a singles list. The EP's are definitely somewhere between though. The question should be "Has this song probably been considered for singles lists?" There isn't even a uniform answer to this across all EP's. For "You Made Me Realize" I think the answer is yes, but for "Minor Threat" I think it's no. Pretty much I have considered UK EP's as singles and US EP's as non-singles as that is usually how they were marketed, and how the critics handled them in the EOY lists. Let me know if you think I'm wrong.

I'm making good progress on R+S. I have also gone back and edited some earlier info (mostly regarding the EP issue). I expect to be finished within the next day or two. If anybody wants to start on "The", they can go right ahead.

Ron, there are a couple of capitalization and spelling errors on German language tracks in the spreadsheet, which you might want to correct if you find the time:
Fettes Brot - Schwule Mädchen
Justus Köhncke - Was ist Musik?
Kraftwerk - Die Mensch-Maschine
Kraftwerk - Computer Liebe
Superpunk - Neue Zähne für meinen Bruder und mich

Re: Help wanted - additional info for over 4,000 songs!
Alright, I'm having a problem with one band in regards to the male/female column. The Go! Team was originally a project by one guy, Ian Parton, and their debut album Thunder, Lightning, Strike utilized various vocal samples, most (if not all) of them containing female voices. After the album was originally released, Parton was able to form a complete band (with a woman on lead vocals), and rereleased the album for the American market with many of the samples replaced with new recordings. Should the songs from this album count as male or female fronted?

Re: Help wanted - additional info for over 4,000 songs!
Wow, thanks again to everyone who helped me with the first spreadsheet. I didn't realize how much work you had put into it until I went through all corrections this week. Thank you so much!!!
But it doesn't end there. Now I have a (much smaller) additional spreadsheet, with songs that were included in recent critics' lists or because I had made mistakes and forgotten to include entries from older lists. As usual there are some debatable songs included...
Link to Google Drive for people without Excel: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing
I would be really grateful if I could get help with this spreadsheet as well. Also expect spreadsheets with 2013 albums and songs coming soon.
Thanks in advance!

So many new songs. Is it going to be a new Top 4000 or a Top 5000?
By the way, I really want to help, but my schedule for the time being is not helping. I only have time for like playing Random Rules, wanna cry.

Last I heard, there would be around 8000 songs on the site, so I'd guess a top 5000, though there might be enough for a top 6000 (fingers crossed)
