That's correct, it should be in 1966.

Just a question for Henrik - I recall you saying that, for the updated 3000 song list on the home page, you had a program that was able to make a Spotify playlist automatically out of your excel sheet?

Is it possible to create a similar list of all 9000+ songs that are expected to come from the new update? I would love to get started educating myself on these songs - otherwise, I could definitely help with making a similar Spotify playlist manually if there is a need.

Thanks for all the hard work, too! Love how it's turning out :D

No, I haven't been able to download it either; or rather, I can't open it once downloaded. Think it might be my ancient version of excel.

I have a demo of 2007 excel and the full 2000 version, and the list will only open in the '07 version. It's just a bunch of symbols if I attempt to get it in the 2000 excel.

I just came across this- big undertaking- and what a nice addition it will be. :) Aside from this addition, will next year's update include both EOY and all-time lists for albums and songs?

What I have is the link to each song in a spreadsheet. When I make a site update I can just reorder the spreadsheet and then paste the links back to Spotify.

It would be awesome if someone would like to add Spotify links too for these new songs! I have added a column in the spreadsheet, but we could also do it as a separate task that is collected aside of the other information.

Nassim, how are things going with B and C?

Anyone who wants to do I?

I have attached the spreadsheet as an older version for those who don't have MS Office 2010. Thanks for all the work so far!

I see a lot of good stuff that will be added. Glad to see "Honey" on the list, I like it and I get tired of people claiming that it's one of the worst songs ever.

Bruce, I'm sorry I didn't uploaded it to Google Drive earlier. Do you have information handy about which of these songs that made Billboard's top 40 (up to 1981)? I need this for "Dave Marsh & Kevin Stein (USA) - The 40 Best of the Top 40 Singles by Year (1981)". Songs outside the top 40 should not be counted for in my calculations.

I have a question about the list. Why for example Ride by Lana del Rey is considered for inclusion, while National Anthem is not, considering the second one ended up higher in the end-of-year chart?
Are omissions like this made by mistake or there is some other explanation for their exclusion?

I don't mean to be annoying, but I really want to get rid of this doubt. Thanks beforehand

Hey Santacosta, leveraging your question, I really wish that you could participate in the other forum topics too. Like this one, where you have to write the name of 10 tracks chosen randomly and then play to eliminate them. Or like this one, where you have to nominate 10 artists to enter the AM Hall of acclaim. Or any other. There are not many supporters of Latin American music here, and I think many would love to hear your opinions (On any kind of music). ¿Qué dices? :)

Re: Help wanted - additional info for over 4,000 songs!

Post by Henrik »

Great question, santacosta. The answer is that there are completely different algorithms behind the EOY spreadsheets and the main AM list. These 4,000 songs were selected from a preliminary score for the main list, and with that method "Ride" just got in while "National Anthem" came just outside the list. Their placements really seem to sum up to a similar amount of acclaim, so it would perhaps make sense to treat them equally, but somewhere the line has to be drawn.

If you can send me the list in a notebook file I'll do what I can.

Is there enough of a disparity in terms of acclaim to justify calling one of these songs 3001, and another 8000? It always seemed to me that bubblers were almost statistical noise.

One interesting thing I noticed about this list is that the artists with significant runs are the ones who are getting the biggest boost. A lot of artists are getting roughly one song per album/ year. For a band like Nirvana with only a few albums, that means they're getting 2 new songs. For someone like R.E.M., that means 12 new songs.

I used All Music, Wikipedia, and Discogs the vast majority of the time, All M was the source i used for most of the info, Wikipedia was used to double check All M or as a primary source if All M was lacking, and then Discogs was used to nail down single release dates.

I wish you the best of luck, some info can be pretty tough to track down :D

Blur - Chemical World
Johnny Cash - One
Gorky's Zygotic Mynci - Patio Song
The Magnetic Fields - The Book of Love
Oasis - Half the World Away
Oasis - Slide Away
Pavement - Here
Primal Scream - Shoot Speed/Kill Light

And here are 7 songs that will be included because they were in the Discothèque parfaite de la chanson française (2011) list, and were very close to be added before this list.

Dominique A. - Le courage des oiseaux
Bourvil - C'était Bien (Le Petit Bal Perdu)
Georges Brassens - Supplique Pour Etre Entérré A La Plage De Sète
Jacques Brel - Ces Gens Là
Léo Férré - L'affiche Rouge
Claude Nougaro - Une Petite Fille
Charles Trenet - L'âme Des Poêtes

This source includes 2000 chansons and include almost all the most acclaimed chansons. Therefore, this list confirms which songs that are acclaimed rather than shows what are the most acclaimed songs. For the AM ranking it will be more negative to be outside this list, than it will be positive to be on it. From the update spreadsheet, there were 7 songs that wasn't among these 2000 songs, and as a result I might take them out and replace them (or some of them) with the 7 songs above. Sorry French guys (and other chanson fans)! :?

Barbara - La solitude
Serge Gainsbourg - Comic Strip
Serge Gainsbourg - Cargo Culte
Serge Gainsbourg - Valse de Melody
Johnny Hallyday - Excuse-Moi Partenaire
Charles Trenet - La Folle Complainte
TTC - Dans Le Club

Those are my 2 favorite "Chanson française" songs so I am happy to see them here.
On the other hand TTC - Dans le Club, though not really a favorite of mine, was such a blast in the very formated French hip-hop that I was glad it got some recognition !

Anyway, I'll take U to Z, that's only 200 lines and I should have some free time next week.

Bon Iver - Flume
Doves - Kingdom Of Rust
Iron & Wine - Flightless Bird, American Mouth
Kent - Dom andra
The Mars Volta - Eriatarka
Mew - Am I Wry? No
Spoon - The Ghost Of You Lingers
