I'll never get what people mean by this. Why is film music harder to judge than classical music, jazz or any instrumental piece? I could understand it if we were talking about short incidental music, but that doesn't really make any lists and usually isn't even put on soundtrack releases. Something like Conquest of Paradise has a clear structure, with an intro that builds, a main melody and a real ending. What is not 'song' about it?
I don't think of film music as "song minus", rather as "song plus" — it includes the additional context of the movie, whereas other songs are more self-contained. In comparing film music with non-film music, we have to make a decision of whether to take this extra context into account or not. If we do, we're implicitly giving film music the advantage of another route to our emotions; if we don't, we're implicitly penalizing film music for its use of an additional medium.

Music videos complicate this discussion in much the same way, I feel.

John Barry Orchestra, featuring Toots Thielemans – Theme from “Midnight Cowboy”: 8
A really good melancholy piece of music, regardless of the movie. Very simple, but the harmonica is evocative.

There are so many factors that are into play here. Even more influential on the appreciation of a song than a movie or music video is the time and place we hear something. I bet that people's discoveries here on Biggest Fan are more at a down-time in their day, so they will go neutral into the song. However, when you talk to people about their favorite songs there are all too frequently external factors that play a role: songs that played a lot when you where a kid, that are tied to your home, when you fell in love, when you moved, or just about any mayor life event. Music nerds on forums like this listen to perhaps to too much to have that many of their favorite songs be tied to big moments, but among us this type of stuff also happens. Which is fine. I don't expect objective votes.

Starchman46 broke out of this game with his rather unique internet unground picks, but this time he is represented by a classic duo, albeit a relatively lesser known song from their overlooked debut.

292. Simon & Garfunkel – Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.
Year: 1964
Album: Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.
Biggest Fan: starchman46 (#110)

No, I seem to have just misnumbered the Simon & Garfunkel song. Fixed it.

But that does remind me that I never reacted to this:
Bang Jan wrote: Wed Nov 09, 2022 11:19 pm Got a reply from Geoffrey about the version of the Chopin Etude.
Geoffrey wrote: Wed Nov 09, 2022 10:27 pm Hello! Sorry for the late reply only seeing this now, I was referring to the Étude No. 1 from Op. 10 “Waterfall” in C major. Hope that clears up any confusion :)
Maybe we can include it on a later date during the fifth cycle?
Yes, that sounds like the right way to go. Once we get to Geoffrey's fifth pick it will be the Étude.

Also:

Simon & Garfunkel - Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.: 7
The first Simon & Garfunkel is mostly filled with covers of folk tunes or songs that sound like they would be traditional folk tunes. A few highlights not withstanding, it wouldn't be until their second album until they really found their identity inside the folk scene of the time. Still, they had something going for them immediately: the very best harmonies in town! And that lift this fine but otherwise unremarkable song above middle-ground.

And with today’s song everybody had four songs appear in the second edition of Biggest Fan. SL3 finishes with a song that like yesterday’s pick is a lesser-know track by a beloved band.

293. Joy Division – Insight

Album: Unknown Pleasures
Biggest Fan: SL3 (#243)

Brace yourself, we are onto Round 5, meaning that everyone is up for their fifth track to appear on the second edition of Biggest Fan. Or at least if you are among the 71 people left who still have eligible songs (sorry Bang Jan).
The first for take five is stevejazz, who had an entry only 10 days ago. It is his most well-know song up until now, but it is still older than most picks. It also ranks on AM, at an impressive #1516. It was also a USA #1 hit.

294. The Weavers – Goodnight Irene
Year: 1950
Released as a single (B-side to Tzena, Tzena, Tzena)
Biggest Fan: stevejazz (#153)

Don’t forget you can always vote at a later moment or change your rating.

P.S.: The numbering issue should be fixed for good now.

Joy Division – Insight: 7
"I'm not afraid anymore", Ian Curtis keeps repeating in this song, but who believes him? It is yet another dark sounding Joy Division track with a very appealing bass hook. It is what you expect with this band, but they do it well.

The Weavers – Goodnight Irene: 7
The version on the playlist is not credited directly to Gorden Jenkins and His Orchestra, but I'm not sure if it means it is a wrong version (I don't hear any coughs, Gillingham), but more a Spotify crediting issue. The thing is, looking up The Weavers and Goodnight Irene, with or without Gordon Jenkins and with different spellings of the title opens up multiple versions. Every Weavers compilation seems to favor another. I have no knowledge of the original, but having heard way to many now, I don't think it matters too much. It sounds more or less the same each time, but the singers swap solos on the verses.
I have a hard time rating it. I have a soft spot for Pete Seeger, but this is frankly a subtly dark tune beyond his friendly reach and the other singers are also a little to sweet in their singing. Lead Belly, the original performer, fits the song much better. Still, it has an easy and appealing little sweep and after sitting through so many versions it grew on me.

Frédéric Chopin – Étude Op. 10 No. 1: 7
This indeed sounds like a waterfall in musical form. Maybe this is ignorance speaking, but it doesn't sound that original, which is not to say it doesn't sound good.

We just had an entry of Sonofsamiam last Thursday, but that’s how it goes sometimes when we go to a new shuffle. You may know the song as one Brian Wilson recorded with The Beach Boys, but he also released a solo demo version some 20 years later.

Brian Wilson – Still I Dream of It: 8

Usually Brian Wilson is as far away from Daniel Johnston as you can get, music-wise at least. However, this demo gives us Brian Wilson without any studio trickery and in rather bad voice. I can see why this gets low ratings, it isn't exactly pretty. But there is an unfiltered nature that goes very well with these specific lyrics and like a Daniel Johnston song the crappiness turns into a fragile kind of beauty. A touching song.

I wonder how many bands wanted to name themselves Dragon, only to found out that they were beaten to it by a group from New Zealand. To be fair, according to RateYourMusic there were multiple groups and solo artists after this one to call themselves Dragon, but none as famous as the one Safetycat shares with us today. If that sounds like a joke, the song today has a rather respectable amount of plays on Spotify.

298. Dragon - Rain
Year: 1983
Album: Body and the Beat
Biggest Fan: Safetycat (#381)
