Comparing the new update

Post by Blanco »

As you already know, Henrik already updated all the Acclaimed Music lists. Thank you, Henrik.
He has also made a list comparing the differences in the positions that each artist received between the update and the last version here: viewtopic.php?p=13087#p13087

As he rightly says, we should not take the list seriously. I do not know why I feel I should repeat the same words here, but I do it just in case. Anyway, I wanted to extract the data from the list he made, to compare the update, perceiving how much time and years affect the results, you know. I hope that you do not find this lists unnecessary, since these results are "already there", but I think it is easier to compare this way. I only will put the differences between the Top Artists lists. If someone wants to put the comparisons between the other lists, I will be grateful.

Some results:

I knew Channel Orange would be high, but wasn't expecting it to be that high, and definitely not to be higher than Suburbs and MBDTF!

Some other changes I saw:
-Kid A is now the top album of the 2000's, overtaking Funeral and Is This It
-The Blueprint enters the top 200 (you missed that one on your list)
-Toys in the Attic plummets out of the top 150 to 361 (behind Rocks!)
-Sweet Child O' Mine (my favorite song) falls outside the top 100 :(
-Where Did You Sleep Last Night (Nirvana version) now just bubbling under
-When the Levee Breaks goes from a bubbler to 1254
-Nightswimming nowhere to be found (was it here before? I can't remember)

The Blueprint moved from 183 to 180, it was already top 200
Toy in the Attic never was top 150, it was 359 before the update ! (it's true though that it has been taken over by Rocks which was 396)

It appears you're correct. I'm not sure why I thought I hadn't listened to the Blueprint (I listened to every album in the top 200 last year). I guess I must have blocked it out of my mind.

I'm quite surprised for TV on the Radio (and for Boards of Canada, but in this case just surprised Geogaddi was #1 before the update. Also surprised that the Ideal Crash did not take the first place among dEUS albums earlier).
It's a shame for Kings of Leon, Youth and Young Manhood is their only good album.
Not sure if Halcyon Digest can stay for long over Microcastle, time will tell !
And Perfect From Now On as best Built to Spill album is fine with me too, though both (and Keep it Like a Secret) should be higher.

Geogaddi's higher ranking last time around can probably be attributed to what was apparently a somewhat higher weight given to the end-of-decade lists for the 2000s. Albums from 2000-2009, by and large, took significant hits in this update; in those rare instances where one's ranking actually improved, it's likely because that album appeared on one or more of the other lists that were added (e.g., the most recent edition of 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die).

Yes, I think I can remember Geogaddi overtaking Music Has the Right to Children in the previous update (probably). I think both are regarded at about the same height. Looking forward to see the placement of Tomorrow's Harvest. Probably not as high as those two, but in the top 3000 nevertheless.

Other lists I wanted to do, focusing on the top 200 artists:

New Artist entries in the Top 200:
(Previous rank / Current rank / Name)
----- 153 Frank Ocean
245 158 Grizzly Bear
273 163 The National
421 171 Bon Iver
222 193 Serge Gainsbourg
219 194 Billie Holiday
201 196 Van Halen
205 197 Green Day
220 198 Gang of Four
213 199 John Cale
206 200 The Allman Brothers Band

Artists who left the top 200:
(Previous rank / Current rank / Name)
171 215 Weezer
174 237 Hank Williams
176 212 Arctic Monkeys
180 201 Eric B. & Rakim
182 213 Aphex Twin
184 209 Manic Street Preachers
191 216 Echo and the Bunnymen
192 204 Public Image Ltd.
198 207 Queens of the Stone Age
199 222 Suede
200 206 The Prodigy

I guess we're all surprised with the high rank from Frank Ocean. I mean, we all knew this would happen, but agh, I dunno. Does it deserve to be among the best? Is that good?

Another surprise for me was that Hank Williams was no longer in the top 200. Not that I particularly like his music, I think it is because I'm more used to seeing him among the best artists from the beginning of the last century.

Also sorry for the exclusion of Echo and the Bunnymen from the top 200. I see the top 200 as the top among the top! You know, the place where the gods lie. Although the 216 place is not bad, right?

Judging by all the acclaim that ...Like Clockwork has been getting, Queens of the Stone Age will only be out of the top 200 for a few months.

I find it strange that "Way to Blue" is Nick Drake's most acclaimed song. I prefer a majority of his songs to that one.

More useless stats :

The band with the most songs in the AM3000 is without any surprise the Beatles with 46 songs far ahead of Dylan with 31. The Rolling Stones come 3rd with 28 songs, the same amount of Beatles songs in the top 1000!

More surprisingly I guess, the artist with the most albums is Miles Davis with 26, quite far behind comes and Coltrane with 19 each.

The year with the most songs is 1967 with 91 songs followed by 1966 and 1969 with 85 each.
The year with the most albums is 1970 with 85 followed by 1969 with 81 and 72 with 79 (while 79 has 72 albums !)

Albums by decades :
40s : 4 (0.13%)
50s : 181 (6%)
60s : 462 (15.4%)
70s : 720 (24%)
80s : 538 (17.9%)
90s : 533 (17.8%)
2000s : 433 (14.4%)
2010s : 129 (4.3%)

The average number of album per year since 1960 is 53, the low point, except for the early 60s, being 2009 with 33 albums (though it might be due to many EOD lists published in mid 2009 and thus including very few 2009 albums... Pitchfork only had 3 in their top 200 if I remember well). You have to go back to 1998 to find a year above the average.

Songs by decades :

1900s : 1 (0.03%)
10s : 2 (0,07%)
20s : 29 (1%)
30s : 37 (1.2%)
40s : 50 (1.7%)
50s : 229 (7.6%)
60s : 618 (20.6%)
70s : 599 (20%)
80s : 485 (16.2%)
90s : 433 (14.4%)
2000s : 399 (13.3%)
2010s : 118 (3.9%)

Low point of the past 50 years is 1996 with only 31 songs.

It seems that we have a new best French song, M83's Midnight City (and Serge Gainsbourg & Jane Birkin's Je T'Aime Moi Non Plus) taking over Daft Punk's One More Time
Ritchie Valens' La Bamba no longer is the highest ranked song not in English since it lost 40 ranks and is now behind Kraftwerk's Autobahn (and Serge Gainsbourg & Jane Birkin's Je T'Aime Moi Non Plus)

I completely agree on this one. I've listened to Five Leaves Left quite a few times and I can't even remember what this song sounds like. I would think "River Man" and "Pink Moon" would be his most acclaimed.

Bit of a meaningless statistic but for the record(s), The Beatles have overtaken Radiohead as the band / artist with the most album-of-the-year records.

It's quite an impressive run they have from 1963 to 1969: 3 - 1 - 2 - 1 - 2 - 1 - 1
The songs are not that high: 3 - 17 - 7 - 12 - 2 - 4 - 15
