1983 Poll Tiebreakers!

Post by Moonbeam »

The 1983 poll has resulted in a tie for the last spots in both the album and song lists!

The albums that are tied are:

Aztec Camera - High Land, Hard Rain
Echo and the Bunnymen - Porcupine
Metallica - Kill Em All

Please rank them as you see fit.

The songs that are tied are:

R.E.M. - "Shaking Through"
Violent Femmes - "Add It Up"

Please choose which song you prefer.

Unfortunately I haven't heard all the albums, so I will not taint the decision by voting (although I wasn't impressed with Metallica's debut at all, for what it's worth).

The songs is an easy choice, however: "Add It Up" gets my vote.

I just realized I forgot to vote for my albums. 'Porcupine', 'The Hurting' & 'Reach The Beach' would have all been higher and 'War' would have been my number 1....

1. Porcupine
2. Kill Em All
3. High Land, Hard Rain

As for the singles I love them both... but being a Milwaukee native I have to give my vote to "Add It Up". It's one of those songs everyone (Around Here) knows the words to.

I didn't vote for any of these albums, but I do know all three:

1. Kill Em All
2. High Land, Hard Rain
3. Porcupine

As for the songs, "Shaking Through" is good, but (for me) this is no contest:

My vote: Add It Up

The three albums were on my list and I will continue ranking it the same way:
1. High Land, Hard Rain (my #2 of 1983 and my #35 of all time)
2. Porcupine (#17 of 1983)
3. Kill 'Em All (#19)

About the songs none of them made my Top 50 for 1983 (I chose other songs from "Murmur" and "Violent Femmes" like "Gone Daddy Gone," "Talk About the Passion," "Blister in the Sun" and "Perfect Circle") but I like both. "Shaking Through" could well be the quintessential jangle pop song and defined a style whose influence lasted till the 90s and 00s. But "Add It Up" is pure fun, so my vote goes to the Violent Femmes here.

Just listened to Porcupine for the Moderately Acclaimed tournament. It didn't make my original 1983 list, but my initial reaction is a positive one:

1. High Land, Hard Rain
2. Porcupine
3. Kill 'em All

For the songs:
Shaking Through beats Add It Up

I was thinking about keeping it open for 3 days so those who wanted to listen to unheard albums/songs could do so.

My album votes aren't what I expected them to be:

1. Echo and the Bunnymen - Porcupine
2. Metallica - Kill 'Em All
3. Aztec Camera - High Land, Hard Rain

"Add It Up" easily.

If "Shaking Through" doesn't make it, then neither of the top 2 albums on the 1983 list put a song through ("Radio Free Europe" did make it for 1982 though.

Indeed baby Benjamin has come! Sooo in love!

No online access except through my phone currently. Listyguy, care to close this down and post results?

For albums, I was thinking of doing it like a sports tiebreaker - overall record is the tiebreaker, with record determined as follows:

If a ballot was 1. Aztec Camera, 2. Echo ad the Bunnymen, 3. Metallica, the matchups would be

Aztec Camera 1 - Echo 0
Aztec Camera 1 - Metallica 0
Echo 1 - Metallica 0.

Add all of these up and break the ties. I think Aztec Camera was the winner from my last tally, and Echo and the Bunnymen was next, but Metallica were close so you might want to triple check!

Ok here are the final results:
For the songs, "Add It Up" edges "Shaking Through" 9-8.

For the albums, "High Land, Hard Rain", dominated, with an overall record of 18-10 (10-4 over "Porcupine", 8-6 over "Kill Em All"). For the second song slot, because two get to move on, "Kill Em All" and "Porcupine" finished with the same overall record (12-16). However, "Porcupine" won head-to-head 8-6 (and this tally is without Antonious' vote, which was also for "Porcupine"). Therefore, "Porcupine" gets the second slot to the next round.
