Songs and Albums of 1984 Poll

Post by Listyguy »

Image

As we continue our adventures into the depths of the music of the 80s, Moonbeam passes the baton to me to take over the yearly polls.

My first month of the poll is also my favorite novel (and the source of my avatar) - 1984.

So please post a list of your favorite songs and/or albums of 1984. Only the top 15 will be given points, but larger lists are always great. Only lists with at least 5 songs/albums will be used for tallying the scores.

Feel free to check out the recommendation thread to see others' hidden gems or share some of your own! It's also a good place to get your feet wet if you're not very familiar with the year.

The deadline is midnight (UTC aka Forum Time) on July 1st.

To advance to the final list, songs/albums must have a minimum of 2 votes. In case of a tie, a tie-breaker will be set up.

Please use the following format when posting your list:

Rank. Artist - Album/Song

EPs and compilations are not allowed. Release dates are officially judged by RateYourMusic.

Now get to listening, and remember, BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU.

Thanks for taking over, Listy! I also love Orwell's novel. In fact, my favorite album of the year is a soundtrack from a film adaptation that year.

I have yet to see the movie, I'm not sure if I will be able to this month, but I will definitely check out the soundtrack. Thanks for the recommendation!

I have a question about Ry Cooder's Paris, Texas (and all the songs on it). The film was released in 1984 but according to RYM the album was only released in 1985. It's also listed as a 1985 album here on AM. Are we deeming it a 1985 or 1984 album?

I'm really hoping just enough of the MA voters remember Tabula Rasa for it to sneak in.

It's 1985. If you are interested in voting for specific songs from the album, you might want to check the site to see if they were released as singles or on other albums (I know that's common with soundtracks) earlier.

Nice catch on "How Soon is Now". I was looking at it's own single release, forgetting it was a b-side.
But "Shout" is strictly 1985 on RYM.

And I was surprised by how high "Tabula Rasa" is on RYM. It's currently 205 overall and #4 for 1984. I'm definitely going to check it out this month.

Hi, I got "Shout" as 1984 originally from Acclaimed Music; and then while Tears for Fears' front page on RYM lists "Shout" as 1985, 10 of its 14 issues are listed as being from '84. (Wikipedia lists it as being from 26 November 1984 [UK], and 4 June 1985 [USA]. RYM lists it as being released June 1985.) Is that frustrating enough for everyone?

If "Shout" gets moved to 1985, I'd like to add New Order's "Thieves Like Us" at #15 for 1984, and make the remaining entrants #1-14.

I see what you're saying. I don't understand why RYM would list it as 1985 when there are releases from '84. I would guess that makes it 1984-eligible. Does anyone else have an opinion on this?

Edit: I'm counting "Shout" for 1984.

No, I just apparently made a typo when I entered this album into my computer program.

Replace it with Reckoning, but as #15.

It's 1985. If you are interested in voting for specific songs from the album, you might want to check the site to see if they were released as singles or on other albums (I know that's common with soundtracks) earlier.
Well, you’re right, maybe I used the date of the movie premiere (April 1984) unconsciously, since I decided to do it like that during the 1900-1949 Poll where many of the exact date of releases of the soundtracks were not available (it was for instance the case of “As Time Go By” as Savoy BG pointed, I just felt that this song belonged to 1942 where it was showed to the audiences and not to 1946 when it was finally released on record). Anyway that’s OK, I just checked it on Soundtrack Collector, a reliable source for movie soundtracks.

By the way, Listyguy, I would like to add Piazzolla’s “Oblivion” to my song’s list. Could you change my original Top 15 for this one:
1. ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN "The Killing Moon" (#96 in my all-time list)
2. JOE JACKSON "Not Here, Not Now" (#241)
3. PRINCE & THE REVOLUTION "Purple Rain"
4. THE SMITHS "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now"
5. R.E.M. "(Don't Go Back to) Rockville"
6. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN "Bobby Jean"
7. RUBÉN BLADES Y SEIS DEL SOLAR "El padre Antonio y el monaguillo Andrés"
8. ÁSTOR PIAZZOLLA "Oblivion"
9. THE BLUE NILE "Tinseltown in the Rain"
10. TALK TALK "Such a Shame"
11. PRINCE & THE REVOLUTION "When Doves Cry"
12. ALASKA Y DINARAMA "Cómo pudiste hacerme esto a mí"
13. THE SMITHS "How Soon Is Now?"
14. LLOYD COLE & THE COMMOTIONS "Forest Fire"
15. THE STYLE COUNCIL "My Ever Changing Moods (Album Version)"

Honorio, are you sure that Paris, Texas and therefore Cancion Mixteca are from 1984?

Because both AM and RYM have it as 1985. I have them also as 1985. So if the RYM rule applies, and unless proven otherwise, maybe we should consider them as 1985? (the movie is from 84 but it seems that the record is from 1985)

"Take On Me" is probably the most underrated 80s pop song on AM. It's really out of the top 1000? It should be right up there with the (also excellent) "Boys of Summer" for this year.

I'm gonna say it's a compilation because I don't want to make things sticky by going against RYM.

@Henry: "The Paris Match" is from 1983. I will bump "Cover Me" into #15 to replace it. And I bumped everything behind "Hatful of Hollow" up because it's a compilation.

Dan, I'm afraid that Greg Brown's beautiful Iowa Waltz is from 1981. It was re-issued in 1984. Sometimes RYM is wrong...

Ah, OK, I won’t include it when I post my final list.

Such mellow and good-natured music. I really like how the production makes it sound like the folk, country and acoustic blues on the album were recorded way before the 80s.

I knew you’d like it too.

1. Cocteau Twins- Treasure
2. Tina Turner- Private Dancer
3. Bruce Springsteen- Born in the USA
4. The Smiths- The Smiths
5. This Mortal Coil- It'll End In Tears

That's all I can take from the 80s. I only voted so Liz and Robin could score higher which is well deserved
And btw #1 & #5, you're welcome JAMC and MBV. if they're the bands that influenced over 1,000 shoegazers than these are the bands that MADE the bands that influenced 1,000 shoegazers.
