Overlooked Songs 4 Round 1 Week 7

Post by BleuPanda »

A few notes:
1. There was an issue with the version of a song in the last thread - I am going to have a bonus match at the end between the two songs with the correct version, and anyone who voted in that match can change their vote if the different version changes their opinion. No one else is allowed to vote in that match so feel free to skip it in the playlist. Feel free to confirm your vote staying the same, but I will simply be adjusting votes for anyone who asks.
2. I wanted to warn everyone that the playlist this week is 20-30 minutes longer than every other week (even without the above-mentioned bonus match) - three of the songs this week run for over 10 minutes
3. After my mistake with the song from last week, I want to make sure I have the right versions of songs this week (and this is a comparatively confusing week). "Riders in the Sky" has a bunch of extra bits in the title but I think that plain title is the correct version on Spotify. "Tyrone" only has a live version, I think (as in, it has never had a studio version). The Box has a part 1 and part 2 on the original album - on the vinyl version, they were apparently one track together. There is also a 28 minute 'full' version in existence somewhere? I have included Part 1 and Part 2 on the playlist and hope this is correct. Please let me know if there are any errors.

Here is the bracket:

That's very kind of you to redo that match BleuPanda - but tbh I'm pretty sure it won't affect anyone's votes. I was just mentioning it for the record (and it's always nice to hear the hit version of a song).

Edit to add - The Box was my pick too! As you have it, part 1 & 2 together is how I always listen to it. When it charted part 2 was the section they played on the radio. The 28 minute version was from an extended CD single mix which includes vocals & is to be avoided imho.

I actually did listen to the vocal version, since I usually listen to these on YouTube. (Why, I have no idea, since I do have Spotify.) So my vote for black midi was comparing the two intended versions. Thanks, BleuPanda!

I nominated the song and the version I had in mind was this:

However, a little bit of research makes me think your version is the original, so I'm fine with keeping it, despite some significant differences. As someone who has a few years of Biggest Fan under his belt I know how confusing releases of old songs can be, especially in eras were artists frequently re-recorded their stuff and release strategies were a mess.

Vaughn Monroe - (Ghost) Riders in the Sky: A Cowboy Legend > Bjork - It's Oh So Quiet
The Rascals - People Got to Be Free < Manic Street Preachers - Your Love Alone is Not Enough
Steely Dan - Peg < Of Montreal - The Past is a Grotesque Animal
Erykah Badu - Tyrone < The Wallflowers - One Headlight
Lana Del Rey - Mariners Apartment Complex < Yeasayer - Ambling Alp
Sonic Youth - The Diamond Sea > KT Tunstall - Black Horse and the Cherry Tree
Charlotte Gainsbourg - Deadly Valentine > Orbital - The Box
Bon Iver - 33 "God" < Can - Oh Yeah

and my vote for Percy Faith vs black midi remains the same - I'm voting for bmbmbm still.

Goddamn it of course my pick is up against serious competition again. I think Ambling Alp is an absolutely wonderful song that has definitely been overlooked since release - it's also a forum discovery for me thanks to the short-lived album review game ages back.

Vaughn Monroe - (Ghost) Riders in the Sky: A Cowboy Legend
vs.
Bjork - It's Oh So Quiet
Close call so I'll go with the one that is actually overlooked.

The Rascals - People Got to Be Free
vs.
Manic Street Preachers - Your Love Alone is Not Enough
Today is not the day I will enjoy a Manic Street Preachers song, however today is the day I didn't eagerly wanted to skip a Manic Street Preachers so I guess that's something.

Steely Dan - Peg
vs.
Of Montreal - The Past is a Grotesque Animal
Hey, Eye Know where I heard Peg before ! Nice and catchy, but The Past is a Grotesque Animal is #33 in my all time list so... (and I didn't even nominate it ! )

Erykah Badu - Tyrone
vs.
The Wallflowers - One Headlight
Tie, both are OK

Lana Del Rey - Mariners Apartment Complex
vs.
Yeasayer - Ambling Alp
That bonkers album by Yeasayer is very hit and miss, but the hits are pretty awesome and Ambling Alp is one of them.

Sonic Youth - The Diamond Sea
vs.
KT Tunstall - Black Horse and the Cherry Tree

Charlotte Gainsbourg - Deadly Valentine
vs.
Orbital - The Box
Tie, enjoyed both a lot

Bon Iver - 33 "God"
vs.
Can - Oh Yeah

2. Vaughn Monroe - (Ghost) Riders in the Sky: A Cowboy Legend vs. 6. Björk - It's Oh So Quiet
No person should suffer the fate of having their nomination go up against Björk in the first round. I really like It's Oh So Quiet, exactly because it really doesn't suit her singing style, but she really seems to enjoy herself. Nonetheless, Ghost Riders in the Sky is indeed a great Cowboy Legend, a haunting song with the best Yippee-Ka-Jay's this side of Die Hard.

14. The Rascals - People Got to Be Free vs. 15. Manic Street Preachers - Your Love Alone is Not Enough
Your Love Alone Is Not Enough is one of those songs I go back and forth in between liking and disliking every time I hear it. Musically it is almost unbearably cheery, even of the lyrics are more conflicted. Whether it works is really dependent on my whether my mood can take a melody this sugary happy (a bit of how I feel about most ABBA, actually). Really strange that this is the same band that once made The Holy Bible.
Maybe I go for People Got to Be Free out of safety. I don't have any history with that one and at the moment it doesn't strike me as anything more than solid, but I'm also sure that this won't change.

13. Steely Dan - Peg vs. 5. Of Montreal - The Past is a Grotesque Animal
For many Aja is something of a work of exceptional sophistication and Peg is it's masterpiece. Perhaps. I don't find myself caring all that much. The Past is a Grotesque Animal, one of three 10+ minute epics this week, feels a lot more creative and captivating.

7. Erykah Badu - Tyrone vs. 10. The Wallflowers - One Headlight
One Headlight is good pop Americana, but certainly not as unique or captivating as Erykah Badu at the height of her powers.

1. Lana Del Rey - Mariners Apartment Complex vs. 11. Yeasayer - Ambling Alp
As our recent Top 2000 Songs poll proved, Mariners Apartment Complex is hardly overlooked. Ambling Alp deserves the support far more, but I can't give it. I simple can't vote againt any song in my top 100. Besides, while I like Ambling Alp, I don't feel particularly attached to it.

3. Sonic Youth - The Diamond Sea vs. 4. KT Tunstall - Black Horse and the Cherry Tree
An epic sprawl, focused on extended instrumental solos versus a very short and tightly produced pop song. Both are great examples of their style. The sprawl wins today (which admittedly it does a lot for me).

16. Charlotte Gainsbourg - Deadly Valentin vs. 8. Orbital - The Box
The 10+ songs win every time this week. The Box is a captivating alternative type of dance song. I don't really care about Deadly Valentin or it's parent album Rest.

12. Bon Iver - 33 "God" vs. 9. Can - Oh Yeah
A battle between two very different but both quite quirky songs. I'm more susceptible for the rough experiments of Can than the computerized discoveries of Bon Iver.

Bonus 'rematch' :
Percy Faith - The Song from Moulin Rouge vs. black midi - bmbmbm
I guess The Song of Moulin Rouge does get something with the added vocals, but bmbmbm still has more purpose.

I can't say I've dived deep into Les Rita's œuvre but I've loved Marcia Baila and Andy since I bought a French hits compilation as one of my first Francophone albums (can't remember its name, it also had Jacques Higuelin's Champagne, Julien Clerc's Ce n'est rien, Francoise Hardy's Partir quand meme). << Les amants >> has become one of my dearest songs too and I think we both rate the surreal video highly after we both voted for it in last year's video poll! Well-spotted with the Marcia lyric :music-rockon:

Good compilation!

Les Rita, as they are often called in France, I like them more and more with time. If it were up to me (shit, it is actually), I would put 5 or 6 of their songs in my top 100 ever.

The song "Le p'tit train" is another of their wonders. Less known internationally, because the double meaning often escapes the non-French speaking public of course. Catherine Ringer, behind a catchy tune, actually sings about the death trains during the second world war, of which the singer's father was a victim. There is a moment, where she goes from singing to screaming with pain, that gives me goosebumps. This song is beautiful if you want to get even more into their work.
And yes, "Les amants" thrills me every time.

And for the lyrics, If you hadn't put the four i's, I might not have noticed, but here I read it almost while singing it ;-)

And for the lyrics, If you hadn't put the four i's, I might not have noticed, but here I read it almost while singing it ;-)
:music-singing:  Cheers for the tip as well! I've had a listen of the Marc & Robert album, I need to hone in more on Le p'tit train's lyrics next time around to get the most out of it 8-)
All I got inside is vacancy!
