Listyguy is one of the people who plays both versions of Biggest Fan. Let’s put the spotlight on him this time. People who feel we have too many well-known artists and songs up to this point will probably not be happy with this entry. It ranks at #5763 on AM. It’s parent album ranks considerably higher.

10. The Beatles – Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!
Year: 1967
Album: Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
Biggest Fan: Listyguy (#730)

Don’t forget you can always vote at a later moment or change your rating.

8. My Morning Jacket – I Will Be There When You Die: 7
Very demo-ish and simple, but I heard it at the right moment so it did struck a chord with me.

9. Swans – When Will I Return: 10
Not sure if you can vote on your own song. If not, ignore this.

10. The Beatles – Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!: 8
You won't hear me say this often, but actually one of the very few underrated Beatles songs. Surprised it only got one vote, knowing how many Beatles fans are around here (and anywhere).

10. The Beatles - Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite! : 6,5
9. Swans - When Will I Return : 8
8. My Morning Jacket - I Will Be There When You Die : 6
7. Metallica - The Unforgiven II : 8
I'll side with Karla on that one. For me Metallica is all about the 80s, they released more great song between 83 and 86 than in the whole rest of their career ; but if they have to go radio friendly, the Unforgiven II is close to the best case scenario.
For French people, the original one has one of the greatest and most famous "auditory illusions" (when you misheard lyrics in a foreign language as something silly in French... kind of like "Hold me closer Tony Danza" but from a language to another)... but aside from that I don't enjoy it like much of the overblown, overrated and oversold album it comes from.

I don't participate in this game regularly enough, but seeing one of my songs appear has compelled me to vote for those that I'm familiar with:

Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite: 9 (I'm pretty surprised nobody else voted for this song)

The Beatles – Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!: 7
Recently I was listening to a Dutch podcast on Bob Dylan that suddenly digressed into observations surrounding the obsession of British bands in the sixties for fanfare, marching and circus music. When listening to a few of those examples in the podcast I became very aware that this isn't my favorite part of the British invasion. Mr. Kite was not chosen as the Beatles example of the style (Baby's in Black had the honor) it might have been. The reason I don't embrace Sgt. Pepper's quite as well as some do is exactly that fanfare vibe that makes up much of the sound. Taken on it's own I can actually stomach Mr. Kite better and appreciate the drug-out circus act a little more. Take heed though: never try a trapeze act without a safety net while on psychedelics!

I feel like "Kite" drags down Sgt. Pepper's rep a little in its comparison with Revolver or other Best Album Ever candidates.

British bands were not the only musicians obsessed with marching music at the time. You can find it in the jazz world too (e.g. Albert Ayler or Carla Bley).

In my estimation that dubious honour definitely goes to When I'm Sixty-Four (which is also lower on AM than Kite). How can an album with a song like that be regarderd so highly? But then again, I think this is true for every highly acclaimed Beatles album (Maxwell, Ob-la-di, Submarine, etc.).

I enjoy each of the songs you mentioned far more than Kite :-)

I tend to skip Kite rather than endure it. Each listen of the other songs is enjoyable.

George Martin has said that one of his few regrets was leaving off Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields Forever from Sgt. Peppers.

When pressed as to what dings they should replace he stated that ultimately it should have been When I’m 64 and Lovely Rita.

Mr Kite is way better than Ob La Di, Maxwells, and 64 (or as John used to say ‘Paul’s s**t granny music’

Today’s song is brought to you by Flibie, a user who only has 6 songs eligible for this game. This one is his highest ranking of those and actually one of the more unknown quantities that appeared up until now. Although it was a minor hit in the US and Canada. Nowhere else though.

11. Edwin McCain – I Could Not Ask for More
Year: 1999
Album: Messenger
Biggest Fan: Flibie (#82)

Sure, but the podcast I was listening to was about pop/rock. Outside avant-garde jazz it was more a British affair. Especially the jolly circus type of fanfare that you find on Sgt. Peppers/ Mr. Kite.

Odd that I've known all 11 songs so far. (I think about 60% of the Biggest Fan songs were new to me in the 1st edition.) I'm sure it'll balance out, but it's definitely a surprise given that all of these songs only made 1 list.

Schmalz indeed. The worst isn't even the strings, but the combination of terrible, unpoetic lyrics with the overwrought singing. It feels like the artist is very impressed with how emotional he is. He sounds like Bryan Adams at his worst and more over-the-top. I'd ask for less in this case.

Swans - When Will I Return - 8

I've been a huge Swans fan since 1987. Quite a few songs made my Top 1000 although not this one. Still great though.

The Beatles - Being For the Benefit of Mr. Kite - 6.5

Only ranks above "When I'm 64" on Sgt. Pepper for me but even the "lesser" Beatles songs of this era tend to be pretty good.

Edwin McCain - I Could Not Ask For More - 2

After hearing this I really could not ask for more.

This one reminds me of "I Don't Want To Miss a Thing" which is one of those songs which I know is cheesy but I can't help liking (& checking out wiki they're both written by Diane Warren so that would explain it). It's never going to be a personal favourite but I can see how it could be in someone's top 100 and it's better than I was expecting after reading everyone's rating so far.

8. My Morning Jacket – I Will Be There When You Die - 7
I really enjoy the singer's voice in this.
9. Swans – When Will I Return - 8
This owns, what a great build-up. I like the way Swans often use a very slow but loud beat to create a sense of dread. Like giant footsteps.
10. The Beatles – Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite! - 7
Actually I think it's good that the Beatles just had occassional circus songs on their records. It's fun, lighthearted. I like the version of this from Love.
11. Edwin McCain – I Could Not Ask for More - 4
Come on if you're going to do a song like this it needs to get really over-the-top. Construction is too simple and Edwin isn't exciting enough a vocalist to sell it.

Back to more familiar territory with prosecutorgodot. Last time around he brought along several gaming tracks, but for now he settles for more familiar territory, with a song featuring two modern titans and with over 300.000.000 plays on Spotify.

Year: 2012
Album: Good Kid m.A.A.d. City

More familiar indeed! One of the few times I might prefer Drake's part more than Kendrick's. I quite like the ending, a bit Burial-like. But I'm not a fan of the female background vocals throughout the song, nor do I like the beat very much.
