A quick note, in case anyone's interested, on what I've come to refer to as "Project 3000," my quest to own all of the top 3000 albums on CD.

There are 199 new entries or re-entries to the top 3000 in this update.

I already have all of them.

That is all.

Happiest surprise of the update for me: one of my favorite underrated albums, Johnny Winter's Second Winter, is finally in the top 3000. The great albino blues guitarist from Texas went for broke on his second album, whose original vinyl version held the distinction of being a three-sided affair (done, according to the liner notes, to prevent any loss of sound quality from cramming 47 minutes of music onto a standard single LP). Early rock and blues covers rub shoulders with sly, off-kilter originals (including two titled "I Love Everybody" and "I Hate Everybody"), all held together by Winter's casually dazzling guitar work. The two best tracks are both covers: an opening run-through of Percy Mayfield's "Memory Pain" that sets the tone for everything that follows, and a staggering, slide-drenched version of Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited." Great to see the album finally getting its due here.

Thanks much, Henrik. 8-) And nice to see some all-time lists made the cut. That leaves some others for the next update- gotta have more to add , in the event that there's a shortage of new all-time lists to come over the next several months.

Wonderful!

I'm happy The White Stripes Elephant managed to squeeze into the top 100! Though I wish more people got the genius that is Get Behind Me Satan.

Whoooa! #1 changed!

Channel Orange at #125 is way higher than I expected.

Is there going to be an Excel file we can use to compare the previous positions to the new ones? That would be cool. What are the highest debuts?

Kind of funny to see Idler Wheel as Fiona's top 1000 debut. I think When The Pawn and Extraordinary Machine are far superior albums.

For when somebody makes a new 'First ten album gap' topic, my first is 971-980. :D

Here's a spreadsheet of changes in the artist list. Not to be taken too seriously, you know...

Edit: I have changed the formula for the artist ranking again. The new formula takes each artist's top albums and songs into account as follows:

ln(ln(10+album1)) + ln(ln(10+album2)) + ln(ln(10+album3)) + ln(ln(10+album4)) + ln(ln(10+album5)) + ln(ln(10+album6)) + 0.8*ln(ln(10+album7)) + 0.6*ln(ln(10+album8)) + 0.4*ln(ln(10+album9)) + 0.2*ln(ln(10+album10))

Many thanks for this amazing work. I must admit that at each update I'm more impressed by the amount of work you take on your shoulders, your courage is truly inspiring. I really believe your website is one of the most important on the Internet regarding music right now. Thanks again.

Amazing performance by M83' "Midnight City" and Frank Ocean's "Pyramids", which all both cracked the top 200 songs on first inclusion. Very satisfied since these are two favourites of mine.

Thank you so much, Henrik. Your hard work is so very much appreciated.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have about five days of work updating my iTunes library to match the new update. :D

Awesome!!!! I haven't had this kind of feeling since waking up on Christmas morning when I was about 10. I can't even wrap my mind around how much work this must take, Henrik, but I (like everyone else) am forever grateful. I have a lot of exploring to do. Thank you!!!!

Great work on the update! I do have one quick question. I know that with some past updates, the year listed for a particular album or song has changed (i.e. it was discovered that it was actually a released the year before or after the previous listed year, this tends to happen with older releases). Have any years changed between the last version and this one?

Thanks again for the update!

Bravo Henrik! Going to listen to Phil Spector's Christmas album, or at least I would if I didn't have so many other new tunes to check out. Thank you very much for all your hard work!

Wow, I think I'll do the same, maybe I will begin during my holidays. I've been reading the song list from bottom to top (until 2500) and it's filled by gems. I wish I could have a radio weekly program, I could dedicate the next two years to play these wonderful 3000 songs. Everyone in the world should listen to these songs!

Henrik, let me add my congratulations to you and make it extensive to all the people that collaborated, including Blanco and Nassim that analysed it so well. Great update!

I may have missed the note, but why was The Movement removed?

http://www.acclaimedmusic.net/Current/movement.htm

Also, Pure Pop:

I also noticed that Wanadoo Albums of the Year also were removed.

Just curious. Thanks. :)

Those are lists I have received by email. There is no evidence on the web that they have ever existed, and nobody in the forum had heard of these magazines either when I asked around a while ago, so it might be that I was fooled by people who wanted to make an impact on AM with their personal lists.

Either that or the sources are rather insignificant anyway.

Interesting. Thanks for the response, Henrik. Dd you ever try contacting the people who sent the Movement and Pure Pop lists?

What about the Wanadoo 2005 albums? Like you said, probably not a significant source, anyhow. Remember the trouble I had with the Wanadoo 80s songs list? I had to get the Orange team (formerly Wanadoo) to pluck it outta cyberspace to prove its existence.

Haha, that sounds awesome! I would definitely listen to that radio program if it existed!

I may have to retract my earlier statement, however. I'm already listening to songs on a different list (1500 songs), and I'm not even halfway done, plus I've been kinda slacking off on listening to all the songs. I don't want my listenings of that list and AM's list to overlap, so I don't think I'd have time to listen to all the songs before the next update (assuming there isn't another hard drive crash). I will certainly try to do a complete listen-though of the next update, though!

Just out of curiosity, has there ever been an example of a song or an album dropping from the Top 3000 or the Bubbling Under to "completely off the list"?

What a fantastic update Henrik !!!...Good on ya !!!...The songs section has particularly improved with the additions of these three major lists namely: Dimery/Verlant/Petridis.... There is a lot to chew on in the first days of summer...it's when i get to the "bubbling under" section that I always realize how much work it represents...THANK YOU VERY MUCH HENRIK... :music-rockon:

Great update...love the way you weighed the '10s releases Henrik, keeping the young decade from overwhelming the list, while still giving it decent weight.

Every update, I start to think top 1,000 has become more of the standard of "classic albums" than top 500. The idea of the top 500 was established in the late 90s/ early 00s, and has kind of been my own arbitrary cut-off for "classic album" status for the last 10+ years. With an increasing number of lists focusing on 1,000 albums (or 1,001...hahaha) I think this is quickly becoming the gold standard.

Music has branched off over the past years from easily definable genres and sub-genres to unique, singular sounds, and it's getting kind of hard to sum everything up in 500 albums. Just an observation and a possible conversation starter, ignore if you feel necessary.

While I was reading the song that left the Top 3000 I was feeling so sad (no! not this one!) but when I read the new entries I was more than satisfied. Excellent songs entering (and re-entering) the Top 3000!

Hi Henrik, seems like you made a lot of people happy there... :D if you've got just 5 minutes, can you explain me where you gor this list from Giannis Petridis about the 2004 Best Songs Of The Century....? I can't find any source on internet...Is it a book or the tracklisting of a multi retrospective of pop music...?

I can field that one, o.m. :)

Someone had directed me to a link that listed all the tracks- and then, he sent me scanned copies of the index pages. :)

This was the link for the tracks:

It was an excellent find, eh?

I would just like to point out that "Call Me Maybe" is in the top 1000. Let me repeat that: CALL ME MABYE is in the top 1000. I almost started crying when I saw this.

I am completely in love with the new update :D It's just so nice to spend the weekend observing the changes. Thanks for your wonderful work Henrik!
And just adding that I think Call Me Maybe is really deserving of being in the Top 1000. It's a perfect pop track, with no mistakes.

"Call Me Maybe" alone pretty much prompted me to stop listening to top 40. I don't think there was any point in time during the summer of '12 when a top 40 station in America wasn't playing that song.

I've somewhat warmed up to it lately, but not entirely. But considering most of the songs I heard on top 40 radio this decade aren't even on AM, "Call Me Maybe" can't be THAT bad. I'm somewhat more concerned about "Super Bass", though.

Call Me Maybe is 'Good for top 40', as it does not hurt my ears, but putting it on a list of the greatest music of all time is pretty silly.

This is exactly what I was trying to say! To suggest that "Call Me Maybe" is better than songs like "Everlong", "Ain't No Sunshine", and "Redemption Song" (all of which are ranked below it) is ridiculous.
And I have to agree with Ron. I was attacked by that song wherever I went last summer. It's a decent song, but not top 1000 of all time.

I don't really see how somebody can hold that opinion towards Call Me Maybe and still be fine with say, Be My Baby being as high as it is. Just because something is pop doesn't make it any more or less music than a more "serious" genre.

I think it's all based on personal opinion ... But I think that sometimes music critics and lovers have some bias against pop music, and it's nice to see a deserving one being recognized. After all, pop music is all about fun and catchy beats (and the ones on Call Me Maybe are very well constructed, especially the violins on the chorus) and unpretentious, relatable lyrics. What's more relatable for young people than the situation described on Call Me Maybe's lyrics, which sounds very fresh?
I mean, pop is definitely not my favorite style, but I think that sometimes people just make the big mistake of tryigng to compare it with other genres for greatness.

I like pop music but I stopped paying attention to top 40 charts around 1999. To my personal ears, "Call Me Maybe" is as good/bad as some of the chart toppers from that period, like Cher's "Belive" or Ricky Martin's "Livin' la Vida Loca".

I had the same experience on Friday! I was looking at the new list and saw this song right outside the top 100 I'd never heard of called "Midnight City". I was floored when I heard it for the first time.

The moment when the saxophone kicks in on "Midnight City" has got to be one of my all time favorite moments in music.

Also, in regards to "Call Me Maybe"'s absurdly high placement- I don't really care too much. I don't love the song, but it's not a bad song by any means. I'd never put it in my top 1000 songs, but it's still better than a solid 95% of pop music out there currently.

About thinking about the placement of the songs, I think it's pretty relative.

There are some songs that I think are great, but which is not in the AM or just as are bubbling under.

The site is great, Henrik makes a GREAT job, but the choice of some lists may sin some results. For example: There are many punk songs with high placements, and fewer of modern R&B or pop music (80/90's), maybe for having more british publications, I don't know.

But reiterating, I don't think that's is Henrik's fault, he really deserves ALL the praise possible! :music-listening:

So, on the new AM3000 there are, after a quick count, between 600 and 610 albums I am 100% sure that have listened from start to finish.
I'd say there are about 100 where I can't be sure if I really reached the very end and probably about 300 or 400 more of which I have at least heard half of song. But I'm only trying to keep track of which ones I listened fully.

My first 10+ gap is :
703) Johnny Cash - At San Quentin
704) The KLF - The White Room
705) Jimi Hendrix - Band of Gypsys
706) Laurie Anderson - Big Science
707) John Prine - John Prine
708) Woody Guthrie - Dust Bowl Ballads
709) Syd Barrett - The Madcap Laughs
710) Graham Parker & The Rumour - Squeezing Out Sparks
711) Soft Cell - Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret
712) Run-D.M.C. - Run-D.M.C.
713) Todd Rundgren - A Wizard, a True Star
714) Sepultura - Roots
715) Erykah Badu - Baduizm

I might have listened to At San Quentin already, but it still would be a 10+ gap anyway !
