I find the label "classic rock" real interresting. What defines it and what music is and is not classic rock. Therefore I ask you to give your estimate of what you think is classic rock. If you take my list as an example, list songs as "C" (classic rock), N (not classic rock) and "U" (Unknown to you). Any comment to clarify why it is or is not are welcome. After that we can continue the discussion.

My working hypothesis is that classic rock has to do with common themes (instead of idiosynchratic) and that the feelings in the songs are clear and that the song attracts followers through generations somehow.

Eight list (and not tenth, at least by my counts). It's funny that you mention the word "idiosyncratic" in your comments about classic rock because your list is in fact highly idiosyncratic. This game began with three highly personal lists (from Moonbeam, Henry and Zorg) and after three other more rock-based lists (Listyguy, Whuntva and Slick) it's time to come back to personal lists filled by surprising choices. My Top 10 of unknown songs are included in your Top 30 (and the first 5 in your Top 10!!). So, come on, let's go…

Top 10 of unknown songs:
1. John Ottman | The Usual Suspects Main Theme: a surprising choice for an all-time favourite song, I admit not having heard about the composer or the score and, to my shame, I even never seen the movie (although I know that it's considered a masterpiece by many people). I loved this "Main Theme," it has a mysterious and haunting ambiance full of "suspense" but it also has some of the majesty of the great romantic scores.
7. Rahsaan Roland Kirk | Saxophone Concerto: Saxophone Miracle/One Breath Beyond/Dance of Revolution: avant-garde jazz, not an easy style to get into for sure but if you dare you get rewarded with a bold piece of music. A voice announces in the intro that it's "time for America to discover some of its true Black miracles" and then begins a travel from bebop to free jazz including many different branching and detours like the flamenco-like or circus music that we can listen of the second part ("One Breath Beyond," my favourite). A fascinating (although sometimes nightmarish) trip.
8. Mattias Alkberg BD | Stockholm: intense Swedish rock from an artist with few information on the Internet even in Swedish (probably it's not a consensus artist, it's not featured on the highly recommendable Spotify list by Henrik of his Swedish favourites), it sounds like an epic ode to Stockholm (I suppose because I don't understand the lyrics) that benefits from a sax on fire throughout the song.
9. Cymande | Dove: an excellent sample of afro-jazz-funk with an amazing guitar work and Latin-flavoured percussions that reminisces early Santana and Osibisa. But I want to point to the relentless funk bass line and to some exotic touches of flute.
10. Charles Mingus | The Shoes of the Fisherman's Wife Are Some Jive Ass Slippers: the song that opens the album that Mingus himself described as "the best album I have ever made." This song is wonderful with rich arrangements and a distinct big-band-swing flavour but featuring the idiosyncratic twists and turns of Mingus music. Or how to innovate while not exiting the most classic of classic jazz styles.
16. Bill Evans | Peace Piece: absolutely sublime. A wonderful discovery, especially after knowing from Wikipedia that "it is a pastoral improvisation recorded by Evans at the end of the recording session" and that "Evans had many requests to play the piece live in his last years but he refused because he believed that the composition would lose its value and meaning as it had been an inspiration at the moment." The anonymous writer on Wikipedia also points at "although a peaceful song, however, it also features a lot of discordant notes throughout the latter half of the song which add tension." What more can I say? From now on it will be on my Top 100 songs. Many thanks, Fred.
22. Mercury Rev | Empire State (Son House in Excelsis): excellent song from the transitional period of Mercury Rev from the most eccentric and bizarre sound of their two first albums to the dreamy and majestic sound of "Deserter's Songs." An ambitious song (with a compelling trumpet solo) that recalls simultaneously both periods, sounding bizarre and majestic, if this is possible.
27. The Walker Brothers | No Regrets: the only song from the 70s period of the Walker Brothers I ever listened is "The Electrician" following sonofsamiam suggestions. I realize now that it was a mistake, this wonderful song features the trademark Scott Walker solemn voice and orchestral backing, adding this time some country flavours and some typical mid-70s soft-rock touches.
28. Billy Paul | Your Song: first time I listen to this cover of a well-known Elton John song from the same album that includes Billy Paul's biggest hit, "Me and Ms. Jones" (song that brings fond memories of my childhood, it was on a compilation that my daddy used to play while driving). I use to like the way black artists cover some whitey cheesy ballads but I should say that I didn't liked this one too much, I prefer for instance the cover of "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" that other Smooth Soul singer (Al Green) did that very same year (1972).
29. Anthony Braxton | Composition 40 F/Composition23 J: talking about difficult music to get into here we have a 26-minute-long track filled by dissonances and randomness. I can't deny the creativity and musicianship here (and I like the second part that begins at 13'45" especially the trombone solo) but I'll probably wait for quite a long time to listen to this song again.

And the next 15:
37. Sonny Sharrock | Many Mansions
41. The Isley Brothers | Summer Breeze
42. Zero 7 | Truth & Rights
43. Percy Faith | First Light (James Holden remix), I'm not sure if I listened the correct version, maybe it's not this one or this one. Could you provide a link?
44. Moby | New Dawn Fades
45. DJ Shadow | In/Flux ("Live! In Tune and on Time" version)
47. Archie Shepp | Hipnosis
50. Yo La Tengo | Pass the Hatchet, I Think I’m Goodkind
55. Donny Hathaway | Someday We'll All Be Free
56. Lou Christie Sacco | Paint America Love
57. Amon Düül II | Phallus Dei
59. Wipers | Youth of America
67. Mingus Big Band | Gunslinging Bird
72. Trentemöller | Into The Trees (Serenetti Part 3)
78. McCoy Tyner | Message from the Nile

Very interesting discoveries on the next 15, I particularly liked the songs by the Isley Brothers, Zero 7, Donny Hathaway, Lou Christie Sacco, Wipers and McCoy Tyner. I liked specially "Paint America Love," a song I've seen on your list and sonofsamiam's but never heard before.
First one question about your list, Fred. As far as I can see you made a ranked list of your Top 500 and then you have 5 Top 100s of songs ranked alphabetically for artists. Am I right? It's an easier way to classify and I could probably do something similar to expand my list to the actual 250 to 1000.
About your question on classic rock there are few songs on your list that I could label strictly as that (on your top 100 maybe only #18, #19, #61, #88 and #92). Other songs obviously entered the classic rock canon but I cannot consider it like this because the moment when they were released were highly idiosyncratic (sorry for my overuse of this word on my comments), breaking the molds of what was considered classic rock at this particular moment. The most obvious example is your #5 (and my #1): "Like a Rolling Stone" is classic rock now, not then. Then it was noise to many. Other classic rock songs on your Top 100 that can be considered out of the category for being groundbreaking at the time or too unique could be #15, #21, #30, #31, #32, #33, #36, #51, #52, #84, #94 and #97. At least that's my opinion.
Excellent list, Fred, I had a wonderful time discovering the hidden gems on it. Although my unknown songs ended at #78 I gladly continued listening to the whole Top 100 (despite having some songs clocking over 20 minutes). Lots of experimental material, lots of jazz (probably the most interesting part of your list, this adventurous type of jazz) and lots of unexpected choices from well-known artists, your list was like a treasure trunk. But your politics of choosing the unexpected create a low correlation between our lists (my approach is sometimes the opposite), with only 8 songs in common in our Top 250 (a 3,2%) and only 3 in out Top 100s ("Like a Rolling Stone," "Suzanne" and "Heroes"), the lowest correlation after Moonbeam's.
Many thanks Fred for your list!

First of all, thank you for Frankenstein. This song was a true shock for me - the only band that gave me similar experience were the Stooges, and I haven't suspected that someone can match them. A good reason to get more familiar with both the Dolls and your list!

As for classic rock - I thought about it quite a bit and came to conclusion that it is impossible or nearly impossible to find a simple definition of this term. I can only think of some qualities that describe it. For me classic rock is guitar - oriented music that does not incorporate many experimental elements - noise in particular. The band is usually classic quartet with vocals, guitar, bass and drums - or some variation on it, sometimes with keyboard, sometimes with second guitar etc. There is much emphasis put on members' technical skills. Music is easily accessible, it can't be offending or too aggresive, but it has no dance element. And it's about sales - which, in case of well-known classic rock bands, are very high. It's not a "convenient" definition, but it's the best I can think of.

I didn't have the time to participate in the latest all-time songs poll and as a result never checked out the individual lists. But scrolling through yours I can only conclude that this is a very good and adventurous list, Fred.

I continued during the weekend listening to your list and by now I've listened to your Top 150. Great next 50 and excellent unknown songs, I could point at many of these unknown ones but choosing only 10 they could be:
#101 (Rotary Connection)
#106 (Charlie Haden & Carla Bley)
#112 (David Axelrod)
#126 (Mark Lanegan)
#128 (The O'Jays)
#132 (Fairport Convention)
#135 (Orbital)
#138 (Joan Baez)
#145 (The Thrills)
#148 (Jackie McLean)

Very exciting someone took the time to listen to a part of my list!
Honorio wrote:Eight list (and not tenth, at least by my counts).

This rather simple song gives me much both emotionally and personally. Must have hit a nerve or something. Funny, it was all about the movie in the beginning although the song struck me somewhat. Now, the song is what remain.

My father told me he uses the "circular breathing technique" throughout the 26 minutes...

Alkberg buried this one on a bad album. Not sure it is an ode to Stockholm. I believe the song is about being able to live a thousand miles from Stockholm (He lives in northern Sweden, Mattias Alkberg). Maybe even a candidate for Henriks emminent list, although rather unknown in Sweden. Plus to the Clarence Clemmons saxophone! The song has a swedish feel a la Komeda or Atomic Swing, all the same age as me. We who grew up watching "Pelle Jansson" (tv-series where you identify with a boy in the dark Swedish autumn).

9. Cymande | Dove: an excellent sample of afro-jazz-funk with an amazing guitar work and Latin-flavoured percussions that reminisces early Santana and Osibisa. But I want to point to the relentless funk bass line and to some exotic touches of flute.

It just feels perfect, Dove, ah, the flute! Classic but not classic rock.

Yes, Honorio, it must be the most classic jazz style, but I only come to think of it when you mention it now! He sound almost the same in 1972 as in 1963...Mingus. Restrained horns. A good strating point for rockers who want to explore jazz.

He just decided to top Debussy (maybe). The "Ellaine" song by Evans is further down the list, 200 or so. Similar. He didn't play it live.

Sonofsamiam-rock!

It is a bit lifeless, but sometimes that's what you want. A few other covers (by Scott) from the same era that are just a step behind are "Many Rivers To Cross" and "Sundown". "The Electrician" is his own.

How could a perfect song become even more perfect? Yes, the Al Green version is great!

29. Anthony Braxton | Composition 40 F/Composition23 J: talking about difficult (indeed) music to get into here we have a 26-minute-long track filled by dissonances and randomness. I can't deny the creativity and musicianship here (and I like the second part that begins at 13'45" especially the trombone solo) but I'll probably wait for quite a long time to listen to this song again.

Anthony Braxton never went close to the marketing department. George Lewis on trombone is cool. I'll probably remove this from my next list for lack of...

And the next 15:
37. Sonny Sharrock | Many Mansions
41. The Isley Brothers | Summer Breeze
42. Zero 7 | Truth & Rights (This song is not well known.)

43. Percy Faith | First Light (James Holden remix), I'm not sure if I listened the correct version, maybe it's not or this one. Could you provide a link? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i64s9t6uO9M Could not find the remix version by James Holden. Steal it! The song works well with Gary Burton's "Las Vegas Tango" after it, followed by Sarah Vaughan's - Let's Make This City Ours tonight.

44. Moby | New Dawn Fades A song that works perfect in the film "Heat".
45. DJ Shadow | In/Flux ("Live! In Tune and on Time" version)
47. Archie Shepp | Hipnosis (maybe a bit repetitive...) there is a six minute remix version by...Ed and Gus or something
50. Yo La Tengo | Pass the Hatchet, I Think I’m Goodkind feels like a classic in the genre
55. Donny Hathaway | Someday We'll All Be Free
56. Lou Christie Sacco | Paint America Love
57. Amon Düül II | Phallus Dei
59. Wipers | Youth of America
67. Mingus Big Band | Gunslinging Bird
72. Trentemöller | Into The Trees (Serenetti Part 3) [Top electronica]

Yes, up to 500 I can feel the need for rating each song. Since I keep all songs (mp3) in folders with 100 songs in each, numbered from 0001-0100 and so on, it's easier to let 10 or 20 songs "advance" without having to search for them in the word document. If they already are listed alphabetically you could easily pick them for advancement to the higher bunch of 100 songs. And using the sorting function in Word quickly establish the alphabetical order. Nerd or neuroticism warning here.

At least that's my opinion. True!

I can feel my taste is getting closer to classic rock as many songs labelled as such seem to stick with my list rather than disappear...

Many thanks Fred for your list!
Maybe I'm trying to hard to be true to my taste. Rock has that ingredient of protest! :) Maybe because I'm just more interrested in Led Zeppelin than Eagles I've discovered more songs by them, thus somehow demoting "Stairway To Heaven", who all fans consider to be their seventh best or so... :)

The song often gives me goose bumps and feelings that it is too good to be true. Like Sugar's J.C. Auto before I got tired of it. "Frankenstein" is for real. As swedish speaking I just hope the lyrics are what I think they are.

A very rewarding description for me, incorporating a few limitations to the genre as well as what is good with it.

1. John Ottman – The Usual Suspects Main Theme

It's a great soundtrack theme, with a beginning that sounds like Satie, then expands to a whole orchestral piece. It makes me want to watch the movie again

2.Deodato – Super Strut

FANTASTIC brazilian funk soul instrumental like I love them, with an ounce of disco. Candidate for my top 1000. Funny and amazing to see 2 instrumentals topping your list.

6. Laura Nyro – TimerGreat song, that starts experimental then goes pop and crazy.

10. Charles Mingus – The Shoes Of The Fisherman’s Wife Are Some Jive Ass Slippers
All that I love in Mingus is there. It's adventurous but always sensual, sensitive, gutsy. Fantastic listening experience

This top 10 is full of gems!!

Just seeing this now. I'd like to put mine up at some point. Maybe I could be next.

BTW, Fred's list is ridiculously awesome and one of my favorites anywhere. I love all of the idiosyncratic picks and we certainly share quite a few.

I have been terrible about replying to these, but wanted to specifically thank Fred for these discoveries:

Colosseum - Valentyne Suite
McCoy Tyner - Walk Spirit, Talk Spirit
Anthony Braxton - Composition 40 F - Composition 23 J

Fred, if you like Braxton's Dortmund album, you should check out his Creative Orchestra (Koln) album, from the same period. Really amazing, extended workouts on many of the tracks from Creative Orchestra Music. Composition 58 is free-jazz marching band music, and is FAR more enjoyable than it sounds!
