Hall of Acclaim 2021 (CLOSED)

Post by Live in Phoenix »

Welcome to the new round of Hall of Acclaim voting!

Category 1, Performers: Nominate at least five and no more than ten acts that you feel are deserving of being in the AMF Hall of Acclaim. 2021 releases can be included in your evaluations. The point system: #1 = 10 pts., #2 = 9 pts., and so on. This poll is kind of the Wild West of our forum, so if you are so inclined, you can do something like push your most popular picks (instead of your biggest personal favorites) to the top spots in your submission. The acts with the four-highest points will be our four inductees.

Category 2, Backstage Wing: Additionally, if you'd like, you can have up to three “Backstage Wing” nominations. “Backstage Wing” types include songwriters, producers, record company founders/owners, music video directors, and critics/scholars. (Inductees have also included session musicians, wandering guest musicians, and record company house bands. Unofficial band members like Ian Stewart are "allowed" onstage in this category, as are guest musicians; but this isn't a category meant for a Performer's official backing band, who is often already lumped in together with the Performer.) The Backstage Wing point system: #1 = 3 pts., #2 = 2 pts., #3 = 1 pt. Whoever gets the most points will be our one inductee.

I will keep this poll up through the end of Monday, January 17, 2022, UTC timezone. In the case of a Backstage Wing tie, or a fourth-place Performers tie, a tie-breaker vote will go into effect for 3 days to determine the winner, in which case I will cast the last vote (or abstain) if need be.

The results will be sometime in January. With that all said and taken care of, let the voting begin!

The artist list is ranked based on the probability of them getting in.
There are some incredible oversights, especially regarding Ayler and Ottens (!) who should be here already.

1. Bon Iver
2. Albert Ayler
3. Faust
4. Pere Ubu
5. Herbie Hancock
6. Cecil Taylor
7. Carla Bley
8. Archie Shepp
9. Dave Van Ronk
10. Nina Hagen

Backstage:
1. Lou Ottens (inventor of the cassette tape and involved in developing the CD)
2. George Russell (good call on that, Live in Phoenix)
3. Manfred Eicher

Ah, you had Leiber's name spelled wrong, so it didn't come up when I searched him. I'll sub them out for Max Martin.

Right now I think John Williams is technically in 4th place, with just my vote. I doubt it will stay that way, but let's pretend it did for a moment -- I would be inclined to give the 4th induction spot to whichever performer actually got 2 votes, which is often our threshold for poll results.

No time for write-ups this time, because frankly I forgot about this. As usual I prefer artist with a somewhat longer career, as I feel a Hall of Fame place is something of a lifetime achievement award. Besides, there are still a lot of those to go before we need artist from the 2010's.

I'm thinking it's best if I just run the poll for a week or a week and a half. Basically don't give people a chance to stop thinking about it.

Guided by Voices
Lo-Fi / Slacker Rock, Indie Rock, Power Pop, Indie Pop, Jangle Pop, Alternative Rock

"It's with a certain amount of trepidation that I approach any new offering from the psycho-prolific GBV. 99% of their enormous output is undeniably choice 4-track pop-gunk of the hippest Midwest nature. My fright is that they will slip up and lay on us some mediocre indie-scuzz akin to so much of what you hear from younglings the world abound. But they don't. They never do. How do they do it and most other groups can't/don't? ... I think that maybe they're just fucking good at it" (Sonic Youth fanzine Sonic Death #6, c.1994, presumably Thurston Moore)

Manic Street Preachers
Alternative Rock, Pop Rock, Hard Rock, Britpop, Punk Rock, Power Pop

"A high IQ rock 'n' roll balanced with wilful self destruct. A pumped-up steroid-drenched metallic rock form from a band that oozed a delicious femininity. A band had a desire to conquer the world and an inbuilt self-destruction, a streak of musical conservatism with a revolutionary soul. Fuck, what a band! ... By the end of the decade they were the mainstream ... They had come a million miles from their starting point but somehow managed to retain the emotional kick and confused idealism that had always made them such a great band." Muse
Alternative Rock, Pop Rock, Art Rock, Electropop, Synthpop, Symphonic Rock

"Forgive Muse for their grandiosity; they may very well be the last rock band that truly wanted it all ... their albums have spanned an extraordinary and downright maddening range of genres, moods, and lyrical concepts, held together only by the vision of Matthew Bellamy, an immensely talented vocalist and a guitar god who knows no such thing as an idea too ridiculous or distasteful to try ... Naturally, listeners will either love or hate Muse for their lack of restraint and eclectic pop rock sensibilities, but even detractors are often in awe of the sheer ambition behind this Teignmouth trio." "Whenever I hear this group it gives me great hope that someone is still making good music in 2011." (Rate Your Music review / Old e-mail from my dad)

Run the Jewels
Hardcore Hip Hop, Political Hip Hop, Experimental Hip Hop, Novelty, Boom Bap, Video Game Music

"Run the Jewels were rap’s most thrillingly unlikely success story this [2010s] decade: El-P, an indie-rap lifer and Killer Mike, an Atlanta rap vet finding new inspiration in each other. When they joined forces, they rapped as if their lives (and ours) depended on it ... beneath the bluster, what sets RTJ2 apart is its humanity and prescience: on police brutality, on #MeToo, and on the burgeoning friendship between two world-hardened idealists." "Mike unloads [on RTJ4] on racist cops, systemic poverty, corporate media, and other eternal enemies. But the album never feels preachy, because the music bounces as much as it brays, with an elastic flow and deep history." (Pitchfork / Rolling Stone)

Thanks for running this! I'm not sure if I've ever heard any Guided by Voices song.

Considering there were this many nominations we could maybe include a second round the next time we do this.
Take the Top 10 and just have people vote for their four favorites.
This would enable everyone to have a say in who actually gets in.

(Not if it's too much work for Live in Phoenix, though)

It is indeed a surprise to see Guided by Voices and Muse get in before the likes of the Bee Gees.
I don't have a strong opinion either way about this year's entrants. I like all of them, without any of them being deep favorites of mine. Maybe Run the Jewels will get there for me, but as I said, I don't prefer 2010 acts yet in a Hall of Fame, even when both members of the group had a substantial career before that.

Random observations & thoughts:
Last time I had the poll open for about 2 and a half weeks (which is still maybe a while, considering voters only submit a handful of names). Having the poll open for a month may paradoxically be counterproductive. We had 10 voters this time, not bad, but we had more last time.

Between the 2020 and 2021 polls, there are voters who only voted for 2020 -- but then, there are also voters who only voted for 2021. Last time, I quipped, "9 submissions so far, so 90 performer names; 10 names are in common, so we are at least getting a top 10." So, people pretty often just vote for their particular favorites, and then there's not a lot of common ground.

Maybe some forum members were basically content about what was already in, and were content with not voting. (They don't owe me a vote. Incidentally, the people who vote for the Bee Gees for the all-time Artist poll don't really vote for the Hall of Acclaim, hence they look great in the Artist poll but bomb here.) Last time, the performer inductees got 33, 27, 25, and 23 points. I'm pondering that the next time around, if no one gets past a threshold of, say, 21 points (i.e. at least three votes), there could be a run-off vote among the 11-to-20 point candidates until we get our 4 inductees. Other options include having less than 4 performer inductees every single year from now on; or only inducting 1-3 performers if only 1-3 performers got X number of points. Or, just leave things pretty much the same (except for a tighter voting window).

What’s with all the surprises for Guided by Voices? If Pavement got in with the critics always subtly referencing them behind Pixies and Sonic Youth pretty frequently Guided by Voices should have been a shoe in over the Ben Stein of indie rock, the fat free, diet Pixies or the emotion free Sonic Youth for that matter. I’d much rather see GBV as the tier right behind Pixies and Sonic Youth. For me it’s more like “about freaking time!”

That's just personal bias talking. Guided by Voices are far and far less known than Pavement, Pixies or Sonic Youth, which is why it's a surprise to see them get in before some more famous acts.

We're not so near the end of the year, but I guess if I end up not running things again, or if I end up changing the rules significantly, it'd be better to get this figured out sooner rather than later.

So, last year, for the first time, none of the performer inductees received 20 points. I've been going over all the old results from previous polls, and I noticed that some acts were inducted with only 21 points (Blondie, X, Metallica, Dr. Dre, TV on the Radio) or 20 points (Eagles, Belle and Sebastian, Soda Stereo, who were inducted with two first-place votes), but out of all our 60-some induction classes, every single inductee hit a 20-point benchmark. I don't have a problem with last year's winners -- I figure their inductions were inevitable for that year, or an imminent year -- but I didn't like how they got in, with none of them receiving more than 2 votes out of 10 voters (with none of the winners receiving first-place votes, either).

I don't feel like we have no choice but to induct four performers every year. My stance is that it should be mildly difficult for an act to be inducted. For the next time around, my proposal is that if the four-highest vote totals are at 20 points or higher, then everything proceeds as usual. If only one, or two, or three acts get 20+ points, then only they get inducted. If NO act reaches 20 points, well, we can't have absolutely no one be inducted, but there would be a secondary vote among the acts with the four-highest vote totals, to at least induct one performer. That's one idea, at least, because I don't want to keep running things like last year.
