Songs and Albums of 1983 Poll

Post by Moonbeam »

Image

In 2013, we shall peruse the depths of the greatest decade of all, the 1980s!

This month, we will continue with yet another jaw-droppingly amazing year - 1983.

So go on and post a list of your favorite songs and/or albums of 1983. Only 15 will be given points, but the more, the merrier!

Feel free to check out the recommendation thread to find out some hidden gems or share some of your own! It's a great spot for preliminary lists.

The deadline is midnight (UTC) on June 1st.

To advance to the final list, songs/albums must have a minimum of 2 votes. In case of a tie, a tie-breaker will be set up.

Please use the following format when posting your list:

Rank. Artist - Album/Song

EPs and compilations are not allowed. Quibbles about release dates will be settled by RateYourMusic.

Now get to listening and voting!

The greatest decade of all time is the 1950s, followed by the 1960s. The 1980s is way down on the list, below the 1940s and the 1970s for sure, and maybe even below the 1930s.

You're entitled to your opinion :P

So, you know, anyways

Songs:

1. U2 – New Year's Day
2. Bananarama – Cruel Summer
3. Elvis Costello – Shipbuilding
4. Real Life – Send Me an Angel
5. Oingo Boingo – Nothing Bad Ever Happens to Me
6. Eurythmics – Here Comes the Rain Again
7. Billy Idol – Rebel Yell
8. Cyndi Lauper – All Through the Night
9. Cyndi Lauper – Girls Just Want to Have Fun
10. Billy Idol – Eyes Without a Face
11. Journey – Faithfully
12. Madonna – Lucky Star
13. Stevie Nicks – Stand Back
14. Eurythmics – Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)
15. R.E.M. – Talk About the Passion

(You probably couldn’t tell my pick for 1983’s album of the year, which is a little funny coming off a very singles-oriented album last year.)

Those artists combine for exactly one song in my top 2500 - "It's a Man's Man's Man's World" by James Brown.

I like James Brown, Ray Charles and Little Richard OK, but the others I am either indifferent towards (Elvis) or actively detest (The Beatles, Frank Sinatra).

That's the beauty of this forum, though - everyone brings a unique angle.

You are indifferent or detest three of the five greatest recording acts of all time.

You are indifferent or detest three of the five most significant recording artists of all time and you have the balls to make a derogatory comment about my list of 1983 favorites?
Where did I make a derogatory comment about your list?!

I really like your 5th, 7th, 12th, 14th and 15th songs listed.

Can we not get have this frivolous argument here? I'd prefer to not have this thread locked in the middle of the poll.

On a separate note, 1983 is the first year of the decade with a five star album: U2's masterpiece War. There are a lot of underrated gems on that record, as well as one of my top ten songs of all time, "Sunday Bloody Sunday".

I'm eager to give War another spin. I haven't listened to it in ages, but from memory, it's my favorite U2 album.

It's easily my favorite U2 album, too. Listyguy mentions the underrated gems, which are what makes the album so great. In fact, "Drowning Man" is not only my favorite U2 song, but it's also my favorite song from 1983.

"Drowning Man" is a great song. I think my favorite hidden gem on the album is "Seconds", though. I love the acoustic intro and the simple melody. "The Refugee" is damn good as well, and "Red Light" stands out for it's cool intro vocals and the trumpet solo...hell, the entire album is brilliant!

I could honestly see between 5 and 8 of the ten making my top 15 this month.

My birth year!

1. Tom Waits - Swordfishtrombones
2. REM - Murmur
3. Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes
4. U2 - War
5. Marillion - Script For A Jester's Tear
6. Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams
7. New Order - Power, Corruption and Lies
8. Echo and the Bunnymen - Porcupine
9. Cyndi Lauper - She's So Unusual
10. Metallica - Kill Em All
11. Bob Dylan - Infidels
12. Madonna - Madonna
13. ZZ Top - Eliminator
14. Aztec Camera - High Land, Hard Rain
15. U2 - Under A Blood Red Sky

For some reason I have 1999 listed as 1983, that should have been on my 1982 list. Not like its omission affected the results or anything.

I don't know if the 80s are the greatest music decade, but it's certainly the most underrated. It's the 'hidden gem' decade. (And I'm much more impressed by the entire 1965-1979 run than by the 50s icons. I'd put the 30s over the 50s just for Delta Blues).

Edit: Looks like I did list 1999 in 1982 as well. But when I filtered my program by 1983 it came up. Odd.

I've got a problem with 1983.

Since 2007 (the year I became an AMer), I have rated and ranked practically all the albums I've listened (1618 albums at the moment). The ranking is more or less a purcentage (like Jirin's ranking) but the score can exceed 100 (bonuses).
In my decade poll list I only include albums that got a score higher than 77 (the limit is #900 at the moment).

In 1983, I have 25 albums ranked, but only 5 above 77!!
Most of them were rated in 2008 when we did the first 80's poll. But my tastes have broadened and my rankings are now less harsh than 5 years ago, so I guess I'll have to do some mistening and re-listening... And with my exams at the end of the month, I might end up with less than 15 albums for the first time.

But 1983 is also great for singles.

Anyway, my ongoing (and growing I hope) list

Is Bob Dylan - Blind Willie McTell 1983 or 1991?
In the last 80's Poll it appeared in 1983 but it is in RYM as 1991. I believe the rules are that RYM is the criteria used for the correct year but I just wanted to clarify. Thanks.

It was recorded in 1983, but released in 1991 (because even Bob knew that the song wasn't worthy of such a terrible album), and it was in the 90's poll, so no, it is not eligible for this year.

The only album for this year that looks remotely interesting is in my opinion what I would consider the most UNACCLAIMED groundbreaking album in Alternative Rock History and that would be Head Over Heels by the Cocteau Twins. This was the FIRST from begining to end DREAMPOP ALBUM EVER!!!!! One of the most acclaimed genres that was so influcial it spawned several subgenres including shoegaze. Maybe it's because a WOMAN was part of this band that they never get the credit the truly deserve. Other than riot grrl female musicians are rarely given credit for pioneering new sounds in music. Plus people tend to name drop other bands if this band comes up in names of bands that influenced dreampop. But they were the first. Yes Eno and the Velvets may have laid the groundwork for the genre but people never take away credit from the Ramones for being the very first punk band. I know they're not everyone's cup of tea. People can't stand her falscetto harmonies where as with a band like MBV even if you can't stand Kevin or Bindy's vocals they are fuzzed out anyway. Actually just her vocals alone have been highly influencial on several dreampop, twee and trip hop performers including Bjork and Sigur Ros. When you add in Robin's incredible work the list of bands influenced by them just keeps growing and growing. So happy 30th DREAMPOP!!! It never would have happened without HEAD OVER HEELS.

Albums:

1. R.E.M. -- Murmur
2. Billy Idol -- Rebel Yell
3. Cyndi Lauper -- She's So Unusual
4. U2 -- War
5. Oingo Boingo -- Good for Your Soul
6. Marshall Crenshaw -- Field Day
7. Culture Club -- Colour by Numbers
8. The Rolling Stones -- Undercover
9. David Bowie -- Let's Dance
10. Slayer -- Show No Mercy

Pitchfork referred to the Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour as music that can seem like "a private obsession rather than a permanent part of our shared culture," and many '60s acts who kept plugging away made an album like that for me: Bob Dylan's Street Legal, David Bowie's Tonight, and the Rolling Stones' Undercover. (You may have your own candidates.) Just some good tunes or delightful fucking around that didn't compare well with the nearby glory days.

I wonder if "Here Comes the Rain Again" will have enough votes to get in. It's received a few points so far, and it should be pretty high on my list (although this year has two songs from my all-time top 10, so it's harder than usual), and I know Moonbeam will have it high (I hope)...

I don't think it will make my top 15. :( 1983 is just ridiculously deep. As it stands, "Here Comes the Rain Again" is at #22 for 1983. Here's how it would fare in other years where I've ranked at least 15 songs:

1967: 3
1968: 1
1969: 2
1970: 1
1971: 5
1972: 7
1973: 6
1974: 1
1975: 2
1976: 5
1977: 5
1978: 8
1979: 5
1980: 21
1981: 22
1982: 29
1984: 13
1985: 14
1986: 13
1987: 15
1988: 10
1989: 21
1990: 8
1991: 4
1992: 6
1993: 6
1994: 2
1995: 7
1996: 1
1997: 13
1998: 4
1999: 2
2000: 8
2001: 10
2002: 2
2003: 7
2004: 11
2005: 2
2006: 2
2007: 7
2008: 4
2009: 7
2010: 7
2011: 3
2012: 1
2013: 1

The limit to 15 is a killer for me in the 1980s. I would have preferred a system where more items would get points - even perhaps with no limit. I wouldn't mind personally if my list had less impact on the results for the 1960s than somebody else who loved the 1960s. It's just the nature of the beast, I suppose.

Very cool to see these, but they're both from 1982! Care to replace them?
