not sure everything here is really from 1940, no time to check, but :

I'm not sure Leadbelly's Midnight Special is from 1940. I use recording dates, and the first recording of this song was made in 1934 at Angola Prison. If the first release was from 1940, it would be my number one here.

1. Jazz Gillum - Key To The Highway
2. Django Reinhardt - Nuages
3. Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys - New San Antonio Rose
4. Woody Guthrie - Blowin' Down This Road
5. Edith Piaf - L'Accordéoniste
6. Woody Guthrie - Vigilante Man
7. Delmore Brothers - Raining In The Mountain
8. Woody Guthrie - Dusty Old Dust (So Long It's Been Good To Know You)
9. Bukka White - Fixin' To Die Blues
10. Ida Cox - Last Miles Blues
11. Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys - Time Changes Everything
12. Rhythm Willie - Breathtaking Blues
13. Art Tatum - Tiger Rag
14. Erskine Hawkins and his Orchestra feat. Avery Parish - After Hours
15. Jimmie Davis - You Are My Sunshine
16. Moon Mullican - Pipeliner Blues
17. Francisco Alves - Aquarela Do Brasil
18. Francisco Alves - Serra de Boa Esperança
19. Robert Nighthawk - Friar Point's Blues
20. Blind Boy Fuller - Step It Up And Go

Thanks Nick.

Heres the criteria for the list:

These records were chosen and ranked based on their initial & lasting popularity, and on their impact on the overall scope of musical history.

You can throw in some acclaim into it too. Not necessarily critical acclaim, but awar5ds like Grammy Hall of Fame and things like that.

Really good stuff, some thoughts just using my gut...

1. Star Dust - Artie Shaw / Tommy Dorsey (Frank Sinatra)
2. New San Antonio Rose - Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys

Solid 1-2, hard to argue.

6. You Are My Sunshine - Jimmie Davis

This might be worth moving to No. 3, the song is so famous, but much more multi-layered than it immediately appears.

9. When You Wish Upon A Star - Cliff Edwards / Glenn Miller

Glad you moved this one up, I'm a sentimental sucker.

14. The Midnight Special - Leadbelly (Golden Gate Quartet)

This might be worthy of the Top 10, it's remained quite well-known due to rock covers.

22. Mule Skinner Blues - Bill Monroe

Might also be worth moving up...

48. Nuages - Django Reinhardt

One could argue this for the Top 10...it's Django's signature song.

Of the rest, consider these for Top 50:

Flying Home - Lionel Hampton (Ziggy Elman - trumpet): Hampton's most famous track
Never No Lament - Duke Ellington: Became "Don't Get Around Much Anymore", a great standard
Night And Day - Billie Holiday: The song of course is an all-time famous one, not sure if it's covered in other years
I Ain't Got No Home in This World Anymore - Woody Guthrie: One of his best
Concerto for Cootie - Duke Ellington: Also amazing, these were incredible years for Ellington

On "Flying Home" the famous one is the 1942 version with Illinois Jacquet.

Looks really good. I'd still plug for "Nuages" to move up, but it's your list. Sensible call on "Flying Home", too.

Thanks for the info. Could you tell me which ones if you have the time?

And what are the sources you use for release dates ? I have a lot of information about recording dates, but not too many about release dates

I use RYM and also this site:

http://www.78discography.com/

as well as a lot of books that I have here.

These records....

10. Ida Cox - Last Miles Blues
13. Art Tatum - Tiger Rag
16. Moon Mullican - Pipeliner Blues

The Ida Cox was from 1941. http://rateyourmusic.com/artist/ida_cox

On the Mullican there seems to have been a version recorded in 1940, but I can't find any info on a release. He did the song many times and other versions came out on King and maybe Capitol, but I don't see any 1940 release.

"Tiger Rag" seems to be from 1933:

Savoy - I very much appreciate you bringing DDD to the more focused attention of the forum. I have frequently found the lists there to be very helpful in my effort to expand my musical horizons.

There's over 50 lists there that I edit. Here's an interesting one that I did last year:

Bad news guys. I just discovered that "The Midnight Special" by Lead Belly is actually from 1941. I had to delete it from the 1940 list.

The record was recorded in mid-1940 but was not released until after a couple of other Victor records that were recorded in Jan 1941, so it could not have been released in 1940.
