Albums and Songs of 1962 Polls

Post by Holden »

1962

AM Links: Albums, Songs

Next up is 1962! I will be tallying the albums, and Schüttelbirne will be tallying the songs. If you want to participate, please post a list of your favorite songs and/or albums from that year in this thread. Only the top 20 will be given points, but larger lists are always welcomed and encouraged. On the other end of the spectrum, you need to list at least 5 songs/albums in order for your list to count towards the tabulation.

The top 10 albums and songs from each year will automatically qualify for the final decade poll. Additionally, there will be 50 wild card spots available to the songs and albums that miss the top 10. Wild cards will be determined using the points received in the yearly polls, with the point totals normalized by the number of lists that are submitted in that year. Wild cards also allow songs and albums with unclear release years to receive votes in both years. Points are awarded using this system:

Code: Select all

Rank Points
1	50
2	45
3	40
4	36
5	32
6	28
7	25
8	22

13	12
14	11
15	10
16	9
17	8
18	7

20	5
The deadline to vote is midnight (UTC aka Forum Time) on April 30th.

Compilations are not allowed. If you're unsure about a release date, consult RateYourMusic.com and AcclaimedMusic.net.

Thanks to Listyguy for running last year's 1970s poll from which I have stolen pretty much this whole intro and format.

Maybe April is the cruelest month after all, since 1962 might be the weakest year of the '60s.

Does anyone have a Spotify link to what would be considered the "original" Kontakte recording? There's a few on results on Spotify so I just want to make sure I'm choosing the right one.

This is the earliest release of a recording of the work I could find (and the one on my list).
On Spotify it's this album:

This recording: https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album ... chlagzeug/ was recorded in 1960, but released in 1964 and I think it's the one also featured on AM. I don't think it's on Spotify (I can't find it at least), but it's on Youtube:

Isn't Wipe Out in 1963? RYM says so. Wikipedia says January 1963. Whitburn says 1963. I know it did not become a hit until the summer when it got reissued, but Whitburn has the original release in 1963. I was curious about your sourcing because that's a big song for me in 1963.

"Wipe Out" on Dot was released in 1963, but that's not the original label. Dot bought the master from this small label that the record first came out on in 1962.

1962 is correct. However, last time they have them qualify for 1961. I’m gonna let it go with either, like Max Roach, and combine the points in the wild cards. As long as no one votes for it twice (as in both in 1962 and 1961) there shouldn’t be an issue in the long run.

A list of albums to come later along with the "bubbling under" discoveries I make.

And a story regarding #14: Having inherited a 45 from my father, this song is a long-time favourite but I haven't always completely understood the lyrics. Before understanding "chick" to be slang for a girl, tween me had a mental image of the song's protagonist "dancing with the CHICKEN slacks" which I imagined to be uncomfortable and foul (fowl?) smelling. (I know the line now to be "Dancing with the chick 'in slacks')

If you're looking for discoveries, here are some I believe might be a little less well-known that are worth checking out:

145 | Mike Clifford | Close to Cathy
Poor guy's stuck in the friend zone...but taking the chance that one day Cathy will let him get closer

141 | The Beach Boys | Chug a Lug
An album cut that should have been singled instead of "Ten Little Indians". Lest you think the Boys are ditching the squeaky-clean image, the liquid being chugged is root beer. Pretty cool organ solo.

123 | Connie Francis | Vacation
Different lyric from the 80s Go-Gos tune. A much more rockin' tune than I'm used to from Francis. Sort of a second tier ode to the joys of Summer a la The Jamies or Nat King Cole's "Lazy Hazy Crazy...."

122 | The Downbeats | Your Baby's Back
Motown obscurity. Nice doo-wop tune. "My Boyfriend's Back" from the guy's POV and without the edge of menace.

116 | Mose Allison | Your Mind is on Vacation
Nice jazzy slightly politically incorrect number about a loquacious female featuring this couplet: "If silence is golden, you couldn't make a dime/Your mind is on vacation but your mouth is working overtime."

103 | The Majors | A Wonderful Dream
Mostly forgotten "girl group sound" number. (The rest of the group is guys but Idella Morris takes center mic on this.) Nice crisp drums.

100 | Bill Pursell | Our Winter Love
Really surprised to hear that fuzz bass on an EZ listening instrumental. From 1962 even.

94 | Pat Boone | Johnny Will
I know, I know. It won't make up for some of his travesties but this is a pretty good number about Pat's anxiety about an interloper trying to take his girl to a dance while he's cash poor.

89 | Elvis Presley | Girls! Girls! Girls!
Lightweight but fun title number from the movie that gave us the much more famous "Return to Sender".

86 | Jimmy Dean | The Cajun Queen
Did you know there was a sequel to "Big Bad John"? Did you know it tries to sexify light necrophilia?

69 | The Davis Sisters | Can't Do Nothin' 'Til He Comes
Catchy gospel handclapper

64 | Sue Thompson | James (Hold the Ladder Steady)
"Norman" was the big hit but I dig this more. Thompson's decided not to take her parents' "No" for an answer and is making a late night run to elope.

63 | Mel Tormé | Comin' Home Baby
A nice jazz cut with a slinky piano bass figure and some organ accents. Mock Raelettes BGVs add some zip to it.

49 | The Exciters | Tell Him
Discovered this song backwards via a Kenny Loggins cover. Quickly found his rendition vastly inferior to the chipper bubbliness of the original.

19 | Barbra Streisand | Happy Days Are Here Again
A lovely slowed down melancholy rendition of the Depression era tune. Give it a go...even if you think you don't like Streisand.

Actually I'm pretty sure I "stole" that Tormé cut from another Forumer but I'm glad you like it too. AFAIK, I'm the first to mention The Davis Sisters though.

If I never hear another song with "Twist" in the title not performed by Chubby Checker or Sam Cooke (and that one is more than enough, Sam!), it will be too soon. :angry-banghead: :angry-banghead:

Re: my number 23 song, it was attributed first in 1962 to Saundra Mallet & the Vandellas but the same recording appeared on Darling Baby by The Elgins, ergo the double credit. Also, I wish I'd known my top tracks from the Shirelles album were 1961 singles!

80 ¦ Wipe Out ¦ Surfaris
I can see this was recorded in 1962 but I haven't seen any source claiming it was released earlier than January 1963 including 45cat
http://www.45cat.com/artist/the-surfaris/2

Where is that 1962 date from? If you're right I need to make room in my list for this. Otherwise, I'll wait for 1963.

Most places say January 1963 so leave it in 1963.
