Mari Hamada – Don’t Change Your Mind: 6
Sure, it is metal in the most cheesy tradition, but I get some enjoyment out of it.

Gang Starr – Just to Get a Rep: 4
Am I the only one who feels this song is underdeveloped? I'm not kidding if I said I had to check back to see if I hadn't accidentally listened to a demo version or something. I've heard worse hip-hop for sure, but perhaps never one with so little force or immediacy. No matter the serious subject matter, it is hard to make this seem more than background music.

It's pretty and maybe it works as the album closer, but on it's own there is not much to it.

Blood, Sweat & Tears - Variations on a Theme By Erik Satie (1st Movement)
(No rating -- I already know that *I* rate it highly.)

I think I picked up this album for free outside of a record store, from a crate of mostly water-damaged LPs, way back when I was in high school. For a moment this morning, I thought, wait, the first track has the 2nd movement too, and totals two and a half minutes. Maybe I should have gone with that one? But the second movement is hideous in their hands. The 1st movement is performed with a unique sense of taste and restraint on their part. I've thought of it at times as the theme song for a show that has yet to exist. Anyway, the music is adapted from Trois Gymnopédies. At one time I thought it must be rendered better by an altogether different musician (for instance, some classical CD I once got from the library; Bill Quist's "2nd Gymnopedie [1888]", as found on a new age label), but somehow Blood, Sweat & Tears uncharacteristically did a better cover version.

Les McCann & Eddie Harris – Compared to What: 8

I just listened to this right after Anthony Braxton's For Alto, which is jazz on the other end of the spectrum: from rough improvisation to smooth and accessible. Compared to What is damn likable, regardless of being a protest song. It goes down easy and remains an engaging listen for all its 8 minutes.

The song was written by Gene McDaniels and it made his life. The international royalties were huge. The same Gene McDaniels who had several hits in the early 60s.

A very, very obscure band today, that barely seems to have existed, but somehow managed to make it into the American Pie soundtrack anyway. But not to Spotify, so we have to turn to YouTube today.

Bachelor Number One – I am the Summertime: 6

Extremely 1990's. I'm not even sure if I ever saw American Pie (I remember the most famous scenes, but that could just be as well because that movie was referenced all the time in those years), but I sure don't recognize this song. Yet if you would try to feed late nineties pop rock into an AI it might just produce this, for better or worse. It's instantly nostalgic, without the song itself holding any nostalgia for me.

On a side-note, I wonder if the YouTube-clip is the real clip of the song. It seems to be, but there are quite a few shots of a girl singing out loud with the boys, but no female voice is heard there. Oops.

Lana Del Rey - Off to the Races: 8

Sure, it is Lana Del Rey giving it to the most trashy side of her personality, but damn she makes this song soar. The chorus is very catchy.

I say bring trashy Lana Del Rey back! The use of samples and overall trip hop feel and production of Born to Die is awesome and I’d love to here her return to that.

I liked the previous rockabilly songs Hymie brought to this game, but this one is rather forgettable. Misses something to really make it pop.
