Artist of the Month Song/Album Polls - April '21 - The Velvet Underground!

Post by Holden »

Following with the poll from last month, in which I asked you to post your favorite Miles Davis songs and albums in ranked lists and then compiled them, this month we will be moving on to the next artist on the list, The Velvet Underground! Please post as many songs/albums in your lists as you would like! We'll only be doing studio albums (even Squeeze!), no live albums, so I'll post a list of eligible ones below. Thank you and have fun! Deadline will be April 30th, and I will be continuing to use the EOY Albums/Songs formula for this one.

Also, a reminder that the Miles Davis poll was extended to April 7th to accomidate his enormous catalog!

Albums:
01 | The Velvet Underground & Nico | 1967
02 | White Light/White Heat | 1968
03 | The Velvet Underground | 1969
04 | Loaded | 1970
05 | Squeeze |1973
06 | VU | 1985

Albums:
1. The Velvet Underground & Nico (10/10)
Their best set of songs, with the most copied sound in alternative rock. This album arguably made alternative rock even seem necessary.

2. White Light/White Heat (9)
They'd try to be more commercial later, but here was their F.U. in response to their debut tanking. "Sunday Morning" from their debut and "Sister Ray" here are my two favorite Velvets songs and represent their two different sides.

3. VU (8)
This collection is their best example of lightening up. This is practically tied with their self-titled album.

4. The Velvet Underground (8)
Not as thrilling as their first two (plus Doug Yule starts here, a smoother but inexpert version of Lou Reed). It's solid in its own right, though.

5. Loaded (7)
A little too smooth (and it didn't get them any hits anyway), plus the heaps of Doug Yule inadvertently opened the door for a false Velvet Underground album.

6. Squeeze (6)
Shockingly adequate. Especially coming off of my re-visit of the Shaggs, Squeeze seems like a masterpiece among albums that are considered fucking terrible. It is simply the work of a fairly average musician in his element, with occasional flashes of talent (and with some dopey songs about women). There's garbage by the top 100 AM artists that I'd rather hear less.

===================================

1. The Velvet Underground And Nico (10/10)
2. The Velvet Underground (10)
3. White Light/White Heat (10)
4. Loaded (8)

The band's '67 debut is one of the greatest records ever made in my view. Their self titled third album gets the nod over the sonic abrasiveness of the brilliant White Light/White Heat for its serene beauty and the sheer quality of Lou Reed's songwriting. Both albums, however, should be among the 50 greatest albums in any self-respecting greatest albums of all time list. And Loaded, whilst fantastic, is not the record any of the first three are.

The band's 1985 outtakes compilation album VU (9/10) is a superior album to Loaded. I acknowledge the rules of the competition, but thought VU warranted a special mention. Compilation albums generally should not be considered for greatest albums of all time lists or polls such as this one, but there are always exceptions to any rule. The nature of VU as a collection of lost album tracks, most of which would have been released under the MGM Records label as a studio album in 1969, before the label underwent a series of unforeseeable transformations which resulted in the tracks being shelved, does make the record more than just a compilation album. Similar to Hatful of Hollow by The Smiths (10/10), both of these albums are compilation albums only in the technical use of the term.

As an addendum to my last post, I am pleased to see VU ranked #1595 in the Acclaimed Music all time list. As well as Hatful of Hollow at #638 in the list. I'd be interested if somebody could tell me how Acclaimed Music approach compilation albums, and what criteria they use to determine eligibility for the list.

Hi Holden,

Could VU be added as an album? It’s on this site and it is no less of an album than Physical Graffiti by Led Zep or Tattoo You by the Rolling Stones to name a few.

I've included archival albums before, so sure, we can include VU.

I don't really think of VU as an album anymore, but I've now included it in my rankings.

Not a lot of love here for White Light/White Heat so far...It'll be third on my list but I'm surprised to see it may finish behind Loaded in the poll.

Songs to come later maybe?

The Velvet Underground & Nico might be my most-listened to album of all time. I can't imagine it ever leaving my Top Ten. I understand any ranking of their first four albums, but I can't comprehend putting VU above White Light/White Heat. Also, Squeeze is a very underwhelming terrible album. Like it's not that bad at all, very inoffensive stuff.

1 | The Velvet Underground & Nico
2 | White Light/White Heat
3 | Loaded
4 | The Velvet Underground
5 | VU
6 | Squeeze

I thought this might happen at some point, though more likely during the next 10 months bonus game. (I don't plan on Squeeze being my #46 of 46. Of the likely set of 46 albums, the only ones I'm not too familiar with are a couple of Kanye albums, and even if I find him sort of annoying, there's no way he's scraping the bottom.)

The Underground has a lot of songs I enjoy but they also have a fair amount of tunes that suffer due to a lack of editing. #48 would move up to 31 if it faded at 7:30 rather than going on another 10 minutes after that. That is part of what ended WHITE LIGHT/WHITE HEAT at the bottom of my album list.

SONGS

50 | We're Gonna Have a Real Good Time Together (1974)
49 | That's the Story of My Life (1969)

I'd probably like Sister Ray less if it was less of an epic. While I admit you have to be in the right mood to appreciate it, when the song hits you right it's easy to get lost in the bizarre mixture of guitar and organ.

I would agree some of the Velvet's experiments fall flat, though it's their willingness to try so many things that adds to their charm. European Son had the potential to be one of the best songs in their catalogue based on its first minute, but the freakout goes on for too long and is not as engaging as similar segments in Sister Ray.

The infinite influence:
"Brian Eno once said: "Maybe the first Velvet Underground album only sold 30,000 copies, but everyone who bought it formed a band." And the sentence became a mantra for lazy opinion-makers and one of those supposedly irrevocable axioms of rock history. But how much truth is there in this cliché inherited generation after generation?
Only for being the pioneer band developing a rock language not based on blues or other American roots music but on a certain European song and atonal avant-garde, The Velvet Underground are already the starting point from which an infinite number of other paths begin. (…) You can almost fit entire style books of later acts into specific songs by the band: from "Jesus" it comes Low, from "Stephanie Says" Belle & Sebastian, from "The Ocean" Galaxie 500, from "Cool It Down" Royal Trux, from "What Goes On" The Wedding Present, The Feelies and even the first Stereolab… However, it may be wiser to identify only three main threads (not exclusive categories either):
1) The Velvets as the seed of arty experimentation applied to rock: from the pagan rites of songs like "All Tomorrows's Parties" (a whole festival is called like that!) and from the electric eruptions of the album "White Light / White Heat" grew the no wave, some Joy Division twists or the first Nick Cave, Einstürzende Neubaten, Sonic Youth, Swans, The Jesus & Mary Chain, Spacemen 3, Los Planetas, The Dirty Three or Mogwai.
2) The Velvets as initiators of a certain type of cottony song, between the junkie lullaby, the pop hypersensitivity and the children's cabaret: Young Marble Giants, Tracey Thorn, Violent Femmes, R.E.M. at their most fragile, Beat Happening, Cowboy Junkies or the Moldy Peaches could be filed under this category. Also Jonathan Richman, of course, that even made a tribute song called "The Velvet underground." (…)
3) The Velvets as the big bang of an insistent, urban, vicious and cultured rock, that of "I'm Waiting for the Man," "Can't Stand It" or "Rock & Roll": without those songs as a mirror, The Stooges, David Bowie (at his most streetwise, like in "Queen Bitch"), the Swell Maps, Television Pesonalities, the Dream Syndicate, Derribos Arias, Parálisis Permanente, Echo & the Bunnymen, Pixies ("I wanna be a singer like Lou Reed," sang Black Francis in "I've Been Tired"), Los Bichos, Surfin' Bichos, Diabologum or even LCD Soundsystem ("Drunk Girls"!) might have had a different reflection."
(from "The infinite influence," an article written by Joan Pons for Rockdelux, published in December of 2013 after Lou Reed's death, edited and translated by myself)

Agree with Joan Pons wholeheartedly. Only the three songs from the first album that appear on my Top 5 songs list singlehandedly created three styles (respectively dream pop, art rock and punk rock) that blossomed 10 or even 20 years after.

Albums:

1. The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967, my #16 album of all-time)
A series of fortunate collisions generated this masterpiece: the collision between the street-wise rock & roll of Lou Reed and the classical background of John Cale, between inquisitive and intuitive musicians like Reed & Cale (not forgetting the important contributions of Morrison, Tucker and the mysterious guest Nico) and Andy Warhol (the pop-art Pope at the time), between heroin and pushers urban stories and the decadent glamour of The Factory transvestites and starlets, between rock & roll and art.

2. The Velvet Underground (1969)
Legend says that the clean sound of the album was the result of the band's gear and fuzz pedals being stolen. A fruitful theft.

3. White Light/White Heat (1968)
At 2:15 in "I Heard Her…" a deafening high-pitched feedback took the ones who dared through a wormhole to the future of music.

4. VU (1985)
Their pop album, the counterpoint to the avant-garde first, the experimental second, the opiate third and the classic-rock fourth.

5. Loaded (1970)
Atlantic wanted hits and they delivered an album loaded with should-have-been hits that didn't prevent the band disintegration.

6. Squeeze (1973)
Another View (1986)

Songs:
(every Velvet Underground song ranked, except the hard-to-find ones appearing on the box sets "Final V.U. 1971-1973" and "What Goes On")

1. Sunday Morning (1966, my #42 song of all time)
I always have half-assumed that Nico was the singer of this moody song but I was puzzled some years ago when I read that Lou Reed sang the song with his sweetest and softest voice. I didn't believe it initially but the more times I listened to the song the more I realized that this voice didn't come from the icy blonde German beauty but from Lou-Lou. Quite disturbing. Boys that sound like girls, girls who look like boys (Mo Tucker), the Velvets among other things also predated the gender confusion of today.

2. Candy Says (1969)
The first (and best) song of the "… Says" series. Reed (through Doug Yule's voice) voicing the feelings of a transgender woman.

3. Venus in Furs (1967)
John Cale's chilling viola drone illustrates bold lyrics about sadomasochism. The moment when rock music entered into adulthood.

4. Pale Blue Eyes (1969)
Tying my profession and my passion some years ago I've made a list of songs about eyes. This one was the number one, of course.

5. I'm Waiting for the Man (1967)
There had been a long-time relationship between drugs and musicians but no one dared to board the subject so directly before.

6. Stephanie Says (1985)
7. Sweet Jane (1970)
8. All Tomorrow's Parties (1966)
9. Heroin (1967)
10. I Heard Her Call My Name (1968)
11. Who Loves the Sun (1970)
12. Jesus (1969)
13. Femme Fatale (1966)
14. Sister Ray (1968)
15. After Hours (1969)
16. Temptation Inside Your Heart (1985)

Oh yeah, since VU now counts, the spectacle of seeing what if anything that people would rate above Squeeze in the 10 artist bonus game has now been thwarted. I probably would have placed it above one of the Clash albums, and a Beach Boys album or two.

I don't at all understand this emerging consensus that White Light/White Heat is not only worse than Loaded, but also worse than VU.

In my opinion, White Light/White Heat is worlds ahead of both Loaded and The Velvet Underground. White Light/White Heat is an incredible experience. It has to be one of the most fun and self-indulgent albums I've ever heard and I love every second of it! I can understand how one might be a bit put off by it, it's certainly the least accessible of the four big VU albums, but I still think it's sort of a masterpiece that trumps each of VU's other albums aside from VU&N by a pretty wide margin.
