My slightly edgy opinion:

Ultralight Beam is a bit corny. This has been my feeling since the first time I heard it in the theatre premiere. Something about it is just a little bit off, IMO.

Actually this list overall has less of my picks than Pitchfork lists in the years past I think.

Well, four songs by Kanye in this already. Is it their AOTY? That'd be a bummer for me :D Since Nick Cave is my AOTY, him having only one song featured is already a disappointment. It probably won't be my favourite Pitchfork year.

I think Chance the Rapper will be Pitchfork's No. 1 album, that or Frank Ocean.

I really like Ultralight Beam, that and Waves are the best thing on what is Kanye's weakest album by far to date.

"Ultralight Beam" isn't my SOTY, but it's a more than worthy pick. Out of the top ten I would've preferred "Lazarus", "Cranes in the Sky", or "Drone Bomb Me" as the SOTY, but "Ultralight Beam" is still a fantastic song.

I could see "Blonde" being their AOTY.

1. "Blonde" has 3 songs on the top 100 just like "The Life of Pablo".

2. "Blonde" got a 9.0 from Pitchfork, making it tied for the second highest rated album of the year (behind the dual 9.1s awarded to Radiohead and Chance the Rapper).

3. Unlike Kanye West, Frank Ocean has never gotten the AOTY from Pitchfork before.

Wow, was this year hip-hop/neo-soul/pop R&B dominated! Not that Pitchfork doesn't always skew towards Hip-Hop/Pop R&B on their best songs lists...but this year, Wow!

Few inclusions I love - Sturgil Simpson - Sailor's Guide is one of the most unusual country albums I've heard in ages, not a masterpiece, but so outside the Nashville norm - he's like the Young Kanye West of his genre - a musical omnivore for whom combining sounds with genres outside the traditional spectrum just comes naturally.

Also love Angel Olsen's Sister - love the album, but like that track way more than Shut Up Kiss Me.

Amongst my most eggregious ommisions.

1. A second song from Car Seat Headrest - Teens of Denial wasn't just the best Indie-Rock album of the year, it was sadly, quite possibly, the only decent indie-rock album of the entire year - just a truly dreadful year for music of this vein. But Teens was awesome, my personal favorite release of 2016, and while I echo others sentiment for where was Drunk Drivers, I personally would push even harder for Vincent, which to my ears was the #1 song I heard in 2016 - just so freaking badass.

2. I knew Michael Kiwanuka wouldn't make their list, Pitchfork is just too blatant in their anti-classic rock bias to promote an artist so anchored in traditional late 60s/early 70s soul and prog-rock sounds - But Cold Little Heart and Love & Hate are both better than at least 70-80 percent of the songs on their list.

3. Other omissions that surprised
a) Single song from Skeleton Tree - would have thought one of The Title Track, Distant Sky, or Jesus Alone would have landed a spot.
b) Something from White Lung's Paradise, a band they've very actively championed
c) Anxiety - Preoccupations
d) Best Kept Secret - Case/Lang/Veirs
e) Gardenia - Iggy Pop
f) I Exhale - Underworld
g) A nod to King Gizzard And Wizzard Lizard's Nonagon Infinity - though I get this one, the songs themselves are for the most part interchangeable - a very likely spot on their album list is probably the best and only legit way to reward that work.
h) Me & Magadalena - The Monkees - Again, know Pitchfork has a keen anti-classic rock cannon bias - but this seemed like the perfect track to surprise readers with this year. No to mention it's just a gorgeous pop song.

4. Songs that don't belong
a) 33 God - Bon Iver - I love Bon Iver, but my biggest gripe with pitchfork is they routinely champion the ephermerally novel over that music which will still sound good 10 years from now (See 95% of Animal Collective's catalog or Most of Yellow House or almost anything by Ariel Pink or No Age). This is a pick in that classic pitchfork vein, a song we'll all be saying "what did I possibly see in this?" a few years down the line.
b) True Love Waits - I adore this song - that shitty 2001 live acoustic guitar version, not this dreary reworking done in what has become Radiohead's signature worst niche - the plodding Tom at the Piano ballad. Seriously, I still love this band, but I never want Tom to sit down at a Piano again in their career - have hated every piano ballad in their cannon since the admittedly brilliant Pyramid Song - Sail To The Moon, Videotape, this version of True Love Waits - regardless of any lyrical merits they are all so fucking musically tedious.

It may be my favorite album of the year, period. I just listened to it again yesterday after not hearing it for a while, and it only grows and gets even better with repeated listenings. I remember when it was first released; I initially looked at the track lengths and arch song titles with enormous skepticism, but was immediately won over and discovered that the longest tracks were actually among the best. As much as I love "Vincent" and "Cosmic Hero," though, my favorite track might be "(Joe Gets Kicked Out of School for Using) Drugs With Friends (But Says This Isn't a Problem)" - funniest title of the year, and lyrics that manage to be both uproarious ("Last Friday I took acid and mushrooms/I did not transcend/I felt like a walking piece of shit/In a stupid-looking jacket") and insightful ("So there I was, just another shitbag civilian/Afraid of the cops when I was outside, afraid of my friends when I was inside").

Not to be pedantic, but "I Need You" ranked at #27.

And I vastly prefer the live version of "True Love Waits" to the studio version, but still like the studio version a good deal. And don't talk shit about "Videotape"! :P

In the early internet days, Pitchfork and other webzines used to make the world a bit more aware of artists like Kraftwerk, Serge Gainsbourg and The Knife.

But now only US/UK artists matter. Is "foreign" music dead? I certainly don't think so. For example we have an R&B scene in Sweden that is alive and well (of which Seinabo Sey is also alive in our current unacclaimed poll).

I'm waiting for more "rest of the world" lists to even things out, if only just a little.

"Cranes in the Sky" has been my SOTY from the first time I've heard it. Raphael Saadiq has done some magical thing with Solange on that album.

P4k picked the correct Maxwell track ("1990X") but not the correct Sampha one ("Timmy's Prayer" is superior to "Blood On Me"). I still think "Work" by Rihanna is piss though, and it's unfortunate they didn't include her Dusty-Springfield-tribute "Higher".

^Correct me if I'm wrong, but except for The Knife's Silent Shout, Solange is the only other artist who has managed to score #1 spot for album even though it's scored less than 9.0+?

Very surprising yet pleasant #1, to be honest. I assume it would easily crack the Top 10 for sure, but I didn't expect it to beat out all the others.

Well, Kanye may not be AOTY, but it's still their hip-hop AOTY apparently. Even there I'd have to disagree, Chance or the Tribe deserve the spot more (I'm probably not a general case, but I even enjoyed Kendrick's album more than The Life of Pablo).

Whatever, most of my favourites are in the top 20 so I guess I can't complain to much. Except for the lack of stuff from non-English speaking countries, of course, but as Henrik said, Pitchfork has lost their touch for that.

Great to see Solange at #1, truly the most important album of the year. Where Lemonade insisted on proclaiming its own greatness (not unjustifiably so, but too demonstratively for my taste), Solange just let her theme and dignified treatment thereof speak for itself, while simultaneously delivering the years most consistently great arrangements, drawing subtly from every part of her musical herritage while still creating very much her own statement. A statement indeed.

Once again, as Henrik said, Pitchfork in their early days were instrumental in bringing some of the greatest music works from beyond the English language barrier to their blossoming audience. Well at least the college favourites, like Kraftwerk and some krautrock, Serge Gainsbourg, Brigitte Fontaine, the Knife... At the time, foreign music lovers like me and others who were aware of this got hope that it was only the beginning of a globalisation of the critical approach to music. We've come a long way since then, and apparently the gears were sadly stuck in backward motion.

Most of those acts you mention are ones from decades past (and it's not like Kraftwerk were unknown prior to the late 90s!), is there really that much history of them championing contemporary acts from outside of the English-speaking world and sticking them in end of year lists? Especially once you take Scandinavia out of the equation.

I don't think that has changed much, their 70s songs list released this summer has songs from France (Cerrone, Gainsbourg), Brazil (Tom Zé, Jorge Ben, Milton Nascimento, Caetano Veloso), Jamaica (Lee Perry, Bob Marley, the Congos, Jimmy Cliff, Althea and Donna), Germany (Faust, Neu!, Kraftwerk, Can), Italy (Giorgio Moroder), Belgium (Plastic Bertrand), Nigeria (Fela Kuti) and Saturn (Sun Ra). And that's just counting the main entries.
They have always been much better at promoting foreign music when it comes to older decades than current years.
Most non UK/US/Canada/Australia albums they have put high on their lists were either electronic music, where language doesn't matter much, or swedish pop (which isn't exactly a new trend), and even there they weren't necessarily the first (Robyn's self titled was praised much earlier by Slant and Blender for instance). Most of the few that aren't electronic per se (The Notwist, Sigur Ros, Bjork, Phoenix...) aren't exactly dark horses only Pitchfork got behind (and usually sung in English safe for Sigur Ros).
They are behind the critical acclaim of early M83, Annie or The Knife, but they were not the only one and it seems to be more of exceptions than the general rule.
The only real oddity, non English sung and that they were basically the only one to push outside of its country was Dungen's Ta Det Lugnt.

Question is, which albums from the rest of the world should have they got behind on the past few years ? Even magazines from the rest of the world had the same albums as they did on their lists, so it's not like they seem to have missed something big. (I'm not the one who will blame them for not having Christine and the Queens in their list)

I'm not sure it's totally true or totally fair. EOY lists from the rest of the world generally feature national albums each year. In recent years, in France, Christine and the Queens, La Femme, Moodoïd, Frànçois and The Atlas Mountains (interestingly another act with some following abroad), Jeanne Added, Benjamin Biolay, Orelsan and to a lesser extent Jeanne Cherhal, Yelle or Nekfeu have been critically acclaimed on our national scene (I'm not necessarily talking only about EOY lists). Are foreign critics missing something big with ignoring these acts? I don't know, but I know that personnally I like most of them.

I for one am guilty of not paying enough attention to ROW music. I suppose part of it is the media and musical influences I am most familiar with,the language barrier etc. Hopefully continued exposure on here will help to redress that. Keep educating us.

As for that Foreigner coming over here, demanding to know what love is...

Ah ah are we starting an ideology here? :D I agree with everything 100%. That reminds me that we need more women too, yeah. It may be only me, but it seems to me that there are a lot of acclaimed female artists this year. The Knowles sisters effect?

bit of a shock that solange is #1. i really expected beyonce to take it.

It's a funny pattern that I've noticed lately that when the EOY lists started pouring in, Beyoncé was systematically on top for US lists, but in the most recent US lists Solange has seemingly stolen the spot away from her. It's strange, but I'm not sure if there's anything to conclude from it.

As for Ariana Grande, I'm one of the few active members of the forum who actually gave a spin to Dangerous Woman (or so I think), and I'm afraid that aside from two or three songs, I was rather disappointed, especially since I thought that the lead releases of the title track and "Losing You" sounded interesting. Besides, on the pop diva/modern r'n'b scene, Rihanna, Frank Ocean and the Knowles sisters released killer albums the same year, and in comparison, Ariana Grande's album sounds a bit by-the-numbers. It's a good album, but not best-of-the-year material in my opinion. I believe it will nevertheless manage to be a bubbler on the website in the next update.

I think there is, actually - Solange's album is more overtly political, more generally about life as a black woman in America, and that fits the cultural mood right now more than Lemonade, which while equally brilliant is much more specifically about life as this particular woman (even "Freedom" is more of an individual-empowerment anthem - except for Kendrick's verse - than a wider cultural statement).
