And to say it at such length, on top of it - all of his albums have been an hour or more in length, with Views clocking in at 81 minutes. You know, when Drake first came on the scene he felt like a breath of fresh air - a rapper who was not only a more-than-clever lyricist but vocally talented enough to sing his own hooks rather than bring in guest stars. But it's been downhill since Take Care, because he really does seem to have only one subject: "Oh, woe is me! I have everything for which a man could strive, but have I love? Nay, nay - why does no one love Aubrey for Aubrey? Prithee, I must cry myself to sleep on my gold-plated mattress filled with money." In this context, Nothing Was the Same is one of the most hilariously ironic album titles ever.

I have to ask, though: Why do you gotta fight with him at Cheesecake? You know he loves to go there!

I loved Nothing Was The Same so..

I agree with Views. I've tried several times to get into it and it just never clicks.

The Poptimism comment is interesting and I noticed a trend in the last few years toward perceived pop acts within the EOY list. Drake is definitely the cheerleader for male R&B (remember late 90s/early 00's male R&B , I'll take 2010's over that any day - D'angelo excluded of course) and the change in sound (which can trace back to Kanye's 808 album) and I feel that critics are championing that and Drake as the primary artist. From my own perspective I don't love every Drake song but Hotline Bling, Hold On are fine single and One Dance has it's quality despite being overplayed. That shift in R&B is seen now with both Knowles sisters, KKA Twigs and The Weeknd making major waves recently.
Rihanna has been a critics darling since Umbrella so no major change there. But the likes of Bieber, Swift and Jepsen represent an interesting shift in critics perception of pop. Again they underwent a shift in sound and production which are monumentally preferable to what went before. Perhaps critics are overcompensating in their analysis when this happens and shoehorn them along the 'Canon' artists. Or maybe its their Producers and their ability to apply cutting edge sounds to their music and perhaps they are really good songs.

But taking the Billboard y/e 100 as a yardstick for pop music and comparing to the AM top 100, 2016 doesn't represent anything major that hasn't happened before. 10 songs cross over both lists (the average since 2003 is 12) and 11 of the last 14 years had more crossover with Billboard than this. Of course the lists haven't finished and Village Voice slant toward mainstream could tilt it). Even taking the top 20 y/e singles on AM, just 3 appear on Billboard Hot 100. With the exception of 2015, this represents a continuous falling trend of 1-3 songs crossing over since 2008 (it varied between 5 and 9 from 03 to 08)
2015 did have huge crossover though (16 songs). 2003 is the winner with 17 and it was a very pop year and brilliant for it!

Of course these are just stats and its a personal perspective.....but then again this is a stats based site so if the shoe fits! It may highlight that there is a concentration on say 4-5 mainstream acts and they are critics representation so more of their singles make lists despite varied quality.
BTW I really like Black Beatles! Should be championing that song more here (sorry Nick!!)

No apology needed! I actually don't really dislike "Black Beatles", I just find the appeal a bit hard to understand.

Here's how I'd rank the top 10 songs of 2016 according to the critics...

Great song tier:

Cranes in the Sky
Ultralight Beam

Very Good song tier:

Burn the Witch
Shut Up Kiss Me
You Want It Darker
Your Best American Girl

Decent/Mediocre song tier:

Formation
Black Beatles
One Dance

Bad song tier:

Work

I at least like the instrumentals of "Black Beatles". If nothing else, you can dance to it.

I do think this list though is a reflection of how shitty a year this was for music. It was only in this year that "Work" and "One Dance" could have charted so high. I hear almost nothing in those songs.

Thanks for providing this list. I'll finally finished listening to all of the 2010-2015 songs on the top 6000, so I'll now I'll start diving into this list.

It's nice to know I'm not the only one bewildered by "poptimism." (It also annoys me that music critics ignore artists over 40 unless they are inner circle canonical artists.) It's strange because film critics universally are more focused on artsy, deep works, but that doesn't seem to be the case with many music critics. Perhaps it's just the nature of music itself: it's quite easy for a handful of people to make a great album, but that's generally not possible with film. Thus, with 1000s of albums released every year, music critics are paid to review the most mainstream albums, and genres that fall outside of pop, R&B, hip hop, and mainstream rock are ignored.

It's just an opinion, but I really don't think that True Love Waits by Radiohead shold be considered a 2001 song. I know the live version was launched that year, but the 2015 version, in my view, is the truly official one. What I'm trying to say with this is that the oslo one should be considered as different from the version released last year. What do you guys think? :music-listening:

Well I'm totally agree with santacosta, cause the 2001 Version is an Acoustic and Live Versión, almost like a Demo. In all case, should be call him True Love Waits (2016 Version). It's just an opinion

I am enormously thankful for your work, Sweepstakes Ron!

I have been able to relax a bit during this Christmas/New Year and also got time to add a few all-time songs lists in as well. It really means a lot. Thanks!

92 (117) Chance the Rapper feat. Knox Fortune - All Night
93 (70) Beginner feat. Gzuz & Gentleman - Ahnma
94 (116) David Bowie - No Plan
95 (108) Sheer Mag - Can't Stop Fighting
96 (96) Wilco - If I Ever Was a Child
97 (128) Beyoncé - Daddy Lessons/Daddy Lessons (Remix) [feat. Dixie Chicks]
98 (77) Abra - Crybaby
99 (83) Calvin Harris feat. Rihanna - This Is What You Came For
100 (101) PJ Harvey - The Community of Hope

The most important difference in this list is that for lists with only one song per artist (and there are plenty of those) other songs by the same artists are "blanked", they are not counted for those particular lists. This especially helps the songs by David Bowie, Beyoncé, Frank Ocean, Radiohead and others that have several songs listed.

I have also added info from last year's eoy spreadsheet for some 2015 songs. That's why for example M.I.A.'s "Borders" is now suddenly in the top 100.

On top of that, I'm also using methods to weigh the critics' lists based on different criteria similar to the main AM site.

Thanks to all of you for all the work and the explanations.

For the French Rolling Stone list, I have looked the magazine but no list is printed, it's only on the website. Sorry.

Thanks for the work, Sweepstakes Ron and Henrik! I've only just now looked at this... :angry-banghead:

I'm so surprised that Rihanna's "Work" did that well. :o

Just going through the whole list I noticed how odd it was that Mitski only scored with Your Best American Girl. I love that song, but I also thought that Puberty 2 as a whole was really a collection of great songs that work very well on their own. But the only other song that got votes was Happy and we find that one all the way at 345. Most albums that rank well have a more wide-ranging coverage in the song department, so it is weird that everyone latched on Your Best American Girl here.
