Definitely a weak year. I just realized that out of the 691 albums I have in my rating system, only 7 are from 1976. The best albums this year are from other continents. For some reason I had Zombie down as 1977 but it's 1976 in AM. 1. Fela Kuti - Zombie 2. Jorge Ben - Africa Brasil 3. Steven Wonder...

Let me rephrase my criticism of the article then, I believe the article is written on false premises and faulty logic. The critic states that Don't Stop Believin was savaged by critics when it came out, and now it's considered a pop standard. This song happens to be a very melodramatic song. The cri...

Re: In Defense of Schlock Music:
I find this article kind of pretentious. It finds one example of a song shunned and later accepted by critics and props it up as the standard. At best this article is a valid critique that critics often unfairly judge good songs for being too similar to he bad songs coming out around the same time. ...

A lot of the big indie artists seem to have fallen into a three year cycle, and I think the reason 2007, 2010, and 2013 were the standouts is because that's where The National and Arcade Fire (As well as the man the rest of you like better than I do) fall in the cycle. For me the only really important thing to me is that the music engages me emotionally. Other than that there is no 'Litmus test'. If a song focuses on melody, the melody is important. If it focuses on rythym, rythym is the most important. If it focuses on guitar riffs, guitar riffs are more important.
