Taylor Swift's 1989 is definitely the best recent example. The apex of a pop giant with a very mainstream sound, multiple #1 singles, and massive sales. The mega-success of both albums also proved difficult for both artists to duplicate.

A lot of those are quite surprising! I'd throw in 4 as another surprise in addition to the ones you mentioned, plus Lazarus vs. Pyramids being such a blowout.

Though no one is probably surprised to see it do well, This is Happening was a stealth outperformer. It only finished 8 in the EOY poll and 14 in the 2010-2014 poll. I didn't realize it had three #1's.

After Titanic Rising's surprise victory in the 2019 EOY poll, NFR sure got its revenge here. Same with Melodrama crushing every 2017 album, but that wasn't a huge surprise to me after the songs poll.
