"Jubilee Street" for Nick Cave? Really? .
Critics, let me ask you "have you ever heard of the Higs Boson Blues?"

Re: EOY Albums Spreadsheet: Update thread
It's kind of ironic. Last time The National lost to Arcade Fire when I thought High Violet was clearly a better album than The Suburbs . This year, the National put out what's (in my opinion) their weakest album since 2004, and The Arcade Fire put out their strongest since 2004...and The National i...

The name of this thread actually sounds like something he'd name an album ironically. Zappa was a brilliant musician, a creative mind, and a sharp satirist. He's missed.

Re: EOY Albums Spreadsheet: Update thread
Hypothetical question...if the lists stopped today, what kind of artist ranking bumps could we see next update? Some of my predictions: Kanye and Arcade Fire seem to be guaranteed a spot in the top 50 next update, with Kanye possibly heading for the top 40 with Yeezus's current performance. Given Da...

I will always be ashamed of American critics for their treatment of Nick Cave. Push the Sky Away is far from his best album, but it still should have made a list by now.

Great update...love the way you weighed the '10s releases Henrik, keeping the young decade from overwhelming the list, while still giving it decent weight. Every update, I start to think top 1,000 has become more of the standard of "classic albums" than top 500. The idea of the top 500 was...

I'd rather Henrik not extend it. A larger list means less updates, and the #4000 or #5000 album of all time is pretty statistically insignificant.

Re: Most Overated Albums of All Time
I guess the main reason that I don't consider Funeral overrated is that I can't think of another album released in the past 20 years that has been universally acclaimed like it has. That's the argument I'm trying to make- If a small minority is saying that an album is overrated it probably isn't. I...

Re: Most Overated Albums of All Time
*shrug* It wouldn't be overrated if most people agreed with me. That's what makes an album overrated usually, everyone loving it, and someone else thinking it's not quite all that and a bag of skittles. You can probably make an "overrated" argument for almost every album in the top 100, wi...

Re: Most Overated Albums of All Time
I come across as a raging hypocrite saying this, as it's my #3 of the 00s, but I think the idea of Funeral is the most overrated album of all-time. While it has a handful of great songs, and several very good ones, the idea of it outrank Joy Division's Closer, David Bowie's Low, and several other al...

And in some way it's much overdue. The mythos surrounding 'Loveless' has grown to such an extent over the last two decades that we tend to ignore that it was 'Isn't Anything' that was the groundbreaking album that set out the original conventions. Its successor really just built on them by fleshing...

Interestingly, critical consensus seems to be swinging in favor of Isn't Anything. Not over Loveless, but Pitchfork's recent 10 score for Isn't Anything shows that it's definitely gained traction as a classic in it's own right.

Everyone's rushing to compare this to Loveless, which is of course the gold standard, but how would you guys rank this against Isn't Anything? Do you consider it worthy of MBV's (admittedly limited in quantity, yet high quality) discography?

Kingoftonga's incredibly negative quotes are making me giggle. In past years it's almost always been fans pumping up their favorite albums with hyperbole, and here he is taking a bunch of classics (which most of these albums are considered) down a peg.

I love 1999. It's in many ways the first year of the 00s, as I feel albums like Summerteeth, The Soft Bulletin, and Agaetis Byrjun feel much more at home next to Kid A and Funeral than the do next to Nevermind and Definitely Maybe. It's easily the most relevant/ least dated year of the 90s (not sayi...
