Re: EOY 2015 Albums Spreadsheet Update

Loving the new Algiers album too. It's comfortably snug in on my top ten for the year. Here's hoping that they'll improve on that with a top five with their next album. Without doubt, there's a lot of records out there this year with stronger songwriting, but the sound of this album is the freshest...

Re: EOY 2015 Albums Spreadsheet Update

Utterly baffled that Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress only has one mention in the spreadsheet so far, thought it would be top 20 or 30 of the year... I'm not. The impression I get from many fans is that while it's by no means a bad record, it's their least liked record from GY!BE yet. Agree with M...

Re: EOY 2015 Songs Spreadsheet Update

Song lists are naturally so much more variable than consensus album lists - which I feel generally come close to getting everything ranked in the general ball park relative to the other works released this year...but gotta say not hearing the year in singles anything like the consensus song list so ...

Re: Pitchfork's 200 Best Songs of the 1980s

List needed more Bruce and R.E.M., but there are alot of things I've never heard before. Alot of the R&B, but I'm guessing I'll know more by sound than by artist if I could ever listen to the list in full. I wish this was in a spotify playlist instead of apple music. Yes, but they're probably t...

Exactly.
Truer words were never spoken...the impact is doubled when you see the band live, where the coda does go on near forever.

I'm amazed at the number of tracks I thought were sure top 100 contenders that are going largely unnoticed this year...critics seemed to have really circled the wagons around a chosen few this year, more so than normal... Sorry, this is a long list of songs but is any one else baffled why some of th...

Re: EOY 2014 Albums - Spreadsheet Updates

The biggest surprise for me so far is the almost-complete lack of mentions for tUnE-yArDs' Nikki Nack . Considering how beloved the last album was (#1 on Pazz & Jop for 2011, among other things), and how well received this one was upon release, I would certainly have expected it to show up on m...

Re: Pitchfork Best Albums and Songs 2010-2014

To each his own, Newsom's is one of the few records that got better as they aged from this list. I would never expect it inside the top 20, since it seemed american critics were giving her the cold shoulder back in 2010. Time is showing its power, though; four years in and this record is still yeld...

Re: Pitchfork Best Albums and Songs 2010-2014 (ongoing)

I only noticed "The Next Day"'s omission as the biggest one for me in my first look-through, but I missed Janelle Monáe's absence. That's unfair, her two albums were fantastic listens for me. Middle-aged suburbanites across America love Janelle, hence, she can no longer be given serious c...

Surprised - I never care much for Pitchfork's EOY song lists, but I usually am in some form of agreement their with album assessments - but can't make heads or tails out of this list other than it's been a very weak decade so far, and pitchfork continues to get twee-er and more AM pop/anti-classic r...

I actually feel that way about this decade in general. Dark Fantasy, Channel Orange, and The Seer are the only albums I've heard this decade that really rocked me to my core. Re: EOY Albums Spreadsheet: Update thread

Most of my favorite acts, The Beatles, David Bowie, Radiohead, Wilco, are ones constantly changed their sound and challenged the listener. I feel like Arcade Fire has gotten way too much credit for spinning their wheels. Neon Bible was a shameless retread of Funeral, but with more bombast and less ...

Funny enough, I also am very fond of the written word. I'm a very avid reader and an aspiring writer. Re: EOY Albums Spreadsheet: Update thread

It's kind of ironic. Last time The National lost to Arcade Fire when I thought High Violet was clearly a better album than The Suburbs . This year, the National put out what's (in my opinion) their weakest album since 2004, and The Arcade Fire put out their strongest since 2004...and The National i...

I don't think I was ever expecting Kanye to be number 1 this year. I'm expecting Nepenthe that Julianna Barwick to have the same fate that Anais Mitchell's Hadestown had a few years ago. Showers of praise forms critics but lacking appearance in EOY lists due to it's obscurity and niche market. I'm not sure about this - remember, most of the big American indie sour...

it's always amusing to see the ranking difference between the US and the Uk, which proves that music is really a subjective thing, mixed with a bit of national pride. Sorry Smiths fans, most egregious flaw in this list is 3 Smiths songs in top 200 - No f---ing way...all three above The Velvet Underground's Heroin, double No F---ing way. How Soon Is Now is the only song in the Smith's Canon that belongs anywhere near the top 200. Be My Baby is way to high. Persona...

I'm always much more torn by Song of the Year versus Album Of The Year arguments...It's so much easier to differentiate the truly special albums than between great songs...that said, few of my Favorites this year will probably make the year end lists. It's the classic Kinks curse on these type of polls. They printed their individual ballots, and it's clear they only asked contributors for their top ten albums. While this method has little impact on what tops the aggregate list, it can have a big impact on which albums end up populating those 50-2...
