Re: Ideal Point Distribution for Lists of Different Lengths

I'm for complicated methodologies if they lead to more accurate results. I will trust the statistician. :) FWIW, here's how I would design methodologies. For initial critic score aggregation: I would bootstrap the distribution of each publication to a bell curve. So instead of averaging raw ratings,...

Pere Ubu - New Picnic Time My exposure to Pere Ubu has been very scattered. I love their first two albums and besides that all I’ve heard is Worlds In Collision which is a weird new-wavey album from the 90s, and their recent Carnival of Souls. New Picnic Time is their third album, it’s kind of inter...

Leftfield - Leftism* I listened to this album way back when I was just discovering AM. I don’t know why it didn’t resonate with me then. Trippy electronica with smooth echoey resonance. Tricky - Pre-Millennium Tension I’m a big fan of Maxinquaye but this is just lackluster. The trip hop melodies are...

My favorite new discovery so far is Mr Elevator and the Brain Hotel. I actually had this on my list earlier in the year but back when I tried to listen to it, it wasn't on Spotify yet. There's something cool and 60s psych-rock about it.

Best Moderately Acclaimed Album of 2017 - Voting

Nominations are in, there are 20 nominations this year. Rules are simple, you have all of January to listen to as many of these albums as possible, and rank all the ones you heard from best to worst. The competition uses a win-loss algorithm so not ranking an album will count neither for nor against...

Re: The Best Albums & Songs of the 2000s

I dunno, if we were ranking among every album people heard I'd agree that it should be more like a bell curve. These final rounds are pre-selected to be albums a lot of people like, so I think for most people the distribution is very skewed and the meaty part of the bell curve falls more in people's...

I would advocate for win/loss formula similar to AM site personally but those are more complicated and less traceable.

I think difference should decrease as you go down because I think polarizing albums belong higher on the rankings than albums everyone agrees are 'pretty good'.
