Titus Adronicus - A Productive Cough is a weird album. It’s very different and stylistically all over the place. It includes a version of Like A Rolling Stone where lyrics are changed to be in the first person. Good album. Maybe year’s worst album title. I didn’t listen to it until it was nominated ...

Listening to Kelly Moran - Ultraviolet. It’s absolutely beautiful. Haunting atmospheric piano music. Also I decided on the format for the 2010-2019 tournament I’m planning for 2020. Most of the 1950s music I like is jazz, classical, blues or Elvis. To me the rock and r&b from that era is hard to get into because of my unrelated biases against music that sounds packaged for radio. I don’t quite have the words to describe what bothers me about it, maybe “Emotionally fabricate...

Yeah, let's keep it moving. I think for most people the difference between the worst 10 and the best 10 is bigger than the differences in the rest of the list. People put their floor for '10' somewhere and then you lose all the distinction between the rest, even though the difference is huge. But to...

Fair enough, I see quality of songs as more like a gaussian distribution. Where the best 10 songs are a measure better than the next 50, which are a measure better than the next 200, which are a measure better than the next 1000, etc. Even if rating on a standard 0-10 scale I'd give most of them 10s...

I think there's some psychology involved. People establish their favorites when they are discovering music and then it's difficult for newer albums to penetrate their personal canon. There's also some other factors, "Popular and great" motivates critics to include a record more so than &qu...

I put Quadrophenia way above Tommy both musically and conceptually. Pinball Wizard is the only song on Tommy that works out of context, whereas most of Quadrophenia works as singles. Also Tommy comes off as a religious awakening metaphor scared to be religious.

I think it’s problematic to define a genre as a relic preserved in a jar and then exclude anything that pushes it or plays on the fringes. If there's some sort of way I can use AI to help process updates. I don't have the time to offer a lot of manual labor processing lists, but I might be able to come up with some NLP solution to determine different references to the same song.
