Re: What are your EOD “Hot Takes”?

The Colin Stetson album I nominated for BMAA will be very high on mine.

Plus five or six other jazz albums from names like Ambrose Akinmusire or Jenny Scheinman.

I won’t have that much hip hop on mine but TPAB is a #1 contender. Maybe only seriously competing with High Violet and Eye Contact.

The official rule is outside the top 50, years unofficial rule is “Use your judgement” when it comes to things officially eligible but may be against the spirit of the game.

BMAA2019 - Early reveal thread

Best Moderately Acclaimed Album of 2019 will open nominations officially on Dec 1st. But I thought I’d start a thread for people who want to reveal their nominations early. No rush, just this will give them a better chance to make my year end list. :) Mine will with 90% certainty be Saint Abdullah -...

DMB is a bizarre choice when so many great alternative bands get passed over. He has a handful of good singles. But basically he’s the poster boy for 90s vanilla rock. I don’t like the idea of making it so not having heard an album is the same as not liking it. That’s drastically expanding the advantage of having more exposure.

We should at least have a way to keep it so any album you did not listen to gets your median score.

I think part of it is that, other than marquee hip hop acts, there isn’t a genre now that enough critics agree on to build a real consensus. The wave of catchy indie from the 00s like The National and LCD Soundsystem are still producing good albums but we aren’t getting many new bands in that area. ...

Another LDR album I guess I don’t get. It’s totally lacking in energy, the beats are lifeless and simplistic and the vocal performance never emotionally connects with the sometimes cringe inducingly cliched lyrics. Like all the downside of mainstream pop without the fun singability.

It’s not a restriction of the person’s taste, any more than it is to stop them from putting Kendrick Lamar on a “Best 70s artists” list.
