Re: Albums and Songs of 1984 Poll

Ha, ha - as a huge Siskel & Ebert fan, I remember that well (though I'm surprised anyone else does!). That was indeed a moment representative of what made the show so great. First American Top 40 and now this? I'm beginning to suspect we grew up in the same era, Live in Phoenix! :P Maybe, I was...

Re: Most Recommended TV Series Project Update

This is the first list that I ever saw TV Guide put together. Hopefully it can be of some use; or it can at least make for some interesting reading. Including ads, the original article was spread out over 92 pages. This wasn't even on the Internet, so I'm just going to post everything, though I'm go...

I was surprised that I was able to find this. Oh, the wonders of the Internet. No matter how we slice it, an international TV poll covering different eras and countries would be a mess, but it would be an interesting mess. Perhaps a series of decade polls would be best. Like, anyone who doesn't live in America or the U.K., name a native TV show that you can't imagine not watching, and I probably can't even watch it, not that it makes me happy. For some reason foreign TV never seems to be part of the mix of what U.S. audiences are devouring, in the way that foreign films can sometimes break out. This 2018 TV Guide list gets at the problem of compiling best-of TV lists. TV programming is in a hot phase, and any best-of list has to reckon with not just "Where does The Sopranos go?" but where does The Wire go, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Better Call Saul, Handmaid's Tale (and a lo...

For fans of Sergei Prokofiev's "Romeo and Juliet: Dance of the Knights / Montagues and Capulets" (which did so well in the AMF 1900-1949 Song Poll Results), in 1938, Prokofiev himself conducted a recording. It began the ballet's second suite, which was all that he recorded.

So, Scott Joplin never made any recordings. Notice he is not represented on the AM main page. When Joplin is credited as a performer, I assume this is in reference to sheet music or piano rolls. I actually first thought about this dynamic thanks to Ringo Starr -- I believe in the Anthology coffee table book, he says Sgt. Sometimes I think that my relative dislike of certain music years coincides with my lamer years of high school/college, like 1995 (when I turned 17, incidentally). The problem is, music years are not identical (grunge and alternative guitar rock were still at its peak in '94, then even a year later ...
