Is it eligible is a good question. It's a "discography" but just its size makes one wonder if the purpose is indeed to identify best, most important or influential albums in the genre, or if it's just not a catchall list.

I've personally never been fond of St. Anger 's production style. The choice to suppress completely the guitar solos is IMO the opposite of the essence of Metallica's music. It was a bizarre way to try to cater to the nu metal crowd. Then again, I'm not a fond of ...And Justice for All 's production...

Mostly their failure to catch up with the emergence of hip-hop and grunge I believe. Also MTV perhaps? People were watching music more than listening to or reading it by the 80s? Not sure, I wasn't there.
