Re: Album of the Week
Good point re: electronic, but this also shows how there is a blurring of the lines in some of the categories. I think genres tend to get overweight and subgenres tend to become lost in the shadows. A further complication for me are cases where subgenres are poorly defined, progressive rock for exam...

Re: Album of the Week
My listening range is fairly narrow, so it's unlikely that I would participate in this to a significant degree. That said, you should probably clarify how you would categorize world (regional) music. It might also be valuable to consider R&B outside the Pop-Rock framework, maybe Hip-Hop / Rap as...

Re: There She Goes: Questions
Thanks for the thoughtful replies. I'm glad there is support for serious discusssion. So let me flay this dead horse one more time. What would have been the consequence if the La's had changed the name of the band before the 1990 remix? To extend this a bit, what would have become of the 1988 versio...

Re: There She Goes: Questions
Not to be rude or anything, but these sorts of questions always baffle me. Bill at They Shoot Pictures for film frequently gets these sorts of questions on his site as well. Whenever somebody has a question about how this site gets its rankings, they should look at the FAQ section which Henrik kind...

Re: There She Goes: Questions
1) It's on a lot of lists. These aren't Henrik's opinion, he just records those of others. It appeared on the Rock Hall, NME, and several other lists. 2) Most likely. Unless the remix is the one acclaimed, it's almost always the original. Plus, the year is for 1988. That's a good indicator. I guess...

There She Goes: Questions
1. Can someone make a good case for why this is the number one song in 1988? 2. Is the version that is ranked in 1988 the original version released as a non-charting single, or is it possible that the critical appraisal is actually for the 1990 remix that charted (unimpressively) in both the UK and ...

Okay. You have to at least smile about this. Just after my last post I spilled a Guinness all over my office floor. It will need a carpet cleaning. Poetic justice? I'm not Bruce. I agree with some of his opinions, but like most of you think his delivery in most of his moments is poor. I have my own ...

Re: What makes a great live album?
Studio albums have impacts in their own time that can't be appreciated by those who didn't live through the time. Hearing music live can be an exhilirating experience. Hearing a bad live album can be the opposite. Good live albums usually appear when bands are totally versed with their material. To ...

Here’s the composite (albums and songs) strength of year index with scores. Lower is better. Listed from strongest to weakest. 1967 43 1968 63 1965 106 1969 112 1971 124 1977 223 1966 224 1975 291 1970 318 1972 318 1991 334 1976 358 1989 377 2007 380 1979 409 1984 425 2000 477 1973 480 1978 488 1995...

Comparing Years: Songs
Similar to Comparing Years: Albums, this is based on a low #1 song rank of 328 (1998) and a mean of 5 songs per year within 328. Formula is rank of 5th song minus total songs within 328. Listed strongest to weakest. 1967 1965 1968 1969 1964 1966 1971 2003 2007 1977 1975 and 1976 (tie) 1984 1972 1970...

Re: Comparing years: Albums
I have my favorites too. My favorites don't resemble the lists here and I suspect that's true of many members. I'm working with the data as presented here, and reaching my conclusions based on an admittedly arbitrary choice for a baseline. Still, I use the same baseline methodology each time. I have...

Re: Comparing years: Albums
I'm less interested in the lower ranking albums. Even in the years I identify with, I find most of the low ranking albums to be superfluous.
I would never run this type of analysis with even 1000 albums. I've used 800, 750, 500, and 350, but I prefer the baseline I'm using now.

Comparing years: Albums
I really enjoy manipulating numbers derived from the yearly rankings. Each time there is an update, I start crunching away, playing around. One of the things I do each time is to create an album-based strength number for each year beginning with 1963. This time the formula for that is based on the r...

Is there a model that has been subject to peer review that demonstrated how to minimize bias in this endeavor? If not, I do not yet und...

Re: IT HAS HAPPENED: Update 2014 Thread
This statistical model produces these results; as Henrik explains in the preface the lists are not definitive and never can be. Some time ago, Bruce objected to the inherent legitimacy of music industry critics (or criticism / critique) and suggested that the opinions of studied individuals might b...

For the 7 year segments I use, there has been a remarkable change that raises concern for me about the methodology. Looking at proportionate share for each segment in the the top 3000 albums, I see the following ordinal ranks 2013 2014 70-76 70-76 77-83 91-97 91-97 77-83 63-69 98-04 84-90 84-90 98-0...

Sonny and Cher - The Beat Goes On (1967) This is 1966. Tommy Roe - Dizzy (1969) This is 1968. I can't find any evidence for these changes either. The Beat Goes On entered the Billboard charts on Week Ending January 14, 1967 at #72 (the week began on January 8) and never bubbled under. Very likely 1...

Another project is the last thing I need, but yesterday I stumbled into another pit. I've decided to make a playlist for the Groundhog Day experience I could self-engineer. It isn't really a fancy, Henry, especially a late fancy. I felt lucky for these artists after I was sure the classic rock canon wouldn't be expanded once the '70s giants exhausted themeselves. I've corrected my original post as I realized I had a mistaken sense of time line for a 4th band. The 4th b...

Books that may interest some of you
A few years ago I found a copy of a book that rectifies errant procedural details in the year-end top 100 lists published by Billboard. The book is called Rock 100 and was written by Jim Quirin and Barry Cohen. The authors provide a sound explanation of their purpose and methodology over several pag...
